Throughout Scripture, God always redirects his people to live according to His perfect will. His primary method was through specific individuals attuned to hear God's voice. These were the Prophets. In this series, Pastor Matt will take us through some unique stories of the Prophets' lives and how their actions and words continue to influence us today. In this episode, we will hear from one of our staff pastors, Tony Shackleford, who will teach from this series.

This week Granger interviews Tony Wood about the doctrines of grace, human depravity, and God’s sovereignty in salvation. Tony emphasizes that salvation is entirely the work of God—humans are spiritually dead and unable to seek Him without divine intervention. He explains how this challenges modern views of autonomy, particularly in American culture, and often stirs discomfort around the idea of God’s control over all things, including evil and salvation. Despite the tension between God’s sovereignty and human responsibility, Tony affirms that Scripture teaches both. He shares his personal journey from thinking he chose God to realizing that God had chosen him, seeing this truth consistently throughout the biblical narrative—from creation to Christ to the birth of the Church. This theological shift profoundly changed Tony’s preaching. Instead of crafting messages around felt needs or cultural trends, he now practices expositional preaching—teaching the Bible verse by verse and letting Scripture shape the message. Granger and Tony agree that true church health begins in the pulpit, where God’s Word—not style, music, or production—must remain central. They encourage believers to seek churches that faithfully and deeply preach the Bible.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Pastor Tony's message, “Who Is This Man?”, centered on the identity, purpose, and power of Jesus Christ. Drawing from Matthew 1:21, he reminded us that Jesus came with a clear mission—to save His people from their sins. Through the joyful cries of the crowd in John 12 and the prophetic words of Isaiah 9, we see Jesus not only as a King but as our Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, and Prince of Peace. Pastor Tony emphasized three key themes: Mission, Mercy, and Miracles, showing that Jesus fulfilled His divine purpose with compassion and power. Ultimately, in John 19, Jesus declared “It is finished,” completing His mission of redemption and sealing our hope through His sacrifice.

In this message, Pastor Tony examines the biblical story of Moses' descent from Mount Sinai to find the Israelites worshipping a golden calf. The sermon explores themes of impatience, poor leadership exemplified by Aaron, and the people's quick return to old ways. Ultimately, the narrative is presented as a foreshadowing of Jesus Christ, the ultimate mediator who offers true atonement for human sin, unlike Moses. This week, Pastor Tony reminds the saints at SomaChurch that the sooner we learn to love God's grace, the sooner we will stop trying to earn it.
Pastor Tony's message yesterday focused on the life of Joseph, illustrating how God's purpose unfolds through trials and triumphs. Using Genesis 37, he highlighted Joseph's dreams and the jealousy they sparked in his brothers, leading to betrayal and hardship. The six stages of a dream—I thought it, I caught it, I bought it, I sought it, I got it, I taught it—mapped Joseph's journey from the pit to the palace, emphasizing perseverance and faith. Despite being sold into slavery, wrongfully imprisoned, and forgotten, Joseph remained steadfast, trusting God's plan. In Genesis 41, we see God's favor elevate Joseph to a position of power, fulfilling the very dreams that once brought him trouble. Pastor Tony reminded us that, like Joseph, we may face pits and prisons in life, but God is always working behind the scenes, turning what was meant for evil into good, as seen in Genesis 50:20.
