Welcome to Five Minutes to Think. I'm your host Katrina Bourke. The Five Minutes to Think Leadership Soundbites are aimed especially at empowering School leaders to thrive. I know that as a busy school leader, you crave time to do the deep thinking, and to work on your own leadership, but the reality is, the day-to-day demands of your role so often fill up all of your day. I'm passionate about empowering leaders to show up as the very best version of themselves and to inspire others to do the same. I want our education systems to be filled with leaders who are courageous, curious, reflective, humble humans. Five Minutes to Think episodes are small, bite-sized packages that I hope feed your curiosity and inspire you to keep doing the work of being the best human and leader you can be.

As authentic, courageous leaders, when shit gets real and a courageous conversation presents itself, we don't run away or avoid (even though our brain is screaming at us to do just that!) Instead, we dig deep into our toolkit so that we are ready to reset ourselves when any unhelpful, human behaviours arise. In this episode I'll share 3 great questions that you can add to your toolkit to help you when preparing for a crucial conversation.
When it comes to courageous conversations, the wise Brene Brown says that when we avoid stating the truth - when we are vague or ambiguous under the guise of being kind - it is often because we are trying to lessen the discomfort for ourselves, not for the other person. In this weeks episode, I want to highlight a couple of ways that you can work on you first and prepare yourself to clearly and confidently hold the conversations you prefer to avoid.
There is so much beyond your control, so zooming in and focusing on what you can control can bring some stability, peace and hope. In this episode I'll lead you through an exercise to help you find stability and a way forward when faced with difficult and overwhelming situations (like say, a pandemic!)
