Retired FBI agent and criminal profiler Candice DeLong dives into the case of Leonarda Cianciulli, “The Soap-Maker of Correggio.” Between 1939 and 1940, Leonarda – a popular store owner in the Italian town of Correggio — lured three women to their deaths before turning their remains into tea cakes and soap. Her motive? To save her son from dying in World War II. Candice analyzes how years of tragedy and a series of unfavorable fortune readings led Leonarda to developing a dangerous delusion that turned her into a cold-blooded killer.Be the first to know about Wondery's newest podcasts, curated recommendations, and more!

Tie potom rozdávala známim a susedom. Scenár: Michaela MaterákováNámet a dramaturgia: Diana KacarováHlas: Marek MajeskýZvuková produkcia: Miroslav BaričičPodcast produkcia: Simona Mičová

This week I tell the story of my friend Rosaria Cianciulli's great-great aunt, Leonarda Cianciulli- better known as the Soap Maker of Correggio- who murdered and mutilated three women in order to save her son from death. In this Box, we journey into the macabre and mysterious. First, we unravel the gruesome story of Leonarda Cianciulli, Italy's notorious "Soap-Maker of Correggio," who turned murder into a grotesque form of art—literally. Was it madness, superstition, or something far darker that drove her? Next, we scale the rugged slopes of the Andes to confront El Duende, the goblin-like creature said to haunt villages and terrorize those who stray too far from safety. Could this ancient legend hold a seed of truth, or is it simply a tale spun by fearful imaginations? Then, we introduce you to Mr. Fritz, the ventriloquist dummy with a mind of its own. Mysteriously moving its eyes and escaping locked cases, this haunted doll has raised more than a few eyebrows—and chills up spines. Finally, we follow the gripping manhunt for The Mad Trapper, a Canadian fugitive whose bizarre behavior, bulletproof toughness, and uncanny evasion tactics left both police and the public in awe. Was he merely a criminal on the run or something altogether more terrifying? Each story is a chilling reminder that the world has more mysteries than we may ever know. Having lost several children to childhood illnesses, Leonarda Cianciulli was very protective of her surviving children and was willing to do anything to protect them. So, when the deeply superstitious Leonarda was warned by a fortune teller that all her children would die at a young age, the forty-six-year-old shopkeeper determined that the best way to keep her son alive was to offer human sacrifices in exchange for Giuseppe's safety. Ove the course of a year, Leonarda murdered three local women and disposed of their bodies with caustic chemicals, using any remaining biological evidence in the creation of soaps, candles, cookies, and cakes, which she shared with others in her community.Thank you to the lovely David White, of Bring Me the Axe podcast, for research assistance :)ReferencesBaltimore Sun. 1946. Venture through the creaking door if you dare. In this episode, JR relates the batsh*t beliefs of a devoted mother who loved her children to a fault.Welcome to northern Italy, 1939. Under the fascist stylings of Mussolini, the nation teeters on the brink of war. Leonarda Cianciulli is a humble widow determined to keep her children safe from the horrors of conflict, inflation, bad luck, indigestion and a million other enemies - small and large - anything which threatens to harm her loin's most magnificent discharges. Cianciulli has devised a divine plan to cleanse the evil from her midst. Using (dark) arts and crafts, lye, distilled water, an ax, an unhealthy dollop of OCD, and a belief system doing some massive heavy lifting, Cianciulli has almost everything she needs. She's missing one ingredient, but it's nothing she can't borrow from her neighbors.Join us by the fire for potent drinks filled with tiny umbrellas and a cannabis combo platter that will keep you tripping over your own tongue, as JR comes clean with the crew about Leonarda Cianciulli, the Soap Maker of Correggio - or Bubbles, if you're nasty.*No tea cakes were involved in the making of this episode.

...The full transcript of this Episode is available via "Luisa's learn Italian Premium" - das komplette Transcript / die Show-Notes zu allen Episoden sind über Luisa's Podcast Premium verfügbar. Located in the Borghese Gallery in Rome, Correggio's sensual painting of the amorous relationship between Jupiter and the daughter of the King of Argos is sublime. Based on the account in Ovid's "Metamorphoses,'' Correggio is able to transform a literary metaphor into an equally powerful and erotic visual metaphor. In 1827, the painting was acquired by Cammillo IV Borghese, husband of Paulina Bonaparte, during one of his many trips to Paris, and installed into the family's extraordinary art collection.
Correggio's breath-taking dome fresco in the dome of Parma cathedral depicts the Assumption of the Virgin (1526). Gigantic painted figures of the apostles stand below an explosion of heavenly clouds and hundreds of angels that create a celestial architecture upon which the Virgin Mary is assumed into heaven. The dramatic energy of the painting is a clear harbinger of the great Baroque paintings of the following century.
Parma's National Gallery of Painting houses one of Italy's most important collections of medieval and Renaissance paintings. Amongst its treasures are several altarpieces by the great Correggio. This episode examines these extraordinary paintings and their expressive emotional power, which has inspired some to describe Correggio's work as "proto-Baroque."
After decorating the apartment of a Benedictine abbess, Correggio was called by the nearby Benedictine monks of Parma to decorate their church of San Giovanni Evangelista. The most spectacular of the paintings is the illusionist dome fresco depicting Jesus and the Apostles in dramatic di sotto in sù perspective.
The Camera di San Paolo (1519) was Correggio's first major commission in Parma. In the private quarters of a Benedictine abbess named Giovanna Piacenza, he executed a decorative fresco program filled with mythological and festive motifs. The particularly beautiful illusionistic ceiling decoration was a sort of a warm-up for the stunning domes he would paint in the following years.
