Yes, I create self-help videos. And yes, I wrote a self-help book. (Soon to be a major motion picture ... just kidding). So why in the world would I make a blanket statement that all self-improvement offerings suck? Hmmm, perhaps this is just a clever ploy to illustrate something deep and even a wee bit sinister?Inspired by the blog post:Isn't Self-Development A Lot Of Hooey?https://rickhiggins.com/isnt-self-development-a-lot-of-hooeyTl;dr: It's a booming industry out to make money, gurus come in all flavors, good and evil, the reasons you want self-help are pretty dark, it's a jump ball as far as who is responsible for the advice you take, and finally, you're going to need to roll up your sleeves. Yes, this is about tattoos. And cosmetic surgery. And over-the-counter stuff. Only ... not really. This video is about the why's behind it all. And also why you should get out there and start inking up!And for those who like specifics ... it's not about what you do, but why you do it. Or why you haven't done it yet ... whatever 'it' is. Folks of our age are held back by rituals, dogma, and social norms. Tats and chin lifts aren't for everyone, but we all have the right and ability to make those choices for ourselves. Your folks are aging, and you're dealing with how your parents are handling that. When to "put them in a home" kind of thing, perhaps. How to deal with their accelerating health conditions. But there's another side as well ... your relationship with them.Take any two people (or three in this case, assuming you still have both of your parents), and your relationship is going to change as the years start progressing. You're not really their kid anymore, right? And one day soon, you're going to be acting more like their parent. It's a tough time. Your morning bowl of Corn Flakes was originally invented as an "anti-masturbatory morning meal" to reduce the urge to pleasure yourself.Seriously! The bland cereal was actually designed to put people off sex and to discourage them from pleasuring themselves, according to the book from Kate Devlin, Turned On: Science Sex and Robots.Apparently, John Kellogg (he of Kellogg's cereal fame, a physician, and a very devout Seventh-Day Adventist) believed that a plain and healthy diet was the key to curbing masturbation.Mastering The Second Half is an Over-50 Lifestyle Channel which focuses primarily on Relationships and Sexual Health. This is not an "Aha! Here's something you should know" kind of video. It's more of a "What The ... ?" kind of video. I'm simply flabbergasted at something I found and I needed to share it. Gentlemen! I know I know. We don't talk openly about emotions. But we need to for a bit. You'll understand about halfway through this video when you suddenly realize I'm talking about you.Guys who are single, separated, or divorced, have higher rates of mental health issues compared to married men and single women. So says the research, anyway. A recent study showed that unmarried men who were aged 40-60 were 3.5 times more likely to die by suicide when compared to both married men of the same age and unmarried women. Not good, right? In this episode of The Dialogue, I'm joined by Silke Schwarzkopf, Robert Manni, and Nick Lituanio as we discuss a curious example of a matriarchal, "hippy" society that is based on peace, love ... and sex. A society from our nearest neighbors in the evolutionary chain. Can we learn from Bonobos? Silke SchwarzkopfCreator/Host, 2nd Act TVhttps://www.youtube.com/user/Our2ndAct https://2ndact.tv/Robert Manni - Host of Guy's Guy Radio show primetime on KCAA in So Cal, worldwide podcast, and YouTube channel. Today's Topic!Primate societies, and I'm including the human species in this, are largely male-dominated. Conflicts are often settled with violence. Males typically rule with oppression and control. However, there is a primate society that operates quite differently. Bonobos. They have the reputation of living in hippie communes with no aggression and lots of sex. The thing that really sets bonobos apart from the rest of us is the status and dominance of females. It is a matriarchal based society. When conflicts occur, they are typically resolved peacefully, along with genital rubbing and copulation. All sex aside, they do live in a more harmonious world. While aggressive moments do occur, their society frowns on such and they use other techniques to live in harmony. As members of a certain age group, we grew up in a very male dominated society. And while progress has been made, we have a long ways to go to have parity between the sexes when it comes to leading our society. So, two questions to lead this off: (1) Are humans capable of adapting any part of the bonobo culture? And (2), does the mindset and upbringing of our age group help or hurt that possibility? The Rules! No politics, excessive cursing, insults, or bad vibes. You must be semi-polite. No overtalking, interrupting, etc. This is not a Trump-Biden debate. I have a mute button and I'm not afraid to use it. No winners, just ideas. At some point, we're all going to get to that point where we say “How the hell did I get to be this age?”. It's even worse when that number flips to starting with a six. We oftentimes get stuck thinking that everything was so much better and easier back in the day. But it's actually just a mind trick. Really. Let me explain. It's something called 'Rosy Retrospection'. It happens because when we think about our days past, we're more likely to think about people, places, and activities in the abstract. And when we think about things in the abstract, we're far more likely to focus on the positive parts, rather than the unpleasant and sometimes ugly ones.Let's dive deeper, shall we?At some point, we're all going to get to that point where we say “How the hell did I get to be this age?”. How young is too young when you're of a certain age and looking for "Mr/Mrs. Right"? Aren't Age-Gap Relationships supposed to be really, really bad?Whether you're considering an age-gap romance yourself, or just mocking one from afar, we usually have a pretty negative opinion of the union. "What can't he/she just date someone their own age?", we hurl into the void. So, are we jealous? Or are we correct in assuming it's a bad idea?Let's find out ...The Big Question:In my future relationship with another, is it necessary to stay within a certain age boundary? How can/should I deal with that gap, handle society's assumptions/expectations, and will it work out?Script/story available on Medium.com:https://masteringthesecondhalf.medium.com/why-do-people-look-down-on-age-gap-romances-can-they-work-d87d2d7243a7Also available on the website:http://rickhiggins.com/why-do-people-look-down-on-age-gap-romances-can-they-workAt some point, we're all going to get to that point where we say “How the hell did I get to be this age?”. How does one retire without retiring? Meaning, how does one switch from a long-term career into something completely different? Where we may be starting from the bottom of the pile? Why would we do such a thing, and more importantly, how? Nick Lituanio, of the YouTube Channel 'Act Your Age', joins us for the discussion (having done this very thing himself). To dive a little deeper into the subject, restarting life in a new direction usually involves starting over. Learning a new 'thing'. And when you're of a certain age, there is an expectation that you have years of experience and are an expert ... but now you're not. I have a question for you … when was the last time you had sex? The last time you were intimate with your partner. Do you remember the date? The month? How about the year?A sexless relationship can make your heart hurt. Can make you hesitant to even touch your partner. Can make you feel extremely disconnected. It's almost certain that left unaddressed it will end in separation and divorce. Find the underlying causes and feelings. Commit to understanding and resolving the problems. Make it an absolute priority, not just something on your to-do list, but put it right at the top. Together, you are a team. Together, you can solve the other issues in your lives. So the first task is to strengthen your “together”.Let's discuss ...THE BIG QUESTIONIn my relationship with my partner, I want to know why aren't we intimate anymore. How did we get to this point in our marriage/union, and can it be fixed?Story/script available on Medium.com:https://masteringthesecondhalf.medium.com/sexless-marriages-why-they-happen-how-to-fix-them-88ef78f4652cAt some point, we're all going to get to that point where we say “How the hell did I get to be this age?”. In life, you're only one decision away from making a change. Think of a bird in a cage, and one day its human leaves the door open. The bird sits there, staring at freedom, unsure what to do. Unable to make a decision. Do I fly or do I stay? And then the human comes in the room and shuts the door.Decision made.According to science, I'm going to die in about 18.6 years. Which means that technically I've only got 24% of my life left. Now to refute science, all of my aunts, uncles, and grandparents made it into their 90s. So I might still have a third of my life remaining ... you know, before I reincarnate, take a dirt nap, or experience whatever is going to happen. And if you're watching this video, you're probably somewhere in your last third as well. Sorry.I'm not going to lie, watching this channel isn't going to solve all your woes. Each of us is different. But we do share common goals. So come join the community (links below in the description) and let's lift each other up. Because speaking from one 24% remaining and counting person to another .... this is indeed our time. And in an unabashed plug ... sometimes we need help in finding our paths forward. This is where LIFE COACHING can help. If you're interested more, please head over to http://rickhiggins.com/coaching to learn more. (After you finish this video, of course).THE BIG QUESTIONHow can I can I make choices around change that can lead to a better and more fulfilling life?
Before you think I've again fallen into the well of despair, fear not, for I have rediscovered the river of life ... and the water's fine. The agnst side? Well, like most of you I've been in lockdown. Trying to think of things to keep me occupied while sitting inside the same four walls. And yes, trying to remember how to hug people in greeting. Not that I was ever a real touchy-feely person. But still, it's going to be awkward. Will the people in the post-apocalyptic world accept human touch? Or are fist bumps and bowing the new norm? Will Europe just require a single air-kiss instead of two (or even three!)?Part of me was not unhappy with the removal of awkward hugs. But part was. I learned to enjoy physical human contact from semi-acquaintances. And I feel like I'm again going to have to take a remedial class on how to touch others in a non-creepy way. But that too will come, so I had better prepare myself for it. Maybe I'll go hug one of the chickens every evening. Their fighting back should simulate real life well enough. But the thought of post-covid-hugging also brings to light another issue, one in which I'm about 12 months late to the party in addressing. And that's living.I decided that lockdown meant solitary confinement. I switched this YouTube channel from one about cultures and far-flung places to that of fighting the stigma and habits of post-middle-age. I traded actions for ideas. Which has been OK, don't get me wrong, but had I stayed away from the edges I might have found something else. And that is where I'm heading next. Now, about you. What has your lockdown been like? About the same as pre-2020? Have you also just closed the cell door and hidden behind it, accepting an either-or existence? Well my friend, it's time. 2021 is going to be different. How? Well ... I don't know yet. But I have some ideas for both of us.Getting back to an over-active, run with scissors in far away lands lifestyle is still a far away dream. But what if we all found ways to explore new ideas and new things in a new way? Couldn't the excitement of learning a new 'how' be just as interesting as the how itself? There are covid-safe ways of exploring, sharing, teaching, and enjoying. We just need to look for them. I need to look for them. And look I shall. (Watch this space). And I think just as (or even more) importantly, we need to learn to use our new time paradigms to our advantage. Meaning, instead of rush rush rush, chug out another widget ... we take our time with what's directly in front of us. Use the world's braking to our own benefit. Enjoy the thing/moment instead of ticking off another box. Now, as far as resuming hugging ... I've tried but I can't see a way out of it. There are no real alternatives. I'm going to have to touch some of you again. So in advance, I'm sorry for the awkward head bump, but I've forgotten where to put my arms, legs, and whatnot.JOIN our Facebook Group - 50/60+ Mastering The Second Half Of Lifehttps://www.facebook.com/groups/masteringthesecondhalfGive Us A Little Love And Support?http://rickhiggins.com/affiliatesWHOLE LIFE COACHINGhttp://rickhiggins.com/coachingTwitter ⟶ https://twitter.com/2ndHalfMasteryEmail ⟶ rick@rickhiggins.com

Dopamine Fasting is a 'thing' these days. But what is it? And is it even healthy? Not surprisingly, dopamine fasting is itself what it's trying to eliminate. Dopamine is a chemical in all of us that is part of the action/reward cycle. It's necessary for life, and what big companies use to control and steer our actions. Ironically, this fad to eliminate dopamine plays on the very control mechanisms that it professes are evil.Let's take a real look at dopamine, how the action/reward cycle works, and how you can regain control to have a healthier and happier life.At some point, we're all going to get to that point where we say “How the hell did I get to be this age?”. During the 1960s, sex researchers William Masters and Virginia Johnson sat in their Saint Louis laboratory, watching through a one-way glass window, as hundreds of volunteers enjoyed solo or partner sex. Wanna know what the saw?Their observations inspired them to describe a four-phase sexual response process: Excitement, Plateau, Orgasm, and Resolution. Turns out they weren't quite right. They erred in asserting that all men and women experience sex the same way. Subsequent research added a phase at the beginning for women: Desire. The new study stated:Desire. Many women don't experience desire before foreplay begins. They feel erotically neutral. But if they enjoy it, by the time they become highly aroused, they experience desire. For many women, desire is not the cause of sex, but rather, its result.Excitement. Kissing, cuddling, and touching causes the arteries in the genitals to open and allow extra blood into them. This produces erection in men and vaginal lubrication in women. But many, possibly most women don't feel particularly aroused during the Excitement phase. To feel aroused they need more than just increased genital blood flow. Many women insist they must feel desired before they can experience arousal. And once aroused, many want emotional closeness as much as orgasm. Plateau. Masters and Johnson defined it as sustained arousal. The new study concurred.Orgasm. Masters and Johnson described it as a series of brief, sharp spikes of pleasure, a climax. Some of the women in the subsequent agreed, but many described their orgasms as extended, mild, and peak-less, yet still satisfying. Resolution. After orgasm, Masters and Johnson held that sexual arousal subsided. But many of of the new studies interviewees said that after orgasm, they remained aroused. But here's the thing ... contemporary sex research has shown that each of us is sexual in our own individual ways. There is no “normal” sexual pattern. Each of us is sexually unique. This means that couples can't assume they know how their partners will experience arousal and lovemaking. For great sex, both partners must declare how sex works for them, and then coach the other to provide what they need and enjoy.Oh, and here are Three Orgasm Facts for you!1. Orgasms can cure intractable hiccups. And yes, there's a paper on that.2. Masters and Johnson had to create a "penis-cam" in order to do their studies on women. It's been dismantled since, but it was basically a camera, a rigid dildo, and a motor. This was obviously well before Amazon delivery.3. Dr. Alfred Kinsey wanted to measure the average distance of enjaculated semen, so he used several volunteers, a measuring tape, and a camera. 3/4's of the subjects basically dribbled. But the record holder was ... drum roll please ... eight feet. Dr, Kinsey also noted that he placed sheets down, to protect the oriental carpets. Do different vaginas feel different?Yep, those should be pretty fun to answer. :-)JOIN our Facebook Group - 50/60+ Mastering The Second Half Of Lifehttps://www.facebook.com/groups/masteringthesecondhalfMASTERING THE SECOND HALF (Opinions On Life After 50/60+)Our bodies change. Conflicts in a relationship are inevitable, I suppose. Sure, we try to minimize the arguments, but do we really know how to fight fair? Shouldn't a disagreement end up with a resolution? How many of us born in the 20th century still hold on to old fashioned beliefs about sex? That masturbation will grow hair on our palms? That girls don't like sex a much as boys. Or worse, that it's OK for men to have multiple sex partners, but when women do they are somehow harlots.Porn, anal, oral, voyeurism, swinging, dildos, vibrators, sex dolls ... how many of you are cringing now, having peeked at that short list? How many of us, especially as we age, just let things pile up? Do we somehow believe that problems are just supposed to start occuring in our 50s? In our 60s? That it's just the way it is?I had originally created this episode with a long list of all of the things that I had personally allowed to accumulate. Meaning, all of the small physical issues that I had just ignored because they were supposed to happen as we all got older. A whole stockpile of mental and emotional ones as well. And as I was doing the edit, I couldn't even finish it. It was so ... whiny and depressing. A solid five minutes of this is wrong, and that is wrong. Oh me, oh my. Which was the exact opposite of what I was trying to accomplish with the show. I guess I was in a woe is me mood when I originally scripted it.What I was apparently doing was trying to use age as an excuse for procrastination. Which may or not be true. But let's skip past all of the things that I've personally let slide, and all of my excuses, and get right into some motivation and understanding. Some self-improvement. Some goal seeking. In 2014, at the tender age of 53 and change, I decided to hit the reset button. The HARD reset button. Change everything, completely and irrevocably. I moved a thousand miles from my home state down to sunny Miami, where I knew zero people. Had nothing, not even an apartment reservation. I needed to leave everything behind to start again. Or did I?Looking back, I had lots of questions. Some of which I can actually answer now. So let's look them over, and see where I went right, and where I didn't. Because maybe these revelations will have some impact on your own life choices.JOIN our Facebook Group - 50/60+ Mastering The Second Half Of Lifehttps://www.facebook.com/groups/masteringthesecondhalfMASTERING THE SECOND HALF (Opinions On Life After 50/60+)Our bodies change. So you're into a relationship long enough to be comfortable. Really comfortable. So much so that you skip a little exercise here and there. Hey, those doughnuts look yummy! Sure, I'll have another drink, why not? Nah, I can wait another week before I get a haircut. But I showered yesterday! And then one day ... you are no longer the person who preened, primped, and cared enough to look good enough to date. You slipped. The person looking back in the mirror isn't the same as the you from Year One. Let's start the new year right! By betraying my gender and answering women's questions honestly. :-)Seriously, we men are not the most communicative creatures in the world, especially those of us over a certain age (Boomer-GenX Men, sheesh!). But I am willing! Willing to answer whatever you want answered. And this week, we have these five questions:1. Do guys ever talk about sex? Do you talk about us with each other?2. What do you really think of when you tell us you're not thinking?3. Do you like looking at other women? Why are you looking?4. Have you ever faked an orgasm?5. Why do you find it so hard to communicate? Tell us what you're really feeling! Those should be worth some deep thoughts. Or at least as deep as the male gender can get. But honestly, those are hard to answer. Because it leaves us men kinda vulnerable. And THAT is the crux of all our communication woes. But I'll give it a good try.And yes ... this is going to be a weekly thing, at least until the Secret Society Of Men sends someone to silence me!JOIN our Facebook Group - 50/60+ Mastering The Second Half Of Lifehttps://www.facebook.com/groups/masteringthesecondhalfMASTERING THE SECOND HALF (Opinions On Life After 50/60+)Our bodies change. This is not a resolution story, but one of encouragement. I don't do resolutions usually. Why pick a random day and change everything? Makes no sense. But we are at a unique crossroads, individually and collectively. So instead of what I'm going to change, I want to do a list of what I hope for you.The elephant in the room is covid. It's taken away lives. Balance. Joy. It's replaced them with fear. And even though there is a light at the end of the tunnel, we're still in the tunnel. Solidly in it, in fact. But life doesn't end, or even need to slow down. We know now how to live safely, and yes, even fully. And with respect and love for others.I wish you health. Physical, emotional, mental. I wish you health in all ways.I wish you life. To begin living again with new eyes and a willingness to adapt and to grow. To learn, and to teach.I wish you peace. A world without rancor and hatred. Without endless competition and strife. But mostly, I wish you love. Love of yourself, and from others. To others. For others. This is my greatest wish, that we can learn to love deeply and truly. I believe in the power of us. I believe in you.2021 will bring change. Probably big change. But I will not predefine it for myself. Nor you. Wishes are just ideas. What we do with them are our choices. So instead of making one big choice on January 1st, I'm devoting myself to making lots of choices throughout the year, hopefully most of them good. And if not, I hope they teach me something.Be happy, be safe, and be loved. We'll see ya in 2021.Why We Do The Things We DoBoomer/GenX EditionJOIN our Facebook Group - 50/60+ Mastering The Second Half Of Lifehttps://www.facebook.com/groups/masteringthesecondhalfMASTERING THE SECOND HALF (Opinions On Life After 50/60+)Our bodies change.
