What does it mean to be authentic as a leader? Are there ways of being that are authentic, or is it just an excuse for some pretty bad behaviour under the guise of 'that's just me, I say it like I see it?"Welcome to the new season of the Advanced Executive Leadership podcast. We're back to a fortnightly cadence with guests, and solo episodes. Here is access to the Chip Souba article I reference, "The Being of Leadership".https://peh-med.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/1747-5341-6-5
Summary Lego faced financial trouble in the early 2000s due to the emergence of digital distractions. The new CEO, Jorgen Vig Knutstorp, embraced authenticity and refocused on Lego's core values. He introduced Lego Ideas and formed strategic partnerships with franchises like Star Wars and Harry Potter. Authenticity is crucial in leadership because consistency builds confidence, transparency transforms teams, and integrity inspires influence. Consistency cultivates confidence by being the same person in every situation. Transparency is about being open and honest, creating a predictable environment that fosters trust. Integrity is the backbone of authenticity, doing the right thing even when no one is watching. In nonprofit leadership, authenticity stands as a pillar for effective and transformative management. This is the crux of the engaging conversation with Jacki Davidoff, a principal at Davidoff Strategy. The dialogue offers deep insights into the nuances of authentic leadership within the nonprofit sector, emphasizing continuous self-improvement and emotional intelligence. Watch on video!Jacki, based in Chicago but working nationally, begins by outlining her firm's mission: helping organizations realize their untapped potential. She emphasizes, “We believe that all organizations have more capacity and we work in the nonprofit sector because there are so many missions that matter deeply to a lot of people and communities.” This belief forms the foundation of her approach to leadership development, which she describes as a journey rather than a fixed destination. Authentic leadership, according to Jacki, involves an ongoing process of self-awareness and deliberate action. She challenges the conventional understanding of authenticity as a static trait, suggesting instead that it is about making conscious choices in the moment. She offers “Leadership development is a moment-to-moment choice, making choices in the moment. As I said before, watching yourself start to want to say something in a meeting and shut it down because what if you don't say it right.” as she emphasizes the importance of self-reflection and adaptability in leadership. The discussion, with host Julia Patrick, also highlights the necessity of emotional intelligence in navigating the complexities of nonprofit work. Jacki goes on to explain that emotions like fear, anger, and sadness, often seen as negative, can be harnessed to drive positive outcomes. She states, “We teach and train and coach people to attune to one's emotions, and we say, you know, there are five key emotions: hurt, anger, fear, joy, and sadness.” , which encourages leaders to view their emotions as valuable guides rather than obstacles. A big part of this fast-paced dialogue centers on the challenges faced by nonprofits due to leadership transitions and the evolving demographic landscape. With many seasoned leaders retiring, there's a pressing need to prepare the next generation, which keys to the importance of investing in people, advocating for creating a learning environment where emerging leaders can develop their skills. Jacki suggests that organizations need to foster cultures where feedback is honest and constructive, enabling continuous growth. Continuing, she touches on the impact of remote work on team dynamics and the importance of maintaining a strong sense of community even when working remotely. Jacki points out that creating spaces for open dialogue and shared experiences can significantly enhance team cohesion and effectiveness. Jacki's emphasis on continuous self-improvement, emotional intelligence, and the creation of supportive learning environments offers a roadmap for leaders striving to make a meaningful impact. As she aptly puts it, “It's that moment-to-moment diverting myself from old choices that don't really serve me and keep me small and are not a contribution to my organization.” This journey towards authenticity and self-awareness is essential for driving mission-focused success in the nonprofit world.Follow us on the Twitter: @Nonprofit_ShowSend us your ideas for Show Guests or Topics: HelpDesk@AmericanNonprofitAcademy.comVisit us on the web:The Nonprofit Show

When we mindfully and purposefully practice authenticity, we invite peace, gratitude, and happiness into our lives, and this impacts our performance. In this episode, Dr. Kamphoff shares 4 ways to be an authentic leader. To be successful in your career, you must be yourself. Power Phrase this Week: “The world needs me and my gifts. I will show my authentic self to the world through my leadership.” Quote of the Week: “Authenticity is the daily practice of letting go of who we think we're supposed to be and embracing who we are.” —Brené Brown, researcher and author
On this episode of Crina and Kirsten Get to Work our hosts explore executive presence for women at work. Sylvia Ann Hewlett, an economist and the CEO of Hewlett Consulting Partners, said that executive presence is the difference between merit and success. We can sometimes cringe when we hear and talk about executive presence because it can feel like a call to be someone other than who we are - the requirement to fit into a mold to be a leader. No, say our hosts!! The new executive presence is about authenticity and inclusion. Hewlett conducted surveys in 2012 and again in 2022 that tell a story of significant shifts in our view of executive presence. The New Rules of Executive Presence (hbr.org). Hewlett says, “[t]he old ideal—shaped and embodied by white male CEOs who ruled the U.S. and European corporate worlds through the beginning of this century—has long been eroding.” Executive presence is made up of gravitas (think confidence and decisiveness); communication (think clear and direct) and appearance (think authenticity). In 2012, Hewett's survey showed that having “a blue-chip” pedigree was important for gravitas, and that characteristic did not even make the list in 2022. In 2022, respect and inclusiveness were more important to executive presence than they were in 2012. Another shift was seen in the communication element of executive presence where in 2012 “forceful” was important and in 2022 “listening to learn” was important to executive presence. Even our view of executive presence as it relates to appearance has changed - while being polished is still important, authenticity has risen to one of the most important factors in the appearance component. Executive presence is learnable - and you do not have to master all of the elements. Focusing on your authentic strengths can improve your executive presence. Hewlett's work tells us two important things: 1. we can be our authentic selves and have executive presence; and 2. executive presence in the workplace is more inclusive than ever before.

For this Women of Color Rise episode, Analiza talks with Maria-Leticia Ossa Daza, Founding Partner and Chair of Latin America Practice, Willkie Farr & Gallagher Maria-Leticia Ossa Daza Born and raised in Colombia, Leticia knew from an early age that she wanted to be a lawyer. Her parents were both lawyers and supported her dreams, with Leticia getting a scholarship for college in France. After graduating, Leticia found herself in New York as a lawyer, surrounded by mostly white males and not sure how to show up. Leticia shares how she got clear on her authentic leadership brand and how that helped her get recognized and rise at her organization. Analiza and Leticia discuss how to leverage our authentic leadership brand: Step 1: Know and leverage your brand. Your brand is what makes you unique. This includes your strengths, goals, and job history. This also includes aspects of yourself outside of work such as your cultural background and activities such as volunteer work. For Leticia, her brand included being a Latina with an international background. Her brand also included dressing with color instead of the standard dark office attire, using her hands to communicate, and also dancing at the holiday party. She saw that being different could help her stand out. Step 2: Understand how to apply your brand and uniqueness to the organization's needs. Spot opportunities and share your ideas with senior leaders. For Leticia, her Latin American background gave her the unique lens to see that the organization was missing a big opportunity. She took the initiative to share her idea to start the Latin American practice with a senior leader. That leader applauded the idea, became her mentor, and helped advocate for Leticia to found the Latin American practice. Step 3: Share your brand inside and outside of your organization. Inside her organization, Leticia shared her unique perspective and cultural background. Outside of her organization, Leticia began to write more, starting with LinkedIn. Leticia's writing got noticed for its unique perspective, and she is now a columnist for La Republica on international business trends. Jeannette is joined by Paul Flaum, CEO of Bourne Leisure, to discuss his background and career in the travel, leisure, and hospitality industry. Paul shares his upbringing in a close-knit family and the valuable lessons he learned from his parents' successful business. He discusses the importance of putting the guest first and creating memorable experiences, and talks about the challenges he has faced in his career, the resilience required during difficult times, and the balance between being a leader and a family man. Additionally, he shares his personal connection to Holocaust education and the impact it has had on his purpose and values. KEY TAKEAWAYS Despite having a demanding job, Paul recognises the importance of maintaining a balance between work and family. Paul's purpose is to make a positive impact on people's lives, both personally and professionally. He strives to create successful businesses, provide opportunities for others, and contribute to his community. Paul's upbringing and his uncle's Holocaust survival story have shaped his values and perspective on life. These experiences have instilled in him a deep sense of responsibility to educate others, combat hate, and make a difference in the world. BEST MOMENTS "The most important thing I can do is set up an organization which really believes that's the most important thing." "I think a lot of time in leadership, it's the questions you ask, which have the biggest multiplier effect, rather than anything else you do on flashy presentations and that sort of stuff." "I genuinely believe I've been really, really lucky in life. And I look at the background, what I've just described my back from a really poor background East End." "I think over the years, I think I've definitely learned that the best type of leader I can be is being the best me." This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. It's never too late to be BRAVE and BOLD and unlock your inner BRILLIANCE. How do you define authenticity, as a leader? If you associate it with what feels comfortable, you may be holding yourself back. Herminia Ibarra, a professor of organizational behavior at London Business School, says that if you want to grow as a leader, you must leave your comfort zone and try new behaviors. Eventually, she says, you'll arrive at a more authentic version of yourself. “The paradox is that a lot of times in order to become more authentic, more fully yourself, but in a new capacity, you can't start that way,” says Ibarra. “You actually have to do things that don't come naturally and that sometimes make you feel like a fake or an imposter.” In this episode, you'll learn how to try out new leadership behaviors in lower stakes, less visible settings while you slowly improve your skills. You'll also learn how to balance authenticity with vulnerability when you communicate with your team. Key episode topics include: leadership, managing people, change leadership, authenticity, growth, communication, leadership presence, organizational change, new manager. On the latest episode of “Inside the Circles,” Mastercard's podcast about the future of work and the topics of now, host Latoya Bennett-Johnson sat down with Chad Wallace, who is the executive vice president and global head of Commercial Solutions. After a robust career with Goldman Sachs and Capital One, Wallace joined Mastercard a little over a year ago to lead the company's commercial and B2B businesses, including product, engineering, and sales. Three years ago, on National Coming Out Day, Wallace penned a letter to his younger self. He had written the draft ten times before he felt comfortable with it. After years, both in his youth and early career, of being reserved and keeping his cards close to his chest, Wallace was ready to raise his voice and put it all out there – the experiences he had growing up as a young gay man in rural Tennessee, the evolving relationships with his family and what it means to show up as your authentic self in your personal and professional life. Wallace reflects on his letter and all that has occurred in his life that led him to writing it. “Even in some of the toughest things through my life, there were really good things that ended up happening because of that,” says Wallace. “I think I'm a better person at the end of the day because of the things that I went through during my childhood and upbringing.”

Being an authentic leader is all about having a sense of purpose. Purpose means the reason why a person exists or why they want to do something. For authentic leaders, it is like having superpowers – a strong sense of purpose mixed with courage, resilience, and empathy. Who wouldn't want to have those leadership powers, right?
Being an authentic leader is important because it helps to build trust and credibility with team members. When leaders are genuine and transparent, it creates a sense of safety and respect within the team. Additionally, being true to oneself allow leaders to be more adaptable and effective in different situations. Authentic leaders are also better equipped to inspire and empower others to reach their full potential. Today's guest is Kenny Chapman, Founder, and CEO at The Blue Collar Success Group. “If the word authentic means being the real you, who are you?”While many of us have the noble intention of being authentic, I'm not so sure we really know what it means to be our authentic selves. There's a lot more work that we need to do if we indeed want to be more authentic. In this episode, I talk about authenticity and what it means to be an authentic leader. I provoke you to think about what I call the authenticity trap and direct you to some resources and questions that can help you start to figure out who your authentic self really is.In this episode:The trap we fall into when we use the word authenticA definition of Authentic Leadership and what it means for leadersHow our upbringing and cultural conditioning shape who we areWhat we need to do to get closer to being authenticThe importance of pausing and choosing your responsesSome questions to help you start thinking about who you authentically are as a person and as a leaderAnd more!Power Presence Academy: Practical Wisdom for Leaders is the go-to podcast for anyone who leads. And I'm more the person I've created myself to be versus a product of my upbringing and my emotional wiring.”“Authentic Leadership is not just being whoever you think you are. But it also includes a series of traits that include connecting with other people.”“If we are looking for more authentic connection, then we've got to do some deeper work on ourselves to become more grounded and to become more secure in who we are, what we stand for, and how we interact and connect with others.”“In my view, the challenge for us in 2023 is not “how do I be more authentic?”.
