Today, we're pulling one from the archives: Reaching the Next Generation, Part 1. Each of us plays a unique role in the lives of the next generation. Brothers and sisters connect and understand. Fathers and mothers teach, guide, and help prepare them for what's ahead. Grandfathers and grandmothers bring affirmation, encouragement, and perspective. Every role matters as we invest in those coming behind us.
What happens after revival fades? How do you rebuild faith in a place where generations know about God, but fewer truly follow Him? In Part 2 of this special interview series on Youth Worker On Fire, Doug Edwards continues his conversation with Lance Kramer, missionary, and ministry leader serving near the Arctic Circle in Kotzebue, Alaska. After exploring the spiritual history of Alaska in Part 1, this conversation shifts to something even more personal: Lance's own journey of faith. From surviving a near-fatal hunting accident… to discovering Christ… to planting churches, discipling students, launching youth camps, and building sustainable ministry models in one of the most remote places in North America—this episode is packed with practical wisdom for anyone reaching the next generation.

Send us Fan MailHow do we reach the Next Generation in youth ministry? Gen Z can spot a fake a mile away, but they respond fast to something rarer: an adult who is fully present. In this episode, we have collaborated with Josh Williams from Beyond the Numbers podcast to talk about what healthy youth ministry looks like when the goal is real discipleship, not just a full room.We dig into the myths that keep churches stuck, what great volunteers look like and then we get concrete about vision, strategy, and program. Adding events can feel productive, but program for program's sake does not fix a discipleship problem. We talk about creating a culture that “drips” the mission into everything, building space for deeper worship experiences, and helping students grow in a relationship with Jesus that outlasts youth group. If you lead a student ministry, coach volunteers, or care about the future of the church, this conversation will give you practical next steps you can use this week. In this compelling episode of the 95 Podcast, Dale Sellers sits down with Amy Anderson of The Unstuck Group to discuss critical topics facing church leaders today. Fresh from leading The Unstuck Group through the unexpected loss of founder Tony Morgan, Amy shares profound insights on succession planning, navigating grief while leading, and the importance of knowing when to pass the torch. The conversation explores the church life cycle, metrics that matter for sustained health, and the exciting resurgence of spiritually hungry young adults returning to church. Amy offers practical wisdom on how pastors can focus on what only they can do, build leadership benches, and position their churches to reach the next generation effectively.Show Notes: https://95network.org/95podcast-322-summary-succession-planning-church-health-leading-through-transition-reaching-the-next-generation-w-amy-anderson-episode-322/Key Points In BriefAmy's Journey: 35 years of marriage, three grown kids, six grandchildren on the way; started in corporate (3M, Amation), transitioned to church ministry for 12-13 years, now 11 years with The Unstuck Group working with 250+ churchesCore vs. Defend vs. Discuss Beliefs: Churches share common core beliefs worth dying for; defend beliefs (like women in leadership, Calvinism vs. Arminianism) we'll defend but shouldn't let divide; discuss beliefs (age of earth) are open conversationsLeading Through Loss: After Tony Morgan's sudden death in fall 2024, Amy led The Unstuck Group through grief while experiencing their biggest year of service; team-based leadership and lack of weekly "52 events" helped manage the weightSuccession Planning Essentials: Best time to plan is during the high point, not the decline; requires 2-3 year transition across three lanes—teaching/preaching, board leadership, and staff leadership; pastors often stay too longChurch Life Cycle Reality: Every church goes through a life cycle; the key is recognizing where you are and reinventing at sustained health to avoid decline; metrics tell the story before attendance and finances show problemsMaintenance Phase Warning: When you're more worried about keeping people happy than moving mission forward, you're in maintenance; false happiness comes from good attendance/finances while momentum is actually slippingLead Indicators to Watch: Percentage of people serving, new people in database, kids check-ins, and baptisms—these decline before overall attendance, giving early warning signsFuture Pastor Shortage: Over 100,000 pastors expected to transition in next 10 years; seminaries aren't producing enough replacements; churches must build leadership benches and create residency programs to raise up future leadersWhat Lead Pastors Must Do: Cast vision, be spiritual leader/teacher, champion where church is going—but don't have to do everything; surround with team that complements weaknessesTwo Essential Strategies: (1) Effective weekend service reaching new people—the primary entry point; (2) Clear discipleship pathway with simple steps: serving (spiritual gifts), community (finding 3 friends), generosityExciting Trend: Spiritual temperature is rising; Gen Z and 28-40 year olds (with and without kids) are finding their way to church, spiritually hungry—not returners but new seekers trying out faithHope for the Future: While some churches will close (the "clubs" not on mission), there's a strong army of mission-focused churches making tough decisions, refining strategies, and Support the show

Today we continue our Family of God series with a special message called “Reaching the Next Generation”. As a church, we believe every generation matters and that passing on our faith is one of our greatest biblical responsibilities. Rather than hearing from one pastor, you'll hear from our Children's Pastor, Youth Pastor, and Young Adults Pastor as they share how God is moving in the lives of children, students, and young adults—and how we, as a spiritual family, can intentionally raise them in the faith. Together, we want to seek God's heart for the next generation and take ownership of the call to disciple those who are coming behind us. In today's episode, Pastor Terry Fant sits down with two incredible young leaders — Josiah Smith and Madalynne Baxter — to talk about the challenges and opportunities of ministering to students in today's world. From overwhelming cultural pressure to the rise of influencers, technology, and comparison, this conversation dives deep into what the next generation is really facing and how the church can answer the call. If you're a parent, a leader, or someone who cares about the future of the church, this episode will encourage you, challenge you, and give you hope.
In this message, Pastor Saul unpacks what it means to move from good to greater to God's greatest for your life. Using the story of Moses and his parents in Hebrews 11, he shows how God sees the “beauty of potential” in every person—including you—and how He calls us to live by faith, not by fear or convenience. You'll learn why some are given one, two, or five “talents,” and what it really means that “to whom much is given, much is required.” Pastor Saul talks honestly about emotional maturity, being equally yoked, building healthy marriages and homes, and creating a God-honoring environment that insulates (not isolates) our kids from a broken world. This episode will challenge parents, grandparents, singles, and young adults to: See God's potential in themselves and the next generation Create a clean, faith-filled environment at home Guard their hearts from the things that destroy relationships and purpose Learn to recognize God's hand and hear His voice Say “yes” to Jesus and live a life truly “fit for purpose” Stay to the end for a powerful salvation prayer and invitation to surrender your past, present, and future to Jesus.

The church is in a ‘strategic moment' to reach a generation hungry for truth. In this episode, Todd Unzicker sits down with Shane Pruitt, National Next Gen Director for the North American Mission Board, to talk about how God is at work among Gen Z and Gen Alpha. Generations Z and Alpha are often marked by their values of authenticity and transparency, and their cause-driven motivations. Shane Pruitt joins Todd Unzicker to unpack the current traits of these two young generations and the church's opportunity to connect with them in their search for answers. Their general tendency to mistrust and counter cultural narratives opens doors for ministry leaders to share the gospel and disciple them. From embracing your role as a mentor to letting young people serve and lead, Shane shares practical insight for discipling the next generation to declare and demonstrate the gospel.

How do we reach a generation that speaks an entirely different language—one shaped by screens, skepticism, and seismic cultural shifts? For Christian parents, grandparents, and youth leaders, it’s the challenge—and opportunity—of our age. In this compelling “best of” episode, Catherine sits down with renowned Christian apologist Dr. Jonathan Morrow to unlock the secrets of relating to Gen Z and Gen Alpha. As Director of Cultural Engagement and Student Discipleship at Impact 360 Institute, adjunct professor at Biola University, and the author of celebrated apologetics books, Jonathan brings nearly two decades of front-line experience equipping young people for lasting faith in a post-Christian world. Together, Catherine and Jonathan dive deep into five essential insights every adult needs to know about Gen Z: Why Gen Z are true “screenagers”—and how the digital world is dramatically accelerating and intensifying the questions of identity, meaning, and truth. How Gen Z is now thoroughly post-Christian, with only 4% holding a biblical worldview—what that means for sharing faith, and why “business as usual” discipleship just won’t work. The rise of “safe spaces,” intellectual bubble wrap, and the urgent need to introduce challenge and opposing ideas—inside the safety of Christian love and guidance. The paradox of safety: why today’s students crave safe spaces yet feel more unsafe, anxious, and mentally strained than ever before—and how parents can provide real security and hope. The opportunity and challenge of unprecedented diversity—what the Bible says about ethnicity, and how to navigate the subtle pitfalls of secular approaches to justice and inclusion. Throughout the episode, Jonathan shares real-world examples and tested strategies including immersive learning, intentional worldview training, and how to disciple students for life in “Babylon,” not Jerusalem. “There’s a world we want, and there’s the world that is—and they’re not the same world,” Jonathan observes, urging parents: “If we’re not intentionally helping them understand that truth exists and you can know it, they’re going to become Christian relativists.” This episode is a must-listen for anyone who wants to faithfully guide the next generation to lasting faith—while respecting their unique struggles and leveraging their immense potential. Every generation faces its intersection with culture—this is ours. Notable Episode Moments: The hilarious nostalgia of card catalogs and how research has changed forever Practical advice for introducing “bad ideas” in healthy, guided ways—building spiritual and intellectual muscle Why anxiety, depression, and loneliness are skyrocketing, and where young people can find lasting safety A clear-eyed look at diversity: its beautiful biblical roots and how to celebrate differences without embracing every passing trend Are you proactively training your kids for the world as it is—or the world you wish it was? What is one step you can take this week to intentionally disciple your child amid the pressures and possibilities of Gen Z’s reality? Tune in for a conversation packed with actionable hope, fresh perspective, and the tools every Christian parent needs for today’s crazy world. About the Guest:Jonathan Morrow holds master’s degrees in divinity and philosophy of religion and ethics, a doctorate in worldview and culture, and serves as Director of Cultural Engagement at Impact 360 Institute. It's cool to see young people doing that.” —Shane Pruitt “It's hard to be a Christian on my school team. Some girls will make bad decisions, so it's tempting to follow them, but I keep my faith in the Lord. And so, pastors and leaders, encourage your students to leverage what they're already doing to be a light and point people to Jesus.” —Lacey Villasenor “There is a hunger for truth with young people. They want to know the Bible. They want to know doctrine and theology. They want to understand truth. This is not us just saying this for a generation; it's them saying it themselves: ‘Hey, teach us the text. Teach us the word. Teach us how to live this out.'” —Shane Pruitt

The majority of today’s incoming college students are members of Generation Z, or “Zoomers.” What will it take to reach a new generation of young adults with the Gospel message? Dr. Thomas White of Cedarville University will talk with us about why this generation is seeking personal peace and he’ll offer practical ways to help them find it in a relationship with Jesus!
The Church has grown old because we are missing the “dew” in the youth that God has given us to refresh us. We are waiting on them to mature rather than helping them in the maturity process. We shouldn't count them out by waiting until they are older. We can give them a platform right where they are in their maturity and walk with God. We get to be encouragers, affirmers, and investors in them.
We each play a different role in the next generation's life. A brother or sister connects and understands. A father or mother takes on a teaching role and helps to prepare for what is next. A grandfather and grandmother affirms and encourages.

Every generation has the responsibility to pass their faith to the next generation. This requires diligent training and discipleship. Main Points:1. For those of you who are parents, let me ask you to consider something: What are you actively teaching your children? Are you consistently discipling your own children? Do they see a commitment in your life to serving God? 2. I recognize that it doesn't happen by accident. If my children live for Jesus, it will happen because I'm intentional in teaching them by word and example. I do recognize that every child must have their own encounter with Jesus. They will make their own decision about what they believe about God. But as a parent, I'm going to give God every opportunity I can to work in their hearts and lives.3. We cannot let our faith die in our generation, but that is exactly what will happen if we do not accept and commit to the responsibility to raise up another generation of Christ-followers. Today's Scripture Verses:Psalm 78:4 - “We will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, his power, and the wonders he has done.”Psalm 71:17-18 - "O God, You have taught me from my youth; and until now I have proclaimed Your wondrous works. Now also when I am old and gray, O God, do not forsake me, until I have proclaimed Your strength to this generation, and Your power to everyone who is to come.”Psalm 145:4 - “One generation commends your works to another; they tell of your mighty acts.”Quick Links:Subscribe to The 5 Minute Discipleship NewsletterDonate to support this podcastLeave a review on Apple PodcastsGet a copy of The 5 Minute Discipleship JournalConnect on SocialJoin The 5 Minute Discipleship Facebook Group5 Minute Discipleship on Instagram
