Welcome back to the second season of The Medieval Irish History Podcast! We are very excited to be back with you all! Today, in our very first episode of the new season, we are back with Dr Elizabeth Boyle to talk little bit about Early Irish Literature. You have probably heard about some key figures of medieval Irish literature, such as Cú Chulainn and Queen Medb from Táin Bó Cúailnge, but how can we as historians (or interested readers) interpret these sagas? Are they myths that provide a window into Ireland's past or are they the result of a cleric's fertile imagination? Suggested reading: – For translations of a selection of Irish saga narratives see Jeffrey Gantz, Early Irish Myths and Sagas (Penguin, 1981) but please disregard the outdated introduction. – Ann Dooley, Playing the Hero: Reading the Irish Saga Táin Bó Cúailnge (Toronto, 2006) – Elizabeth Boyle, Fierce Appetites (Dublin and London, 2022) – Elizabeth Boyle, 'Early Medieval Perspectives on Pre-Christian Traditions in the Celtic World' In: Prognostication in the Medieval World: A Handbook (Berlin, 2020). – Gregory Toner, ‘Wise Women and Wanton Warriors in Early Irish Literature' in Proceedings of the Harvard Celtic Colloquium, xxx (2010), pp 259–27 – Angela Bourke et al (eds), The Field Day Anthology of Irish Writing Volume IV: Irish Women's Writings and Traditions (Cork 2002) – Thomas Owen Clancy, ‘Women poets in early medieval Ireland', in C. As promised, T.J. is back and we are talking / teaching about Celts, Druids, and anything else that may be related to ancient cultures. Here are the resources that T.J. Gave me for Celtic research: https://sites.google.com/site/theancientcelts/about-the-author The Ancient Celts by Cunliffe : A pretty standard and well-recognized text that swans the swatch of Celtic history, culture and society.    War, Women and Druids by Phillip Freeman  : Focuses on contemporary eyewitness accounts of the elements mentioned in the title.    The Druids by Ellis    : Focuses more on druidic religion, philosophy and practices.   Caesar Against the Celts  : Focuses on the Gallic Wars and battle with the Romans    Atlas of the Celtic World   :Focuses on geography.   About T.J. Altieri   As an author, TJ Altieri has dedicated himself to challenging paradigms and eliciting deep social commentary in a thoroughly engaging way for the reader. By fusing genres and counterbalancing perspectives, he compels the reader to engage in questions about society and one's own self. Aside from his most recent crime and political thriller "Controlling Interest", Altieri has written three as of yet unpublished novels in the genres of drama, high fantasy and science fiction. He considers the factor that drives and unites all of his stories to be the empathy and humanity we feel through his characters and how they make us reflect on our own decisions. Outside of fiction, TJ Altieri has completed historical treatises in archaeology, anthropology, and gender studies. When not writing, he works as a history educator in Connecticut Public Schools and as conservationist working to preserve wildlife, in and out of human care, at Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo

This month's special episode concerning inner, personal experiences in Celtic Spirituality is an interview with my aunt, Dr. Patricia Shea. She is Professor Emeritus of Education, and holds an MA in Religious Studies. Currently, she is a life coach, faciliator, and spiritual director. Patricia was also a Catholic nun in the Order of the School Sisters of Notre Dame for many years. At this stage of her life, however, she considers herself a Celtic Crone. What Patricia will be sharing in this interview is an integration of what she has learned from others within the area of Celtic Spirituality, combined with her own personal perspectives based upon her life experiences. This is not an academic discussion, but more a space for Patricia to share her own insights about her spiritual path, including her views about religion, and mysticism as well. We discuss what Celtic Spirituality is, the Celtic Wheel and how this is attuned to the Earth, the Winter Solstice, and even some opportunities a worldwide pandemic can offer to help us all explore deeper questions about life. It’s clear, we’re in the middle of a global crisis. With the ongoing coronavirus pandemic spreading worldwide, self-isolation and the disruption of daily routines are leading to stress and anxiety.  In this show you’ll learn about: Why self-care should be front and center of your life right now How to take care of yourself physically, emotionally, mentally, cognitively, and socially In today’s show, you will get practical information on how you can take care of yourself amidst the coronavirus epidemic. News feeds are filled with negative reports and dismal stories about the selfishness and greed exhibited by people. The current situation is both overwhelming and disheartening, especially to a lot of people who feel powerless at this time. But you can cut through this cycle of fear and worry. You may find yourself facing unfamiliar circumstances, but you have the chance to grow into this new world. You start by taking care of yourself. Listen To The Podcast Now. About Our Guests Emma and Carla Papas are known as The Merrymaker Sisters. Their work involves finding love, integrity, and compassion during the journey to health and well-being. After quitting their desk jobs, Emma and Carla went on a journey of self-discovery to find magic and follow the bliss.  They’re the founders of MerryBody Online Studio, which provides unlimited access to yoga, pilates, and meditation classes. Their website also gives free healthy recipes that nourish your body.   The Merrymaker Way of Life The Sisters’ Journey To Self-Care Emma and Carla talk about their self-loathing, self-hate, and unhealthy relationship with food. Making the decision to follow their bliss. They took a break and got training for yoga and pilates. They started their MerryBody studio and changed their mindset to feeling good and letting go. Acknowledging The Negative Feelings You have the right to feel the way you feel. Remember that you are not alone in this. Moving physically allows Emma and Carla to move through their emotions. Movement allows them to let go of the responsibility of carrying the world on their shoulders. Moving Through This Bad Time The easiest thing to do is to constantly come back to the breath and breathe deeper. Falling into the anxiety and stress will allow you to find your anchor. Utilize the power of mediation. Dancing like a crazy person and going wild will help you from being stuck in your head.  Breathing Exercises For Listeners The first step is a kind of grounding or sinking into your bodies for one minute. The grounding exercise involves using three breathing techniques. There’s usually resistance when starting out, so it’s best to pick one breathing technique and focus on that. It’s important to check in with yourself and always come back to your practice.  You can get so caught up in the news nowadays that you can forget to do what makes you feel okay. The experience of deep breathing fires neural signals up in your brain and triggers calmness. The disruption to your daily routines makes you more vulnerable to stress. Breathing exercises can help you reclaim some sense of power. The language in your head can be a pathway to doing self-care first aid to yourself. Doing Self-Care Remember to always fill your cup, so you can give better to the people around. Practice yoga or pilates at home and eat nourishing food to take care of yourself.  Avoid dehydration by having a big bottle of water at your desk. Create a sense of safety by staying connected with family and friends through voice messages or video calls. Get creative and do the things you’ve always wanted to do but never had the time. Create bumpers around the information you digest to avoid exhaustion. The Beginning Of A New Opportunity There is an opportunity to create something good for the community and practice altruism. Emma and Carla opened up MerryBody for free to get everyone moving while at home. Thumbelina's life is already difficult. She lives in early modern Denmark and is no bigger than her mom's thumb. Oh, and also, everyone wants to marry her. And by everyone, I mean everyone. Frog moms want her to marry their sons and, somehow, the story gets stranger from there. In true Hans Christian Andersen fashion, this fairy tale for children about a girl being born from a flower and trying to find love contains kidnapping, death threats, crushing nihilism, and sleazy moles. Childhood was different back in the 1800s. The creature are shrimp fries! But you have to act now or they'll be gone...oh, wait...no. My bad. They died 200 years ago. --- Sponsor: The Great Courses Plus. I'm currently loving The Celtic World. Check it out...or check out ALL the courses for free for thirty days. Taliesin predicted the frightful monster known as the Fad Felen which comes from the marsh with hair, teeth and eyes like gold and brings death in its wake. Sikes also talks about the frightful female spectres, banshees and black maidens familiar across the Celtic World as harbingers of death. As Facebook gets darker and darker with political posts filled with hateful comments, I find myself at a crossroad. How can I make a difference, bringing fun and happiness back into the lives of people who are hurting. It struck me that this is what I envisioned for my band, Kilted Kings. We call our style Heroic, Celtic World music. The goal is to lift up the downtrodden and make you feel like royalty. I feel like our new CD has done that. It's called Name On My Soul. It features 10 tracks of inspiring music that make you want to sing and dance. But there's also a message underneath that I just now realized was staring me in the face in the song "Slainte Mhaith". Buy Name On My Soul CD  "Slainte Mhaith" is a gaelic phrase meaning "here's to your good health." But it's the lyrics that I feel are so essential to Facebook: "Many times in my life, I forgot the kindness code I reaped the sorry seeds that I sowed But when I gave instead of took That's when my spirit growed My charity turned into liquid gold" We are all caught up in our biases so much that we forget that we are friends and family. We all deserve joy and happiness in our lives. Instead, we share fear and hatred...for our friends... and our family. I don't discount anyone who is upset by current events. I am too. It makes me depressed thinking about it. But I want more fun and happiness. For that reason, I plan to continue my Daily Facebook Fun at 10 am every weekday. I hope you will continue to watch and share. Bring a small amount of happiness to your friends. I also want to ask you for another favor. Share the "Slainte Mhaith" music video. But not just share it. If you agree with what I said above. Share that as well. You want to see more joy and fun on Facebook. So share the kindness code. Share some Celtic Kharma and lets hope it comes back tenfold to all of us! --- You can subscribe to The Celtfather podcast at www.celtfather.com and find my mailing list as well.  If you want to help me to keep making music, please join the Gunn Runners Club on Patreon.
