What if the Christian life isn't about achieving – but receiving?    In this episode, Dr. Libin Abraham, lead pastor of Bent Tree Bible Fellowship, shares how discovering grace transformed his faith from burnout to freedom. Instead of striving to earn identity, he learned to rest in what God had already done.    Together, we explore the difference between a “rowboat” life powered by effort and a “sailboat” life moved by the Spirit. Libin also unpacks how humility opens the door to grace, how eternal hope reshapes daily living, and why care is central to discipleship.    If you've ever felt exhausted trying to be enough, this conversation invites you to experience the freedom, power, and hope found in God's grace.   Dr. Libin is also a featured speaker at our upcoming Called to Care event – see link below to learn more and sign up.   Subscribe to the podcast and tune in each week as Haley and Dustin share with you what the Bible says about real-life issues with compassion, warmth, and wit.   So you have every reason for hope, for every challenge in life. We're often told that the American style of parenting is inferior—that we're doing it all wrong compared to, say, a laissez-faire Parisian whose kids eat whatever is served. But is it our too intense/ too lax/ too snack-heavy parenting style that is making us (and our kids) so stressed? Or is it where we're doing that parenting? In this episode, we explore the forces shaping parenting in America today, and the ways in which other countries offer parents more support. From the pressure to “do it all” to the lack of community support, we examine how our American struggles may be rooted in American ideals. There's no doubt cultural expectations can shape our parenting decisions, leading to the "intensive parenting" that's so easy for others to criticize. But there's plenty about our circumstances as American parents that makes things harder. Our friend Janelle Hanchett (whose writing inspired this episode) was exactly right when she wrote: "As much as we may in the US give lip-service to universal healthcare, parental leave, labor rights, and childcare subsidies as key tenets of good parenting, just below these assertions is the implication that if American parents simply tried harder, they would not be so stressed and they would parent better. The narrative bombards American parents relentlessly: Others do it better because they are culturally superior. They are not better people. They live in societies with better policies." The manosphere isn't just a trend — it's a deliberate pipeline that targets disenfranchised young men, hooks them with a few real truths, then indoctrinates them into a system built on fear, control, and the suppression of women's sovereignty. And the scariest part? The men who know better are choosing silence. In this episode, Preston Smiles and Alexi Panos go deep on what's really driving the rise of the manosphere, why the self-development space has failed us, and what it will actually take to dismantle these systems — starting inside your own home and your own nervous system.━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Executive Coaching: How to Choose the Right Coach as a Tech Leader

Develpreneur: Become a Better Developer and Entrepreneur

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 17, 2026 25:17

For many developers and engineering leaders, executive coaching feels like something you turn to only when things go wrong. We're trained to solve problems, push through obstacles, and rely on our own expertise. So when progress slows, the default reaction is often to work harder—not to step back and reassess. That's exactly why executive coaching can be so valuable when used intentionally. At its best, coaching isn't about fixing weaknesses. It's about uncovering blind spots, challenging assumptions, and helping capable leaders see where their habits are limiting growth. When the fit is right, coaching brings clarity and momentum. When it's wrong, it simply adds noise. About Andrew Hinkelman Andrew Hinkelman is a certified executive coach and former Chief Technology Officer who works with tech founders, CTOs, and engineering leaders to strengthen their leadership and people skills. With over 25 years of corporate experience, including 8 years as a CTO, Andrew understands firsthand the pressures technical leaders face as they move from hands-on execution to leading teams and organizations. His coaching focuses on helping leaders build trust, develop others, and stay strategic as responsibilities grow. Andrew's philosophy is simple: all professional development is personal improvement. After experiencing burnout in his own leadership journey—constantly stepping in to fix problems and being needed by everyone—he learned the value of trusting his team instead of controlling outcomes. Today, Andrew helps leaders avoid that same trap by building resilient teams, focusing on relationships, and creating environments where others can succeed. Follow Andrew on Instagram and LinkedIn. What executive coaching actually does Leadership coaching is frequently misunderstood, especially in technical environments. It's not mentoring, consulting, or performance management. Rather than providing answers, a coach helps leaders examine how they think, make decisions, and show up—particularly under pressure. This kind of perspective is difficult to gain from inside your own day-to-day context. For technical leaders, this distinction matters. Many engineers advance by being exceptional problem solvers. Over time, that strength can become a constraint. Coaching helps leaders recognize when execution, control, or perfectionism starts to limit influence, trust, and scale. At its core, this work builds awareness—and awareness is what enables meaningful change. When executive coaching is the right move Coaching isn't necessary at every stage of a career. If progress feels steady and challenges are manageable, it may not add much value. However, it becomes especially useful during moments of transition or tension, such as: Stepping into a new leadership role Navigating organizational or team change Feeling stuck despite sustained effort Noticing that familiar approaches no longer work These moments often signal that your environment has changed—but your operating model hasn't. A strong coaching relationship helps leaders adapt intentionally instead of reacting out of habit. Executive coaching for leaders in new roles New leadership roles come with unspoken expectations. Success is no longer defined purely by output, and feedback becomes less direct or less frequent. Many leaders assume they need to "get everything under control" before working with a coach. In reality, coaching is most effective when things still feel unclear. That uncertainty highlights where growth is needed—whether in communication, prioritization, delegation, or decision-making at scale. You don't need to show up polished. You need to show up honestly. What a real coaching engagement looks like One common misconception is that leadership coaching is a one-time conversation or a motivational reset. In practice, effective coaching is an ongoing engagement built around clarity, feedback, and behavior change over time. It starts with defining what success actually looks like—not in abstract terms, but in concrete outcomes that matter to you and your organization. From there, the work focuses on identifying what's getting in the way. Often, these are habits that once helped you succeed but now create friction. If they were obvious, you would have addressed them already. Many engagements begin with structured feedback to ground the work in reality. This helps align self-perception with impact and reduces guesswork. It's not about judgment—it's about accuracy. How to evaluate coaching fit Coaching is a relationship, not a transaction. Talking to multiple coaches isn't optional—it's essential. A strong indicator of fit is experiencing a real working session rather than a polished sales call. Pay attention to how the coach listens, challenges assumptions, and guides reflection. Productive discomfort is often a good sign. If you leave a session seeing a situation differently or questioning a long-held belief, growth is likely. If you leave feeling simply validated, it probably isn't. Red flags that signal a poor coaching fit Coaching is not a rescue tool for poor performance. When someone is disengaged or unwilling to grow, it rarely works. Another red flag is a coach who consistently agrees with you. Comfort feels good in the moment, but it doesn't change behavior. Effective leadership development introduces intentional, constructive friction that leads to insight. Executive coaching during burnout and plateaus Burnout often comes from effort without impact. Leaders work longer hours, take on more responsibility, and still feel stuck. Coaching can help identify a keystone goal—the one focus area that makes everything else easier. It also helps leaders stop over-investing emotional energy in things outside their control, which is a common and costly source of exhaustion in senior roles. Executive Coaching Checklist Signs coaching may help you move forward Indicators that a coach will challenge rather than placate Coaching Fit Test: One Session What a meaningful trial session should reveal How to tell if the coach will stretch your thinking Stuck or Burned Out? Find the Keystone Goal How to identify the one change that unlocks momentum A reset approach for overwhelmed leaders Conclusion Executive coaching isn't about hiring someone to give advice—it's about choosing a partner who helps you see yourself and your situation more clearly. If you're navigating change, feeling stalled, or sensing that effort isn't translating into progress, this kind of support may be less about doing more and more about seeing differently. Markets shifted, costs rose, and what once worked no longer does.We unpack how rebuilding begins with getting honest about where we are today, taking stock of our skills, relationships, and lessons learned, and letting go of identities tied to past success. We talk about the importance of reassessing who we listen to, finding energy through aligned action, and rediscovering the joy of being a beginner again. We also explore the emotional side of rebuilding, including ego, expectations, and the fear of letting go of what once was. The takeaway is clear: don't be intoxicated by past success or hungover from past failure. This next chapter isn't about going backward. Hello to you listening in Victoria, Texas!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Story Prompt Friday on Whidbey and your host, Diane Wyzga.Maybe like me you're familiar with the line, “Everything old is new again.” Some attribute the saying to Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, to Jonathan Swift in the 1700s, or to Churchill, Mark Twain, or even a Chinese proverb.  Genesis aside, what does the saying mean?  In brief, old patterns, music, items, ideas, and so on come around again to inspire new forms. Like this example from Ben Tuna, the Glass Cowboy, a second-generation stained glass artist. His most recent creation involves a vintage Porsche (scorched by the fires in Los Angeles) and windows salvaged from decommissioned churches. To quote from the Glass Cowboy website: “By merging sacred architecture with the burned-out shell of an icon of speed and design, Ben explores the tension between ruin and reverence. These windows, once still in chapels and cathedrals, now move - reframed in steel, placed in motion, and carried forward by a new purpose. This body of work asks: What survives disaster. What beauty do we carry with us. And how can broken things be reborn, not as what they were—but as something entirely new.”Click HERE to learn more  Click HERE to contact Ben Tuna at Glass Vision StudioClick HERE to follow Glass Cowboy on InstagramStory Prompt: What in your life has survived disaster? What beauty still remains? How might you imagine what's broken being reborn as something entirely new?  Write that story and tell it out loud! You're always welcome: "Come for the stories - Stay for the magic!" Speaking of magic, I hope you'll subscribe, share a 5-star rating and nice review on your social media or podcast channel of choice, bring your friends and rellies, and join us! Today on Karl and Crew, we discussed the importance of separating ourselves from bad influences. As followers of Christ, it’s crucial to surround ourselves with a community of fellow Christ-followers, as being surrounded by a worldly community can significantly influence our walk with Christ. We see this affirmed in 1 Kings 12, where we see how a young king, Rehboam, took the advice of bad influencers, and it led to destruction. We then turned to the phone lines to hear stories about good and bad influences from our listeners. Then we had Dr. Geoff and Cyd Holsclaws join us to talk about the intersection of faith, neuroscience, and spiritual formation. The Holsclaws are hosts of the podcast Attaching to God and wrote the book, “Landscapes of the Soul: How the Science and Spirituality of Attachment Can Move You into Confident Faith, Courage, and Connection.” Dr. Geoff has also authored several other books and is a visiting professor of theology at Western Theological Seminary. At the same time, Dr. Cyd is a Spiritual Director and a trauma-informed, Jesus-centered, professional certified coach with the International Coaching Federation. She is also a Certified NLP Master Practitioner and Master Coach. We also had Asheritah Ciuciu join us to talk about being sensitive to the presence of God in our lives and embracing it. Asheritah is a national speaker, bestselling author, and founder of One Thing Alone Ministries, an online ministry that helps overwhelmed women find joy in Jesus. She also has a YouTube Channel where she posts guided prayers, bible tips, and other resourceful videos. #161  - Burned Out and Still Saying Yes? This Popular Therapist Explains Why You Can't Stop People-Pleasing. Interview with Kendra Nielson from Fulfillment Therapy What if your burnout isn't about doing too much—but about doing too much for everyone else? In this episode of Pretty Well, I sit down with licensed therapist and Fulfillment Therapy founder Kendra Nielson to talk about what's really driving burnout, anxiety, people-pleasing, and that constant low-key sense of resentment (Spoiler: it's probably not just your schedule—it's your boundaries. There, I said it.)  Kendra shares how trauma, perfectionism, and limiting beliefs can keep us stuck in survival mode, and how starting where you are today can lead to massive life transformation. Small, intentional mindset shifts are the key to creating the life you want. If you find yourself continually running on empty, this is what you need more than a bubble bath or a massage (although let's be honest, we're not turning those down either). We also dig into self-advocacy, mantras, burnout recovery, and why your inability to say no isn't “just how you're wired”—it's something you can absolutely change. If you've ever said “I don't have time for self-care” while holding your fourth cup of coffee and solving everyone else's problems, this one's for you.   LInks & Resources: Website: https://fulfillmenttherapy.org/  Social:  https://www.instagram.com/fulfillmenttherapy/ https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100088460742483 https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgkWZyjc6_Q4DsXxS0-sD8g Email: hello@fulfillmenttherapy.org Join the conversation: Share your thoughts with us on social media or in the comments!
