The prospect of a wider conflict with Russia under a scenario where Donald Trump is back in the White House has spooked Europe. Thierry Breton, a European commissioner, is among those sounding the alarm. This month Breton made headlines by recalling how Trump said NATO was dead and the United States would never come to Europe's rescue. The journalist talking to Breton when he made those remarks is Teri Schultz. Teri has focused on European security for three decades, and her reports for National Public Radio and Deutsche Welle are often the first and last word on NATO and defence. In this episode, Teri discusses her exchange with Breton as well as key moments when Trump shook NATO to its core. Teri also reviews the announcement that NATO will hold its largest military exercise for decades. And she assesses her own readiness to follow NATO Military Committee chief Rob Bauer's advice to stock up on a flashlight, a radio, batteries, and water. Such items, says Bauer, are needed to survive the first 36 hours of a conflict of the kind that Swedish officials have been warning citizens about. "It's not a given that we are in peace," Bauer told a news conference. In addition: why Dutch caretaker Prime Minister Mark Rutte is likely to beat Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas in the race to succeed Jens Stoltenberg as the next NATO secretary general. Support the show

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD, is something that impacts countless Veterans and if untreated, can have serious consequences for Veterans and for those around them. According to the American Psychiatric Association, those suffering from PTSD may relive a life-threatening event through flashbacks or nightmares; they may feel sadness, fear or anger; and they may feel detached or estranged from other people. People with PTSD may avoid situations or people that remind them of the traumatic event, and they may have strong negative reactions to something as ordinary as a loud noise or an accidental touch. On this episode of The 9 Line, we speak with Dr. Pamela Finder, PTSD Clinic Program Coordinator, about what exactly qualifies as PTSD, how the VA is uniquely equipped to help Veterans suffering from PTSD, and more.

When we think about our problems, it can sometimes look like things are only happening to us. Our struggles may appear one-sided or like God has left us to deal with it on our own. But when we draw near to God, He plants people in our lives to show us that our pain is not meant to be carried alone. And when He does that, we have a comforting reminder of a God who will never leave us nor forsake us.  Pastors Jimmy and Irene Rollins have a passion to reach all people for God, no matter their background, ethnicity, or life circumstances. As they dreamed of building a diverse congregation, the stress of being leaders of a growing church began to negatively impact them both, and Irene took to coping with alcohol. They share how together, they faced her addiction and the problems that made it come to a head. Author of Confronting Christianity Rebecca McLaughlin shares why it's important to encourage young people to dig into the Word of God. She believes that reading the Bible with her children and helping them work through their questions helps them make sense of their faith, and also teaches them a way to live that is steeped in compassion for others.     Links, Products, and Resources Mentioned: Jesus Calling Podcast Jesus Calling Jesus Always Jesus Listens Past interview: Deb Liu Upcoming interview: Luke Weaver   Jimmy and Irene Rollins Two Equals One Great Commission Alcoholism  Romans 8:28 NIV PTSD [Post-traumatic Stress Disorder]  www.twoequalsone.com Love Outside the Lines  Reframe Your Shame   Rebecca McLaughlin  Confronting Christianity: 12 Hard Questions for the World's Largest Religion  10 Questions Every Teen Should Ask (and Answer) about Christianity Cambridge University Veritas Forum Harvard University Yale University  University of Oxford www.rebeccamclaughlin.org  Exploring the Earliest Gospel: A Kids Bible Study on Jesus and His Good News   Interview Quotes: “We felt like God put on our hearts that if we were going to reach a diverse city, we were going to have to have a diverse church.” - Jimmy Rollins “We got accountability that helped us get to the space of needing to get healthy and to get help. And then as we began to get healthy, we stopped doing the dance of shaming one another and judging one another. And we started to embrace the fact that we both needed grace.” - Jimmy Rollins “We began to look at addiction as not something that I was doing to Jimmy, but rather something I was doing to really medicate pain. And as we began to develop new ways of communication, new ways of embracing pain and grief. We began to approach healing and we did it together.” - Irene Rollins “Connecting with God on a daily basis, a moment-by-moment basis, was a lifeline for me in the beginning of my recovery. And as a leader, as a mother, as a child of God, it is my lifeline still. It was a non-negotiable and still is in my recovery journey.” - Irene Rollins “Divorce has no color. Alcoholism has no socioeconomic temperature. Grief is colorblind. And what we've discovered is that as we begin to stay transparent with our story, as we begin to steward the path of where we are to this greater purpose, pain has been the unifier.” - Jimmy Rollins “It seemed like Jesus provided the most satisfying way of looking at the world, the most satisfying way of understanding my relationships, my intellectual life, my personal life. And I just never looked back from that point.” - Rebecca McLaughlin “Every seeming roadblock to faith in Jesus, when you look more closely, becomes a signpost.” - Rebecca McLaughlin ________________________ Enjoy watching these additional videos from Jesus Calling YouTube channel! We depend on our first responders – firefighters, cops, emergency room workers – every day. They protect us from harm. But what happens when they need our help? Our guest Robert Wisniewski is a Certified Specialist in Workers' Compensation law with the Arizona State Bar and a military veteran. Post-traumatic Stress Disorder is a real thing, PTSD. How does this fit into state Workers' Comp protections? You can't see these mental scars. And every state is different. Some states don't offer benefits for these issues. The military and the Veterans Administration understand the damage we can't see, but it's unclear where first responders fit at a state level Remember, every state has its own rules. This is a tough one, but we're talking about our hometown heroes. There can be a stigma, and sometimes issues don't get reported until it's too late, or the chain of command drops the ball. And unlike falling off a ladder or getting in a car wreck on the job, PTSD injuries may be the result of repeated incidents over a long term. It's hard to say “when” the mental injury happened, how do you make that claim? Courts are struggling with this. Non-physical stressors may be limited to a single incident, not a working lifetime of stress. We owe first responders support and care when they need it. This is a confusing and complicated issue. But this is important.

Traumatic experiences across the lifespan often lead to long-term negative consequences on mental health. Recent studies on trauma- and stress-related disorders reveal diverse trajectories of human responses to adverse life experiences. Various mental disorders associated with stress, such as adjustment disorder, prolonged grief, or complex posttraumatic stress disorder have been studied extensively providing novel knowledge, but also opening up new issues in how to better understand, prevent and treat these conditions. The huge global burden of trauma calls for novel approaches to providing trauma treatment for those in need. yearly before our Summer Retreat we review what going for refuge to the three jewels means. In this Talk Christopher Kakuyo talks about taking refuge in general and more specifically regarding taking refuge in the Buddha.  As westerns we seem to have a challenge taking refuge in the Buddha. This may be because of our Post Religious' Stress Disorder. We embrace the Dharma and even the Sangha, but the Buddha we keep at arms length, lest he becomes some sort of deity.  Christopher thinks, that by doing this we are doing a disservice to our practice.    EXCERPT By keeping this distance from the Buddha, we miss out on something; we miss out on the Buddha's personality, temperament, and example. We miss an intimate human connection to one of the most fully and realized humans.  I struggle with this.  There are times that I feel so connected to the historical Buddha and or the mythic Buddha Amida, that I find tears in my eyes when washing the statue'd face of the Buddha. I have found that my practice is easier and more natural during these times. I am easier to get along with, and when I feel disconnected from the Buddha, or the Buddha feels like nothing more than some dusty figure of history, my practice becomes more challenging if I am practicing at all.  I appreciate this from Subhuti, a Buddhist teacher in the Tritania order. Subhuti writes about re-imagining the Buddha and how we need to try to imagine the Buddha and his Enlightenment in a way that intellectually and emotionally stirs us.   Why emotionally?  Our practice is not just a practice of the mind but the heart-mind. In Chinese kanji, the symbol for heart and mind are the same; there exists no independent thought without accompanying feeling, no distinct feeling without thought, and no compassion in the absence of intellect—in short: no heart without mind or mind without heart. Our connection to the Buddha is intellectual and emotional at the same time so that we can mobilize our energies to Go for Refuge to him, to his teachings and example. How do we do that for us who have and will be taking refuge in the Buddha? He writes,  "We can only imagine the Buddha wholeheartedly by discovering his image in our minds, inspired and supported by the images around us. Images of this kind cannot be ordered or devised. They must live and grow and, like plants, they must emerge from their own natural environments: the psyches of the individuals in which they appear.

Post-traumatic stress disorder is a diagnosis discussed frequently for families navigating the NICU. A family's personal journey can also cause strain on marriage and a change in family dynamics with siblings at home. We will be speaking about these important topics today with Kellie Wicklund and Jenny Limm. Kellie Wicklund is a licensed Psychotherapist with 20 years of experience, and is the Owner and Clinical Director of the Maternal Wellness Center. Kellie is certified by Postpartum Support International as a Perinatal Mental Health Specialist. Her experience with both private and community clients has nurtured a passion in the area of reproductive health psychology — a specialty that acknowledges the complexity and trials of the developmental process of parenthood. Jenny is a marriage and family therapist, with specialization in sex therapy holding both a masters degree from Drexel University's Couple and Family Therapy Program and Widener University's Master of Education in Human Sexuality. She is currently a PhD candidate at Widener University to officially become a sex-doctor, as a clinical sexologist. Prior to this specialization in sex therapy, Jenny had extensive experience working with teens and families in crisis, as a lead clinician at a adolescent psychiatric hospital (both inpatient, and partial hospitalization programs), as well as lead therapist in family based services in Philadelphia. On this podcast episode: - Kelly and Jenny discuss Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, among NICU families, and what that actually means. - You will hear information about how to know if you are experiencing symptoms of PTSD. - Knowing the NICU experience is traumatic, as parents, we will find out how not to transfer that anxiety and feelings of trauma to our own children as they are babies and grow older. - With our personal story, we have always been very protective of Claire probably out of fear and just all that we have navigated through to help her feel successful.
