David Woods has been a  PGA of America member since 1999. Prior to that he was a member in good standing of the Canadian PGA. David is the Director of Golf at The Vintage Club (Indian Wells CA) and is the former coach of 2003 Masters champion, Mike Weir. David joins #OntheMark to demonstrate his (in partnership with Sean Foley) new training aid, the ProSendr, which teaches the proper, and functional, wrist alignments in the golf swing. David believes the hands and wrists are the GPS of the golf-swing and understanding their important role and how they move to control clubface alignments and loft is paramount to good ball-striking. While he demonstrates the ProSendr he discusses important elements to quality golf shots such as: Clubface Alignment and Loft Control, Wrist Flexibility, Body Rotation and Wrist Relationships, the Timing of the Wrist-set in the Backswing, the Forces and Torques on the Wrists during the Swing, how the Clubface trails the Hand-path in the Downswing, and Wrist Alignments for Draws and Fades. He also illustrates how the ProSendr can be used for the Long Game, the Short Game and Putting improvement. This podcast is also available on YouTube. Search and subscribe to Mark Immelman.

This podcast is actually a re-release of an episode that I  recorded with renowned golf coach Shawn Clement on his Golf's Perfect Imperfections WRX Radio podcast in July. In this episode, Shawn (Director of Golf at Wisdom in Golf) and I sit down to have a conversation about coaching, goal-setting, vision and purpose, not only in regards to the game of golf, but life in general. Although this episode is framed around the game of golf, much can be learned from this discussion that applies to sport, business and education. We are joined as well by Munashe Masawi, Head Kinesiologist at Wisdom in Golf and former collegiate football player.  About Shawn ClementFor those of you who do not know yet who I am, please consult my bio and know that I am a lifer in Golf and was put on this planet to help people enjoy a game that is so profound on so many levels. Golf can be played so easily with the right focus and can be so incredibly frustrating and elusive when you are focused on the wrong task. The most important tool that started me properly on this journey was the experience I had from age 17 (I am now 51) with the Canadian Ski Patrol and their relentless passion in making sure you knew what you were doing when treating a victim with a broken limb on the ski hill before transporting to hospital with vital information for the Emergency MD.This information helped guide me through the maze of golf instruction that was based purely on opinions that were based on assumptions of how the human body works. To this day, we do not have any documents, seminars, manuals on basic anatomy in the field of golf instruction which is very disturbing considering we are on the front lines of your abilities to learn this game and play for life!Last 20 years:Director of Development for Royal Québec Golf Club and AcademyNew association with Retrieve's revolutionary AI Platform (www.retrieve.com)Member of Callaway Canada's Fitting BoardCallaway Golf-Best Club Fitter in Canada for 2020Golf WRX-Regular Instruction contributor to the best golf equipment websiteLaunched “Golf's Perfect Imperfections” PODCAST available at www.golfwrx.com (their only instructional podcast)Member of Golf Channel Academy FamilyFinal Top 3 nominees for PGA of Ontario Teacher of the Year – 2011 & 2015Director of Instruction at the Richmond Hill Golf Learning Centre 2005 to 2018Playing and Instruction Editor for Golf Tips Magazine from 2001 to 2004Director of Instruction at Taboo Resort and Spa (Mike Weir's Home Course) 2002-2004Medalist Canadian PGA playing ability test for Class A MemberThe only Canadian PGA member to ever play left and right in the same bagIntrawest Mt Tremblant 1999-2001Canadian Tour and North Florida PGA mini tour 1997 to 1999Most Popular Teacher on YouTube from 2007 to 2012 and top 5 instructor now with over 40 Million hits and counting with 73 thousand natural and unsolicited subscribersConnect with ShawnWebsite: https://wisdomingolf.com/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/clemshawFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/wisdomingolf

“Creating an empowering, child centric, PLAYful learning environment and watching children shine.” Kate Tempesta's education, and early career, focused on exercise science and fitness. She later transitioned to the educational arena where she created and taught the movement education program at St. Thomas More Play Group for ten years. After becoming an LPGA T&CP member, she founded the Urban Golf Academy to combine her passions for golf, early childhood education, and movement. To this day she considers herself to have the best job in the world. Kate has spoken on several panels about growing the game of golf, including the Inaugural PGA of America Junior Golf Summit, the National Golf Course Owners Association Annual Conference, Proponent Group's Power of 6 and Under presentation, as well as the Youth & Family Golf Summit at the 2014 PGA Show. Additionally, the PGA of Canada invited Kate to take part in their professional development series, offering Canadian PGA members the opportunity to learn some of the best practices of UGA. The most useful of which are UGA's trademark “Birdie-isms”; effective and engaging metaphors that take the complex physical, mental, and emotional concepts of golf and make them both accessible and memorable for children. Over the years, with Kate at the helm, UGA has provided the joy of golf to 1,000 children annually. The philosophy is that children learn most effectively when having fun at any age. We are serious about the “fun factor” and we are serious about playing golf! In our classes, students engage in age-appropriate activities focused on golf while connecting to physical, social, cultural and academic concepts. Our classes and activities empower students to work as part of a team, build self-confidence and sportsmanship skills, and develop an aptitude and love for the game of golf. Most recently, Kate has engaged with her team to develop the Birdie Basics and Birdie Basics Pro boxes; a joint curriculum, lecture series, and utility kit that gives parents, teachers, and professional coaches alike the tools and access to implement UGA's proven methods to turn their children and students into lifelong golfers. Kate resides on the Upper West Side of New York City. In her spare time, you can find Kate kickboxing, swinging a sword and planning how UGA can positively effect children the world over. Kate regularly practices gratitude and believes in leaving each day a little better off than when it started. Enjoy.

And I suspect that the source of that happiness is based on the fact that she’s combined two of the things she enjoys most in life. And those would be her love of children, and her love for the game of golf…which also seems to be a recipe for her success in business. Kate Tempesta’s education, and her early career, focused on exercise science and fitness. She later transitioned to the educational arena where she created and taught the movement education program at St. Thomas More Play Group for ten years. After becoming an LPGA Teaching and Club Professional, she founded the Urban Golf Academy, located in the heart of New York City. Show Highlights:  Kate’s lost sense of purpose and disconnection with “her tribe” during her early years in New York City The combination of circumstances that enabled Kate to find her true calling in life Why Kate believes that play is such an important part of learning and personal development for children How the Urban Golf Academy got started, and how it’s grown over the past 12 years The concept and mission underlying the Birdie Basics program What the USGA and PGA should be doing to grow interest in the game of golf at an early age The common elements found in golf, kick boxing and sword fighting Why the mind / body connection is essential in the game of golf Notable Quotes:  On how children learn: “Academics, play, and learning are not mutually exclusive. Born in Sudbury Ontario Canada, the 'Nickel Capital of The World', Geoffrey spent some eight years there prior to moving to Ottawa, the nation's capital.  Interestingly Sudbury was where NASA sent the Apollo astronauts to train prior to the initial moon launch as it was the closest surface on the earth which approximated the moon.  It was in Ottawa that Geoffrey discovered the game of golf and though he played hockey like most of his friends did, it was golf which became his passion.  He procured his CPGA card in 1976 and was a member of the Canadian PGA for some five years.  It was while in Florida in the early 80's that he met an aspiring professional for the LPGA tour whom he helped to attain her tour card and caddied for.  An interesting experience, he came to the conclusion that age was becoming a consideration and that it was time to establish a career.  It was the result of a casual game of golf in Toronto (circa 1982) that Geoffrey was introduced to Jim Kerr, the owner of Shaw Laboratories, a full service lab group.  Jim whose daughter went on to swim for the Canadian Olympic Team felt that there was a direct correlation between athletics and sales, and hired Geoff that June.  Geoffrey spent some six years with Shaw in both a sales and sales management capacity until once again golf introduced him to the retail/distribution side of the industry.  In 1988 he teamed up with Denco Canada a full service distributor with branch operations from coast to coast.  Back then they sold alloy, Adaptic self cure composite, film and prophy cups.  As Geoff recalls, it was not until 1990 when Kimberly Bergalis was diagnosed with AIDS that they sold gloves to the profession.  Ms. Bergalis dentist, Dr David Acer purportedly infected her with the HIV virus and overnight the public demanded that the profession don gloves prior to treatment.  Geoff still recalls selling Johnson & Johnson Microtouch gloves for $33.00 a box ($330 a case) and not being able to satisfy the demand.  It was in 1990 that Denco literally imploded and what had been a powerhouse became insolvent.  As Geoff says, they wrote the book which Healthco later read.  He stayed on until the final day at which time he joined forces with Canadian Dental with whom he partnered until September 1992.  It was at that time that he procured his Green Card and came south to Winston Salem North Carolina.  Geoff partnered with Thompson Dental which was a member of what is now the NDC.  They were acquired by Patterson for whom he sold until joining forces with Henry Schein in 2009.  The past couple of years, Geoff has been an independent sales consultant in different areas, including oral cancer and obstructive sleep apnea along with some interests outside of dentistry.

Ask anyone who knows Mark Evershed, especially his students, and the following words may be used to describe him: exceptional teacher, great player, inventor, motivator, relationship builder, inspiration, listener, and friend. Those words are just the tip of the iceberg for the 2005 Canadian PGA Teaching Professional of the Year, who was judged on a wide array of criteria ranging from innovative teaching techniques to instructional articles, videos or promotion. “I was very honoured when I received the phone call that I had won the Teacher of the Year award,” mentioned Evershed. “More now than ever, people are starting to recognize the importance of teaching and I am very excited to be a part of that.”As a teacher, Evershed‘s philosophy relies on “long term relationships.” After studying the philosophies of greats such as Homer Kelly and Persey Boomer, Evershed created his own unique teaching style based on the premise that knowledge, rather than muscle memory, is the path to success and that a lack of success comes from incorrect understandings as opposed to lack of ability. From that premise evolved Evershed’s theory on the golf swing called “T.G.S. Method to Better Golf”, a teaching system consisting of CDs, books and practice devices to help golfers understand and execute the swing.By adopting his theory, he is confident that students will be successful if they understand the mechanics and sequence of the swing. Evershed has invested a considerable amount of time into teaching and documenting his teaching philosophies. He invented numerous devices to support his theory including “The Power Click”, “Weight Shift Monitor”, “The Sequence Tube”, “Laser Club”, and the “Magic Triangle & Ball Position Indicator”. An author of two books (“The Canadian Move- Right Handed and Left Handed” and “The Six Minute Golf Swing”), Evershed has been a feature and contributing writer for Ontario Golf Magazine, is the co-host of “The Golf Report” on Sportsnet TV, has been a regular on The Fan 590 and 680 News radio shows in Toronto, and was the featured instructor on The Golf Channel’s “Academy Live”. Even further, Evershed has created seven instructional videos and a collection of 12 CDs on all aspects of the game.“I wake up every morning and try to improve the way I teach because I’m possessed by it,” Evershed said. “All of my time is put into improving myself and getting better at what I do.” Visit the Golf Talk Radio sponsors and tell them GTRadio sent you they help make the show possible!  Slickstix.com, Avila Beach Golf Resort, Blacklake Golf Resort, Avila Lighthouse Suites and Aramco Mortgage.  Visit Golftalkradio.com for the latest show information, contests, videos and more!
