“Give justice to the weak and the fatherless; uphold the rights of the afflicted and the destitute. Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.” - Psalm 82:3–4As followers of Christ, we're called to advocate for the vulnerable and protect the oppressed. One of the most urgent needs today is among girls and young women in Lebanon. May-Lee Melki joins us with a powerful story of hope and a way you can make a difference. May-Lee Melki is a Lebanese-American advocate, legal scholar, and ministry leader dedicated to advancing justice and holistic transformation in the Middle East. She serves as the Strategic Engagement Manager at Heart for Lebanon, an underwriter of Faith and Finance. The Crisis Behind the HeadlinesIn a society shaped by shame-and-honor dynamics, without a biblical understanding of human dignity, refugee girls—especially Bedouin and Kurdish—are often seen as burdens or liabilities. Add to that multiple wars, a collapsed economy, and weak legal protections, and the danger becomes tragically clear: girls are exploited because they're seen as expendable. But Heart for Lebanon is stepping in not just to rescue—but to prevent. That may sound counterintuitive until you hear stories like Ferial's—a grandmother who joined a literacy class to model a different future for her granddaughters. After coming to know Christ through Heart for Lebanon, she said, “I can't change what happened to my daughters, but I can change the future for my granddaughters.”Prevention means investing in the whole family unit. It means addressing spiritual, emotional, and physical needs by offering:Christian counseling in their native languageNon-formal education programs that integrate biblical valuesSafe, holistic discipleship environments for moms, dads, and childrenCommunity development rooted in the GospelOne of the most moving examples is Alima, a 10-year-old enrolled in Heart for Lebanon's Hope Education Program. Her mother, under cultural and financial pressure, began pushing Alima to abandon school and enter into marriage. But because of the truth Alima had learned through Heart for Lebanon—truth about Jesus and her God-given worth—she found the courage to push back. Her bold faith not only protected her from child marriage but, through prayer and persistence, led to her mother's salvation as well. This is the ripple effect of prevention-centered ministry.Real Change Through Holistic MinistryThe key to sustainable impact is community transformation. The goal isn't to isolate and remove girls from danger—which can sometimes cause more trauma—but to reshape families and communities from within through Gospel truth. When fathers, uncles, and guardians are discipled alongside mothers and daughters, entire cultural norms begin to shift. That's what Heart for Lebanon is doing every day—breaking cycles of violence and shame with the hope of Jesus.Heart for Lebanon is inviting the Faith & Finance family to join them in this mission. A gift of $114 helps reach and protect three at-risk girls, offering them education, protection, and the Gospel of Jesus Christ. You can give by:Texting “FAITH” to 98656Visiting FaithFi.com/LebanonOur shared goal? Folks are living longer thanks to medical breakthroughs and healthier lifestyles, and that means our overall U.S. population is skewing older. The Texas Demographic Center notes that the U.S. population aged 65 and older spiked between 2010 and 2020, the largest 10-year growth on record. That means more drivers on the road are older too, and statistics show that licensees over 70 jumped from 73 percent in 1997 to 87 percent in 2022. A year ago, Bernie Fette talked with TTI's Myunghoon Ko about the challenges and dangers facing older drivers, as well as how research like that performed at the Institute is producing more effective countermeasures to help keep these vulnerable drivers safer on our roadways. Today, we revisit that conversation.

The Best That You Can Do (Soft Skull Press, 2024) by our guest Amina Gautier, one of the most prolific and acclaimed short story writers working today. She lives in Chicago. The Best That You Can Do is a beautiful and wide-ranging collection, made up of what Gautier calls “very short fiction”—most of the 58 stories span only a few pages. This distilled form gives us lyrical explorations of Afro-Puerto Rican identity, the ups and fearful downs of romantic relationships, and political satires and counterfactuals in response to violence against Black bodies, among other concerns. In this captivating conversation, Gautier also reflects movingly on how cultural forms from classic literature to Gen-X nostalgia both ironically comment on and inspire her characters to action. Explaining the title, she tells us: “I'm always asking myself with fiction, “how do we get in our own way?” or “when we find ourselves trapped or in an inescapable space, what things can we do to try to claim agency or to try to free ourselves or try to find our way?” which evolved into the [new] collection: what is the best that we can do in any given situation?” Listen to hear more from a master storyteller responding to her time.  You can check out books by Amina Gautier through our library, or find out more on her website. Amina Gautier is the author of the story collections At-Risk (2011), Now We Will Be Happy (2014), and The Loss of All Lost Things (2016). She is the recipient of the Blackwell Prize, the Chicago Public Library Foundation's 21st Century Award, the International Latino Book Award, the Flannery O'Connor Award, and the Phillis Wheatley Award in Fiction. For her body of work, she received the prestigious PEN/MALAMUD Award for Excellence in the Short Story. In this episode, we're diving into handwriting. Even for those who do not have difficulty, handwriting in the early years is essential. When students have not yet reached automaticity or legibility in letter formation, it taxes their working memory and places a higher demand on cognitive resources. We want to look at how we can free up some of those cognitive demands. Effective handwriting practice will lead to stronger spelling, reading, and writing performance. Tune in as we discuss the role handwriting should have in our classrooms as well as the importance and some of the benefits of cursive handwriting! We'll also look at the developmental stages, offer some teaching tips, and share the most beneficial handwriting resources we've used over the years! Texas State University's Alyson Collins, an assistant professor, and Stephen Ciullo, an associate professor, both in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at Texas State University, join the Big Ideas TXST podcast to discuss their program to improve writing instruction for students with disabilities. A survey of fourth-grade general and special education teachers indicated fewer than 20% of them felt adequately prepared to teach writing to students with and at risk for disabilities. Through that, Collins and Ciullo identified a need to provide special and general educators professional development in writing to help them be more prepared to address the needs of students with disabilities. Their program, “Turning the TIDE: Building Teacher Capacity to Accelerate Text-Based Writing Performance of Students With and At Risk for Disabilities,” will provide the necessary professional development for these teachers to collaboratively deliver intensive intervention in text-based writing to students with and at risk for disabilities. Collins has nine years of teaching experience in Texas public schools and an extensive background in implementing Multi-Tiered Systems of Supports (MTSS). Her research focuses on effective intervention and assessment for students with learning disabilities, specifically in the areas of reading and writing. Ciullo's research focuses on two topics. First, he studies the extent to which classroom writing instruction provided to students with disabilities aligns with research evidence, and how observed instruction relates to students' writing performance. Second, he is interested in interventions that enhance teachers' effectiveness in the area of writing and content-area knowledge. DENNIS MOROLDAJoin Wes Tankersley on this episode of Shaping Success as he speaks to Dennis Morolda about his story of success of teaching young men how to be men.Dennis grew up playing sports in South New Jersey and asked himself what is a man and how should men act since he had a troubled relationship with his father. He went to College in South Jersey and majored in Education and Sociology.  His path to success started when he did an internship helping At Risk boys as an Assistant Group Counselor. He interacted with kids who had trouble with the law and came from single family homes with absent or non-competent fathers. His job at the time was to observe how the counselors interacted with the kids. Eventually he was hired as a van driver. He went to school at his college then pick up the kids from their homes in the bad areas, take them to where they would have their sessions, then drive them home. He found that these drives home were therapy sessions for the kids.  The kids would open up to him and tell him things they weren't telling the licensed therapists. He realized that this was his calling and became his living passion. His third day of teaching was September 11, 2001. The World Trade Center could be seen from the school. This event made him realize the kids need the following things: A need to be heard, competence, fun, relationships, a feeling of community, and safety which is the most important.  Dennis set himself up for success by realizing he loved leadership, so he got his Masters in Educational Leadership to become a principal. He taught for 4 ½ years  before becoming an assistant principal in 2005. The kids getting into trouble were 90% boys, and he knew something had to be done. No one was doing anything, so he decided to start a boys social group called Building Men. There would be 20 to 25 boys would meet an hour before school. There he did team building where the boys would talk about what is happening in their lives.  Dennis asked them what does it mean to be a man? Success meaning for these boys was to be bigger, faster, stronger, six-pack abs, beards and tattoos, and many sexual conquests. They also said it was accumulation of material things such as cars, money, and houses. Dennis pointed out that these things can be easiCheck out our sponsor The Warriors Collection for coffee, gear and more use code TANK at check out for a special Discount! https://warriorscollectionbrand.com/ Check out our sponsor Tattooed and Successful @tattoedandsuccessfulco use code TANK at check out for a special Discount! https://tattooedandsuccessful.com/Support the showFor merchandise, podcast and youtube: https://linktr.ee/wes.tankersley Join the Success Warrior Crew Facebook Group https://www.facebook.com/groups/successwarriorcrew/ This Episode of Shaping Success is brought to you by Terry Levy at Parkway Chevrolet in Tomball Texas. The Bible makes it very clear in James 1 and Matthew 25 that God wants us to care for the “Least of These” for in doing so, we literally get the chance to caring for God Himself, and those whom He holds so dear! God said in his word that He specifically wants us to care for, the Orphans; the Children who have, for any number of reason, found themselves alone without the family they were born into. The Trauma, loss, neglect, abuse, and abandonment that many of these children have had to face in addition to being orphaned, for most of us is simply too much to comprehend. Every year SkyWatch TV, Simply HIS Coffee Shop, and Defender Publishing, partner with you our viewers to help support and work along side ministries, like ForTheChildren.Org and their Royal Family Kids Camps to really make a difference in the lives of these children through the work done at Whispering Ponies Ranch, the non for profit ministry SkyWatch TV underwrites. Throughout the summer we work alongside these ministries to run 3 to 5 days camps where At Risk, and Foster Children came come, Meet Jesus, and get tangible help to work through the trauma's of their past. Using a number of tools, teachings, and the interactions with our therapy horses and other animals we have seen these Children find hope and start the healing and restoration process through the camps and follow-up mentoring offered, specifically to help restore children of abuse. Any queer person will tell you this. Kaya't dagdag kalbaryo sa mga Bessie kapag hindi ka pa tanggap ng mga magulang o ng pamilya mo. This is true whether you're gay, trans, lesbian, etc. You alone against the world ang background music forever? Yung inaasahan mong panggagalingan ng lakas mo, itinakwil ka pa na para kang may ketong. Siksik sa drama talaga ang buhay ng mga queer! Aminin! Our friend, Malen, married to a man who comes from a staunch Catholic family teeming with priests,  kikis about how she dealt with the news when her adult son confessed to her what she had suspected all along: that he was queer. Malen offers fighting words of advice and a little bit of admonition to queers out there who might be wallowing in self-doubt and pity, and searching for acceptance, love, and belongingness.  "Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne?" (Isaiah 49:15)Buma-Bible din kami pa-minsan-minsan, mga Bes! Kinakaya naman.
