By God's wonderful design, much good is brought out of the distress and confusion caused by heresies which rear up and repeat in the life of the Church. Confronting these lies with the reality revealed by Christ, heresy serves to purify doctrine, so that the splendour of truth shines ever more brightly against the deepening backdrop of darkness. Though heresy is painful to confront, the lasting result is a stronger, more mature Church. The battle between good and evil waged through all history is symbolised by Moses up on the hill while Joshua fights it out on the battlefield (Ex 17). These two represent Jesus Christ up in Heaven and simultaneously here on earth, among us, leading the Church Militant. Aaron and Hur upholding Moses' weary arms represent Church and State faithfully confessing Christ, that is upholding the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass -- symbolised by Moses' outstretched arms as Christ crucified. The battle ebbs and flows, has ups and downs. It is pressing hard against us now, but thanks to the great stone upon which Moses leant, the victory for good is sure.
