It's Asian Heritage Month in Canada – and this week on the show, we'll be joined by Sadaf Ahsan and Sarah Sahagian to discuss Asian representation in Canadian pop culture.  From books and television to music, the Canadian cultural landscape has made significant strides in embracing diversity—offering richer, more nuanced portrayals of Asian characters and (mostly) moving away from stereotypes and tokenism. Yet, as our conversation reveals, we still have a long way to go. In this conversation, Sarah and Sadaf share some of their recent favorite films, TV shows, books, and music. They also discuss why diversity should be viewed as a valuable opportunity—not a risk—by investors, and emphasize the vital role of behind-the-scenes representation in shaping authentic stories. About our guest  Sadaf Ahsan is the senior editor at 3 Magazine, co-host of Frequency Podcasts' The Reheat, columnist at The Globe & Mail, contributing editor at RepresentASIAN Project, and a Humber College journalism professor. Her work has appeared in The Walrus, CBC, The Cut and more. She previously worked at The Juggernaut, Canadian Press, The Discourse, NOW Magazine, and the National Post. Liz Allen Buries the Lede  Our season 5 closer is a real treat! We have an incredible guest, Liz Allen, improv performer, director, coach, teacher and guru Liz Allen. Liz has performed and coached improv for 32 years! She works primarily out of iO in Chicago, (This is a big deal people!) but she has performed and coached improv all over the world, notably at the Edinburgh Fringe and, oh, by the way, she coached The Commune, the improv ensemble in Mike Birbiglia's 2016 feature film Don't Think Twice, NBD. (This actually blows Sarah's mind as Mike Birbiglia is her fave comedian.) Recently, Liz has been delving into solo show writing and performance, she recently performed her first solo show, Tonight I Am My Mother, and is completing her next solo show, There Were Signs, about her years in Las Vegas with her husband and their offspring. This is how Sarah met Liz, on an online solo show class with The Barrow Group, which is one good thing we can say about the pandemic. Okay, she sounds amazing, but how does she end up as a guest on Comedicine? Well, before discovering improv, Liz was a mechanical engineer! What? She worked for fifteen years as a consulting engineer and pharmaceutical technical writer. One night, on a lark, she joined some friends seeing a show at The Second City in downtown Chicago…and Liz got bit by improv. Do engineering and improv mesh? Elaine Miller, Fanny and Me!  In this episode of Comedicine, we get to talk to pelvic physiotherapist and comedian, Elaine Miller. Elaine Miller is a Fellow of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, specialising in women's health.  She started doing stand-up comedy as a hobby, finding the lighter side of female urinary incontinence. In doing so, she found a way to reach and educate women about their fannies.  Elaine lives in Edinburgh, home of the biggest Arts festival in the world, so the obvious next step for her was to write and perform a solo show about pelvic floors at the Edinburgh Fringe. Gusset Grippers, won the Comedy Award at Fringe World, Australia in 2020.  Her second show, Viva Your Vulva, the Hole Story, was one of only two shows to be awarded five stars in 2023.  She collaborated with Monash University on a paper examining humour as a health promotion tool and her #DryByChristmas social media campaign reminding women to do their pelvic floor exercises was published by Rosie Haper from Bournemouth University. Elaine shares some incredible facts, like 50% of women don't know the difference between the vulva and the vagina. FIFTY PERCENT PEOPLE! This is just not acceptable to Elaine. It is also not acceptable that it takes and average of 7 years for women to get medical help with incontinence. SEVEN YEARS!! The good news is that once you find a pelvic physio, most women get better! Through humour, Elaine is trying to change the world. NBN host Hollay Ghadery speaks with Tim Blacket about his award-winning debut short story collection, Grandview Drive (Nightwood Editions, 2024). Grandview Drive won two Saskatchewan Book Awards—the Fiction Book Award and the First Book Award. This is a pensive and darkly stunning collection that investigates the strange and unexpected intersections of loneliness and connection. From his car, a lonely, heartbroken man secretly watches strangers going about their lives in the comfort of their own homes; when caught, he wrecks his car in an attempt to escape. A man hears a car wreck outside his home and has a wild night of romance with a strange woman he meets at the scene. A reclusive old writer starts to believe he is becoming his own characters as he writes. A college student looks to his girlfriend's diary for pointers on how he should act. A mother confronted with her estranged son's death by car wreck organizes a memorial service for a list of attendees she has never met. This collection of sixteen connected short stories investigates the ways we humans so often feel lonely and alone, yet cannot avoid having our lives be contingent upon others--often in ways we can neither see nor understand. Blackett's characters long for meaningful connection and struggle to find it; they are too often unaware of the connections that are right in front of them. Grandview Drive is a collection that builds on itself; the stories stand on their own, but they are strengthened by the (sometimes secret) connections they hold with each other. Blackett's debut asks the reader to think about love and loss, loneliness and heartbreak, redemption and starting life anew. About Tim Blackett: Tim Blackett is a Canadian writer whose work has appeared in Briarpatch, [spaces], Grain Magazine and a small Saskatchewan journal called Swift, Flowing. He holds a Bachelor of Theology and a BA in English from the University of Regina, as well as a certificate in creative writing from Humber College. His short story collection, Grandview Drive, was shortlisted for two Saskatchewan book awards, and a pre-publication version placed second in the John V. Hicks Long Manuscript Award (2019). The titular story, "Grandview Drive" was longlisted for the Carter v. Cooper Short Fiction Award (2012). Blackett lives in Regina, SK. About Hollay Ghadery: Hollay Ghadery is an Iranian-Canadian multi-genre writer living in Ontario on Anishinaabe land. She has her MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Guelph. The titular story, "Grandview Drive" was longlisted for the Carter v. Cooper Short Fiction Award (2012). Blackett lives in Regina, SK. She creates comedy videos for veterinarians and pet owners that educate (a bit) and entertain (a lot). She also is medical director of a small animal hospital in Franklin, Tennessee and she is the founder of The Companion Project, which brings veterinary services to people in need. His live comedy credits include The Second CityToronto FamCo,The Making-Box Brigade, The Bad Dog Featured Players and festivals such as Toronto Sketchfest, Detroit Improv Festival, Del Close Marathon NYC, and Montreal Improv Festival. He teaches improv and sketch classes with Pinch and you see his sketch duo Corpse perform around Guelph and Kitchener-Waterloo. Unlike every other (wonderful) Comedicine guest, who is a health care professional first and then transitions into comedy, Rob has been improvising since before his brain was fully formed. (Grade 9!) Rob is currently in his second year of the Practical Nursing program at Conestoga College. Yes, he is going to keep on doing improv, sketch and teaching improv AND doing nursing, but not at the same time. Would it be cool to teach nurses about improv with his background? Maybe it would, but that's not what Rob is doing here people! Have a listen, Rob is a wonderful improviser, comedian and human and he whoever ends up with him as their nurse and/or in his audience and/orin his improv class is very lucky!!!Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/rob.lewin/Thanks for listening to Comedicine!
