The Blooming Court Ch. 9We start with the group after their encounter with Shankise and his grim warning. The group meets to decide how to move forward, and Zechs suggests rushing through to widen the gap between the party and their overseers. The idea being that if they can widen the gap, it would give them time to reach Glad's boon and go the long way around the treants to avoid it without raising too much suspicion. It's not an impossible idea, though it wouldn't be easy by any means, as the group will be running at full speed with Zechs leading the way and the group following closely in tow. While it happened as planned, we encountered minor difficulties that could have become major hurdles without the group's teamwork.Upon finishing their trek, they find a camp and ask Hoshino to provide a haven for the night so they can rest in peace, given the environment and their previous encounters. It's not quite as lavish as their last stay in the Magnificent Mansion, but it's far better than the alternative, and for that, they're grateful. After some food, conversation, and rest, we see Glad in a dream where she is shown the location of The Daughter of the Vine. The morning comes, and with a full night of stressless sleep, the party feels a wave of exhaustion lifted for them. With everyone but Shanks downstairs for breakfast, Zechs takes it upon himself to check in on him. To no one's surprise, he's been burning the midnight oil and has been tinkering with some of the tools in his kit. First showing Zechs the dismantled "bombs away" and telling Duo he's made him a frag grenade he can take into combat in the future. This gets Zechs' wheels turning, and he informs Shanks that he'll work with him and Salix on some new toys moving forward. After a brief discussion on death, morality, and the judgment of the many for the sins of some, they move forward with the plan to have Shanks scout. While the next leg of the journey isn't a sprint, as it was the previous day, it is still quite the trek, and the land is showing its feywild nature with every step. There are some combined efforts of stealth and utilizing everyone's kits to help them traverse the terrain, and it shows just how far the group has come, not only individually but as a team as well. All this gets them through the treants' area and to the supposed location of the temple. Eventually coming up to a lake with water that almost looks like glass, still and serene. The group takes the time to rest and gather themselves. There's so much happening, and that's where we pick up…Find out what happens next in this episode of the Medusa's Cascade: Collateral Damage!Theme Music is written and performed by EfflorescenceMixed by Thomas Lapierre IIITitle Card by Pierce Graphics Check out the show at themedusascascade.com Hosted on Acast. Sometimes the work done by law students can surprise everyone. This episode may shock you. Continuing a tradition, we honor the annual winner of the John F. Burton Jr. College of Workers' Compensation Lawyers Law Student Writing competition. This year, guest Roxanne Mosley is the winner with her findings in “The Uncompensated Risk: Federal Workers' Compensation and the Human Toll of the Weaponized Shutdown.” Mosley examined the nexus of government shutdowns and the impact on federal employees protected under FECA, the Federal Employees' Compensation Act. Government shutdowns aren't just political showdowns, they have the potential to harm real people: federal workers protected under federal Workers' Comp programs. Mosley witnessed the human toll of a federal shutdown, including missed mortgage payments and simply making the ends meet at the end of the month. But she also found the unexpected toll inflicted on those federal workers, the potential Workers' Comp shortfalls. During a government shutdown, federal employees deemed essential may be asked to keep working without concurrent compensation, which can be marked as a “zero” on a worker's pay stub. This is critical if a worker is injured on the job, as benefits are determined by past payment records. A period without pay can be included in that compensation calculation, resulting in reduced benefits. Mosley is calling for federal protections and Congressional action.  If you have thoughts on Workers' Comp law or an idea for a topic or guest you'd like to hear, contact us at JPierce@ppnlaw.com or APierce@ppnlaw.com. We don't talk enough about the real collateral damage of broken systems. And it's not just survivors. It's our kids.In this episode, I'm naming something that so many of you are living through but rarely see acknowledged out loud — the ways children are impacted when systems like family court, child protection, and even therapeutic settings fail to fully understand coercive control and domestic violence.Because this isn't just about what happened in the relationship. It's about what continues to happen after separation… when you're doing everything “right,” and your child is still paying the price. We're talking about the full spectrum of collateral damage — from the quieter, everyday barriers (like not being able to access therapy due to joint decision-making) to the more extreme and devastating outcomes that can occur when abuse is minimized, misunderstood, or ignored. This episode is honest. It's heavy. And it also holds space for hope — because that matters too.In this episode, we cover:How coercive control and post-separation abuse continue to impact kidsWhy joint decision-making can block access to critical careHow children learn to stay silent in medical, legal, and therapeutic settingsThe impact of misinformed professionals (including in therapy and court)How fear, threats, and “provoke and record” dynamics affect childrenThe misuse of terms like “parental alienation” and its consequencesWhat happens when abuse (including sexual abuse) is not believed or substantiatedThe emotional and psychological toll on protective parents and childrenPeer-Reviewed Articleshttps://www.law.georgetown.edu/georgetown-law-journal/wp-content/uploads/sites/26/2022/06/Meier_Denial-of-Family-Violence-in-Court.pdfhttps://scholarship.law.gwu.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=2809&context=faculty_publicationshttps://scholarship.law.gwu.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1857&context=faculty_publicationshttps://barrygoldstein.net/component/tags/tag/the-saunders-studyJoin the Rising Beyond Community today. The Blooming Court Ch. 8We pick back up as Shanks informs Zechs who their unexpected company is. Zechs, reluctant, proceeds to tell Galahad the news. Zechs then proceeds to group the party and, in hushed tones, make the situation known to them. Turk and Hoshino get a very abbreviated version of why everyone's suddenly so tense. Plans are made and instructions given as they continue to move with business as usual. To make matters worse, someone who might be Shanks' alternate or an impersonator is messing with the group. First with Hoshino, then with Zechs, who confirms it's his alternate Shankise. Shankise manages to ruffle the feathers and get under the skin of Turk, crossing a line that comes with anger and threats. They press on, under the added stress on their minds, and eventually make camp. Duo takes first watch with Zechs, who gives him the rundown on the situation. On the second watch, Salix & Turk discuss their past and speak to their patrons, current and former. The final watch consists of Galahad and Hoshino discussing the alternates, Hoshino's conversation he's yet to bring up to the group, and some of what Hoshino missed while the party helped Arguile.Zechs gets a wake-up call from Shanks, who tells him, "The Loxodon is casting some shit." As information is relayed back and forth and the group starts waking up, Shanks realizes his hunter's mark spell has dropped. With that, Shanks was snuck up on by his alternate, who told him to bring him to the party for a chat. Shanks relays this to Zechs, who then relays it to Galahad and Hoshino, telling them this is supposedly just a conversation, and they'll know if it goes south if he says BARRAGE. Shankise, having been charmed by Shanks, approaches the group and states plainly that they should stop what they're doing. To which they have some distrust, but find no reason for him to lie. He informs them that they don't know what chain of events their actions will set in motion, and that they should consider the factors at play. Some more exchange is had, and "pleasantries" are given before, in a veil of shadows, Shankise disappears. There's so much happening, and that's where we pick up…Find out what happens next in this episode of the Medusa's Cascade: Collateral DamageTheme Music is written and performed by EfflorescenceMixed by Thomas Lapierre IIITitle Card by Pierce Graphics Check out the show at themedusascascade.com Hosted on Acast. The Blooming Court Ch. 7Upon the group's decision and departure, a rough semblance of a plan begins to form. Utilizing the knowledge that Shanks possesses of the Songbloom in combination with Zechs' ranger abilities to find its location. Throughout their detour to obtain Glad's boon, Galahad expresses his frustration with their situation and his disdain for the area. Eventually, the group breaks for the evening, and we see Turk getting another lesson in Thieves' Cant and informing Shanks that he has quite the singing voice. Hoshino joins the two, and Turk informs Hoshino about how he got his nickname, Big T, and Hoshino regales them with a named tale of Arguile and Shanks fighting the Gathakanathi warriors. On this watch, Shanks gets the feeling, which is later confirmed, that they're being watched. The second watch is Arguile and Hoshino, in which Hoshino learns about what transpired after his departure, particularly with his family and Arioch. Hoshino apologizes for not being there for him, but Arguile stops him and lets him know there's nothing to forgive. Quickly changing the subject, Arguile asks his opinion on his fellow bard and who would be the better of the two. Hoshino deflects with a humble answer, and Arguile laughs. They go get Galahad and Zechs for the final watch. The conversation is light with Zechs poking fun at Galahad's frustrations. Eventually, they wake the others and make preparations for the day, organizing spells and getting their daily goodberry. Duo confirms that their destination is about 2 days away. Shanks and Zechs continue to get the sense that they're being watched. With that, Shanks decides to go into stealth mode to see if he can get eyes on their pursuers. The Blooming Court Ch. 6During the final watch of the party's long rest, Glad and Zechs share a quiet conversation about faith, the gods, and the found-family bond that holds their group together, until they are interrupted by a mysterious figure calling itself the Briar Envoy. The Envoy chastises them for failing to present themselves properly before the Queen and Court or offering an acceptable tribute. At Zechs's warning through the Spies Murmur, the others wake and join the tense exchange, which ends only when the Envoy vanishes after giving them a single day to appear before the Court with a more fitting offering. Not long after, a weary and familiar presence emerges: Hoshino, returned from his mission with The Journeyman and visibly drained. Zechs, too exhausted to question the timing, embraces him outright, and the rest of the group welcomes him with a mix of warmth and caution. Hoshino provides only brief details about his journey as the party updates him on their aliases for Uscana and their recent crash landing. With some quick planning, illusions, and camp breakdown, they set off toward their unavoidable detour. At the Court, they're informed that they must board a lift to get where they need to go, in two separate trips, and Zechs, speaking Sylvan, takes the lead in coordinating. Brought before Queen Senestra, he and the group offer apologies and ask what tribute would satisfy her. She provides two equally grim options: retrieve a once-in-a-century Songbloom from the treants' territory, or recover the mask of her former consort. After weighing both dangerous paths, the group chooses the option less likely to spark immediate war and sets off in search of the elusive Songbloom. The Blooming Court Ch. 5The group, minus Arguile and Galahad, is recovering from the crash and taking stock of what they lost and what they can recover. Before Duo heads out with Shanks to scout, Zechs urges Duo to be vigilant, as the last time they were in the feywild, he nearly lost Duo to the Feywild, and Duo assures him that he'll be careful. With that, Shanks and Duo conduct a quick scout of the area and confirm that the forest is dense and that the denizens are abundant. With a quick ping of Zechs' primeval awareness, he confirms the overwhelming amount of fey in the area. Given the recon, they discuss ways to keep themselves safe if the need arises, using their kits, such as protection from Evil and Good or Galahad's aura. Glad takes a moment to make an offer to the land, asking for safe passage. With that, the group sets off and encounters a pixie with a taste for booze. The more Glad engages with them, the more apparent Zechs' disapproval becomes. While Glad gets herself into a sticky situation with the fey, she's able to relieve herself of the pixie after giving it some booze from the minibar, guiding it into a fey trap. To which Zechs further stresses that the group does their best to follow his lead and instructions, as he is the only one of the group who has actually lived in the Feywild, which gets some jokes about him being no fun, but the group obliges.Zechs eventually finds the group a good spot to camp for the evening, and they break into watches, with Arguile and Shanks taking first watch, joined by Duo. They discuss how Duo wants to do more than sit on the sidelines and scout, and the rogues encourage him to tell his dad how he feels. They also tell him that they'll back him up and help teach him things if that makes things easier, which he's grateful for. The second watch is Turk and Galahad, where Turk reveals why the crash left him so shaken and reveals more about his time before meeting the group. After which, they discuss Paladin oaths, and Galahad speaks about his training with Antonius, the markings on his arm symbolizing each year committed to each oath, and eventually running into the party. He assures Turk that the group will be there to aid him if he ever asks, whether for training or to take down Kaz, to which Turk is grateful. Arguile suggests that, since it would take quite a long time by land or sea, and even by airship, the group uses the Strauss company jet piloted by Baf, who retires after this final ride. The group has many questions about how the aircraft works and emergency plans in the event the plane goes down. Arguile does his best to quell nerves, even pointing out that he doesn't like flying but feels safe in there. The group discusses how to approach their destination as the Feywild partially inhabits Uscana, and several, but not limited to, the Blooming Court has control. Zechs tells the party what he can of his time in the Feywild, and cosigns Glad's warnings of using real names and their traps because, as we know, the Fey are assholes.Their journey isn't all smooth sailing: the group is under attack by flying fey creatures, Shanks is momentarily blinded, and their pilot doesn't make it. The group gets ready for a fight while Glad and Turk do their best to land the jet safely. Galahad takes flight and makes quick work of the main assailant as the group does their best against fey magic and now descending jet. In this episode I discuss how Christians need to think critically about collateral damage in war. Inspired by the recent outbreak of war in Iran, in which many believers flippantly dismiss the deaths of innocent noncombatants, including little girls, there is no Biblical, ethical, or theological justification for collateral damage. I explain how my views on this issue developed over time and how Christians must embrace the post-national identity of Abraham's family and the obvious consequences of Genesis 1:26-28 in which all humans are created in God's image and likeness. Being born on the wrong side of an imaginary line doesn't change that reality. I talk about the problems of just war theory with respect to modern warfare, the hypocrisy of Americans who will justify the death of foreign women and children while claiming we must always defend American women and children, the problem of war in the Old Testament, and how Christians must be morally and intellectually consistent, always defending the rights and value of all human life. In short, there is no Christian justification for collateral damage.  Media Referenced:Calhoun on the Just War Theory: https://libertarianchristians.com/episode/critique-of-the-just-war-theory-laurie-calhoun/ Ballard on Old Testament Violence: https://libertarianchristians.com/episode/ep-193-the-problem-of-old-testament-violence-with-jordan-ballard/ Genesis 3: https://libertarianchristians.com/episode/ep-232-genesis-35-and-the-problem-of-power/ The Protestant Libertarian Podcast is a project of the Libertarian Christian Institute and a part of the Christians For Liberty Network. The Blooming Court Ch. 3We find Galahad at an establishment called The Old Pickaxe, where he meets the owner, Ron, and they bond over Dwarven whisky and rare steak. Galahad is given some behind-the-scenes information about the city and how things truly operate, and is even asked whether he and the party would be up for another job to overthrow a corrupt figurehead, given their resume, but has to mull it over, given their tight schedule at the moment. The party sans the tea crew meets up with Galahad to discuss how things were after he left, explain the peculiar game they played and the smell, and think about whether there is even enough time for a new quest, given their ever-growing to-do list. Later on in the week, while the group makes their preparations for Uscana, Zechs goes out to find information about his bow, Jack of All Trades. Zechs meets a man named Hollis Breckthane, the owner of the Hollow String shop, who informs him that his bow is made of a special and extremely rare metal called ghost silver. He had come across it once before at the Silver Static Drift in the Astral Sea, a place where gods go to die, and he acquired it from a dead god's tooth to make arrows that were confiscated. Zechs gets an in-depth lesson on how his bow truly works and is appreciative of the insight, realizing he has a long way to go but a clear path to fully grasping the bow's capabilities. He buys an elven saber for Argo and heads out. At the same time, Galahad picks up his newly reforged sword, Kanna's Blazing Fury, and purchases the thunderstrike mace as he's grown attached to the weapon. He's informed that the rest of the crew's orders will be ready later that week, and thanks him for the time and excellent work, getting to see just how the newly forged blade works and feels. He's impressed and excited to test out this improved beast of a weapon. There's so much happening, and that's where we pick up…Find out what happens next in this episode of the Medusa's Cascade: Collateral Damage! Turk's magic seems to have left him, as a plume of black smoke leaves him, and Zechs has a white handprint that has appeared on his own hand where Tumra touched him. Turk appears visibly angry with his former patron, and Galahad tries to assess the group. Shanks is brought back from the brink of death, and he awakes, feigning memory loss, to cut the visible tension. Zechs heals Arguile and directs Arguile towards his brother and mother. The family reunites and comforts each other through their grief, then reconvenes with the party before heading back into the city. The party looks over the area to see if there's anything worth grabbing before heading out and finds several things, including armor that they're unsure is cursed, so Turk holds off on putting it on until they can find something better suited for him. The party decides to head to their lodgings rather than Dorna's home, at least until they can be sure it's safe for them to return. Crime Writers On...True Crime Review

From no-knock warrants and phony police informants to civil forfeiture and international narcotics interdiction, the US war on drugs has affected more than just traffickers. Its highly provocative methods have caused the deaths of innocent bystanders, often with no consequences for those responsible.  Animated by decades of political cries stoking fear and anger, police departments have gained more power in their tactics, which look more like combat than law enforcement. And the deaths of people caught in the crossfire are now accepted as necessary sacrifices in the quest for a drug-free America. In each episode of the podcast “Collateral Damage” from The Intercept, investigative reporter Radley Balko covers an unjust or avoidable death as a result of the government's questionable enforcement policies and practices. The series distills the war on drugs down to the personal stories of bystanders who lost their lives or livelihood as collateral damage to the dangerous and quixotic goal of saving a nation from itself.OUR SPOILER-FREE REVIEWS OF "COLLATERAL DAMAGE" BEGIN IN THE FINAL 10 MINUTES OF THE EPISODE. More To The Story: Over the last few weeks, Minneapolis has looked like a city under siege. The Trump administration has sent roughly 3,000 federal agents to Minnesota in what Todd Lyons, acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, has called the “largest immigration operation ever.” This all comes as protests have spread around Minneapolis and across the country demanding that ICE leave Minnesota and other states following the death of Renée Good, a 37-year-old Minneapolis resident and US citizen who was killed by an ICE officer as she observed federal agents. ICE and other immigration agents are operating in ways we've never seen before in this country. But their tactics and weapons are not entirely new. Investigative journalist Radley Balko is the author of Rise of the Warrior Cop and host of Collateral Damage, a podcast about America's war on drugs. We're excited to share another episode of The Intercept's new podcast Collateral Damage. The investigative series examines the half-century-long war on drugs, its enduring ripple effects, and the devastating consequences of building a massive war machine aimed at the public itself. Hosted by Radley Balko, an investigative journalist who has been covering the drug war and the criminal justice system for more than 20 years, each episode takes an in-depth look at someone who was unjustly killed in the drug war. Veronica and Charity Bowers, a young Christian missionary and her daughter, are killed when the Peruvian Air Force shoots down a small passenger plane in 2001. The plane had been mistaken for a drug smuggling plane and was shot down as part of a joint anti-drug agreement between the CIA and the Colombian and Peruvian governments.President Donald Trump has made the Bowers's deaths newly and urgently relevant since he began ordering the U.S. military to strike down alleged drug smuggling boats in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific Ocean in September 2025. By early November, the U.S. had launched a total of 17 strikes, killing at least 70 people, and those figures seem to grow almost by the day. The attacks are illegal under both U.S. and international law. The administration also provided no documentation of the alleged drug trafficking. The attack on the Bowers family pierced the veil that obscures drug war foreign policy because of their nationality, skin color, and relatability. More than 20 years ago, House Oversight Committee hearing members Jan Schakowsky and Elijah Cummings demanded accountability after U.S. drug interdiction forces killed the Bowers. They demanded to know how such a mistake could happen, and how we could prevent the loss of innocent life going forward.“The kind of action we saw in Peru … amounts to an extrajudicial killing,” said Schakowsky at the time. Cummings added, “The Peruvian shootdown policy would never be permitted as a domestic United States policy precisely because it goes against one of our most sacred, due process principles — namely, that all persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty.”Now, a new administration openly celebrates summary execution of alleged drug smugglers without a hint of due process, and is now threatening to topple another government to prevent the U.S. from sating its appetite for illicit drugs. The story of Veronica and Charity Bowers is a stark reminder of how aggressive drug policy is wasteful and futile, how we never seem to learn from past failures, and how the generations-long effort to stop people from getting high also — and necessarily — treats human lives as expendable.Subscribe and listen to the full series on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you listen. The United States has executed 21 people over the last month in targeted drone strikes off the coast of Venezuela. The Trump administration has so far authorized at least four strikes against people it claims are suspected “narco-terrorists.”The strikes mark a dark shift in the administration's approach to what it's framing as an international drug war — one it's waging without congressional oversight.“There actually could be more strikes,” says Intercept senior reporter Nick Turse. This week on The Intercept Briefing, Turse joins host Akela Lacy and investigative journalist Radley Balko to discuss how the administration is laying the groundwork to justify extrajudicial killings abroad and possibly at home. The Trump administration's claims that it's going after high-level drug kingpins don't hold water, Turse says. “Trump is killing civilians because he 'suspects' that they're smuggling drugs. Experts that I talk to say this is illegal. Former government lawyers, experts on the laws of war, they say it's outright murder.” Trump has repeated claims, without evidence, that a combination of immigration and drug trafficking is driving crime in the United States. It's part of a story Trump has crafted: The U.S. and the international community are under siege, and it's his job to stop it — whether by executing fishermen or deploying the National Guard on his own people. And while the latest turn toward extrajudicial killings is cause for alarm, it's also more of the same, says Radley Balko, an investigative journalist who has covered the drug war for two decades and host of the new Intercept podcast, Collateral Damage. “The notion of collateral damage is just that: this very idea that, when you're in war, there are some who can be sacrificed because we have this greater cause that we have to win or this threat we have to overcome. And these people that are being killed in these incidents, they're collateral damage from the perspective of the U.S. government because Trump clearly doesn't care,” Balko says.“There are a lot of parallels between what Trump is doing with immigration now and what we saw during the 1980s with the drug war. There was an effort to bring the military in,” Balko says. “This idea that Reagan declared illicit drugs a national security threat — just like Trump has done with immigration, with migrants — this idea that we're facing this threat that is so existential and so dangerous that we have to take these extraconstitutional measures, this is a playbook that we've seen before.”Listen to the full conversation of The Intercept Briefing on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you listen. We're excited to share a new podcast from The Intercept called Collateral Damage. This is Episode One: Dirty Business. In 2006, a 92-year-old Atlanta woman was gunned down in her own home by police during a drug raid. The police initially claimed the woman was a marijuana dealer who fired a gun at them. The story might have ended there. But an informant bravely came forward to set the record straight. Subsequent investigations and reports revealed that the police had raided the wrong home, killed an innocent woman, then planted marijuana in her basement to cover up their mistake. In the ensuing months, we'd learn that the Atlanta Police Department's narcotics unit routinely conducted mistaken raids on terrified people. The problem was driven by perverse federal, state, and local financial incentives that pushed cops to take shortcuts in procuring warrants for drug raids in order to boost their arrest and seizure statistics. Most of those incentives are still in place today. The raids haven't stopped. And neither have the deaths.Subscribe and listen to the full series on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you listen.
