Women are more often asked to do extra things at work than men. Things that do not translate into promotable actions, and we keep on saying yes to them. Listen as I chat with Kelli Thompson all about the invisible workload of women at work and how it contributes to burnout.  Kelli has spent more than 15 years in leadership, coaching, and training and has translated those skills into an amazing ability to help women find clarity and confidence in their careers. Once her home life calmed down, she started wanting to actually be home. So she had to start rebuilding and reinforcing her boundaries.  That was when she set out on a path to find her core values and implement them in a way that saw her life and career elevated.  Listen as she shares her story, how she finally made shifts to leave her burned out lifestyle, and why she's passionate about helping women everywhere to do the same. Your career does not have to be draining. Find your joy and you'll find the space you're meant to occupy both personally and professionally! Kelli is truly a badass and you won't want to miss this conversation.  “Because if I was overworking, then I wouldn't have to face just how horrible of a situation I was in, in my marriage, and that was an ‘aha' for me.” Kelli Thompson   In this episode: [01:55] Welcome Kelli Thompson to share her background and story.  [03:13] Kelli shares a story highlighting the invisible workload of women at work.  [07:39] What did her burnout look like from the outside?  [09:51] Did she have one particular moment where she realized her extra work wasn't paying off?  [12:27] What helped her realize she was drowning in her own invisible workload?  [14:54] How can you take steps toward evaluating your invisible workload?  [20:48] “You will disappoint some people, and that's okay.”  [22:42] There's no reason for you to have to give an immediate answer to requests.  [24:36] Connect with Kelli.    Links and Resources  Connect with Kelli: Kelli's Website LinkedIn | Instagram 3 WAYS TO GET INCREDIBLE HELP AT A LOW-COST!!! On the inside, however, it was a different story. Listen in to hear her burnout tale and what it took for her to get out of the deep dark pit.  Catherine was killing it in her career. She was on every committee, took on every extra responsibility, and was rising through the ranks of her practice. But she was burning the candle at both ends and never felt like she could take a breath.  Soon it was apparent that there was something truly wrong. She had no energy and she couldn't focus. She went to the doctor, and after months of testing, it was determined that she had Hashimoto's disease.  She took great care to change her lifestyle and finally asked for the help that she needed. Now she's still practicing but with the support she needs. She also started the Happy Lawyer Podcast to have conversations and share her wisdom and advice with other female lawyers.  The number of female attorneys who leave the profession rather than ask for the help they need is staggering. She's hoping to combat that by giving them the tools to ask for the support that will help them keep going. “Slowly and surely I was burning the candle at both ends and I couldn't really stay above water anymore.” Catherine Shearer   In this episode: [01:53] Welcome to the show, Catherine! Your most immediate need is to recover enough so that you can make the next best step! Which is why I'm leaving you this season with some tangible takeaways that you can use to create space in your life. If you find yourself in that deep dark hole of burnout, then listen in!   First things first, you need to know that the word “No” is a complete sentence. If you cannot take on one more shift or one more project, then tell your boss no. Not in a cranky toddler kind of way, but in a real and self-preserving way.    In fact, once you've said no, give them an acceptable alternative. Listen in to hear a few examples, but don't just say no and walk away. Give them other options for their request, they'll appreciate it and you will be establishing new boundaries.    Another seriously important part of this is learning how to express your needs at work. Then asking more questions to clarify the situation. If you can't express your needs and ask the right questions to dig deeper into uncomfortable situations, then it's time to do some work.    Burnout often stems from having blown out all of your boundaries. It's time to re-establish them. If your attempts at communication aren't well received, then it may be time to start firing off your warning shots.    Listen in to hear all the goodness and then shoot me an email. What would you like to see in the next season of Burntout to Badass?    “Most of us are traditionally employed, highly intelligent, highly motivated, and we're highly compensated, but we are hitting the wall.” Dr. Errin Weismann In this episode: [01:07] Welcome to the last show of season 1! When your body starts mimicking the symptoms of a stroke, you know that there is something seriously wrong. Dr. Valerie Rein was working and moving and constantly on the go when one day her body just stopped. She shares her burnout story and why she feels that for women burnout goes beyond individual experience.    It wasn't until she was laying in the hospital and still working since she could get more done away from her phone that she knew something was wrong. First, that she was still working despite having a potentially life threatening condition. Second, that she was there at all.   Her experience led her on a path toward mind-body trauma healing that has truly transformed her life and others. She has been a leader on exposing the existence of intergenerational transmission of trauma, specifically when related to women.    For millennia women have been oppressed. Oppression is a traumatic experience. Women across the world carry this trauma around as it has been passed down in our DNA.   This conversation was fascinating but what's even more fascinating is that there is evidence-based, scientific data available to back up the existence of Patriarchal Stress Disorder in women. Listen in to learn more and definitely grab a copy of Dr. Valerie's book!    “A Woman has always been punished for power or reaching for her authentic desires.” Dr. Valerie Rein In this episode: [01:41] Welcome to the show, Valerie! [13:02] “It doesn't matter how successful I am, if I don't feel safe, my body is going to keep reacting to this.” [17:16] Dr. Valerie reflects on the feather moments she had. She started working a more high-stress job but didn't stop doing any of the other activities, Shang was now simply doing them in a new city.    She knew that there was something going on with her, but she grew up in a family and culture that looked upon therapy and mental health very unfavorably. We all experience burnout differently, something you'll learn as you listen to these episodes, so it's important for me to share my experience with you! Listen in as I dig deep into what I was thinking, feeling, and doing when I was in the deep pit of burnout.  I first experienced burnout within the first few weeks of my attending job. Here I was with the big beautiful new job, the husband and two babies at home and a mountain of student debt. I was supposed to be on the mountain high but I felt lower than I ever had in my life. Exhaustion was the root of my life. There was no amount of sleep or rest that made me feel energetic and I just felt terrible. I was snapping at my husband. I was angry all the time and if I wasn't angry, I was completely numb. Externally my life looked amazing. I appeared to have it all. But the cost of having it all was really taking its toll. Once I finally found myself in the basement of burnout I found my first coach and she helped me realize where the burnout truly stemmed from. I wanted to help people. I wanted to heal people. But there are so many different ways to do that.  Now, six years later and I'm doing exactly what I love and am meant to do. Keep listening in to hear the amazing stories of women just like you who have faced the pits of burnout and risen out of the ashes refreshed, rejuvenated, and revitalized!    “I'm a woman who speaks openly about being burned out as a family medicine physician so that no other working professional woman feels alone in her workplace journey.” Dr. Errin Weisman In this episode: [02:12] Welcome to the first episode of Burned Out to Bad Ass! [02:40] I experienced physician burnout within the first couple of weeks of my new attending job. [04:16] Burnout to me felt like numbness, crushing, and being trapped. [05:48] Externally my life looked awesome. [07:43] I hit the valley of burnout and then found the basement. [10:29] In the spring of 2015 I found a coach that understood and heard me. [12:12] I was put on this earth to heal and help. Being a physician isn't the only way to accomplish that. [14:11] I started getting coaches training and started making changes. [15:30] Six years later, I am doing what I am excited about. [17:25] Know in your heart that you are not alone, you are not crazy and you are not wrong. Change is absolutely possible. [18:05] I want you to take an internal evaluation of your life and say, is this enough? Am I satisfied with what I am doing?
