Canada has a critical financial advice gap, where 51% of households are "unadvised" — a disparity that hits lower-income families hardest. The discussion explores how excessive regulatory burden and economic factors prevent middle-income Canadians from accessing professional financial guidance, leading many to rely on social media influencers instead. Through analysis of the CD Howe Institute's "Regulatory Reset" report, the hosts unpack how this advice gap affects mortgage decisions, homeownership wealth, retirement savings, and national productivity. Advised investors accumulate roughly 2.3 times more assets over 15 years than non-advised peers, yet only 38% of lower-income households receive financial advice compared to 60% of high-income households. 35% of Canadian retail investors now make investment decisions based on social media influencers rather than professional advisors, while banks leave a 16-percentage-point gap in the financial planning advice customers actually need. Financial services regulations have increased 51% since 2006, making it uneconomical for advisors to serve mass-market clients and contributing to underutilization of tax-advantaged savings programs — only 22.4% of eligible Canadians contributed to RRSPs in 2022. The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has welcomed recent rulings by the National Consumer Tribunal, ordering two car dealerships to refund customers after investigations found they were sold defective second-hand vehicles. The ruling follows an investigation by the NCC after consumers complained against the services received from Gauteng-based, Kia East Rand (PTY) Ltd and Cape Town-based car dealership, TM Cars (PTY) Ltd. The Tribunal found that both dealerships contravened the Consumer Protection Act by not resolving the defects in the cars they sold when they were informed of them. With Ireland's Auto Enrolment pension scheme due to launch in January 2026, Campion Insurance is warning that many employers are dangerously underprepared. Payroll errors, compliance risks, and employee confusion are looming unless businesses act now. To discuss this further, Alan Morrissey was joined by Ivan Dunne, Head of Financial Services at Campion Insurance. The yawning gap in the pension provision between men and women has been exposed. The average Irish woman's pension pot is a “staggering” 40pc less than men's. An average pension pot for a man in Ireland is €102,000. But it is only €60,500 for women, according to research by the Irish-owned network of financial advisers Ask Acorn. Clare fans are being advised to allow plenty of time to get to Kerry for the Munster Football Final. Peter Keane's side are travelling to Fitzgerald Park in Killarney tomorrow to take on Kerry with throw-in at 1:45pm. As the match takes place on the same day as the Rally of the Lakes, Kerry Gardaí are urging motorists to leave "very early" to avoid being caught in severe congestion. Mr Trump has enacted tough tariffs on the US's largest trading partners - China, Canada and Mexico - sparking retaliatory tariffs from all three countries. It's seen sharemarkets becoming volatile today, with New Zealanders being advised it may be best not to look at your Kiwisaver balance for a wee while. Money correspondent Susan Edmunds reports.
