We're back! Thank you so much for your patience as we took the month of June off. We have missed you guys!  Today we will be discussing the 1927 Bath Consolidated School Bombing/Massacre…  Unfortunately, this day in age, we are all too familiar with school violence, so today we are going to go back in history, to Bath, Michigan, to take a look at the worst school bombing in US history.  Puzzling enough, this blood bath was perpetrated by a “respected and admired” member of Bath's small community…a man by the name of Andrew Kehoe.  At the end of Kehoe's attack on Bath's consolidated school, over 40 people would be dead. 38 of those victims would be small children.  So who is Andrew Kehoe and what in the world would persuade him to take the lives of innocent children? I'm not sure if we will leave this episode with more questions or answers, but one thing's for sure, we will be well versed in the worst school bombing in US history and the monster behind it…

The new edition of this Michigan Notable Book includes a new introduction and stories from interviews with two additional survivors, Myrna (Gates) Coulter and Ralph Witchell, which took place after the first edition was published in 2009.On May 18, 1927, the small town of Bath, Michigan, was forever changed when Andrew Kehoe set off a cache of explosives concealed in the basement of the local school. Thirty-eight children and six adults were dead, among them Kehoe, who had literally blown himself to bits by setting off a dynamite charge in his car. The next day, on Kehoe's farm, what was left of his wife—burned beyond recognition after Kehoe set his property and buildings ablaze—was found tied to a handcart, her skull crushed. With seemingly endless stories of school violence and suicide bombers filling today's headlines, Bath Massacre serves as a reminder that terrorism and large-scale murder are nothing new. In 1922, Bath Township, Michigan approved the creation of the first Bath Consolidated school district. Unfortunately, in order to pay for the new school, the township property taxes were increased. Andrew Kehoe, Michigan native and trustee of the new Bath township school board, was outraged by the tax increase and his loss in the town clerk 1925 election and began plotting a massacre of the citizens and schoolchildren of Bath Township. On May 18, 1927, he would put his plan into action. Andrew would become the mastermind behind America’s deadliest school massacre to date, which would claim the lives of 45 innocent victims, including 38 children.

Raised on a farm in Michigan, Kehoe would grow up to be adept at working with machinery and electricity. Though he and his wife were well liked by the neighbors, there was something dark and off-putting about Kehoe. Nobody consciously realized it until after it was far too late. After losing reelection as treasurer of the Bath Township School Board, Kehoe would go on to commit appalling acts of violence. He murdered his wife and bombed a newly constructed school in Bath, Michigan killing 38 people and injuring another 58. Opening music licensed from Peder B. Author John Smolens is an award winning novelist whose historical fiction "Day of Days" tells the story of the tragic and shocking bombing of the Bath, Michigan Schoolhouse in 1927. There were 45 people killed in that bombing and countless children and adults injured. In the spring 1927, Andrew Kehoe, the treasurer for the school board in Bath, Michigan, spent weeks surreptitiously wiring the public school, as well as his farm, with hundreds of pounds of dynamite. The explosions on May 18, the day before graduation, killed and maimed dozens of children, as well as teachers, administrators, and village residents, including Kehoe’s wife, Nellie. A respected member of the community, the Kehoe himself died when he ignited his truck, loaded with crates of explosives and scrap metal. In its portrayal of several Bath school children, Day of Days examines how such a trauma scars one’s life long after the dead are laid to rest and the wounded heal, and how an anguished but resilient American village copes with the bombing, which in its time seemed beyond comprehension, and yet now may be considered a harbinger of the future. One survivor, Beatrice Turcott, who decades later lies on her death bed, recalls the spring of 1927, and how this haunting experience has led her to the conviction that one does not survive the present without reconciling hard truths about the past. John Smolens has published twelve works of fiction, eleven novels and a collection of short stories. His most recent novel is "Day of Days" , published by Michigan State University Press. Let Them Fight: A Comedy History Podcast

Well, dear listeners. Christmas has come and gone, and I'm sure at least some of you have children who weren't grateful about the gifts you bought them. So boy do we have the episode for you today. Andrew Kehoe, I'm not going to say he's a hero, but you should thank him for his service. He provided so much to his hometown of Bath (yea, I know, the name is hot garbage) and all they did in return was offer hardship and scorn until he did what any red blooded American would. Listen in and learn about it!

The leader of a Mormon sect comes to an untimely end at the hands of his enemies. - Andrew Kehoe, the “Dynamite Farmer,” becomes the perpetrator of the worst school massacre in history, in the year 1927. - The diabolical mind of Arthur Waite, a chronic liar and “Heiress Hunter” who hatches a plot to poison an entire family and inherit their fortune. - Why the true crime genre remains such a popular subject for writers, and how the “gapers block” is one explanation of our ongoing fascination with the macabre. On the morning of May 18, 1927 in Bath Township, Michigan, a 55-year old municipal worker named Andrew Kehoe used a timed detonator to set off a bomb he had planted at the local school. Kehoe was Treasurer of the School Board, so he had unfettered access to the school. According to friends and neighbors, he was having personal issues with his wife (who he had murdered days prior) and extreme financial difficulties. He was also severely disgruntled about having lost a local election the previous autumn. Whatever his reasons, Kehoe took out his rage on the 38 schoolchildren he killed that day. It remains the deadliest attack on a school in US history. Sadly, it wasn't the first-- there were numerous reports of school shootings throughout the 1800s and before. And as we all know too well, it wouldn't be the last. Last week's shooting in Florida is another tragic stain in the pages of US history. And it's completely understandable that emotions are running high now. People are demanding action. They want their government to “do something.” The problem, of course, is what we've been talking about so far this year in our daily conversations: emotional decisions tend to be bad decisions-- and that includes public policy. We keep hearing the phrase “Common Sense Gun Laws,” for example. And that certainly sounds reasonable. Who could possibly be against common sense? [As an aside, I do wonder why “common sense” is only reserved for the gun control debate. Why doesn't anyone demand common sense airport security? Or a common sense federal budget?] But it's never quite so simple. Many of these “common sense” solutions are emotional reactions. As an example, the Florida shooter in last week's tragedy is only 19 years old. So now one of the proposals being tossed around is to have a minimum age limit to be able to purchase a firearm. I suppose if the shooter happened to have been 70 years old, people would be talking about having a maximum age limit instead. Yet neither of these “common sense solutions” really solves the problem. A big part of this is because no one really knows what's causing the problem to begin with. We know that there are far too many people committing acts of violence in schools and other public places. And, sure, a lot of the time they use firearms. But we're also seeing murderous rampages with cement trucks, U-Hauls, and everyday appliances like pressure cookers. Any of these can be turned into a weapon of mass destruction. But the debate only focuses on firearms. One side presupposes that more regulations and fewer guns will make everyone safer. The other side of the debate, of course, argues that more guns and fewer regulations will make everyone safer. The reality is that there's no clear evidence that either side is correct. Australia is often held up as an example of a nation that passed strict gun laws (including confiscation) in 1996 following several mass shootings. And yes, gun violence dropped precipitously. Australia now has one of the lowest murder rates in the world. But contrast that with Serbia, for example, which is the #2 country in the world in terms of guns per capita (the US is #1). Serbia has a strong gun culture and fairly liberal laws. Yet its gun violence rate is incredibly low, on par with Australia's. There are plenty of examples in the world of places that passed strict gun laws, and violence decreased (Colombia). Others where violence INCREASED after passing strict gun laws (Venezuela, Chicago). Other examples of places which have LOW levels of gun violence, yet liberal laws (Serbia). And still others with LOW levels of gun violence and fairly strict laws (Chile). The point is that you can look at the data 10,000 different ways and never really find a clear correlation. So there HAS to be something else going on. Is it cultural? Perhaps. Japan, for example,

This is still the deadliest act of school violence in the history of the US and by the time Andrew finished with his mass murdering plot, he and 44 other people, including 38 children and his wife, would be dead and another 58 seriously injured. On May 18, 1927, the small town of Bath, Michigan, was forever changed when Andrew Kehoe set off a cache of explosives concealed in the basement of the local school. Thirty-eight children and six adults were dead, among them Kehoe, who had literally blown himself to bits by setting off a dynamite charge in his car. The next day, on Kehoe's farm, what was left of his wife---burned beyond recognition after Kehoe set his property and buildings ablaze---was found tied to a handcart, her skull crushed. With seemingly endless stories of school violence and suicide bombers filling today's headlines, Bath Massacre serves as a reminder that terrorism and large-scale murder are nothing new. "A chilling and historic character study of the unfathomable suffering that desperation and fury, once unleashed inside a twisted mind, can wreak on a small town. Contemporary mass murderers Timothy McVeigh, Columbine's Dylan Klebold, and Virginia Tech's Seung-Hui Cho can each trace their horrific genealogy of terror to one man: Bath school bomber Andrew Kehoe.
