Homo Sapiens precariously set themselves atop the great chain of being right below their God. In doing so humanity boldly claimed dominion over all creation. Wildfires, a global climate crisis, the pandemic, and a growing list of endangered species plague our planet. Is this the tipping point? Has humanity finally been pushed from the pedestal, or will we mercilessly try to climb back to the top? Today, Pastor Tony Minear, Ph.D. continues his sermon series “Evolution and Humanity” and explores our relationship with nature. Don't be an ostrich. When your beliefs are under attack, what are you most likely to do? For most people, the easiest way to avoid or ignore the attack is to be like the ostrich and bury our head in the sand. It's an effective posture to take to guard our beliefs. Evolution tells us we are wired to seek protection from attacks, especially those against our beliefs. But why? Beliefs are not only useful to navigate through life, but they are also emotionally connected to our very physical being. Take the idea of death and the soul. The majority of us, especially Christians, believe in life after death. However, science and religion do not agree on the existence of the soul. Today, Pastor Tony Minear, Ph.D. invites you to shake off the sand and explore a new idea—an idea that may make you a little uncomfortable and possibly question your beliefs about the soul. Listen and discover five suggestions for melding the science and religion about the soul. It's the elephant in the room that Christians don't want to talk about. What is the American dream? The founding fathers of our nation imagined a nation built upon the principles of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. But would they recognize today's version of the American dream? Likewise, thousands of spiritual communities and churches like ours were once imagined and founded on a common vision. But will that vision continue to survive and thrive in a culture of declining spiritualism and irrelevancy of the church itself? The model for church is rapidly evolving, but has today's church lost its ability to dream new dreams? Join us this week as Pastor Tony Minear, Ph.D. shares his vision for Church of the Beatitudes. Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy posits that only human beings are moral agents, and therefore only human beings can perform evil actions. Join us this week as Pastor Tony Minear, Ph.D. continues his sermon series, "Evolving..." and explores the tension many feel between the notion of intelligent design and Darwin's theory of evolution. Economic disparity in the United States has increased by 20% in the last 30-40 years. However, this distinction between the “haves” and the “have nots” is not something new. In fact, unequal distribution of income and opportunity between different groups in society has been around for centuries and was just as prevalent in Jesus’ time as it is today. So much so that Jesus told a parable about it as related in Luke 16: 19-31: The Rich Man and Lazarus. Join Pastor Tony today as he explores Jesus' parable of a reversal of fates. When Lazarus, a poor beggar, dies alongside a rich man, who inherits the better fate? Will Lazarus heed the rich man's request and rescue him from eternal torment? Our tendency is to take the easy way out and moralize the parable making it about good versus evil. But what if we were to just sit with the parable and look at it purely objectively? What does this parable say about our life choices today? In a culture of instant gratification and avarice, discover the uncomfortable and hard truths that are revealed when we just sit with Jesus’ parable and ponder the ways in which we can make a difference today and live a life well. Transformation of body, mind and spirit can happen on many levels. Take minimalism. Many believe that you can have a better quality of life if you minimalize your possessions and downsize. Jesus admonished this same notion in Mark 10:17-27, when he asked a wealthy man to give up all his possessions, give to the poor and follow him. But was Jesus speaking literally to this individual man or was he addressing something greater? Join Pastor Tony Minear as he continues his worship series, "Choose: God or Money," and explores a new way of interpreting Jesus’ request. This is especially true when it comes to the restoration of Hope as presented each year during the season of Advent. While the culture wars and populist movements are beginning to gain momentum, where do you stand? Join us this week for our continued worship series, Moral Foundations, as ellie Hutchison, our Member In Discernment, examines the fourth of six moral foundations, Authority/Subversion.     What does “authority” mean for you? In the political sphere, it describes any of the moral principles legitimizing differences between individuals' rights and duties by virtue of their relationship with the state. In a familial sphere, it describes our lived experience with individuals who influence how we self-identify such as our parents and teachers. But how do we collectively decide the virtues of leadership and followership? And how do we not undermine legitimate authority or respect for our traditions as a society? The answer may be to simply change or reimagine our relationship with power. Jesus understood this. From geographical, ideological, and spiritual groups to your political affiliation, your identity is largely defined by being a part of a group. Social and evolutionary science tells us that group cohesion and longevity is based largely on a group’s ability to bond through in-group biases. While loyalty to the group and its biases can create solidarity, it can quickly turn toxic if another group (adversarial) is introduced. Jesus understood this. But instead of letting in-group biases create rivalry, he expanded his group to include adversaries, minorities, and the marginalized. How about you? Founding member, Roger Waters, describes the narrative as showing us “the self-isolating barrier we build over the course of our lives, and the "bricks in the wall" are the people and events that turn us inward and away from others.” We can connect with the message of The Wall because of its emotive power to remind us of what it feels to be powerless and at the mercy of others, be it governmental, societal or familial. Is it possible to make love real for another person, even when that person is deceased? For centuries, cultures have venerated the dead, especially one’s familial ancestors, out of a deep love and respect for the deceased. For many, this veneration stems from a core belief that the dead have a continued existence and may possess the ability to influence the fortune of the living. According to the record in Genesis, when Sarah, the wife of Christianity’s patriarch, Abraham, died, she was buried in Hebron. But why does the Bible include this story and what does it say about Christianity’s belief system for us today? Gathering 144: “The Altar of War”

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 17, 2020 29:00

Most Christians can agree that perhaps one of the most difficult Old Testament stories to understand, justify and share with the next generation is that of Abraham being asked by God to bind his son, Isaac, on an altar of sacrifice. There are many interpretations of the story, as well as parallels offered to Jesus’ own passion story. But what if there were a different way to interpret it? What if we saw it more as a parable than a story? Perhaps even a parable meant to illustrate a moral or spiritual lesson about the altar of war? Join Pastor Tony Minear, Ph.D. as he examines the story of Abraham and Isaac and what it says about human sacrifice and war in a modern world. Listen and decide where your own comfort lies when it comes to sacrifice and the altar not only of war, but of your own conviction.    Recorded live at Beatitudes Church in Phoenix, AZ on 8/14/20 Preaching: Rev. Tony Minear, Ph.D. Scripture Reader: Janelle Tapphorn Scripture References: Genesis 22:2-13   If you like what you hear, consider donating at: https://www.beatitudeschurch.org/online-giving
