ASML CEO Peter Wennink calls for a better vision on global challenges to stay relevant

"Huge global transitions are ongoing". Peter Wennink sees the global issues as big challenges, but not only as a isolated problems to be solved. The value generation opportunities from these shifts and changes are huge. The US and East Asia are positioning themselves as new leaders in a new world order, with visions on how to dominate in automotive, in technology for the energy transition, in digitization. Will Europe still have a role? Will we stay relevant? Will the Netherlands be able to safeguard welfare if we may loose our negotiation position in a global economy? ASML says it wants to take co-responsibility in creating a safe environment for employees and other citizens, including access to affordable housing, faster international hiring, good infrastructure. To Jean-Paul Linnartz on Radio 4 Brainport that sounded like the early days of Philips taking care of the entire life of employees, but Peter Wennink does not want be paternalistic. He makes a plea for a grant vision, with collaboration among industry, academia and the government. Also, global crises need a system vision, and strong cooperations, not point solutions. Starting a lab at the university is an example to setting up collaborations. Yet, proprietary knowledge is highly critical to keeps ASML's leading role. Can open innovation work for ASML? Or, is it a must in a global race to pre-sort as a leader rather than becoming irrelevant? In This Episode The Metaverse Economy: How Finance Professionals Can Make Sense of Web3 is Arun Krishnakumar and Theo Lau's new book. Listen as Brett King connects with Theo Lau, frequent guest and Founder, Unconventional Ventures. The metaverse is evolving, the way the metaverse is now, is not close to where it will be. The book is designed to equip fintech professionals with an in-depth understanding of the emergent economic models in the Metaverse and across Web3, and also understand the risks associated with the Metaverse and help these professionals prepare for what lies ahead in this immersive environment. The concept of community in the metaverse is important, we don't want to leave people behind. Then Brett and Jason Henrichs shift the subject to talk about recent fires in Greece (sadly we can also add Maui to the list), the Impact of these fires and the EU response to climate change with author and influencer Dr. Leda Glyptis. July 2023 just scattered the record for the hottest month, per NASA, since 1880. There is no denying that climate change is here. Some of these extreme events are naturally occurring, others man-made, but the number and extent of these occurrences is increasing and there are concerns of irreversible desertification. Banks and regulators need to be front and center, and take more of a stance. In natural disasters the financial system sometimes breaks down -- financial inclusion and financial access are concerns. Major systemic banks in Europe are asking themselves the hard questions, not just taking superficial steps. The cost for these extreme weather events is growing exponentially, economics are in play. Covid made people realize there are no boundaries, it's everyone's problem. Climate change also doesn't stop at borders, a similar degree of focus and urgency is needed. Will Europe lead?

As blistering heatwaves and raging forest fires sweep across Europe, climate change is once again back on the agenda. But Russia's attack on Ukraine and the consequent reduction in energy supplies to Europe has greatly complicated Europe's green transition. Some observers argue that a cold-turkey withdrawal from Russian fossil fuels will speed up the transition to renewable energy, but others predict that climate goals will fall by the wayside as European leaders turn to coal and whatever else is available to make up for the lack of Russian oil and gas. In this week's episode, Jeremy Shapiro, ECFR's research director seizes the reins of power as host from a vacationing Mark Leonard and talks to Susi Dennison, director of ECFR's European Power programme, and Simone Tagliapietra, senior fellow at Bruegel about these competing narratives. Currently, it is dependent on Russia for natural gas that can't be sufficiently replaced by alternate means for at least several years. Europe will be forced to continue to remain vulnerable to its Russian supplier for the foreseeable future. Poor policy has led to this decision. Will Europe be able to chart a wiser course from here? It's unclear at this point, as several of the most promising options are still being ignored/decommissioned. See the YouTube Video for the charts and graphics: https://youtu.be/u32uuhX4Vno

Will Europe manage to become climate neutral by 2050? Cities are a key contributors to climate change. But in cities, projects to tackle the climate emergency, are being developed, too: decarbonisation efforts for energy, transport, buildings, and industry play a growing role. There are promising approaches to reach climate neutral cities in Europe and Germany, but these projects need to be paid for. How may green urban infrastructures be financed, especially after Covid? Can finance innovations, like green bonds, help to phase out fossil-fuel vehicles? These and other interesting questions are discussed by Fritzi Köhler-Geib, Chief Economist at KfW Group and Gereon Uerz, currently Head of Sustainability of Gropyus. Additional experts are Philipp Rode, Executive Director of LSE Cities and Associate Professorial Research Fellow at the London School of Economics and Oliver Weigel, Head of the division for urban development at the German ministry of the interior. “Towards the zero carbon city – Financing urban transformation“ is the first episode of a two-part Cities series within Think forwards, the Podcast of Alfred Herrhausen Gesellschaft. Ryan's Read: China will do whatever it has to. Can't seperate this story from Taiwan.Dr. Dean Foreman and API Monthly Statistical ReportGlobal natural gas issues:- For this time of year we have never had higher prices- Reflects Russian gas inventories are historically low, wind is underperforming & gas needed to prevent brownouts and LNG shipments being snapped up like crazy- Global natural gas market? Not yet because still so much less being trading internationally than oil- Rush to get cargoes available.Domestic natural gas:- Baker Hughes rig counts have actually gone down despite higher prices- Should be able to drill all day and make money- Producers in Gulf Coast have access to premium markets and should be able to export to internationally markets- Producers in PA, etc. don't have access to global value chainAre exports to blame for US prices?- actually exports motivate production. Haynesville is good example. On the margin there is some and it is creating pressure. Seek to place blame, consumer anger.- We have rolled back prices to before the shale revolution.- Should be able to drill profitably in every major basin so what's the problem? EIA modelled a healthy drilling response and we haven't seen that. Supply chain issues, risk tolerance issues, workforce issues, policy environment, debt taken on my companies- Pipeline capacity isn't really an issue. There are some isolated areas that have bottlenecks and there is flaring, but mostly not.Summer oil demand:- 23 million bpd of oil demand - higher than 2019. - Fuels may be switched around (more gasoline and distillate than jet fuel)- Other oils: intermediate oils naphtha and propylene, etc. historically have been 1/4 of demand, now it's over 30%. In August just under 28%.- Drilling responsiveness isn't there. What are the odds that we will get 1.8 million bpd of production growth in US between now and end of year? Note likely, especially with how rig counts haven't been growing.- Some price issues should recede as supply chain issues resolve but with oil and gas, it's a different issue. If the economy remains on track, we will see serious pressure on oil and gas in next year. Lack of investment, long lead time for projects outside the US.- EIA says global projected highs for oil demand are higher than 2019. IEA has a more bearish view on fossil fuels.- If supply can't keep up with economic growth then it could push prices up which will stifle demand.- Numbers economically are scorching hot - so much stimulus and it has had an impact. Even if price inflation overshoots, we will still see a lot of growth.- Global capital investment has significantly declined. Drilling activity has been muted.

Before you think I've again fallen into the well of despair, fear not, for I have rediscovered the river of life ... and the water's fine. The agnst side?  Well, like most of you I've been in lockdown.  Trying to think of things to keep me occupied while sitting inside the same four walls.  And yes, trying to remember how to hug people in greeting.  Not that I was ever a real touchy-feely person.  But still, it's going to be awkward.  Will the people in the post-apocalyptic world accept human touch?  Or are fist bumps and bowing the new norm?  Will Europe just require a single air-kiss instead of two (or even three!)?Part of me was not unhappy with the removal of awkward hugs.  But part was.  I learned to enjoy physical human contact from semi-acquaintances.  And I feel like I'm again going to have to take a remedial class on how to touch others in a non-creepy way.  But that too will come, so I had better prepare myself for it.  Maybe I'll go hug one of the chickens every evening.  Their fighting back should simulate real life well enough. But the thought of post-covid-hugging also brings to light another issue, one in which I'm about 12 months late to the party in addressing.  And that's living.I decided that lockdown meant solitary confinement.  I switched this YouTube channel from one about cultures and far-flung places to that of fighting the stigma and habits of post-middle-age.  I traded actions for ideas.  Which has been OK, don't get me wrong, but had I stayed away from the edges I might have found something else.  And that is where I'm heading next. Now, about you. What has your lockdown been like?  About the same as pre-2020?  Have you also just closed the cell door and hidden behind it, accepting an either-or existence?  Well my friend, it's time.  2021 is going to be different.  How?  Well ... I don't know yet.  But I have some ideas for both of us.Getting back to an over-active, run with scissors in far away lands lifestyle is still a far away dream.  But what if we all found ways to explore new ideas and new things in a new way?  Couldn't the excitement of learning a new 'how' be just as interesting as the how itself?  There are covid-safe ways of exploring, sharing, teaching, and enjoying.  We just need to look for them.  I need to look for them.  And look I shall.  (Watch this space). And I think just as (or even more) importantly, we need to learn to use our new time paradigms to our advantage.  Meaning, instead of rush rush rush, chug out another widget ... we take our time with what's directly in front of us.  Use the world's braking to our own benefit.  Enjoy the thing/moment instead of ticking off another box. Now, as far as resuming hugging ... I've tried but I can't see a way out of it.  There are no real alternatives.  I'm going to have to touch some of you again.  So in advance, I'm sorry for the awkward head bump, but I've forgotten where to put my arms, legs, and whatnot.JOIN our Facebook Group - 50/60+ Mastering The Second Half Of Lifehttps://www.facebook.com/groups/masteringthesecondhalfGive Us A Little Love And Support?http://rickhiggins.com/affiliatesWHOLE LIFE COACHINGhttp://rickhiggins.com/coachingTwitter ⟶ https://twitter.com/2ndHalfMasteryEmail ⟶ rick@rickhiggins.com

He holds a Masters Degree in International Relations from the London School of Economics , an MBA from the Crummer School, and a BA from Emory University. Today's Agenda...1)  Burma:  There was martial law imposed last week in Burma ( now called Myramar).  The democratically-elected government had won the latest elections w/ 80% of the vote, so the military got mad and decided to overthrow them.  Now millions of Burmese people are demonstrating for restoration of democracy.   What will happen next? Note: David recommends seeing the 1995 docudrama Beyond Rangoon  to better understand what is going on in Burma today.2)  Russia-EU relations: Russia has expelled three European diplomats.  This happened when a top level EU official was visiting Russia.  Putin expelled the three because they attended marches demanding the release of Alexi Navalny, the Russian opposition figure just arrested on his return to Russia from Germany.  Will Europe start getting tough on Putin?3)  Iran Nuclear Deal:  Will Biden rejoin the Iran Nuclear Deal, the JCPOA?  Iran's government demands that US first drop all trade and economic sanctions on Iran  before Iran will re-commit to the deal.  Biden  team says Iran has to act first.  What do you think?4) Iran, Russia and China: If the JCPOA allows for weapons sales to Iran, will Russia and China offer this?  Why should the US object---don't we sell weapons all over the world? C.J. Portugal assumed the rotating EU Presidency in January 2021 and has prioritized progress on the Migration and Asylum Pact proposed by the European Commission last September. The pact tackles many of the most intractable issues in the management and governance of international migration, including how to manage mixed migration flows that have presented a near-existential challenge for the European Union. With the pact generating a great deal of interest across sending and receiving countries alike, all eyes will be on Portugal as it tries to make progress on issues ranging from managing external borders better, offering protection to asylum seekers with legitimate claims, relocating refugees and asylum seekers, and returns. Borrowing from U.S. debates on immigration about “comprehensive” versus “piecemeal” reforms, the key questions are how much Portugal can achieve over the next six months, what it should prioritize, and where the Portuguese Presidency can find support for its ambitions. How can Europe manage the external, EU-wide, and even domestic aspects of this policy area more effectively and avoid the policy and political minefields set over the past six years? Will Europe be able to come together on this issue and give meaning to the often-used notions of “solidarity” and “responsibility sharing”? Or will the centrifugal forces on this issue grow and imperil the bloc’s ability to speak and act with one voice on difficult issues? This MPI-MPI Europe webinar brings together senior officials from the European Union, Germany (the last holder of the presidency) and Portugal to take stock of where the conversations on the pact stand as Germany passes the baton on this issue to Portugal, and Portugal’s plans for taking forward the negotiations. The discussion focuses on two questions: (1) what lessons can be learned from the German Presidency’s work last fall on the pact and what are Portugal’s priorities for making progress on it, and (2) how can European policymakers make the case for greater solidarity on migration and asylum issues?

Will Europe be able to achieve 100% renewables by 2050? Albert Cheung, Head of Global Analysis at Bloomberg NEF, talks to Joana Freitas, Ambassador for the Lights on Women initiative of the FSR, about the key obstacles and challenges of an energy system with high penetration of renewables. According to Albert Cheung, although solar and wind are becoming the cheapest forms of power generation, “there are a lot of obstacles and it's a really long road to get to those sorts of high penetrations”. As 100% renewables also mean a zero-carbon power system, it will require a “huge collaborative effort between government, energy companies and the investment community”. Despite the obstacles, several European countries are already setting ambitious targets for the next decade – by 2030, Austria expects to achieve 100% of renewables in electricity consumption while UK will be coal free by 2025. Albert Cheung also notes that this change of paradigm will require “massive amounts of flexibility” as an “energy system that has 90 percent renewables in 2050 is going to operate very differently from the one that we have today”.
