The Cinetopia Film Festival hits Ann Arbor later this month, and the director of one of the movies stopped by the WEMU studio. Andrew Templeton is the director of "1969: Killers, Freaks and Radicals." That movie has a focus on the Michigan murders of John Norman Collins right here in Washtenaw County, He spoke about the film with WEMU's David Fair. Plus, David talked about the latest films and special screenings with Marquee Arts cinema programming director, Nick Alderink.
In 1969, Jane Mixer was attending the University of Michigan Law School when she was found dead just miles from her dorm. She had been shot twice in the head and strangled. Jane was the third of seven young women to be found dead in the area within two years. Investigators believed John Norman Collins was the serial killer responsible for several of the murders but couldn't prove he killed Jane. The case went cold until 2001 when the investigation was re-opened by testing DNA evidence collected more than 30-years earlier. “48 Hours" Correspondent Maureen Maher reports. Why is it so hard to correct myth? In spite of facts, crimes can be committed and no one will be charged or held accountable. In the case of Dawn Basom, who was murdered over 50 years ago, her case has never been solved. No one has ever been arrested and no one has ever been sent to jail. However, if you goggle her name, you would quickly see that she is considered to be one of victims of the 1960's coed- murder, John Norman Collins. Do we really know that? Is that true or do we just think that because she has always been listed as one of his murder victims. That is the question TCI is asking. We ask that and why is it so hard to correct myth??The following links are available: 2 Avg. Joes S02 E14 – Michigan Murders: 5th Victim Dawn Basom 1969 – “Off the Rails” 2 Avg. John Norman Collins was an all-American boy. He was handsome, lived in Ann Arbor, and belonged to a fraternity. But there was a dark side to this young man. The media and others dubbed John Norman Collins "The Michigan Murderer." In the late 1960s, Collins stalked college-age women like prey. His hunting grounds were near the campuses of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Michigan. The Michigan murderer terrorized the public. The media breathlessly reported the latest rape murders of women near two prestigious Michigan college campuses. John Norman Collins is a suspect connected to seven young women's vicious and heinous murders. John Norman Collins eventually found his way into a Washtenaw County, Michigan courtroom. A state prosecutor charged Collins with the first-degree premeditated murder of 18-year-old Karen Sue Beineman, a student at Eastern Michigan University. A jury convicted Collins. The judge sentenced him to a mandatory life sentence. Author Gregory Fournier was upset because the prosecutor never prosecuted six other rape-murder cases. The Prosecuting Attorney decided not to bring other cases. He was holding off in other murder cases as an "insurance policy" in the event John Norman Collins was successful on appeal. Collins lost all of his appeals as the courts upheld his conviction. Presumably, because Collins faced the rest of his life in prison, the Prosecuting Attorney decided not to spend public resources holding Collins responsible for other alleged murders. Some claim the police investigators had DNA evidence waiting in the other rape-murder cases. Fournier shares his extensive findings of these murders in our interview. The book "Terror in Ypsilanti: John Norman Collins Unmasked" is available at bookstores. Fournier, a Detroit native, is one of America's premier true crime authors. He has written several other books, including about Detroit's Purple Gang. ----------- Obtain a copy of the book "Terror in Ypsilanti: John Norman Collins Unmasked" by visiting your local bookstore or Amazon Books. Before Ted Bundy, there was John Norman Collins. The OG co-ed killer terrorized women in the Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti Michigan area for 2 years and left several mutilated victims in his wake. Tune in as Aimee tells Aly all about the original co ed killer John Norman Collins on this week's Horrific Heartland.
Between the summers of 1967 through 1969, before the term serial killer was coined, a predatory killer stalked the campuses of Eastern Michigan University and the University of Michigan seeking prey until he made the arrogant mistake of killing his last victim in the basement of his uncle's home. All-American boy John Norman Collins was arrested, tried, and convicted of the strangulation murder of Karen Sue Beineman. The other murders attributed to Collins never went to trial, with one exception, and soon became cold cases. With the benefit of fifty years of hindsight, hundreds of vintage newspaper articles, thousands of police reports, and countless interviews, Terror in Ypsilanti: John Norman Collins Unmasked tells the stories of the other victims, recreates the infamous trial that took Collins off the streets, and details Collins' time spent in prison. Terror in Ypsilanti compiles an array of physical and circumstantial evidence drawing an unmistakable portrait of the sadistic murderer who slaughtered these innocent young women. TERROR IN YPSILANTI: John Norman Collins Unmasked-Gregory A. Fournier

In the late 1960s, a serial killer terrorized the city of Ypsilanti, Michigan. Once John Norman Collins lured young women into his car or onto the back of his motorcycle, they would never be seen alive again. My guest, Gregory A. Fournier, has a personal connection to this case. Collins tried to abduct his girlfriend, right in front of him, over fifty years ago. He shares the tragic stories of the seven women brutally murdered by Collins, and how the killer was finally caught. His book is called "Terror In Ypsilanti: John Norman Collins Unmasked", and his website is gregoryafournier.com . It's all about Michigan this week when Mc'Kieli and Kennedy talk about famous murders that happened in their favorite state. Mc'Kieli tells the story of one of Michigan's most infamous serial killers. He's Michigan Co-Ed Killer, the Ted Bundy before Ted Bundy, and the Ypsilanti Ripper, it's John Norman Collins. Kennedy shares the stories of the Goodhart Murders and Robert Lee Haggart.
Many cases that are officially listed as unsolved still have a suspect that is assumed to be responsible, but for one reason or another cannot or will not be prosecuted. Jane Mixer was long assumed to be a victim of serial killer John Norman Collins – the infamous Michigan Murderer of the late 1960's. In 2004, her family received the shocking news that there had been a DNA hit on evidence from Jane's case. But the match was not to John Norman Collins. Warning – this book has graphic sections and may not be suitable for all readers. The podcast does not mention the more difficult parts of the narrative.
In part 2 of this series, Courtney and Jaclyn cover the deaths of Karen Beineman and Roxie Ann Phillips. They will discuss the controversial police investigation and eventual arrest of John Norman Collins. Was this the serial killer responsible for the infamous Michigan Murders that terrorized two cities for 3 years? This week, our psychological profile is on the confessions of John Norman Collins, the killer responsible for the “Michigan Murders”. Collins had murdered several young women and girls between 1967 and 1969. The victims were all kidnapped, beaten, raped and assaulted before being murdered and mutilated. He was sent to prison for one murder, but is believed to be responsible for a further six murders. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
After August 1970, the name John Norman Collins more or less disappears from the headlines and news reports. It's the end of an era. With Collins behind bars for life, the city can breathe again. But still, something just isn't quite right. One man was convicted of a horrific act and is rightfully paying the price, yes. But seven families are still left wondering, mourning, and searching for answers. Hosted by Arica Frisbey Written by Ronia-Isabel Cabansag Produced by Rylee Barnsdale

The bodies of four men were found at separate times in a similar area of the Rocky Mountains in the US. Although they didn’t know each other, the men’s deaths were related, because they were all searching for the same thing ...

On August 19, 1970, John Norman Collins was convicted of the murder of 21-year-old Karen Sue Beineman.
After successfully murdering four women in Eastern Michigan without a whiff of suspicion in 1969, John Norman Collins began to believe he would never be caught. By 1967, he seemed to be a well-adjusted college student in Ann Arbor, Michigan. But the real reason for John Norman Collins' confidence lay far from the local college campus. Rather, in an abandoned farmhouse deep in the woods, where he could visit his victims again and again, admiring his handiwork. Sponsors! John Norman Collins faces his accusers in court. But is the evidence convincing enough? How many victims did he allegedly kill? Or was there another murderer working the Michigan area at this time?
In this first of a two part series, we take a look at the murders that terrified the communities of Ypsilanti and Ann Arbor during the late 60's. You can't judge a book by its cover...and you can't let the "All-American" boy with his charming looks give you a sense of safety and security.
Please listen to episode 48, part one first. In 1969 John Norman Collins was arrested and charged with the murder of 18 year old co-ed Karen Sue Beineman. California governor and future US president Ronald Reagan wanted Collins extradited from Michigan to California to stand trial for the murder of a 17 year old girl in his state.
