For mens både anmeldere og dedikerede Brontë-fans trækker filmen gennem mudderet, er der også mange, som overgiver sig til filmens svulstighed - og ikke mindst Jacob Elordi-faktoren. Den originale roman blev udgivet i 1847 af Emily Brontë, som døde året efter dens udgivelse. Hun efterlod sig ingen interviews, ingen litterære saloner og ingen PR-strategi. På den måde er hun litteraturhistoriens ultimative anti-brand. Helt omvendt forholder det sig med Emerald Fennell, instruktøren bag den biografaktuelle udgave af ‘Wuthering Heights’. Kot je dandanes že v navadi, smo prvi vpogled v najnovejšo priredbo klasičnega romana Viharni vrh dobili skoraj leto pred premiero s pomočjo neuradnih fotografij s snemanja. Te so ponujale precej transgresivno vizijo viktorijanske ljubezenske zgodbe, ki prek tragičnega odnosa med Catherine Earnshaw in Heathcliffom, temnopoltim varovancem njenega očeta, tematizira vprašanja medgeneracijske travme ter rasnih in razrednih trenj v angleški družbi 18. stoletja. Tudi pred prvimi podobami Margot Robbie kot Catherine in Jacoba Elordija kot Heathcliffa pa nas večina verjetno ni pričakovala tradicionalne priredbe. Fennell se je v svojem dosedanjem delu namreč precej zavestno in z veseljem predala vlogi provokatorke. Vseeno so prej omenjene fotografije prizorov s kostumi v slogu osemdesetih let prejšnjega stoletja, svetlolaso Robbie v vlogi temnolase Catherine in izrazito erotičnimi trenutki razburili marsikaterega oboževalca izvirnika. Še večja tarča pomislekov pa sta bila glavna igralca. Kljub pogostim diskrepancam v starosti igralcev in njihovih likov, je petintridesetletna Robbie precej vprašljiva kandidatka za vlogo Cathy, ki v romanu umre pri svojih osemnajstih. Še bolj problematičen pa je seveda izbris Heathcliffove rase. Prav sedaj, ko je javni diskurz tako osredotočen na probleme reprezentacije, razmerij moči in prevpraševanje zgodovine, bi lahko Fennell v svoji priredbi povedala kaj zares pomembnega. A se je odločila, da ne bo. Kot režiserka tudi sama prizna, je omenjeni konteksti pri pisanju scenarija niso zanimali. Fennell je želela prej kot samo knjižno predlogo na veliki zaslon prenesti svoj najstniški vtis romana. Za ta namen si je pred ponovnim prebiranjem knjige tudi izpisala vse, česar se je spominjala od preteklih branj. Med temi zapiski so se tako znašle reči, ki so se režiserki skozi leta vtisnile v spomin, pa tudi tisto, kar je v procesu pozabljanja in fantaziranja sama dodala. Sodeč po filmu in njenih besedah, je pri adaptiranju bolj zvesto sledila tem vtisom kot Brontëjinemu romanu. Njeno priredbo bi lahko zato ustrezneje karakterizirali kot fanovsko literaturo v filmski različici. Kot številne priredbe romana prej Fennell v svoji v ospredje postavi del zgodbe, ki se osredotoča na odnos med Catherine in Heathcliffom – izpusti torej knjižno sedanjost, v kateri Brontë izriše usodo naslednje generacije na Viharnem vrhu. Fennell vsebinsko niti v najširšem smislu ni zvesta sporočilu ali resnici romana, temveč raje sledi svoji čustveni resnici. Heathcliffov lik je tako odrešen praktično vseh svojih okrutnih lastnosti ter s tem zravnan v idealiziranega romantičnega junaka. Mnogo drugih likov je iz zgodbe izbrisanih ali združenih v en lik, pa tudi njihove motivacije in dejanja so drugačni. Vse te spremembe služijo izbrisu kompleksnejših družbenih vidikov romana ter osredotočenju na trenutke zgodbe, ki lahko samo v takšnem vakuumu zares delujejo kot epska romantična tragedija. Tako se najnovejši Viharni vrh popolnoma preda erotičnim podtonom romana in estetiki kiča iz osemdesetih. Fluorescenčno oranžno-rožnato nebo in razkošna kostumografija bi lahko bili vzeti naravnost s platnic cenenih zgodovinskih ljubezenskih romanov – ti so nenazadnje navdihnili tudi plakat filma. Mogočna scenografija prehaja med meglenimi travnatimi griči in izumetničenimi notranjščinami, ki obenem spominjajo na Drakulo Francisa Forda Coppole in Rocky Horror Picture Show režiserja Jima Sharmana. Namesto zgodovinsko ali literarno ustrezne priredbe nam Fennell s tem ponudi čutno, impresionistično, stilizirano izkušnjo. Če uspemo ob ogledu tudi sami popolnoma zanemariti izvirni roman, lahko s potopitvijo v to izkušnjo film doživimo kot učinkovit, koherenten in estetsko presunljiv izdelek. James Cameron-Wilson says that #1 Wuthering Heights, written and directed by Saltburn's Emerald Fennell, is not a close adaptation of the novel and has attracted criticism for casting Jacob Elordi alongside Margot Robbie. However, it is thoroughly entertaining, has a great score and production design and is also quite funny. He found it a cinematic delight and feels Fennell is a national treasure. #3 Crime 101 with Chris Hemsworth and a great cast is a rare LA movie actually filmed there. James enjoyed it. Not only is it a good crime thriller, but the characters are very human. On Blu-Ray for the first time is the Oscar-nominated 1974 East German film Jacob the Liar. A darkly comic movie set in a Jewish ghetto in 1944, it is in similar vein to the much later Life Is Beautiful. The disc comes with lots of great extras. Learn more about your ad choices. On Sunday afternoon—just hours before the Super Bowl and Bad Bunny's electrifying performance— Vogue's book club members gathered at the SVA Theatre in Chelsea for a special preview of Wuthering Heights. The screening was followed by an insightful conversation for The Run-Through between director Emerald Fennell and Chloe, in which they compared Emily Brontë's gothic novel with Fennell's film adaptation.Drawing on literary scholarship and her own childhood memories of the book, Fennell explained why she chose to lean into its sadomasochistic undercurrents. “There's a quote from Daphne du Maurier in which she describes Wuthering Heights as a kind of sexless book. But I've never experienced it that way. That's part of the novel's magic—everyone who reads it takes away something slightly different. For me, the sexual power dynamics are extremely explicit.”Fennell's version makes several notable departures from the classic text. Isabella Linton emerges as a more dynamic character (Fennell joked that she's “more of an Isabella than a Cathy”), and the adaptation omits both Nelly's first-person narration and the novel's second half (William Wyler did it first!). Perhaps the most memorable addition, however, is the inclusion of crushed eggs beneath bed sheets – an “inside joke” between lovers Heathcliff and Cathy. Rebecca Leber-Gottberg talks to us about the history of the bookstore, her role there, and books that folks in Boise have been buying, but she also explains the bookstore's Read Freely Project, which is their effort to get banned and threatened books dispersed throughout the community.    And in our book rec section, we're jumping into spooky season with books related to ghosts, but if you don't like horror, don't worry: a lot of these “ghostly” books aren't horror, and some of them may only seem to be about ghosts. In this episode I go on a style journey with the inimitable and side-splittingly funny, iconic British Jeweller, Theo Fennell. I have been lucky enough to have known Theo for decades ...our first shops were close on the Fulham Road in Chelsea.
