Anthony Fennell, an Irish journalist and playwright, is assigned to cover the underwater cables that carry the world's information. The sum of human existence—words, images, transactions, memes, voices, viruses—travels through the tiny fiber-optic tubes. But sometimes the tubes break, at an unfathomable depth. Fennell's journey brings him to the west coast of Africa, where he uncovers a story about the raw human labor behind the dazzling veneer of the technological world. He meets a fellow Irishman, John Conway, the chief of mission on a cable repair ship. The mysterious Conway is a skilled engineer and a freediver capable of reaching extraordinary depths. He is also in love with a South African actress, Zanele, who must leave to go on her own literary adventure to London. When the ship is sent up the coast to repair a series of major underwater breaks, both men learn that the very cables they seek to fix carry the news that may cause their lives to unravel. At sea, they are forced to confront the most elemental questions of life, love, absence, belonging, and the perils of our severed connections. Can we, in our fractured world, reweave ourselves out of the thin, broken threads of our pasts? Can the ruptured things awaken us from our despair? Resoundingly simple and turbulent at the same time, Twist (Random House, 2025) is a meditation on the nature of narrative and truth from one of the great storytellers of our times. Colum McCann is the author of eight novels, three collections of stories and two works of non-fiction. “ We're very lucky that we've inherited this wonderful backdrop, but everything that we do is based around socializing and how we can use these spaces with our friends and our family. Yes, we like to party, the Irish love to party. So, that extends not just within the interiors, but into the grounds.” We're in great company with James Fennell, the proud steward of Burtown House and Gardens in County Kildare, Ireland, an 18th-century Georgian Villa that he and his family have called home - growing their food and nourishing their soil naturally for over 150 years. For decades, this has been an ever evolving project - inspired by personal travels and created for travelers to discover - a historic property turned haven for flora and fauna. Today, three generations of the Fennell family welcome guests to come and experience their bounty of creativity and wellbeing, their blend of sustainability and heritage. In this episode, James, a modern day Renaissance man, tells a tale of success out of struggle, and paints a picture of prosperity - for this place and the people who seek out to experience it. Top Takeaways [1:40] James' childhood growing up at Burtown House was a contrast of grandeur and hardship - growing up in a beautiful yet crumbling estate, living in the basement while grand rooms sat unused - all while recognizing and refining this ‘diamond in the rough', as he took the painstaking steps of preserving his family's historic home. [8:20] It was a modern-day fairy tale for James and Joanna - friends at first as they patiently waited for the stars to align - falling in love with each other and the beauty of other cultures as they traveled the world pursuing photography and interior design careers until fate called them home. [15:50] James always had a vision for Burtown, yet it is a vision that is ever-evolving to this day. Realizing early on that restoring its natural beauty and bounty was not enough, it needed to be shared. [20:00] Whether guests are coming for a taste of what is in season at the Green Barn Restaurant, to stroll through the gardens for a special gathering, to pack a picnic full of their favorite finds from Jo's Pantry, or to settle in for the night in the Stable Yard - there is a touch of rustic elegance woven throughout their experience, with big flavors and bright flowers abound. [35:30] With their three talented children coming of age and all creatives in their own rights, James and Jo are busy setting the stage for them within the family business - bringing about new projects from bespoke cask whiskey called Burtown Bonded to sustainable cabins and sculpture gardens to fruit orchards and a boutique stay at their sister property in Portugal. Patty and Brain interview Dr. Marcis Fennell from the Department of Health & Sport Sciences at the University of Louisville. Dr. Fennell's research illuminates the social and moral aspects of "trash talking" among high-performing athletes. In this fascinating conversation, we learn the roots of "trash talking" (boasts and bragging) with and for your opponent and the surprisingly prosocial ways that this behavior can stimulate connection and competition. We use our critical thinking lenses to look deeply at our own assumptions and experience with trash talking to come to a new appreciation of this concept, thanks to Dr. Fennell.

In this episode of the Epigenetics Podcast, we talked with Yadira Soto-Feliciano from MIT about her work on the Menin-MLL complex and the effect of small molecules on its stability in leukemia. We explore the pivotal moments that led her to cancer biology during her graduate studies, where her work included ground-breaking research on the role of the plant homeodomain Finger protein-6 (PHF-6) in leukemia. This work bridged the realms of chromatin accessibility, transcription factors, and cancer cell lineage, providing critical evidence for the concept of lineage plasticity in cancer biology—a topic that has gained significant traction in recent years. Dr. Soto-Feliciano discusses how advances in techniques like CRISPR and ChIP-sequencing have shaped her research, enabling deeper insights into the mechanisms underlying cancer cell identity. As our discussion transitions, Dr. Soto-Feliciano shares her experience in David Allis's lab, illustrating how the collaboration across diverse scientific disciplines enhanced her understanding of chromatin biology and generated significant insights into the mechanics of epigenetic regulation. Highlighting a recent 2023 publication, we unpack her findings related to the conserved molecular switch between MLL1 and MLL3 complexes. These discoveries revealed how the application of small-molecule inhibitors of the menin-MLL interaction can alter gene expression and affect leukemia cells' responses to treatments. We also touch on the operational dynamics within her lab at MIT, established during challenging times marked by the pandemic. We know we need to be investing trillions of dollars annually into the climate transition. Venture capital is just a small slice of the pie, but there's simply no time to slow down its contribution to advancing climate solutions. In 2023, however, climate tech venture funding dropped 30% to $32 billion. Whether this was a temporary slowdown caused by high interest rates and the macro environment, or the new normal, will make a big difference.Recently, I've been thrilled to start hearing about funds that are closing new and significantly bigger rounds. One such firm is Clean Energy Ventures. They just raised their second fund, which is three times the size of their first, and I was pleased to get to hear the details from Clean Energy Ventures' Co-Founder and Managing Partner Temple Fennel. Temple's been investing in climate tech since 2017 and has held fast to focusing on companies that can reduce emissions by multiple gigatons. In today's conversation, we hear how Temple got started in climate tech investing and what he seeks in an investment. We hear about some of his portfolio companies, the changes he's seeing in climate investing and much more. Lots to learn in this one – enjoy. In today's episode, we cover:[03:02] Temple's path & how he decided to focus on climate investing[7:54] Clean Energy Ventures' investment thesis & what makes them unique[11:38] Expectations, assumptions & surprises from the first fund[14:25] Rebound Technologies, their business potential & climate mitigation opportunity[17:40] Aqua Membranes & why Clean Energy Ventures invested[19:51] Other examples of what Clean Energy Ventures is interested in[23:03] The second fund & the focus this time around[25:52] The Simple Emission Reduction Calculator: Emissions reduction & the causality for financial return[27:33] The process of raising capital today [30:42] The current state of the capital market for climate[32:36] Change in SBTI rules around offsetting & talk on decarbonization mandates[34:49] What needs to happen to get company leadership onboard for making near-term commitments to technologies that will drive their decarbonization[36:11] How investors are acting differently & outlook[37:45] Other interesting investment areas with opportunityResources MentionedClean Energy VenturesRebound TechnologiesAqua MembranesOXCCUNoon EnergyClean Energy Ventures' Simple Emissions Reduction CalculatorS2G Report: The Missing Middle: Capital Balances in the Energy TransitionConnect with Temple FennellConnect with Temple on LinkedInConnect with Jason RissmanOn LinkedInOn
Dr. David Wurmser, Senior Analyst for Middle East Affairs at the Center for Security Policy, Served as Middle East Adviser to Dick Cheney, as Special Assistant to John Bolton, and as a research fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, Served in the U.S. Navy Reserve as an intelligence officer at the rank of Lieutenant Commander. Kyle Shideler, Director and Senior Analyst for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism Explored the betrayal of the Biden administration concerning the law enforcement professionals whose performance, capabilities, and morale may be the difference between life and death for many of us in this country. Captain James Fennell Retired from U.S. Navy in 2015, concluding a 30-year career as a naval intelligence officer specializing in Indo-Asia Pacific security affairs with an emphasis on the Chinese Navy; assignments included tours as the Assistant Chief of Staff for intelligence for the U.S. Seventh Fleet aboard the USS Blue Ridge, the Office of Naval Intelligence China Senior Intelligence Officer, etc., Former National Security Affairs Fellow at the Hoover Institute at Stanford University. We got an update from Captain James Fennell about the state of China's strategic arson under the "arsonist-in-chief," Xi Jinping, how it is part of a larger strategy for conquering the world using multiple techniques and quite possibly without having to fire a shot. We also discussed the extent to which American elites have been indispensable in enabling China to put itself in a position to do devastating harm to our country.
Welcome back to Bad Dads Film Review! Today's episode is a seasonal journey, a seaside escapade, and a culinary exploration all rolled into one. We're starting with our top 5 favourite seasons in cinema, taking a detour to the charming town of Saltburn, and wrapping up with a dive into the flavoursome world of Salt Fat Acid Heat.Top 5 Seasons in Cinema:Spring - "Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring" (2003): This beautiful film uses the cyclical nature of the seasons to tell profound stories of human life, reflecting the passage of time and the lessons learned along the way.Summer - "The Endless Summer" (1966): An iconic surf documentary that follows two surfers on a global quest to find the perfect wave, capturing the essence of summer and adventure.Autumn - "When Harry Met Sally" (1989): The autumnal scenes of New York City provide a picturesque backdrop to this classic romantic comedy, enhancing the film's themes of change and maturity.Winter - "The Revenant" (2015): Winter's harshness is palpable in this survival drama, where the icy landscapes are both breathtakingly beautiful and brutally challenging. All Seasons - "Forrest Gump" (1994): Forrest's life story moves through the seasons of his life, with the changing scenery reflecting his journey from a young boy to a seasoned adult.Buckle up, podcast listeners, for a cinematic ride that's equal parts posh and psychotic. We're diving into "Saltburn," the darkly comedic brainchild of Emerald Fennell, the filmmaker who brought us the unforgettable (and slightly terrifying) "Promising Young Woman."This time, Fennell takes us to the hallowed halls of Oxford University, where we meet Oliver Quick. Oliver's about as out of place as a rogue Crocs sandal in a Savile Row suit. But fear not, for a knight in shining bespoke armour appears – well, more like a charming aristocrat named Felix Catton.Felix, dripping in privilege and charisma, offers Oliver a summer getaway he can't refuse: an invitation to Saltburn, the sprawling estate overflowing with Felix's equally eccentric family. Imagine "The Grand Budapest Hotel" if it took a very wrong turn down Downton Abbey Lane.Oliver jumps at the chance to escape his dorm room ramen existence. But what starts out as a posh poolside dream quickly descends into a hilarious, horrifying mess. Think "Weekend at Bernie's" meets "The Talented Mr. Ripley," with a healthy dose of Evelyn Waugh thrown in for good measure.Shifting from the cinematic to the culinary, Salt Fat Acid Heat is a fascinating docuseries hosted by chef and food writer Samin Nosrat. Based on her bestselling book, the series explores these four fundamental elements of cooking to uncover how they can be used to enhance flavour and create culinary delights. Nosrat's journey takes viewers around the world, from the sea salt of Japan to the olive groves of Italy, making it a mouth watering exploration of global cuisine. We were of course really only interested in the salt contentWhether you're a film aficionado, a seaside explorer, or a culinary enthusiast, today's episode offers a rich palette of discussions. So, join us as we traverse through cinematic seasons, uncover the charm of Saltburn, and savour the fundamental tastes of Salt Fat Acid Heat.
I bite off a lot this week, in a five-way conversation with editors and contributors to the ever-so-of-the-moment anthology The Black Girl Survives in This One. That's a promise right there on the title page, but as you will find out, survival is not always the same thing as living happily ever after. Saraciea J. Fennell, Desiree S. Evans, Monica Brashears & Eden Royce talk to me about the vision (and necessity) of the project and where their stories came from? We discuss the role of urban and family legend, authentic dialogue, writing for younger readers and how horror's treatment of Black writers and characters has changed. Enjoy! For the follow-up to her acclaimed and controversial début feature film, “Promising Young Woman,” the writer and director Emerald Fennell (also well known as an actor on “The Crown”) has made a dark satire of not just aristocracy but our collective preoccupation with it. “Saltburn” follows a college student who joins a wealthy classmate at his family's mysterious old country estate, which the director shot as “a sex object.” Fennell is very familiar with this world—albeit from a distance. Her father was a jeweller who sold work to Elton John and Madonna, and Fennell went to the same boarding school as Kate Middleton. “As a female filmmaker, more than any other kind, you're expected to be a memoirist. People are more comfortable with that,” she tells The New Yorker's Michael Schulman. Her previous film, “Promising Young Woman,” about a woman's attempt to hold a rapist accountable, had an extremely dark ending that infuriated many viewers, but that Fennell found to be more honest. “I don't think of myself as a liar at all. I hope I'm very honest—but that's what a liar would say.”
