I haven't worked with many adolescents and young adults (AYA, roughly teens to twenties). But when I have, I find that they're often some of the hardest patients to care for. Why? We talk about why it's so hard with Abby Rosenberg (chief of PC at DFCI and Boston Childrens), Nick Purol (clinical social worker at DFCI and Boston Childrens), Daniel Eison (pediatric PC doc and co-host of PediPal). We are grateful to Andrea Thach (PC doc at Sutter East Bay) for bringing this topic to our attention and for asking questions as a guest host. Here are just a few of the explanations for why it's so hard: They are closer in age to some of us (younger clinicians). Countertransference hits hard. There's an in-between space between adolescence and adulthood - and there's something that we identify with in that in-between space, tugging at our heart strings Everyone has been a teenager. Everyone has lived through their early 20s. Every member of the interdisciplinary team. Adolescence and young adulthood is a romanticized time of life in our culture. We remember bucking the rules, figuring out who you are, hair on fire, feeling invulnerable, trying to figure out who you are - and now those adolescents are stuck in the hospital, with doctors and parents telling them what to do, having their autonomy crushed by the medical institution, realizing they're not invulnerable. We talk about these issues and more - what resources to leverage, how to cope as a team. We in geriatrics and adult palliative care clinicians have so much to learn from our colleagues in pediatrics - and though many of these lessons are specific to adolescents and young adults - many of the lessons are valuable for the care of patients in older life stages. Links to resources for working with AYA, from Nick Purol): The Courageous Parents Network has a wealth of information/resources/videos/articles on many overlapping issues and topics related to caring for children/adolescents/young adults with serious illness (from both the provider and clinician perspective): https://courageousparentsnetwork.org Courageous Parents Network Empowering parents caring for children with serious illness through video, shared community, professional guidance, and palliative care. Have you ever tapped into the mystical energy of the moon? For thousands of years humans have been harnessing the moon's power for navigation, agriculture and religious practices. Across cultures, the moon has been revered as a symbol of femininity and associated with growth, fertility and transformation! This week on INSIDE THE WOONIVERSE, I'm speaking with Yasmin Boland, one of the most widely read astrology writers on the planet. After working as a journalist and a radio and TV producer for many years, Yasmin's journey took a new turn once she discovered astrology and the potent influence of the moon. With her extensive knowledge and expertise of the moon's power (Moonology), Yasmin believes that the Moon's cycles can impact on our emotional, physical and spiritual well-being in significant ways. In this conversation we delve into the practice of Moonology, the wisdom of lunar cycles and how to work with the magic of the moon for manifesting and beyond! >>> For takeaways & transcripts check out our show notes HERE >>> Stay informed and be the first to know about exclusive offers by subscribing to Colette's newsletter HERE Learn more about your ad choices. Hello to you listening in Christchurch, New Zealand!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Time Out Tuesday and your host, Diane Wyzga.Imagine this: a friend asks you to arrange a funeral - for their recently deceased sister - with a church and a priest - in a town out of state. The problem being the friend asking you to do this favor is herself now in hospital having suffered a stroke, can barely speak, recall, or think clearly. My sister, Patrice, is both brilliant and resourceful. She figured out a way to draw bits of information from her friend so she could contact the funeral home, arrange for the church, the priest, and more in the hope that her friend would be well enough to leave the hospital to attend the funeral of her own sister.Question: Where are your end-of-life wishes written down? Who knows them? If you've not yet gotten to this task, when will you? And, this might be a good time to think about drafting your legacy story, maybe even your obituary. It's your life! Don't surrender the pen to somebody else. This week's theme on the Retirement Quick Tips Podcast is: Crafting Your Retirement Budget Today, I'm talking about a critical aspect of crafting your retirement budget: categorizing and ranking various spending goals. Essentially, what you're doing is listing out various categories of spending in retirement that are beyond your basic needs. This allows you then to rank and prioritize these various goals, differentiating between Needs, Wants, & Wishes. List different spending categories (travel, health care, etc) and examples of which ones are needs, wants, and wishes. I like ranking them in order of importance - 10 is absolute necessity, can't do without need. 1 is take it or leave it. Try not to have more than 1 or 2 things with the same ranking. Makes it easier to figure out where you'll be willing to compromise if you can't afford to have all your wants and wishes Will vary - health care is a need, charitable giving will be a need for some, a want for others, and a wish for other Understanding where each of your spending goals lies on the spectrum of importance to you will help you make some helpful decisions. Maybe you really want to spend $10,000 a year on travel. But you also want to join an athletic club that costs $250 a month. If you budgeted for both of these, you'll know if you can afford them both. But let's say you can't afford to do both. Ranking needs, wants and wishes helps with this. Let's say that you ranked the athletic club as 7, but travel as an 8. The compromise might be that your travel budget has to drop to $7,000 so you can afford the athletic club membership. Or you may decide that because travel is more important and higher up on the needs, wants, and wishes spectrum, that you'll forgo the athletic club membership all together so you can travel in the way you want to. After all, you can always workout at home instead… That's it for today. Thanks for listening! Do you know the difference in a wish and a goal? Lots of us wish for many good things, but not too many of us see those good things happen in our lives because we've never turned our wishes into goals. A goal is not a wish. A goal: Is realistic and achievable. Has a time schedule. Is simple and specific. Is measurable in terms of numbers and specifics. Is written down for accountability. I could wish all day that I could be an accountant but that could never be a goal because it's not achievable for me. A goal has a time schedule and is measurable in some way or another. I may wish to lose weight, but in order to do that, I need to set a goal and a time frame for that goal. "I will lose five pounds in four weeks.” That's a goal. Now, given that definition of a goal, are you truly a goal-oriented person, or do you just wish a lot? I find many of us are very good wishers, but not many of us take those wishes and turn them into goals that we work to achieve. Well, after all, wishes don't take any energy or discipline; goals do. Wishes don't require any commitment from us; goals do. For instance, you may wish that you had a closer walk with God; you may wish that you really knew how to pray with power; you may wish that you knew the Bible better. Those are good wishes, but my friends, until you turn them into goals, your spiritual growth will stagnate. If you listen to this program regularly, you've heard me suggest things for you to do that will help you turn wishes into goals. For instance, I've encouraged you to put on the inner garments of Colossians 3 on a daily basis; to set specific guidelines for your thought life and practice bringing your thoughts into captivity; to establish a time each day that you spend getting to know God, and many more. Those are just ideas to help you turn from a wisher into a doer. Now, ask yourself this question: Am I a task-oriented person or a goal-oriented person? What's the difference? Well: A task-oriented person focuses on doing things right. A goal-oriented person focuses on doing the right things right. Are you doing the right thing or just doing things right? Certainly a goal-oriented person must be a task-oriented person frequently. But it's possible to be task-oriented without being goal-oriented. In other words, you could work very hard and always be busy, but never truly be focused on worthwhile goals and never see any of your dreams and plans realized because of being task-oriented and not goal-oriented. Why is it important for a Christian to be a goal-oriented person? The Bible frequently admonishes us to look for the big picture and set our eyes on the goal. We're reminded not to just look at the visible things around us, but to fix our eyes on the invisible things; to see beyond the obvious and set our eyes on the eternal. Well, that's really what being a goal-oriented person is all about. It's the ability to look beyond the everyday duties and responsibilities and minutia that tends to eat up all our time, and make sure you're focusing your life and energy on goals that add value and make a difference. Jesus said: Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them. (John 13:17). Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it. (Luke 11:28). I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do (John 17:4). These passages underline the fact that Jesus was a doer, and he didn't waste time talking about what he wanted to do. He did what the Father had sent him to do. He came to this earth with certain goals in mind, and nothing was going to stop him from reaching his goals. He said that he had come to do the Father's will, and he did it. At times the disciples tried to dissuade him from the Father's will, his enemies tried to keep him from doing the Father's will, Satan tempted him to try to keep him from doing the Father's will.

Most of us have to work to live, but that doesn't mean we have to live to work. So what about when we're done working? (Will we ever be done working?)This week, where do you get off? From the daily grind, that is. Not financial planning (more like social insecurity, amirite?), but rather, where we see ourselves when the time for retirement comes. (If it comes.) Everything from hobbit houses and Stardew Valley to sailing the open seas—or at least, cruising the open European rivers. All that plus: Meredith went to a Nerd Palace, Ann's out on Chris Pratt, and Hillary and Bobby met up in NYC where, spoiler alert, everything is expensive. But at least they got to experience the M&M Store through the eyes of an 11-year-old Slay Queen. It's Easter time, and since we covered all the facts and traditions surrounding the holy holiday last year, this year we are rubbing the Easter Lamp and making a list of wishes that we think the whole world may benefit from. We then play a round of 'Who's closer, where the loser has to eat the candy at the bottom of the basket. All this, while we taste and discuss the lifestyle that is, the Steel Reserve, Extra Gravity, Hard Pineapple! We want your recommendations! What is your favorite canned beverage? We‘d love to have a taste and feature it on a future episode. Any additional suggestions, questions, or corrections you may have, we want to hear those as well! Make it personal! No half stars, we commit and stand by the full level we award. 5-Star: We love it so much, we rave about it to anyone who will listen, and actively hand them out to friends and family to try! 4-Star: We really like it, will proactively get more, and will keep some on hand to enjoy at our next social gathering. 3-Star: It's good, we like it, and equate it to our standard weekend selection. We won't go out of our way to acquire more, but will certainly have it again should the situation arise. 2-Star: It's not great. We will finish this can, but will part ways after, and will likely not meet again in the future. 1-Star: It's terrible. We won't be finishing the can, and will need another, better can, to wash the awful taste out of our mouths. 0-Star: It's so bad, it caused a visceral reaction that made us physically reject it's contents.

Lassiter grad Cody Rhodes, along with Finn Balor, Carmella, Liv Morgan, and announcer Alicia Taylor of the WWE visited 20 families through the Make-A-Wish program at Universal Studios on Friday. The wrestlers posed for photos, signed autographs, and gave the families a private tour of the studio and access to the theme park. They also invited the families to attend WrestleMania 39 this weekend. Rhodes, who lost in the main event against Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship on Sunday, said helping others with his fame is the best part of his job. He believes the visit to the families was the most important thing he did all week. Vietnam veterans and their families were celebrated and recognized during a commemoration event hosted by the Horace Orr Post 29 of the American Legion at Chattahoochee Technical College. President Obama proclaimed a 13-year period to thank and honor veterans of the war, starting on Memorial Day in 2012 and continuing through Veterans Day in 2025. In 2017, President Trump signed the Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act, designating every March 29 as National Vietnam War Veterans Day. This year, President Biden honored the veterans in a proclamation letter, thanking them for their sacrifice. Approximately 9 million Americans served on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces during the Vietnam War, and around 7 million are still living today. A $1.45 million contract was awarded to Accenture by the Cobb Board of Commissioners to develop a five-year strategic plan for the county. However, tension arose this week between Chairwoman Lisa Cupid and Commissioner Keli Gambrill as the board quizzed consultants with questions about recommended strategies the county might pursue over the next five years. Gambrill expressed skepticism over the recommended strategies, particularly in relation to economic development, and suggested that the county's involvement in these initiatives should be left to the Cobb Chamber of Commerce. Cupid argued that economic development was a key function of government, and the county could partner with the chamber while retaining accountability to taxpayers And, John Bednarowski checks in with us from Augusta National as the Masters Practice rounds have begun. Marietta's Dansby Swanson, in his debut for the Chicago Cubs, hit three hits, drove in a run and helped Marcus Stroman escape a bases-loaded jam to a 4-0 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers. He was signed to a seven-year, $177m contract and became the first Cub to have three hits in his team debut since September 2019. Swanson admitted the transition to Chicago had been tough, but he was sure he was led there. Faith is an essential part of the Swansons' outlook, and prayer played a significant role in his free agency decision. Swanson's value goes beyond just numbers, and his durability has become a trademark of his game. The Powder Springs Planning Commission approved a rezoning request allowing for the construction of 446 apartments and 11,000 square feet of retail space on a 56-acre tract at the northwest corner of Barrett Parkway and Macedonia Road. South City Partners, an Atlanta-based developer, is seeking the rezoning for the mixed-use development, which will include a mix of multifamily units, single-family homes, and townhomes, as well as retail components, and potential for a sit-down restaurant. Monthly rents will range from $1,400 to $2,600 for the apartments, and the development is expected to act as a "gateway to the city." Five Cobb County players and four coaches from Georgia Athletic Coaches Association's all-state teams are recognized this week. Among the players, Kell's Crystal Henderson, Isaiah Collier from Wheeler, Ace Bailey from McEachern, Peyton Marshall from Kell, and Albert Wilson from North Cobb Christian, earned the GACA player of the year. Four teams from each classification received North and South honors. Four coaches of the year were recognized for the boys, while Kandra Bailey and Stephanie Dunn were recognized for the girls. In total, 27 players were honored, and schools from Kell, Wheeler, and McEachern dominated the all-state selections. #CobbCounty #Georgia #LocalNews - - - - - The Marietta Daily Journal Podcast is local news for Marietta, Kennesaw, Smyrna, and all of Cobb County. Dandelions are cheerful little splashes of colour in lawns and borders. They flower longer than any other plant, providing food for early pollinators. Sadly, not everyone loves them as much as I do. They're often considered weeds, and are somewhat unwanted plants. But remember. Weeds are just flowers that grow where we don't necessarily want them to. Still, they've grown up alongside us here in the British Isles so there's naturally plenty of folklore about these sunshine plants. Let's find out how we can use them to make wishes, cure warts, and predict the weather in this week's episode of Fabulous Folklore! "Sorry kid, you're not sick enough for us anymore." This week the fellas discuss the Make-A-Wish Foundation's controversial decision to change their policy on cystic fibrosis. Apparently, medical advances have made it possible for these patients to live longer, which means they don't automatically qualify for a wish anymore. Also, did you know a year's worth of Trikafta could be made as cheap as $5700? Yet some poorer countries aren't being given access to the drug and it's killing young folks with CF as a result. Why are orcas killing sharks and removing their livers with surgical precision? Maybe Liver King was right, Liver is king. Get ready to yawn… seriously though, the guys probably yawned 8 times between them during the show. Finally for WHAT THE HELLTH!? Gym bros are eating dog food for gains. It's disgusting.
