This experience made him realize how much he really needed cheese in his life! He signed up for preliminary training in Quebec, and did his intensive training in France. François discusses the challenges and triumphs he faced while establishing his shop in northern Ontario. He talks about the efforts to keep the terroir of the cheese through the naming process, which includes native names of places and landmarks like rivers and lakes. At this year's Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto that just ended November 10th, François took home 5 awards for his cheeses, including a first place for his Fresh Chèvre Frais. In this week's episode we kick off our two-part series exploring the stunning province of Ontario, Canada!  This journey takes us to four of the five Great Lakes and as far north as there are roads, focusing on the beautiful Canadian landscape. We decided on Ontario after a year of stagnation created an urge for adventure. Traditionally, our road trips led us south, but with the increasing summer heat, we decided to turn our sights northward. Our travels took us through picturesque towns like Guelph, Temagami, Englehart, Matheson, Timmins, Cochrane, and Kapuskasing, We traveled the TransCanada Highway, and explored Ontario's Provincial Parks and campgrounds including Marten River, Kip-Kap-Iwan, and Kettle Lakes to name a few. We ate dumplings from a food truck on the side of the highway, swam in mineral spring-fed lakes and watched the milky way arch overhead every night.  Join us as we recount these adventures and share insights from our unforgettable trip!

Torr Metals CEO Malcolm Dorsey joined Proactive's Stephen Gunnion after the government of Ontario granted a three-year exploration permit for drilling at its Filion gold project. This significant advancement allows the company to further develop the 260 km² project in northern Ontario, which benefits from excellent infrastructure, including access to the Trans-Canada Highway 11, rail, road, and power grid. The project operates out of Kapuskasing, negating the need for remote exploration camps and enabling low-cost exploration. Dorsey said the project, acquired through staking in October 2023, has shown promising early results. Torr Metals' exploration model identified structural controls and stratigraphy indicative of significant gold deposits. Historical high-grade samples, up to 91g per tonne gold, and initial reconnaissance programs have yielded encouraging results. Six gold soil anomalies were identified, with the largest anomaly having a strike length of 1,200 meters and a width of 250 meters. Soil assays returned up to 1.3g per tonne gold. With the exploration permit, Dorsey said the company plans to drill and extend the soil anomaly potentially to 2.5 km in length. Additional work may include soil sampling and ground magnetic surveys. Émission spéciale ce samedi consacrée au Canadien James Cameron en compagnie du journaliste David Fakrikian, auteur de «James Cameron l'Odyssée d'un cinéaste» (Huginn & Munnin). «C'est comme une biographieJe ne me considère pas comme un grand artiste plasticien, mais le cinéaste est un artiste car je peins avec de la lumière»...C'est ainsi que James Cameron, venu début avril à Paris, décrit la grande exposition que lui consacre la Cinémathèque française (jusqu'au 5 janvier 2025). This month Ojibway playwright, author, and television host Drew Hayden Taylor joins Jennifer to talk about Tomson Highway's classic play Dry Lips Oughta Move To Kapuskasing. Joe Pascucci will talk Winnipeg Blue Bombers, NHL, Paul Maurice and shed some light on the 1982 World Junior Hockey Championships. Pascucci worked at various radio and TV stations throughout Ontario while completing his broadcast journalism degree at Fanshawe College in London. He attended his first Grey Cup as an accredited journalist in 1977, driving through a snowstorm to attend the “Ice Bowl” in Montreal. After serving as news director at CKAP in Kapuskasing and sports director at CHOO in Ajax, he joined Winnipeg's CKND-TV (later rebranded as Global Winnipeg). Starting in 1982 as a Sports Reporter and weekend anchor, he also handled football play-by-play for the University of Manitoba Bisons and freelanced for ESPN and TSN.

This northern Ontario town has a recorded history that dates back to the 1770s with fur traders and from there it would prosper. From a pulp mill that supplies all the paper for the New York Times since 1921, to the WW1 Internment Camp, to its historic radar base, there is much to discover here! Born in Kapuskasing, raised in Oshawa, Andrea began skating at the age of 4 and became a competitive pair skater, competing at 5 national championships. Upon retiring from active competition, started training to become a skating judge. After graduating from Carelton University, she began to work for the provincial government, Social Services Department, as a front line caseworker. Retired from government work in 1998 when her family decided to relocate for my husband's job. From 1998-2015 our family moved to Boston, Detroit, Singapore, Shanghai, Bangkok, Detroit. While living overseas, she worked in various capacities with the Singapore Ice Skating Association and the Ice Skating Association of Malaysia. During these years Andrea continued training as a judge, eventually reaching the highest level (ISU Championship Judge) in 2007. She has judged at the 2010 Olympics, 4 World Championships, the Four Continents Championships (4 times), Grand Prix Final (3 times), approximately 18 Grand Prix competitions, and numerous other international events. In addition to being an ISU judge, Andrea is an international Referee and an International Technical Controller. Currently Andrea is the Chair of the Skate Canada High Performance Development Committee. Other work with Skate Canada includes: elite athlete monitoring, member of the Officials Assignment and Promotion committee. Lastly, in 2015 Andrea was inducted into the Oshawa Sports Hall of Fame. Michelle Loughery spends time with Anne Sadelain of Edmonton, Alberta on AR:T ROUTE Radio. At 16, Anne Sadelain's father lied about his age to get into Canada. Five years later, in 1915, he was picked up by police in Vancouver and brought to an internment camp in Morrissey, B.C.  Anne is one of the children of the camp survivors and her father; Vasyl (William) Doskoch was a Morrissey internee. Anne speaks about her father's harsh treatment and what an impact it had on the family to have their father imprisoned in such an unjust fashion. She explains also that Vasyl was eventually moved to a camp at Kapuskasing in Northern Ontario when Morrissey was finally shut down. There he was forced to remain in what only can be described as deliberate post-war slave labour until he was finally released in 1920, 1-2 years after war's end. Sadelain said, “My father committed no crime and posed no threat to the country. Instead, he was locked up because he was Ukrainian.” Research and Immigrant Song music Andrea Malysh. Many were imprisoned. Stripped of what little wealth they had, forced to do heavy labour in Canada's hinterlands, they were also disenfranchised and subjected to other state sanctioned censures not because of anything they had done but only because of where they had come from, who they were." Quoted from “www.internmentcanada.ca” Canadian War Museum - The Internment of Ukrainian Canadians. At the outset of war in August 1914, the Canadian government quickly enacted the federal War Measures Act (WMA). The Act's sweeping powers permitted the government to suspend or limit civil liberties in the interest of Canada's protection, including the right to incarcerate “enemy aliens”. “Enemy Aliens” and Internment Operations The term “enemy alien” referred to the citizens of states legally at war with Canada who resided in Canada during the war. Under the authority of the WMA, Canada interned 8,579 enemy aliens in 24 receiving stations and internment camps from 1914-1920. Otter classified 3,138 as prisoners of war, while the others were civilians. The majority of those interned were of Ukrainian descent, targeted because Ukraine was then split between Russia (an ally) and the Austro-Hungarian Empire, an enemy of the British Empire. In addition to those placed in camps, another 80,000 enemy aliens, again mostly Ukrainians, were forced to carry identity papers and to report regularly to local police offices. This week, we are joined by Kapuskasing, Ontario native, 11 year Pro, former WHA and NHL forward for the Quebec Nordiques, Edmonton Oilers, and St. Louis Blues-Curt Brackenbury-In this interview, Curt shares how his upbringing centered around working in order to survive shaped his character and mindset, the defining moments of his hockey career - how his willingness and want to always compete and often fight sparked a wild journey from the minors to the WHA all the way to NHL where he would eventually land with the 1980s Oilers of Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier in the years prior to their cup runs + how he dealt with difficult times after his career ended and mapped out a path through understanding where his strengths as a hockey player would translate into life - which led him to his current role helping teams, players and coaches achieve their goals through training of the mind and body and finally we change it up a bit in this one and have an open conversation on sports psychology where we discuss the positive and negative powers of the mind. Dr. Nicholas Ng-A-Fook is a Full Professor and former Director of the Teacher Education and Indigenous Teacher Education Programs at the Faculty of Education. He is actively engaged in addressing the 94 Calls to Action put forth by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, in partnership with local Indigenous and school board communities. His teaching and research are situated within the wider international field of curriculum studies. As a curriculum theorist, he draws on different life writing research methodologies—autobiography, ethnography, oral history, and narrative inquiry—to co-create, support, and sustain culturally responsive, relevant, and relational curriculum with school leaders and teachers who seek to serve their different communities. He is a Past-President of the Canadian Society for the Study of Education, the largest research association in Canada. For his ongoing service to his field of study, in 2018 he received the Canadian Association of Curriculum Studies Ted. T. Aoki Distinguished Service Award. Nous sommes de retour pour la première fois depuis les fêtes et parlons du Coronavirus. Ben oui nous aussi.. La ville a commencé à se mobiliser avec les agences de santés de la région afin de prévenir la pandémie. La folie du papier de toilette qui s'est rendu à nous, l'épicerie qui est rempli de monde, le rôle des médias sociaux dans la panique général et ce que la ville prépare en réaction à la possible propagation du virus dans la région. Nous sommes content d'être de retour!!!

La première nation de Bearskin Lake était en risque d'inondation, Kapuskasing a été considéré pour l'évacuation. Nous avons eu une réunion de conseil, ou plutôt 2 réunions, pour discuter de cette évacuation. Cependant, les 3 évacuations que nous avons eu cette année on fait que la ville n'était pas prête à ce moment d'en recevoir. Le staff de la ville qui doit faire des heures supplémentaires, celui de l'hôpital aussi et les agents de l'OPP qui deviennent surchargé sont encore tous en mode récupération. L'hôpital est presque à pleine capacité. Le conseil de ville a décidé de demander des conditions afin de recevoir les évacuations soit du staff pour l'hôpital, ces conditions ont été accepté et signé mais devant l'urgence d'agir, le gouvernement s'est tourné vers la communauté de Sioux Lookout. Pour faire taire les personnes qui pensent qu'il n'y a pas d'avenir pour leurs enfants à Kapuskasing on reçoit un ancien étudiant de l'Université de Hearst. Endi Kodila, congolais d'origine, a choisi Kapuskasing par dessus toutes les villes canadiennes pour y travailler! Après avoir débuté des études à la faculté de médecine dans sa ville natale, Endi a traversé au Canada pour venir étudier à l'Université de Hearst où il a obtenu un Bach en psychologie. Après ces études, il est parti pour Hamilton où il avait de la famille pour ensuite revenir dans la région pour une raison bien unique! Les opportunités. Il a travailler dans plusieurs organismes et occupe présentement la fonction de directeur dans une maison de réhabilitation pour les toxicomanes. Écoutez ce qu'il a à dire sur la région!!

Cette semaine, nous recevons Julie Tremblay de JT&CO(Endroit où nous enregistrons le podcast), partenaire de travail de Seb. Avec l'arrivée du 100ie, nous parlons de branding. La question pour commencer les discussions: est-ce que nous devrions ramener l'ancien logo de Kapuskasing. Nous tentons de savoir qu'est-ce que représente Kapuskasing et comment nous nous voyons(la ville) dans 10 ans. Est-ce que ce sera une ville de vieux ou une ville de jeune?

Cette semaine nous recevons Guylaine Scherer, conseillère municipale et membre du CA de l'AFMO(Association Française des municipalités), pour parler de francophonie. Qu'est-ce que ça apporte à la ville de Kapuskasing d'être membre de cette organisation ontarienne? Est-ce que ça vaut la peine de payer pour en faire partie et pour envoyer des représentants à leurs conférences? On touche aux avantages dont celui d'avoir des ressources pour les conseillers municipaux francophone. Aussi, nous touchons au tourisme dans le nord de l'Ontario.

Nous recevons Corey Olford et Joel Lamarche afin de faire un retour sur le Festibière, les bons et moins bon coups! Jimmy Côté et Sylvain Labelle n'étaient malheureusement pas disponible pour l'enregistrement mais nous avons tout de même la chance de faire le tour de l'organisation du festival! Avec plus de 1000 personnes présentent, nous pouvons certainement dire que c'est une réussite!!

Cette semaine, nous recevons Paul Nadeau, employé de la ville de Kapuskasing. Il est en charge des projets de panneaux solaires à la ville. Comment la ville profite de ces projets? Comment sont-ils gérés? Paul est aussi quelqu'un de très impliqué dans la communauté, il fait parti de plusieurs comités et est partenaire dans plusieurs business.

Nous sommes de retour après un été bien chargé! Nous faisons le tour de notre été, un nouvel emploi pour Julien et un été passé au golf pour Seb. Le Festibière de Kapuskasing s'en vient, est-ce que le comité est prêt et qu'est-ce qui vous attend au festival. Nous parlons également du retour du projet de piscine avec une possibilité des subventions de prêt de 75%.

Kapuskasing Mayor David Plourde joined John Oakley to talk about what has been going on in the town.

Police say they're investigating a sighting of what they call two suspicious men after someone reported an interaction with what he believes to be the two teens at the center of a nationwide manhunt. Retired OPP Detective Sergeant Jim Van Allen with the behavioural science unit and criminal profiler talks to Alex about this.

Michel Bénac de LGS est venu rencontrer Julien avant son spectacle au palais des sports de Kapuskasing! On revient sur les meilleurs moments des 20 dernières années du groupe, le monde de la musique en 2019 et on parle de francophonie!

Julien est allé à la conférence de la Fédération Canadienne des Municipalités qui se déroulait à Québec. On se questionne sur ce que ça apporte à Kapuskasing. C'est une des meilleurs occasion de faire du réseautage puisque prêt de 2100 municipalités au Canada sont membres de cette association. Julien nous partage ce qu'il a retiré de cette conférence et quelques idées qu'il a rapportées.

Un des sports les plus populaires dans le nord qui ne reçoit pas la même visibilité en terme de promotion. Est-ce qu'il y a des opportunités pour augmenter le tourisme à Kapuskasing et dans la région? On se raconte aussi des histoires de pêche et Derick Brooks nous parle de tournoi et de spot de pêche!! Jimmy Côté, le nouveau directeur général du Centre de Loisirs, vient nous parler des nouvelles idées pour la francophonie mais aussi tous les gens dans la région! Nouvelles activités, rénovation au cardi-o-centre et la dernière St-Jean de Kapuskasing entre autre. Comme à l'habitude, on parle de vision pour la communauté et comment améliorer ce que nous avons!! JimChab qui est maintenant à Radio-Canada fait une petite incursion dans notre podcast alors qu'il tourne un reportage sur Kapu.

Depuis quelques années nos festivals ne sont plus aussi populaire qu'avant, on parle des problèmes et solutions pour que Kapuskasing recommencent à avoir des festivals qui font sortir le monde. Dernière année pour le festival de la St-Jean, possiblement la dernière pour le festival des Bûcherons. Nous parlons aussi de la carrière de Brandon qui est maintenant dédié à temps pleins dans la musique! Il fera entre autre parti du groupe les Ras D'Sompes pour leur tournée cette été! On boit une bière de circonstance la ''Think Big'Ger'' de All Or Nothing Brewhouse. De loin l'épisode le plus divertissant!

La neige fond(pas en fin de semaine) et les nids de poules commencent à sortir. On reçoit Guylain Baril CAO de la ville de Kapuskasing pour nous parler de l'état des routes et des réparations qui s'en viennent. Nid de poule et repavement complet de chemin. On revient aussi sur l'hiver très charger pour les employés des travaux publics qui ont été occupés avec le déneigement. Comment fonctionne les opérations de déneigement? Clic play pour le savoir!

Sheldon Reasbeck est un entraineur certifié par Hockey Canada. Il est aller en Serbie pour le tournoi de la IIHF 2019 en tant qu'assistant coach et il a aidé la Serbie à remporter l'or. Il a également été nommé entraineur chef et DG pour la prochaine saison des Flyers de Kapuskasing en Ontario. Il nous parle de son aventure en Serbie, l'ambiance dans l'aréna, son expérience avec les joueurs et des bières qu'il a goûté là bas.

À chaque année, Kapuskasing reçoit des évacués de plusieurs communautés des premières nations. Nous aidons des gens dans le besoin, la municipalité en tire des bénéfices, certaines entreprises en tirent aussi des bénéfices. L'hôpital est surchargé et le service de police de la ville également. Tu veux comprendre comment ça fonctionne? On l'explique et on parle des dernières avancées afin d'améliorer notre service. Aussi, est-ce qu'on peut en profiter pour aider à la réconciliation? On le fait avec une nouvelle habitude! On déguste une bière de microbrasserie(bien sûr du nord de l'Ontario)!

Last Saturday September 29th, I had an exhibit on board the MS Norgoma but I did not want to miss the opportunity to speak with Ryan Amadore before he left with his amazing work for Kapuskasing where he lives with his wife Sophie and son. For the past month, I worked in my studio space, right beside the gallery where Ryan’s work was exhibited. I kept catching a glance at his water or his ducky, the two paintings I could see while painting. His loose yet controlled brushstrokes were a reminder to keep exploring and staying fresh and loose.
