Tiede-ja kulttuuriministeri Mari-Leena Talvitie on myöntänyt kymmenelle taiteilijalle ja toimijalle kulttuurin Suomi-palkinnot, joista yksi myönnettiin kunniakirjan muodossa. Palkinnon sai mm. oululainen tanssitaiteilija ja koreografi Pirjo Yli-Maunula. Palkitsemisperustelujen mukaan hän on tehnyt mittavan uran lukuisissa eri tehtävissä esittävän taiteen kentällä niin kotimaassa kuin kansainvälisesti. Yli-Maunulan monisyinen työ on vaikuttanut laajasti ja syvästi tanssialan kehitykseen Suomessa. Taiteellisen työnsä ohella hän on ollut mukana luomassa ja kehittämässä pohjoisen Suomen tanssin toimintarakenteita 1980-luvun alusta lähtien. Pirjo Yli-Maunulan teoksissa ainutlaatuista on rikas sisällöllinen puhuttelevuus, immersiivisyys sekä eri taiteenalojen lomittuminen. Hänen tinkimätön työnsä esittävän taiteen edistämiseksi on yli 20:n vuoden ajan mahdollistanut kansainvälisen tason tanssi- ja sirkusteosten tuottamisen Ouluun. Vuodesta 1993 lähtien jaettu palkinto on suuruudeltaan 12 660 euroa.

The Tiede family had gone to spend Christmas at the family cabin in Oakley, Utah. Taylor and Deli shot their mother, father, and grandmother and planned to burn down the home. The sisters owe their survival to their heroic father, Rolf, who, though wounded, was able to get on a snowmobile and alert his brother, Randy, to call 911. When 39 year old Bernie Tiede confessed to the murder of his friend and companion, 81 year old Marjorie Nugent in November 1996, the revelation came as a shock to the small town of Carthage, Texas. The two had been inseparable friends since the death of Nugent's husband in 1990 and as far as anyone in Carthage could tell, Nugent couldn't have picked a more devoted companion than Tiede. Yet as the details of the crime began to emerge, a strange story began to take shape—Tiede's supposed motive for the murder was to gain access to Nugent's fortune, but what he did with that money once he had access defied the logic and expectations of greed.The story of Bernie Tiede and Marjorie Nugent should have ended with the trial and conviction of Tiede, but a few years later, Bernie's story became the subject of a big Hollywood film, shining a spotlight on the story and raising new questions about the extent of Bernie's responsibility for the murder. Näitä revontulia todistivat lukemattomat ihmiset jopa Kuubassa saakka. Tapahtumaa kutsutaan Carringtonin tapahtumaksi havainnoitsijansa, tiedemies Richard Carringtonin mukaan. Tiede ei vielä 1800-luvulla kyennyt selittämään ilmiötä, mutta tätä nykyä ymmärrämme jo paljon enemmän. Nyt tiedämme, että Carringtonin tapahtuman kaltaisia aurinkomyrskyjä tapahtuu säännöllisesti. Opetus- ja kulttuuriministeriö onkin teettämässä laajan selvityksen siitä, uhkaako vieraiden kielten nopea yleistyminen suomen kielen asemaa ja kehitystä. Mitä pitäisi ajatella siitä, että uudelle ostoskeskukselle annetaan englanninkielinen nimi tai että Helsingissä on ravintoloita, joissa ei saa palvelua suomen kielellä? Onko englannin kielen leviäminen joka paikkaan oikeasti kirous vai voisiko se olla myös mahdollisuus? Onko suomen kieli uhanalainen? Entä muut kotimaiset kielet?
