Even we can't believe we made it to 150 shows. It doesn't even feel like it's been that long, but alas. What a wild journey it's been, and it's still not over yet, and to commemorate this milestone... well, the newsroom was slower than usual over the past few weeks. This week we review Hiroya Oku's "Inuyashiki Last Hero". Going back 5 years to 2017, Studio Mappa did a fantastic job at adapting this overall "question of morality" series. We begin to follow the story of Inuyashiki, who is going through a rough patch in life, and his journey to becoming a "Hero" after he's suspiciously transformed into a robot after being hit by a magical bright light. We also follow the story of Hiro's transformation as well, what he decides to do with his newfound power, and what it is exactly that makes him feel "human". Tune in and see how we felt about some of the most controversial moments and the series overall. Also, remember that One Piece is crazy good and you should definitely be reading and watching!

Inuyashiki (いぬやしき) is a Japanese science fiction manga series written and illustrated by Hiroya Oku. It was serialized in Kodansha's seinen manga magazine Evening from January 2014 to July 2017, with its chapters compiled in ten tankōbon volumes. An anime television series adaptation produced by MAPPA aired on Fuji TV's late night programming block Noitamina from October to December 2017. A live-action film adaptation premiered in Japan in April 2018. Inuyashiki Ichiro is an older, friendless man with an uncaring family. One fateful evening in a nearly empty public park, he is struck by an explosion of extraterrestrial origin, and his body is replaced by an incredibly powerful, but still outwardly human, mechanical body. He quickly realizes the extent of his body's powers, and after saving a homeless man being beaten by a pack of teenagers, he decides to dedicate himself to doing good, using his powers to heal those with incurable diseases and fight crime. However, a teenager who was with him at the time of the explosion, Shishigami Hiro, had the same fate as Ichiro, but unlike Inuyashiki, Shishigami becomes a psychopath who goes about using his newfound abilities to murder various people, from classmates that annoy him to innocent families, including young children, just for amusement. His acts of merciless cruelty bring him the attention of the police, who can do nothing to stop him. Hiro becomes the most wanted criminal in the country. Inuyashiki by Hiroya Oku is a ten-volume manga series that we confidently recommend to anyone who enjoys a dark but also different take on superhero fiction. It's also an inspiring story about an average old man who wants to do some good. Briskly paced and full of the cinematic, "widescreen" traits we Westerners typically associate with influential superhero titles like The Authority, Inuyashiki is a Japanese take on a very American genre that's not a spin on the sentai stories that populate Japanese pop culture. Tune in to find out why we devoured this series in such a short period of time!
This incredibly intense show contains some very hard to watch scenes that everyone should be warned of before watching! However, if you have seen this show already, boy are you probably going to want to talk about it! On the one hand, this show has everything you could want for sci-fi fans, including aliens and cyborgs and the classic battle of good vs evil. On the flip side, it has the very real and terrifying elements of psychopathy, terminal illness and loneliness. jaw dropping scenes, confusing plot lines and an overall dark tone leave our hosts lost for words at times. See what they thought of Inuyashiki and if it can overcome these hurdles to find a permanent place in the Aniverse!

Thanks to the generous contributions of patron David Whittington, we're heading back to anime country with a show that's off the beaten path. Inuyashiki Last Hero spins a superhero tale in modern Japan, but casts the roles of the hero and the villain in a completely unexpected way by making the protagonist a kindly old man and the antagonist a sullen teen. It's a surprisingly dark and surprisingly touching take on the idea of super powers, and after listening to our analysis you'll be inspired to cruise through Inuyashiki Last Hero on Amazon Prime Video! We also talk some more about fall 2019 anime and kinksy is (regrettably) given time to share his least favorite anime of 2019. *This episode brought to you by Ertegun. Hey, do you like murder? This week we watch Inuyashiki, a show about a robot grandpa and his friend, a dog. Miraculously, Josh actually likes this one, which may point to some deep physiological issues once you know the plot of the anime. It’s Trump’s America, we’re just living in it. This is the bravest podcast ever recorded, so prepare yourself and hit me on the ground.
On this episode Nick, Kenji, and Ben attempt to talk about Studio trigger without getting hot and bothered. We dip our toes into Ben's wealth of Gundam modeling knowledge and even establish where we are at on double-sided swords. For the August manga episode, Shea and Derek go topless...at least that's a common condition that they sense in the two titles that they discuss this month. They begin with Hiroya Oku's Inuyashiki, the fourth English-language volume of which was released in June by Kodansha Comics. It's the story of an older Sad Sack of a salaryman, Ichiro Inuyashiki, whose slowly crumbling life is turned around after contact with an alien life form. As a result of this encounter, his body is replaced with a weapon-grade robotic shell, and over the course the first four volumes, Inuyashiki learns to use his new condition to positively change the lives of others. However, complications arise when another man similarly changed by the same alien encounter decides to use his powers for more nihilist purposes. Shea and Derek spend much time discussing Oku's art -- a clean yet static style -- the borderline melodrama of the storytelling, and the fact that Inuyashiki goes around without a shirt much of the time. After that, the guys turn to their second title of the month, Kenji Tsuruta's Wandering Island (Dark Horse Manga). This is a quest narrative centered on the discovery of a mythical island in the Pacific that is free floating. The protagonist of this series, Mikura Amelia, owns a small delivery service and pilots a bi-floatplane along the Izu Islands. When she discovers the writings of her dead grandfather about the elusive Electric Island, Mikura sets off with her cat Endeavor to prove its existence. The guys appreciate the protagonist as a fully formed, complex adventuring character, but they disagree slightly about the ways in which Tsuruta represents her. Shea feels that the frequently bikinied Mikura is too often posed specifically for the male gaze, and while Derek agrees with his cohost, to a point, he's not entirely convinced that Mikura is sexualized for that purpose. Regardless, Wandering Island rests upon a fascinating premise that will have both of the guys coming back to the title for volume two...whenever that publication might be.
