November 2001, Renton, Washington. Gary Leon Ridgway was working at the Kenworth Truck Factory when Police arrived to arrest him on suspicion of murdering four women nearly 20 years earlier. Advancements in DNA profiling and lab testing, enabled investigators to link Ridgway to more murders from the same time. Almost 50 women had suffered at the hands of Ridgway. Following his arrest, police interrogated him numerous times over a 5 month period, hoping they would learn Ridgway's motive for brutally killing these women and to finally put the monster behind bars. **TRIGGER WARNING - GRAPHIC CONTENT/DESCRIPTIONS OF MURDER**Time Stamps00:00:00 - 00:00:57 - Network ad, theme & intro00:00:57 - 00:18:14 - Background00:18:14 - 00:42:29 - Bodies found, investigation and interrogation (over 5 months)00:42:29 - 01:18:49 - Arrest/charges, more detail from interrogations, trial and aftermath01:18:49 - 01:40:04 - Next episode announcement, general chat/recommendations *SPOILER WARNING* - (From (Now TV/Sky), Severance (Apple TV), The White Lotus S3 (Now TV/Sky), Adolescence (Netflix), The Twister: Caught in the Storm (Netflix), It Ends with Us (2024), The Shallows (2016).Closing theme (pop punk AI version)Twitter: @crimeslikeInstagram: @crimesliketheseMusic by: Glitterwolf, Twitter Spotify Check our other podcast on the Black Fur Network!Aah!fter Horror with hosts Paul, Mike, Dan and CheerInstagram: @aahfterhorrorpodcast

The story of Gary Leon Ridgway is a challenging story. Not just because so many books, films, and documentaries have already been made about him, but because there simply are so many victims and to struggle with how proper respect to their memory can be given. Much ado has been made in the media, and in previous episodes, about how most of the killer's victims were prostitutes. I wonder if the same emphasis had been made on the victims' profession if they had been accountants. Well, to be honest, I actually do think much had been made of such a scenario. A serial killer killing dozens of female accountants had truly been quite unique.Become a Patron today: https://www.patreon.com/theserialkillerpodcastWebsite: https://www.theserialkillerpodcast.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/theskpodcastInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/serialkillerpodTwitter: https://twitter.com/serialkillerpodSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-serial-killer-podcast. He was initially convicted of 48 separate murders. As part of his plea bargain, another conviction was added, bringing the total number of convictions to 49, making him the second most prolific serial killer in United States history according to confirmed murders. He is the former elected sheriff of King County, Washington. Reichert served with the King County sheriff's department beginning in 1972. He was a member of the Green River Task Force, formed to track down the so-called ”Green River killer” aided by the infamous Ted Bundy In 2001, DNA evidence identified Gary Leon Ridgway as the Green River killer. In 1997, he was appointed sheriff of King County and re-opened the ”Green River Killer” case and solved it in 2001! In 2004, Reichert published the autobiography, Chasing the Devil: My Twenty-Year Quest to Capture the Green River Killer.
In Salt Lake City, Utah in 1985, there were three different bombs that killed two people and seriously injured one. Gary Leon Ridgway, conhecido como Green River Killer, é um assassino em série americano. Ele foi condenado por 49 casos de assassinato.
Gary Leon Ridgway, known as the Green River Killer, is one of the most prolific serial killers in American history. He was convicted of 48 murders, but confessed to a staggering 71, spanning from 1982 to 1998. He earned his nickname after many of his victims were discovered along Washington's famous Green River. Most of his victims were young, vulnerable women, many of them being sex workers who Ridgway had hired. His preferred method of killing was strangulation, after which he would dump the bodies in wooded areas or the river. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/crimecog/support
It began in the summer of 1982 with the bodies of five young women being found in Washington States Green River. All of them had one thing in common, each worked as a prostitute on Seattle's SeaTac Strip. Over the ensuing months, more young women would go missing, many more. Police who had dealt with Ted Bundy only a few short years before hand, were quick to form a task force to track the faceless killer down. What none of them knew at the time however, was that this particular killer was unlike any they had seen before. A monster that lived among them, and was a part of the community, who existed solely to hunt and slay the young women that worked their streets and would later claim that the murder of women was his career. This week we will be looking into the early murders and the formation of the task force that would eventually lead to the capture of Gary Leon Ridgway. In 2001, when writer Jill McCabe Johnson heard the details about a newly caught "Green River Killer" named Gary, she thought a few of the details matched a man she met and took home from a country-western bar in Seattle as a young and eager 18 year old girl. However familiar the description was, she shrugged it off first as a coincidence. Then, the more evidence mounted, the more it became undeniable that it was the same Gary she remembered sitting outside her own apartment a decade before. This June, Jill used her writing and investigative skills to pen an essay about her chilling discovery for Slate. As a prolific poet, Jill was used to an audience, but this story attracted attention and interest from thousands worldwide. Many wrote in to share their own close calls with serial killers, including Ted Bundy. Jill joins me this week to talk about her night with a serial killer who later was convicted of killing 49 women and girls (probably more), one of those victims also living in her same apartment complex. She shares how most serial killers come across not only normal, but charming and charismatic, and her conflicting emotions around this story even to this day. Jill opens up about why she decided to write Gary Leon Ridgway as he lived out his sentence at a Washington State penitentiary. Lastly, Jill gives great memoir writing advice for owning your pain without being a victim, and transcending your self pity.

The Green River Killer was a nearly mythological case for decades. Even after apprehension, plea deals, and the identification of missing and murdered women, it remains one of the most chilling cases born of systemic hatred and violence. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Gary Leon Ridgway is believed to have murdered at least 71 teenage girls and women near Seattle and Tacoma, Washington. In court statements, Ridgway later reported that he had killed so many that he lost count. A majority of the murders occurred between 1982 and 1984. This is a killer that Heather has NEVER looked up until now. Not too sure why, other than the fact that she felt as though he was way overdone in the True Crime genre and perhaps not too fascinating. However, Scott has a way of providing information and details that will pull someone in and that’s exactly what he did here!Gary Leon Ridgway was born on February 18, 1949 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He is responsible for at least 49 murders of teenage runaways and female sex workers from 1982 until 2001 – most of these murders occurring between 1982 and 1984 though. Gary aka “The Green River Killer” has confessed to at least 71 murders but said that there very well could be more but he lost count. Gary Leon Ridgway, also known as the Green River Killer, is an American serial killer. He was initially convicted of 48 separate murders and is presumed to be responsible for more than 90. As part of his plea bargain, an additional conviction was added, bringing the total number of convictions to 49, making him the most prolific serial killer in U.S. history according to confirmed murders. He murdered numerous women and girls in Washington State during the 1980s and 1990s. Most of Ridgway's victims were alleged to be sex workers and other women in vulnerable situations, including underage runaways. The press gave him his nickname after the first five victims were found in the Green River before his identity was known. He strangled the women, usually by hand but sometimes using ligatures. After strangling them, he would dump their bodies in forested and overgrown areas in King County, often returning to the dead bodies to have sexual intercourse with them. On November 30, 2001, as Ridgway was leaving the Kenworth truck factory where he worked in Renton, Washington, he was arrested for the murders of four women whose cases were linked to him through DNA evidence. As part of a plea bargain wherein he agreed to disclose the locations of still-missing women, he was spared the death penalty and received a sentence of life imprisonment without parole.
