Talent management and skills development are never far from the top of a CPO's list of priorities. As procurement's focus and scope change, however, so will the skills required to make the team - and each individual on that team - successful in the short and long term. In this episode of The Sourcing Hero podcast, Host Kelly Barner is joined by David Hearn. David has led multiple world-wide sourcing, procurement, and supplier management organizations, both in direct materials and indirect categories. He is dedicated to helping indirect procurement groups transform to reach the strategic internal business partner status they have always wanted, as well as working with the individuals that make up those teams reach their full potential. In this conversation, Dave provides his unique take on leadership and team development: Whether category expertise or soft skills are more important to him, and how his preference affects his approach to recruiting and talent development How leaders can use open ended questions to guide their team through complex projects and relationships The types of validation - or evidence - he looks for to confirm that procurement is meeting the the needs of the business

I am joined today by a repeat guest and friend of the show David Hearn. David is a long time procurement executive for companies such as Juniper Networks, Kaiser Permanente and Sun Microsystems. Today, he is the CEO and Founder of advisory firm CPO Advisement Services. I caught up with David at the recent ProcureCon Indirect West conference in Scottsdale where he was talking about Machine Learning and its impact on procurement. Our chance to talk came in the midst of the hotel’s garden, surrounded by birds, waterfalls - and a construction site! With this natural backdrop, we started our conversation about machine learning - the opportunities for procurement and the long term value proposition.
This week the boys are joined by Canadian PGA Tour player David Hearn to chat about tales from the tour, his rewarding Olympic experience & award winning new wine label plus whether or not there are sweet bidets at swanky hotels on tour. Hearn turned professional late in 2001. He was named the Canadian Tour Rookie of the Year in 2002. Hearn has been a runner-up twice on the PGA TOUR & nearly became the first Canadian since 1954 to win our national open in 2015.
David Hearn is on a mission to help forward thinking procurement leaders transform their procurement organizations from being tactical to strategic. As a practitioner, he has led three different organizations - Juniper, Kaiser Permanente and Sun Microsystems, through this transformation journey. In today's Art of Procurement, David shares what he has learned from his experiences to date - what works, and what does not - and he discusses the importance that technology plays in driving the changes that are necessary for a transformation program to be successful.
