Life can seem pretty dark at times; yet the darker things get, the more Christ's light will shine! Join us for today's study in Isaiah 9 where we'll look into prophecies of light in the midst of darkness and judgment. DISCUSSION AND STUDY QUESTIONS: 1. Isaiah 9 continues God's message that began back in Chapter 8 of both judgment and restoration. Verse 1 introduces us to the person who will bring about their restoration. How will the lands of Zebulun and Naphtali be made glorious? According to the podcast, why do they play such an important role in that region? How does referring to them as "Galilee" give us a time stamp of when these events are to take place? 2. In verse 2, what is the great light that they will see? 3. In verse 3, what will be the people's response to the work of God spoken about in this passage? 4. In verses 4 & 5, what will God be accomplishing among them? What does He do to their oppressors? What is the extent of this victory? 5. Who is the "child" being spoken of in verse 6? What will be His domain? What will He be called? What do these names signify about His character and His work? 6. The podcast explained that the wording of verse 6 teaches us an important aspect of the nature of Christ. How does the phrases a "Child who is born" and "a Son who is given" give us a window into Christ's preexistent nature and His incarnation? 7. In verse 7, why is it a joyful blessing to see that the Lord's "zeal" accomplishes all of this? 8. Despite these wonderful promises of this Messiah, Isaiah 9 continues on to proclaim judgment. What is the Lord's message for Jacob and Israel in verse 8? How do they respond to this message in verses 9 & 10? What does their insistence on rebuilding what God has judged, reveal about their heart to obey (or lack there of)? 9. What does the Lord's judgment look like in verses 11 to 15? 10. In verse 16, what role do the false teachers have in this judgment? In verse 17, what is the Lord's view of them? 11. What picture of judgment does Isaiah give in verses 18-20? How do the people respond to the Lord in verse 21? Why do you think they would respond this way? Check out our Bible Study Guide on the Key Chapters of Genesis! Beloved children of God, walk in sacrificial love and the light of repentance.
Transformed by the Light of Christ The Gospel from Gospel of John emphasizes that true life comes through receiving the Body and Blood of Christ. Jesus teaches that whoever partakes in Him remains united with Him and gains eternal life. The Homily connects this teaching to the dramatic conversion of Saint Paul. Though Saul was actively persecuting Christians, Christ sought him out first . . . revealing that God takes the initiative in seeking us. Through this encounter, Saul is transformed, illustrating that encountering Christ brings about a “new creation.” Believers are Truly United with Jesus A key insight is that Christ identifies personally with His followers (“Why are you persecuting me?”), showing that believers are truly united with Him. This unity extends to how we treat others—what we do to others, we do to Christ. Finally, the Eucharist is presented as both nourishment and mission: receiving Christ in the Eucharist gives spiritual strength and eternal life, while also calling us to become Christ to others. We are urged not to take this gift for granted, but to allow it to transform our lives. Send us Fan MailYour mind can argue forever, but your soul often knows in an instant. Todd sits down with Shane Murphy and Myles Treanor to explore the Soul Alignment Method, a practical approach to remembering your soul's purpose by learning to listen for a the sense of lightness and/or clarity within life force. We talk about what happens when modern noise drowns out intuition, why “alignment” can make decisions simpler, and how spiritual growth becomes real when we act on the promptings we receive. Myles also shares how intense life moments and patterns found in near-death experience research point to a universal theme people struggle to describe with words: the experience of an overwhelming light and a sense of coming home. From there, we dig into discernment in a world full of persuasion, charisma, and information overload. Words can be used to heal or harm, so we focus on where they come from and how the heart helps us tell the difference between truth and false light. You'll also get a guided alignment meditation you can return to, built around breath, awareness, and heart-centered affirmations like “Oh Sacred Heart, I am listening.” After the practice, we share simple questions to ask when you feel aligned: what makes you feel alive, what inspires you, and what truly matters. John 9 : 1 - 38 1 Now as Jesus passed by, He saw a man who was blind from birth. 2 And His disciples asked Him, saying, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?" 3 Jesus answered, "Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but that the works of God should be revealed in him. 4 I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work. 5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world." 6 When He had said these things, He spat on the ground and made clay with the saliva; and He anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay. 7 And He said to him, "Go, wash in the pool of Siloam" (which is translated, Sent). So he went and washed, and came back seeing. 8 Therefore the neighbors and those who previously had seen that he was blind said, "Is not this he who sat and begged?" 9 Some said, "This is he." Others said, "He is like him." He said, "I am he." Glory be to God forever.
Moving to Capernaum at the start of his earthly ministry, Jesus fulfills the prophecy of Isaiah and inspires hope in our hearts as we embrace the light of Christ to shine in our lives. (Lectionary #67) January 25, 2026 - Cathedral Rectory - Superior, WI Fr. Andrew Ricci - www.studyprayserve.com
The Feast of Theophany reminds each of us that Christ has revealed Himself to us. He brought His Light into the world, so we are no longer living in darkness. When light shines in the darkness, we no longer have anything to fear. Christ has shined His Light so that we could follow the Light into heaven.
Msgr. Esseff reflects on the meaning of the "Epiphany" and how we can manifest the light of Christ to the world. He shares how the saints are the stars that show us the way. From the USCCB readings fo the day: Reading 1 Is 60:1-6 Rise up in splendor, Jerusalem! Your light has come, the glory of the Lord shines upon you. See, darkness covers the earth, and thick clouds cover the peoples; but upon you the LORD shines, and over you appears his glory. Nations shall walk by your light, and kings by your shining radiance. Raise your eyes and look about; they all gather and come to you: your sons come from afar, and your daughters in the arms of their nurses. Then you shall be radiant at what you see, your heart shall throb and overflow, for the riches of the sea shall be emptied out before you, the wealth of nations shall be brought to you. Caravans of camels shall fill you, dromedaries from Midian and Ephah; all from Sheba shall come bearing gold and frankincense, and proclaiming the praises of the LORD. In this Christmas Eve message, we explore how God revealed Himself through light—from creation in Genesis to the birth of Jesus Christ. Jesus is the Light of the world, and through Him, the torch of faith has been passed to us. This message calls us to carry that light with love, purpose, and faith, beginning in our homes and shining into a world in need of hope.
#catholic #sspx #adventThere are two comings of Our Lord Jesus Christ, the first at Christmas and the second at the Last Judgment.St. Paul speaks of the Last Judgment today when he says: “pass no judgment before the time, until the Lord comes, Who will both bring to light the things hidden in darkness and make manifest the counsels of hearts.”We know this is one of the characteristics of the Last Judgment: everything will be revealed. But this is also one of the characteristics of the First Coming of Our Lord: His first coming brought to light many things that were hidden before.Recall what the old man Simeon said in prophecy to Our Lady, in the very same chapter as today's Gospel, when He says that Our Lord will be a light of revelation to the Gentiles. The first chapter of St. John's Gospel, which we read at the end of every Mass, also speaks of Our Lord as the light in His first coming, saying that He is “the true light, which enlighteneth every man that cometh into this world”.And in this time of Advent, the Church quotes for us this prophetical passage from Isaias: “The people that sat in darkness, hath seen great light: and to them that sat in the region of the shadow of death, light is sprung up” (Is. 9:2). St. Matthew tells us that this prophecy was fulfilled by the preaching of Our Lord. The light that Our Lord brought to the world with His first Coming is very great:He showed us clearly what our purpose is, what we are made for.He taught us the moral law in a much clearer way than the Old Testament did. Recall the Sermon on the Mount, which shines a new light on the Ten Commandments. By doing this, He gave us a much clearer idea of what is good and what is evil, what is sinful and what is not.Our Lord showed us clearly the meaning of suffering and how the Cross is a valuable part of our life, if we bear it with humility and resignation. Our Lord showed us clearly the way that we must live our lives, if we are to fulfill our God-given purpose. Our Lord gave us the fullness of revelation, all of the supernatural truths that we need to know in order to unite ourselves with God.St. John says of Our Lord that “His life was the light of men”. His life and His teaching changed the course of the world simply because Our Lord brought a light into this world that it had never seen before and which can never be exceeded. But, as you know, the reaction to this light was very different on the part of those who received it in Our Lord's lifetime. When you are in a dark room for some time and then you go outside, the light is too bright for your eyes. There are three things that you can do:Go back inside and return to the darkness.Close your eyes to the light and try to walk in a state of blindness.Allow your eyes to hurt for a little while until they are able to adjust to the brightness. These represent the three types of reactions to Our Lord's light both in His time and ours.
The holiday season often arrives with full calendars, endless to-do lists, and mounting expectations that leave many feeling exhausted before the celebrations even begin. Yet Scripture reminds us that even in the midst of busyness, we are called to shine the light of Christ. Isaiah 60:1 invites believers to arise and shine because God’s glory is upon us. When we slow down, choose kindness, and bless others selflessly, we reflect Jesus to a world that desperately needs His light. This season is not about perfection or productivity—it’s about people, presence, and pointing hearts back to Christ. Main Takeaways You’ll learn why shining the light of Christ matters even more during busy holiday seasons. Discover how slowing down and being present helps reflect Jesus’ love to others. Understand why kindness is one of the most powerful ways to witness for Christ. Reflect on how blessing those who cannot repay us mirrors the heart of Jesus. St. Paul gives further instructions to his brothers in Christ in Thessalonica as to what their lives should look like as Christians waiting for the Last Day. Hearers respect and esteem their pastors as those men work diligently to proclaim the Gospel. Peace reigns in the congregation as those who are weak and faint are treated with patience. Forgiveness trumps vengeance. Joy, prayer, and thanksgiving abound. All of these gifts characterize Christian congregations as the Holy Spirit accomplishes His will for the Church through the word of Jesus Christ. Rev. Brian Flamme, pastor at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Roswell, NM, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study 1 Thessalonians 5:12-22. To learn more about Immanuel in Roswell, visit immanuelroswell.org. “Yearning for the Day of Christ's Returning” is a mini-series on Sharper Iron that studies St. Paul's two epistles to the Thessalonians. Although Paul's time in Thessalonica was brief, he had great affection for the Christians there. His two letters to the Thessalonians show us the joy that God gives us together in the Church and encourage us to live faithfully in expectation of Jesus' coming on the Last Day. Sharper Iron, hosted by Rev. Timothy Appel, looks at the text of Holy Scripture both in its broad context and its narrow detail, all for the sake of proclaiming Christ crucified and risen for sinners. Two pastors engage with God's Word to sharpen not only their own faith and knowledge, but the faith and knowledge of all who listen. Submit comments or questions to: listener@kfuo.org

Let it be Done For You According to Your Faith: Seeing Through the Light of Christ Today's Homily draws on the day's readings . . . Isaiah's prophecy, . . . . . . the psalm “The Lord is my light and my salvation,” and Matthew's account of Jesus healing two blind men . . . to explore the deep spiritual meaning of sight, hearing, and faith. Physical blindness and deafness point to humanity's deeper moral and spiritual inability to see and hear God. Isaiah shows that the coming of the Lord heals not only physical affliction, but the blindness and deafness of a world clouded by injustice, darkness, and moral confusion. In the Gospel, the two blind men follow Jesus not by sight but by attentive listening. Jesus does not stop for them immediately; instead, they must follow Him into “the house,” symbolizing both the Church on earth and the Father's house in heaven. Only there does Jesus question their faith and open their eyes. Why that way? Hear more within the Homily. The Homily emphasizes that discipleship begins not with seeing but with hearing, and that true healing requires not only need, but faith in Christ's goodness and power. Ultimately, in the Church . . . where Christ is present . . . we behold His face and receive the light that dispels our spiritual darkness.
