Breaking Free from the Diet Mindset: Uncovering the True Path to Self-Love and Nourishment with Errin Smith

Fall in Love with Fitness

Dieting and emotional eating often go hand in hand. Emotional eating is often a response to deep-rooted emotions such as trauma, stress, anxiety, or depression, while dieting is the most common approach used to combat emotional eating. When dealing with uncomfortable feelings, it can be difficult to sit with them. We often try to escape from them by self-medicating with food, exercise, shopping, or anything that gives us instant pleasure, which drifts us away from our fitness goals.   Fitness and health are not a simple equation of dieting, exercise, and food as we perceive. The true solution to achieving long-term health and wellness lies from within. Understanding your emotional triggers, how they shape your behavior, and working on your transformation is key to making lasting positive results. It is only when we take an honest look at ourselves and connect with our inner selves that we can truly make progress in achieving our goals. In this episode of Fall in Love with Fitness, Errin Smith shares with me her journey, how her emotional eating and dieting created havoc in her body, and how she transformed her life.  Learning how to work on our emotional triggers and build a healthy relationship with food without dieting and demonizing some food groups. Topics Covered: 0:02 Breaking Free From Diet Mindset and Self-Image Constraints 1:45 Emotional Eating and Suppressed Emotions from Childhood 3:52 The Emotional and Physical Struggles of a Fitness Influencer 13:15 Erin's Journey Through Extreme Diets and Food Relationships 21:31 The Pressure of Perfection and Worthiness in California 22:40 The Impact of Diet Choices on Gut Health and Wellbeing 31:40 Finding Inner Peace and Leaving a Toxic Environment 35:07 Transforming Health Through Real Food and Mindful Living Key Takeaways: Emotional eating is not about food: Errin emphasizes that the root of emotional eating lies in unmet emotional needs rather than dietary choices. Impact of diet culture: The conversation sheds light on how societal standards and diet trends contribute to disordered eating patterns and self-worth issues. Significance of self-acceptance: Finding peace with oneself is crucial, as Errin notes the transformation that occurs when you start "craving yourself." If you've been listening to this podcast, and you're ready to take a timeout and focus on just you for a whole week, then I want to invite you to join me for the Transformation in Paradise Empyrean Retreat in Costa Rica May 24-31, 2025.  This is going to be the most transformative week of your life at the breathtaking Osa Peninsula in Costa Rica.  This will be a small group experience with exclusive access at the Blue Osa resort..  Imagine waking to the sound of the Costa Rican rainforest musical every morning.  Start your day with a yoga practice overlooking the Pacific Ocean, joined in with howler monkeys. Daily walks on a private beach that goes on for miles. Macaws flying overhead. Spa treatment at a 5-star resort, and the best farm-to-table food - right from the Blue Osa farm.   This retreat is designed to reset your nervous system, so you stop the patterns of self-sabotage and overwhelm. Grab Your Opportunity for a Free Call With Lynne here.   About Errin Smith: Errin Smith, also known as "That Health Chick" on Instagram is an avid health and fitness fanatic who is expert trained in health optimization for over 15 years, and has worked with world leading health experts such as Dr. Zach Bush MD, Dr. Christine Schaffner, Dr. Dan Pompa, Mark Groves and a list of high level celebrity health experts. She is also the founder, producer, and host of What We Crave: The Emotional Eating Summit. After 25 years of struggling with emotional eating, food addiction, and "shame fasting", Errin became obsessed with understanding the root cause of what it is that we are REALLY craving. She is on fire for cultivating real, beautiful, honest conversations that provide roadmaps to healing and how to make peace with food and ultimately yourself.   What We Discuss In This Episode: Errin shares her upbringing with processed foods and dieting attempts, leading to emotional eating and weight gain. She hit rock bottom working excessively while numbing with keto foods, appearing "nine months pregnant." This inspired starting "What We Crave" to understand the root causes. She realized it was never about the food: The root causes behind cravings, emotional eating, food addiction, and binge eating. We have to honestly confront what we're REALLY craving. When we get triggered, most of us point the finger at someone else. Errin shares how her abusive boss triggered overworking without boundaries, and her need for soothing with food. We should prioritize nourishment over dieting by consuming grass-fed proteins, superfoods, electrolytes and ashwagandha drops cortisol and inflammation naturally. Emotional eating stems from living problems like disconnection, not dietary issues.   Resources from Errin Smith: Watch “What we crave” for free: https://www.whatwecrave.com   Connect With Errin Smith: Website: https://www.whatwecrave.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/that.health.chick TIKTOK: Whatwecravesummi t   Connect with Lynne: If you're looking for a community of like-minded women on a journey - just like you are - to improved health and wellness, overall balance, and increased confidence, check out Lynne's private community in The Energized Healthy Women's Club. [13:30] A Journey to Rewire for Freedom from Eating Patterns and Beyond -       Errin emphasizes the significance of understanding how the brain is wired, particularly in relation to eating habits. She describes a pattern where her brain was wired from a young age to associate various emotions and situations with the act of eating. This includes eating when stressed, happy, or bored. -       She mentions that the brain can be rewired over time, offering freedom from patterns like binge eating, anxiety, and stress. -       Errin suggests that the process of rewiring the brain not only applies to binge eating but can also address other behaviors such as anxiety and stress. She emphasizes the potential for absolute freedom on the other side of this rewiring process. -       Errin's insights highlight the complexity of brain rewiring, the potential for freedom from ingrained behaviors, and the individualized nature of the journey to health. [19:10] Errin's Transformative Path from Disordered Eating to Wholesome Wellness -       Errin acknowledges that overcoming her disordered eating habits was not an immediate process. Letting go of these habits, which provided joy in a stressful job, took at least a couple of years. -       Errin mentions practicing "shame fasting" and highlights how disconnection from herself and her surroundings was a significant part of her struggle. -       Her reliance on food for joy and comfort made breaking the cycle challenging, emphasizing the emotional aspect of the journey. -       Errin describes making gradual but impactful shifts in her dietary choices. She moved away from excessive fat bombs and processed foods, opting for whole foods instead. Cooking from home, reducing reliance on seed oils, and focusing on quality sleep became essential elements in her journey to better health. [29:50] Wellness through a Carnivore Approach -       Errin emphasizes the need to break free from the dogma and recognize that individual experiences and transformations may vary. -       Errin shares a significant shift in her health journey by adopting a more carnivore approach, focusing on consuming more protein from grass-fed, grass-finished beef. This change, combined with weightlifting, sleep, and other factors, became a game-changer for her well-being. -       Errin notes that practices such as incorporating more grass-fed beef into her diet and prioritizing sleep might seem too simple, but they had a profound impact on her overall well-being. -       Errin expresses a desire to share her experiences, particularly regarding the benefits of a beef-centric diet, with women struggling with binge eating disorders. She believes that the simple act of incorporating beef into meals could potentially help many women achieve positive transformations in their relationship with food. [32:45] Salty Wisdom: Unlocking the Vital Role of Salt in a Keto Journey -       Errin learned a valuable lesson about the importance of salt in her keto journey. Not taking in enough salt contributed to adrenal fatigue and heightened stress levels. -       She emphasizes the significance of incorporating sufficient salt into her routine, particularly in the morning. -       Errin reflects on her experience with Bulletproof coffee and fasting, highlighting that what works for one person may not work for another. She found that she personally needs fat and protein from beef in the morning, and this realization became a game-changer for her overall well-being. -       Incorporating a beef breakfast with sea salt and an egg had a profound impact on Errin's energy levels and overall feeling of well-being.
