In 1940s Italy, a desperate mother believed that turning three women into soap and tea cakes would save her son from dying in World War II.HOUR ONE: "It was a terrible sight… I have seen horrible sights, but never anything like this.” Those were the words of the local undertaker after seeing the results of a triple murder laying before him in 1932 Pennsylvania. (The Axe Murders of Lykens) *** A gypsy once told Leonarda that all of her children would die before her. A different fortuneteller told her that she faced either a future in prison or in a criminal asylum. And the reason she gave for becoming a serial killer is something you'd hear out of a bad direct-to-video horror film. And that's a tiny sample of this woman's insanely dark life – which began even before her birth. (The Woman Who Made Soap) *** Ireland's Loftus Hall is considered by many to be the most haunted location on all the Emerald Isle. But the most infamous story of Loftus Hall begins not with terror, but with romance… with a beautiful young girl falling madly in love with… the devil. (The Girl Who Fell In Love With The Devil) ==========HOUR TWO: 7-year-old Maria went missing in 1957, and while her body was later found, her murder was never solved and the case went cold – until 50 years later when the case was finally solved and closed. But it turns out everybody was wrong. (A Cold Case Finally Solved… Then Unsolved) *** If you take State Route 375 through Nevada you will pass by the infamous Area-51. But of course they are not going to let you in, even if you ask nicely. But State Route 375 isn't called the Extraterrestrial Highway just because of one area you can't visit – there's a lot more to it than that. (The 98-Mile Extraterrestrial Highway) *** Hikers sometimes get lost in the woods, as do children of course. But those on bikes almost never disappear; but there is one tragic case of a fat tire rider who couldn't be found. (The Vanished Mountain Biker) *** In 1910 two witnesses see a pair of lights that transform into radiant beings with “human form.” You might dismiss the report as misidentification of ball lightning or some other natural explanation – but in 1952 those radiant humanoid beings of light were seen again! (Close Encounters of the Fairy Kind)==========SUDDEN DEATH OVERTIME: More of the story of Ireland's Loftus Hall and the young girl who fell in love with the devil! (The Girl Who Fell In Love With The Devil) *** Chlorosis was a frequently diagnosed disease during the 19th century that gave the skin of the afflicted a greenish tinge. As a cure, doctors told young women to get married and reproduce. As you can probably surmise, the cure was not in the least bit effective. (The Girls Who Turned Green) *** Have you heard of the poor girl who was bullied and pushed down into a sewer by those whom she thought were her friends? I'll tell you the story. And while this episode is not a creepypasta episode, so all the stories are supposed to be non-fiction, that is… true, I will be sharing this urban legend anyway – because when it comes to urban legends, sometimes it's best to err on the side of caution and simply assume they are true. (The Urban Legend of Carmen Winstead) *** Weirdo Family member Brad Hicks describes the experience as “cool… and creepy as hell”. We'll tell you his story. (The Thing In The Light) *** More of the story of Ireland's Loftus Hall and the young girl who fell in love with the devil! Retired FBI agent and criminal profiler Candice DeLong dives into the case of Leonarda Cianciulli, “The Soap-Maker of Correggio.” Between 1939 and 1940, Leonarda – a popular store owner in the Italian town of Correggio — lured three women to their deaths before turning their remains into tea cakes and soap. Her motive? To save her son from dying in World War II. Candice analyzes how years of tragedy and a series of unfavorable fortune readings led Leonarda to developing a dangerous delusion that turned her into a cold-blooded killer.Be the first to know about Wondery's newest podcasts, curated recommendations, and more! In this Box, we journey into the macabre and mysterious. First, we unravel the gruesome story of Leonarda Cianciulli, Italy's notorious "Soap-Maker of Correggio," who turned murder into a grotesque form of art—literally. Was it madness, superstition, or something far darker that drove her? Next, we scale the rugged slopes of the Andes to confront El Duende, the goblin-like creature said to haunt villages and terrorize those who stray too far from safety. Could this ancient legend hold a seed of truth, or is it simply a tale spun by fearful imaginations? Then, we introduce you to Mr. Fritz, the ventriloquist dummy with a mind of its own. Mysteriously moving its eyes and escaping locked cases, this haunted doll has raised more than a few eyebrows—and chills up spines. Finally, we follow the gripping manhunt for The Mad Trapper, a Canadian fugitive whose bizarre behavior, bulletproof toughness, and uncanny evasion tactics left both police and the public in awe. Was he merely a criminal on the run or something altogether more terrifying? Each story is a chilling reminder that the world has more mysteries than we may ever know. My name is Carol and I am the founder of Bolle di Natura. I was born & grew up in Italy & now living in Paris after spending 13 years of my life in NYC working in the Corporate world.I have a master in Economics and Business and I worked for many years in Finance and Accounting in Real Estate Development & Construction Management. In the past I made soap sporadically with the intention of reducing plastic waste in our home but never had time to make it consistently due to my hectic work life. Then COVID-19 happened and I found myself stuck at home as everyone else.Washing hands with soaps became a necessity as well as making soaps to make sure our hands were clean but also not too dry from the frequent usage, especially for my little one who started having rashes from the stores bought soaps and detergents. The lockdown definitely helped me further develop this passion. I spent a lot of time home studying about cosmetic formulations, I completed 2 training courses in Zero Waste Soap Making and Zero Waste Hair Care to learn how to formulate my own recipes, attended a course in herbalism while learning how to source good quality & sustainable ingredients. This passion grew each day and made me so happy to see all the many products I was able to make each time... Learning new things and finding time for myself really helped me alleviate all the stress and the tension that built up from what was happening outside of home.Bolle di Natura was founded in New York and when me and my family decided to move back to Europe, I then decided to take this side hobby to the next level as an opportunity to inspire people about making sustainable choices in self care, support small business ethics and mostly reduce plastic pollution.links to your workwww.bolledinatura.comINSTA: @bolledinaturaSupport the show

Having lost several children to childhood illnesses, Leonarda Cianciulli was very protective of her surviving children and was willing to do anything to protect them. So, when the deeply superstitious Leonarda was warned by a fortune teller that all her children would die at a young age, the forty-six-year-old shopkeeper determined that the best way to keep her son alive was to offer human sacrifices in exchange for Giuseppe's safety. Ove the course of a year, Leonarda murdered three local women and disposed of their bodies with caustic chemicals, using any remaining biological evidence in the creation of soaps, candles, cookies, and cakes, which she shared with others in her community.Thank you to the lovely David White, of Bring Me the Axe podcast, for research assistance :)ReferencesBaltimore Sun. 1946.
