Dr. Michael Bihari moved to Falmouth in 2001. He is a retired pediatrician, health educator and healthcare consultant. With no official war happening between 1972 and 1991 there is often a tendency to overlook this period of history. But when you dive into the stories of women who served in the military during this time you learn the military not only was doing a lot but they also made a lot of changes, changes specifically for women that had a huge impact for women going forward. We are going to look at some of those changes and see how they impacted future generations. In March, I did a four week series focused on the history of military women. In today's episode of Captivated, Stasi shares from a Women at the Well teaching about cultivating a deep relationship with God through consistent prayer and worship, so that in moments of need, our faith is strengthened by this connection with him. By aligning our thoughts with Christ and surrendering to his process, he transforms us from the inside out into Christ's likeness. Stasi encourages us to lay our lives before God daily, arranging our days so we experience deep contentment, joy, and confidence in his faithful love.…..SHOW NOTES:…..VERSES: 2 Corinthians 3:18 (NLT) — So all of us who have had that veil removed can see and reflect the glory of the Lord. And the Lord – who is the Spirit – makes us more and more like him as we are changed into his glorious image.Genesis 1:28 (NIV) — God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”Proverbs 23:7 (KJV) — For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.Matthew 17:1-7 (NLT) — (here, verses 1–3) After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light. Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus.Romans 12:1-2 (NIV) — Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God – this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is – his good, pleasing and perfect will.Romans 12:1-2 (The Message) — …Instead, fix your attention on God. You'll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you.Ephesians 4:23 (NIV) — Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes.Ephesians 4:24 (NIV) — Put on your new nature, created to be like God – truly righteous and holy.Ephesians 5:1 (NIV) — Imitate God, therefore, in everything you do, because you are his dear children.Ephesians 5:15 (NIV) — So be careful how you live. Today, I aim to present a novel perspective on Halloween inspired by the numerous questions I have received. The question we are tackling today is, what should a parent do if Halloween is not what their child wants? This issue usually centers on the apprehensions kids may feel about Halloween, kids who do not enjoy the Halloween experience, exceptional kids, or children on the spectrum. But it could also happen in kids with no diagnosable reason why Halloween would be challenging. In those situations, I always feel it is best to revert to the principles I repeatedly emphasize in explicit parenting. If you are unfamiliar with the term, explicit parenting refers to my distilled philosophy on the challenges of raising children. I purposely chose the term explicit to highlight how that kind of parenting differs from implicit, hidden, or assumed parenting methods. I will share my personal experiences along the way, as we explore this topic. Understanding Co-Regulation with Children Co-regulation involves the creation of a partnership with your child to help them manage their emotions. The first step is to know yourself and understand your triggers and expectations because self-awareness is essential for effective co-regulation. Co-regulation is the process of working together with your child to navigate their emotional world. It means being attuned to their feelings, creating a safe space for expression, and guiding them towards emotional balance. By knowing yourself and your triggers, you can provide better support and understand how your reactions can influence your child's emotional regulation. Setting Realistic Expectations Another crucial aspect is setting realistic expectations. Sometimes, what I envision may not be best for my child. That is why it is essential to acknowledge and accommodate their perspective. Being a supportive parent involves understanding that your child's needs and experiences may not always align with your desires or expectations. Being open to their unique perspective allows us to build a healthier and more harmonious parent-child relationship. Active Listening and Curiosity Active listening, or curiosity, is a cornerstone of co-regulation. Understanding your child's perspective is pivotal for building a strong parent-child bond and fostering healthy emotional development. Active listening involves not just hearing their words but also paying attention to their body language, tone of voice, and unspoken emotions. Being genuinely curious about your kids thoughts and feelings allows you to create an environment where they feel heard and understood. Consistency, Persistence, and Explicitness Consistency and persistence are key components of co-regulation. It is essential to be consistent and supportive when guiding our children. Co-regulation is an ongoing process that requires persistence to create a stable and reliable presence for your child. When we make mistakes or react in ways that are not helpful, it is essential to explicitly acknowledge it, apologize, and work together to repair any emotional ruptures. That teaches children that it is okay to make mistakes and struggle emotionally sometimes. It also shows them that relationships can withstand moments of imperfection. Granting Yourself Grace Co-regulation does not require perfection. It is natural to feel sadness or guilt when expectations do not get met. However, it is crucial to understand that it is okay to grieve our expectations and move forward with a deeper self-awareness, ultimately creating a healthier parent-child dynamic. Parents often put immense pressure on themselves to be flawless in their parenting. However, this is unrealistic and can lead to guilt and self-criticism. Granting yourself grace means acknowledging that you are doing your best, even when things do not go as planned. Grace is an act of self-compassion, helping us to understand that moments of struggle or disappointment do not define our value as parents. What Am I Noticing? Several summers ago, I underwent major surgery, which led to significant weight gain and a profound disconnect from my body. My path to reconnecting with my body took an unexpected turn when I stumbled upon two unique tarot decks that offered me a fresh perspective. I was scrolling through Instagram when I stumbled upon a friend I had met through various networking groups. She had posted a picture of herself conducting tarot card readings, but what caught my eye was the unique tarot deck she was using. It was one I had never encountered before, based on the human physical body. The first one is Be with Your Body Tarot, created by the writer Sarah Jean Chapman and illustrated by Sara Strese. It is a visually stunning deck that veers away from traditional tarot symbolism like pentacles and cups, replacing them with body parts like eyes, feet, hands, and hips. While retaining the major arcana, this deck encourages a deep relationship with your physical body, even incorporating elements from the Earth. The deck includes a meditation at the beginning, fostering gratitude and introspection and providing a profound way to tune into your body. The entire concept of this deck revolves around self-appreciation and reconnection with your physical form. Another intriguing deck I discovered is The Body Tarot, recommended by Amazon. This deck directly associates tarot cards with various body parts. For instance, instead of the devil card, you have the gallbladder, and you get the kidneys in place of the tower. It also delves into the spiritual connections of those body parts. Given my inclinations toward both, the unique blend of traditional medicine and spirituality really appealed to me! Both decks serve as fun and introspective rituals for me. They allow me to intentionally reconnect with my body and acknowledge its incredible aspects, especially as I approach my 50s! The Body Tarot can be found on Amazon, while the Be with Your Body Tarot, a more artistic and slightly pricier option, is available on Etsy. Both are exquisite tools for personal exploration and self-awareness, making them meaningful gifts for yourself or others. I hope today's account sheds light on the power of introspection and highlights the value of seeking self-knowledge. This week, we are delighted to present a previous episode of In Search of Green Marbles that featured Jena Roche, Weiss's Director of Investor Relations and Marketing. But the timing is not coincidental, as tomorrow, August 26th, is Women's Equality Day. Thanks to a 1973 Joint Resolution of Congress, Women's Equality Day was established to commemorate August 26th,1920, which marked the day in which Secretary of State Bainbridge Colby quietly signed the recently ratified 19th Amendment in his home – without any fanfare – that gave American women the right to vote. In doing so, a movement that started over a century earlier could finally declare victory. The journey towards equality beyond suffrage has made many strides since that day 103 years ago, but it's been a struggle. For example, it took all the way to 1974 and the enactment of the The Equal Credit Opportunity Act, before women were able to apply for credit cards and other loans in their own name, regardless of their marital status. And believe it or not, it took all the way until May 12th, 1987, before the first coeducation class graduated from Columbia College. So, while women have made great strides, Weiss believes that it's important to remember that the achievements made by women have been hard fought and have taken way more time than they should have. And the fight for progress continues, which is why we wanted to take this week to recognize one of our formidable women warriors. Please check important disclosures at the end of the episode.Time Stamps:Why is Jena enamored with manatees? What don't they teach women about strength training? Plenty. For starters, how she's unique from males, how she uniquely burns fat during exercise, and how her pre-menopause exercise and post-menopause exercise results will change. Most of all, how to be the absolute happiest and most successful with exercise at any point in her life. So, let's unravel some things, okay? Facts on Women's Exercise Science (Including Strength Training) Only 39% of all exercise and sports medicine research features you. Of the average of 7 hormonal phases a woman goes through from puberty to post-menopause, each demands a unique exercise prescription. She's not getting it. Unless you've known to ask, even if you're working with a trainer one-on-one, is that program made based on research featuring women just like me, chances are you're just gambling. Yes, you've got arms, legs, and a torso similar to men, however, your structure is unique with a wider pelvis, larger Q-angle from hip to knee, and your endocrine system (hormones) are very different than a male. The effect of exercises during phases of your period and during phases of your life will be very different than the effects of the same exercise programs on a male. Women and Fat Burning from Strength Training Fat burning – lipolysis – only happens when insulin falls to a low level. Fasting is one way to get there. Strength training for postmenopausal women is another. Only strength training supports lipolysis optimally and keeps the body there for longer periods of time. Fat oxidation occurs during cardo but it's important to understand that this isn't a good measure of longer-term fat burning. Burning a higher percent of fat at a lower level of exercise often means you're burning it very slowly. You won't burn much fat for fuel and higher intensity rates. However, a small fraction of a big number is potentially bigger. I pointed this term out in You Still Got It, Girl! There are those that swear a “zone 2” training is working for them. No arguments. It likely isn't because of additional fat burning, however. It's due to a reduction of cortisol from the particular type of exercise. Strength Training Facts: How to Increase Your Longevity by 40% Do all the cardio you want. It will take you so far, like maybe to 65 to quote Dr. Stuart Phillips, a speaker at the recent Flipping 50 event, the What, When & Why to Exercise for Women 40+. Cardiovascular exercise might get you to 65, but strength training is what's going to take you beyond 65. Three times weekly vigorous cardio exercise got a nice 27% lower mortality risk than those that don't exercise at all. Respectable. But those who did one or two strength training sessions a week had a 40% lower mortality rate than those who didn't exercise at all. Let's be clear, though, HOW you strength train matters. You will live longer and healthier if the strength training you do results in greater strength and greater lean muscle mass. That in turn is what reduces blood sugar, and inflammation, improves cognition, decreases anxiety, and improves bone density and function. Women's Strength Training and Hypertension For menopausal and postmenopausal women with hypertension risks, the most effective exercise program for lowering blood pressure seems to be a combination of aerobic and strength training. In a review study of randomized controlled trials, combined training generated larger clinically significant reductions in systolic and diastolic blood pressure, as well as mean arterial pressure, for women with prehypertension or hypertension when compared with aerobic training or no exercise training. Interestingly, when assessing the best exercises for menopause, researchers found that aerobic training alone did not result in clinically relevant improvements in overall blood pressure for women with existing hypertension risks. What Else Don't They Teach You About Strength Training? What they also don't teach women about strength training is how to pull it all together. When women think about all the needs for cardio, flexibility, strength, power, agility, bone density… they aren't sure which exercises and how, and how to juggle this with a busy life, working or not. I've got answers and we'd love you to join us. Check out flippingfifty.com we've got an upcoming masterclass addressing how to pull it all together, without ditching your family or work!
