Third Sunday in Lent March 23, 2025 Always Present, Always Patient Sermon based on 1 Corinthians 10:1-13 https://stpeterchurchmodesto.org
God shows extreme patience with us. Jesus reminds us that the time to repent is now.
The heavenly Father is always present in the lives of his children. He sees every sorrow we endure. He also sees every sin we commit, even if only in our thoughts. He is always present. Yet, he is also always patient. God does not snap at us the second we turn from him. He gives us time to see the error of our ways. He assures us that the door back to him remains always open. By giving us room to share our struggles and shortcomings, he works in us the very repentance he desires and saves us from the judgment that would otherwise be ours.

Editor's Note: Born in South Carolina, Daniel Pruitt attended school in Brockway, Beacon and Glenham before graduating from Beacon High School in 1965 and earning degrees from SUNY Stony Brook and The New School for Social Research in New York City. Retired from IBM, he lives in Dunedin, Florida. Below are excerpts from an article that Pruitt researched and wrote in response to our five-part series on the history of Black people in the Highlands, Always Present, Never Seen, published in 2022. Pruitt felt the series could have included more about local Black history from 1850 to 1930. "I felt a personal need to connect the present, which I knew, with the past, which I did not," he wrote. "This past history was never present and never seen as such over my lifetime." We printed an earlier installment in August. Both are excerpted from his book, Lost and Found: Beacon's Black Community 1850-1930, which will be published in June. I grew up in Brockway, a company town for a brickyard that didn't roll out its first products until 1888, 50 years late to the brickmaking party in the Hudson Valley. Edwin Brockway earned his reputation for brick manufacturing in Haverstraw; his purchase of William Mortimer's country seat in 1886 in Fishkill was supposedly for retirement, but his sons pushed him to open another brickyard. Likely inspired by what Homer Ramsdell was doing with the excavation, landfill and physical plant construction at Denning's Point, Brockway built a peninsula on 48 acres of Hudson River surface, using New York City garbage as landfill, and topped it with clay pits, brick machines, kilns and drying yards. He likely filled his workforce with seasonal Black sharecroppers and tenant farmers from North Carolina and Virginia. After brickmaking became year-round, he coaxed those workers to work year-round. He limited their interaction with the white residents of Fishkill Landing (which was combined in 1913 with Matteawan to create Beacon) by building a village to house and tend to their basic needs (school, store, post office). Today, nothing remains of Brockway except the railway trestle that once brought excavated clay drawn by a small locomotive (we called it a "dinky") into the brickyard. Brockway's beginning was secretive, its existence plantation-like and its end by bankruptcy a loss for owner and worker alike. My parents came to Beacon in 1946 to work at the Castle Point VA hospital. My dad's parents, losing the family home in Spartanburg, South Carolina, to a suspicious fire, joined them shortly after. Brockway provided not only Black jobs but Black housing in those duplexes with small areas to garden for the industrious. Pregnant with me, my mom went back to her home in Helena, South Carolina, in 1947 for my midwife birth and first months of life. When my family arrived, Brockway was full of chamber pots and outhouses where toilets were flushed - not often enough - with lye. Water was gathered by the pail from a pipe protruding from a hill and drank at home from dippers. The main road turned to dirt as it snaked down from Route 9D. Clothes were washed in tubs and hung on lines, leaving them with a pinkish tint from the brick dust. Saturday night baths were taken outside in galvanized tubs, heated with kettle water; showers were taken in the rain with a bar of soap. On my first day of kindergarten, my dad gave me a Mickey Mouse watch that, under no circumstances, was I to take off my wrist. He told me I would be late for school once Mickey's big hand got to the 12 (I was not yet able to tell time). After a playmate asked whether the watch was waterproof, I found myself sticking my arm in the bucket that caught water at the spring that afternoon. Mickey was not waterproof. The school in Brockway was not a one-room schoolhouse, although I thought so for most of my life. There were three rooms manned by three teachers at an earlier time. When I attended, there was only one room in use, overseen by Mrs. Sarah Taylor, fu...

"This past history was never present and never seen as such over my lifetime." His full report, which he describes as part memoir and part scholarship, is available here as a PDF. My parents were South Carolina emigrants to Beacon, arriving in 1946. I thought the history of the local Black community had come with us from the South. No anecdotal evidence or civics lessons suggested we weren't the first Black inhabitants of Beacon. I wasn't alone in thinking this. Although most of my friends were born in Beacon, they all had families from somewhere else, predominantly the South. Until recently, Mickey Reed thought his sister, Dot, was in the first class of Beacon High School in 1951 that had Black graduates. In truth, the first Black graduate was William Howes Jr. in 1925, but he lived in Baxtertown, according to census records, which was in the Town of Fishkill. Were Mickey's sister and her classmates the first Black graduates who lived in the city proper? I had heard that the kids from Baxtertown walked to the Little Red Schoolhouse for their primary education - not the easiest of treks but not the miles more required to reach Beacon High. Howes had to want that degree, even if it probably was of no use to him, as a Black man, finding a job. So kudos to William Howes, Class of 1925, and Dorothy Reed, Audrey Myrick, Leonard Morgan and Eugene Sims in 1951. When I was growing up, the Black community lived in Brockway, the brickyard community in the Town of Fishkill, or in the west end of Beacon, formerly part of Fishkill Landing (which merged with Matteawan in 1913 to form Beacon). My family lived in both. We followed the Germans, Irish, Jews and Italians into the West End, not necessarily in that order. Nothing came after us except urban renewal. The river baptized, fed and played with us. The dump was always on fire; a southeastern wind brought it to the front door like the mail. There were as many as five beer gardens in the 1950s between Bank Square and Beekman Street. Few white people walked through the West End. City parades bypassed us, starting at the fire station a block east on Main Street. Surprisingly, the Black churches were elsewhere until Springfield Baptist opened in the former Central Hudson gas building on Beekman Street in 1946 under Mattie Cooper, formerly an associate pastor at Beulah Baptist in Brockway. Black people filled the homes and apartments on Beekman, River and Ferry streets and Wolcott Avenue. There were a few white families still living in the West End into the 1950s: the Cimorellis and Cervones on lower Ferry; the Russells, Gromkos and Petterossis on Chandler; and the Carmichaels on Beekman. But they were not there long, and Black families lucky enough to get the few available IBM jobs left, too. However, unlike white flight, Black flight didn't have the East End as a destination. They moved outside the city limits. Bank Square - more like a tuning fork than a square - was the hub of the West End, what we called "up the street." The white-owned businesses weren't going anywhere. Two beer gardens, Bank Square Tavern and Modern Cafe (Vinnie's and Jimmy's) were anchors. There was Ike's, a grocer who begrudgingly gave credit and kept a watchful eye with his charge, known affectionately as Lil White Bobby, on the pe...

I'm Misty Hughes, your Mom Mentor and Clarity Coach, here to help you on this amazing adventure called LIFE. I aim to KEEP IT SIMPLE, offering you just ONE THING each week to consider, implement, or share with others. I'll share some personal anecdotes from my ups and downs of raising four kids, including a transformative approach inspired by Susanna Wesley, to illustrate how dedicating even a few minutes to prayer or reflection can significantly impact your sense of peace and joy. I know the struggle to grow amidst life's chaos is real. You fall, trip over obstacles, and get entangled in the chaos of all your roles, like a toddler attempting to walk in oversized shoes. But life demands that you get back up and start again. My mission is to inspire you as I share my own desire to grow spiritually and become more Christ-like. I'll share some of my own journey of attending conferences, reading books, and seeking mentorship, only to find myself overloaded with information and unable to implement change. In my state of despair, I discovered something amazing. God is ALWAYS PRESENT. So, as a solution to this ever-increasing problem of busyness, I introduce a model of simplicity, focusing on 'ONE THING' to avoid feeling overwhelmed. The podcast emphasizes the importance of taking small, manageable steps toward growth and invites you to create your own moments of pause and connection with Jesus. NEXT STEPS
Arcana Coelestia 6806. [3] “To know” involves conjunction, and man is said to be “known” by the Lord insofar as he is conjoined with Him. The Lord also knows those who are not conjoined, nay, the very smallest particulars in every such man (John 2:24-25); but these men, being in evil, are in a different kind of presence, which is as it were absence; although the Lord is not absent, but the man and the spirit who is in evil is he who is absent; and then it is said that the Lord “does not know” them. An image of this condition appears among angels and spirits; they who are alike as to states of life appear near each other, and thus mutually know each other; but they who are unlike as to states of life, appear to each other to be far away, nor do they know each other in the same way. In a word, in the other life likeness of state causes people to appear present, and to be known; and unlikeness of state causes them to appear absent, and not to be known. Divine Providence 218. (3) Temporal things and eternal things are separated by man, but are conjoined by the Lord. This is true because all things pertaining to man are temporal, and for this reason man may be called temporal; while all things pertaining to the Lord are eternal, and for this reason the Lord is called Eternal. Temporal things are those that have an end and perish; while eternal things are those that have no end and do not perish. Any one can see that the two can be conjoined only through the Lord's infinite wisdom, and thus can be conjoined by the Lord, but not by man. But to make known that the two are separated by man and are conjoined by the Lord it must be shown in this order: (1) What temporal things are, and what eternal things are. (2) Man is in himself temporal and the Lord is in Himself eternal; and therefore only what is temporal can proceed from man, and only what is eternal from the Lord. (3) Temporal things separate eternal things from themselves, and eternal things conjoin temporal things to themselves. (4) The Lord conjoins man with Himself by means of appearances. (5) Also by means of correspondences. Divine Providence 220. (4) The conjoining of temporal and eternal ends in a person is the Lord's Divine providence. As it is not possible, however, for this to fall within the immediate perception of the intellect unless the subject is first reduced into an organized form and developed and demonstrated accordingly, therefore it must be organized as follows: 1. It is of Divine providence that a person by death puts off natural and temporal things and puts on spiritual and eternal ones. 2. Through His Divine providence the Lord conjoins Himself with natural things by means of spiritual ones, and with temporal things by means of eternal ones, in accordance with their applications. 3. The Lord conjoins Himself with their applications through correspondences, and so through appearances according to a person's affirmations of those appearances. 4. This conjunction of temporal and eternal things is Divine providence. Third Round posts are short audio clips taken from Round 3 comments offered in the online Logopraxis Life Group meetings. The aim is to keep the focus on understanding the Text in terms of its application to the inner life along with reinforcing any key LP principles that have been highlighted in the exchanges.
Scripture and Tradition -- Fr JM. Dedicated to the defeat of spiritual tyranny - ¡Viva Cristo Rey!
The fact of the Blessed Trinity is present in the first 3 letters of the Bible, the first 3 words, the first 3 verses, the first 3 chapters, and up to its entire structure as "the Law, the Prophets and the Psalms [Writings]". Before Christ came, no one could see it. After Jesus Christ revealed the truth of Three Persons in One God, it is to be found everywhere. This podcast is a sample chapter from "Crucifixion to Creation: Roots of the Traditional Mass Traced Back to Paradise". The book is available in print, as audiobook and ebook here: https://bit.ly/Crucifixion-to-Creation
The Conditional Promises of GodOne familiar “if / then” passage, often called the “believer's bar of soap,” is found in the first chapter of the first letter of John. In it, we find one “if” condition and two implied “then” promises God grants to those who meet His one “if” condition. And the two promises of God encompass the totality of salvation this side of heaven, both our justification and our sanctification. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness – 1 John 1:9What Does it Say?Let's see exactly what it says.If (the condition, something we must do in order to receive the promise) we (this includes you and me, make it personal, put your name here) confess (homologous – to admit, concede, to affirm or agree) our (it is inclusive, everyone has something to confess to a holy God) sins (hamartía – offense, wrongdoing, failure, fault, it is an act or feeling that transgresses something forbidden or ignores something required by God's law, whether in thought, feeling, speech, or action. Literally, it means to miss the mark or the true end and purpose of our lives, which is God. And note, the word is plural, as in more than one sin),This is the condition prescribed by God. It is something we must do, a non-negotiable, if we want to receive the promise that comes from meeting the condition. And, by His grace, it is something we can do.Next, the Spirit, through John, lists only two of God's infinite attributes as proof of the truth of His promise: faithful and just.He (God, the Sovereign One, Eternal, All-Powerful, All-Knowing, Always-Present, Creator of All, of which there is no One higher, no One more glorious, no One more beautiful or of greater worth, and there is no more lofty goal in which to devote one's life than to have a deep, intimate, relationship with Him) is (His current attributes) faithful (pistós – worthy of belief, trust, or confidence, sure, steadfast, of true fidelity) and (of all God's immeasurable attributes, the Spirit, through John, lists only these two, as if they are enough, already more than we can handle) just (díkaios – righteous, correct, perfect, upright in everything, without error, free from favoritism, self-interest, bias, or deception)And now, after stating His conditions and His attributes, the Spirit reveals the two promises or results we can rest assured of after we meet the conditions. Note, because He is “faithful and just” and does not show favoritism or bias, these promises are for everyone, including you, who “confess” their sins, no matter how great those sins may be, how unworthy you may feel, or how many times you have tried and failed in the past. To Him, it doesn't matter— every day is a new beginning.First Promise: Forgiveness (Justification)to forgive (aphíēmi – to send forth or away, to stop blaming or taking an offense into account, to leave, release, let go, dismiss. God, in effect, chooses, based on our confession, to send our sins and the consequences of them away from Himself and us, to no longer blame us for our offenses, to release, let go, and dismiss the consequences of our sins as if they never happened. We are now free from their condemnation, guilt, and shame – see Romans 8:33-34) us our (again, inclusive, which means you and me. Make it personal, put your name here) sins (plural, the sins...

There is no place that we can be that God is not there. God is everywhere all the time. This is a fact that is hard for the human mind to understand. This means you can't just leave God somewhere on purpose or by accident. In verse 8 before rockets or airplanes were created that could carry a person into the air, he knew God was there. Spiritually, have you ever thought or said you felt your life was a living Hell? The lowest point is what you thought you were going through. There is nothing that compares to Hell on this earth. When you are at your lowest point in life, God is still there. He never leaves or forsakes. Being backslid on God, He is still there. When you were living like Hell, disgraced His name, He was still there. It rains on the just and the unjust just the same. God knows what you need and when you need them. His blessings are pouring out regardless of where your love is for Him. If you think that you can go beyond God's love and that He will let go of you, you're badly mistaken if you've been saved. God doesn't depart from His sheep. When it gets hard He doesn't detach from you and say, you're on your own. In verse 9 he speaks of the East and West. No matter how far to the east you go away from the west, God is still there. Jonah was a backslid preacher and God stuck with him even in the belly of the fish, Jonah's Hell. The very fact that He is with us means He can hear us. There isn't a single person that is above the thought of suicidal thoughts. The devil can easily sow the seeds of un-care and before you realize it, your thoughts are on suicide. With Jonah, God had already prepared the great fish. Once Jonah hit the water the fish swallowed him and down they went. God then told that fish to take Jonah to Ninnava. Just as Jonah, God is directing your path back home. You might have to go through “Hell” to get there, but you're headed back home. God knew that Jonah was going to do His work. In verse 11 he stated that even when it's dark, God can still see and is still there. In our lives, it might get dark where we can not see. God can see, and He's still there. God is not affected by the brightness or the lack of. The dark things will come whether we are the reason for them or not. Regardless of the fault, God is there, always.
Once we relax the body, we notice the randomness of the mind. We see how it grabs onto thoughts, sensations, sounds, memories, etc. We can relax the mind and notice the open space of awareness that we are.
Awakening Together Presents Being Aware of Awareness Guided Meditations
In this episode a quote from Rupert Spira is contemplated. "The highest form of meditation is not an activity that is undertaken by the mind. It is a relaxing, falling back or sinking of the mind into its source or essence of pure awareness, from which it has arisen."
Summer of Loss | Lord always present Sunday, August 13, 2023 Peter Smith Job 38-41 Though Job was a man of integrity, he seemed to hide behind self-righteousness during the conversations with his friends. He became accusatory of God and demanded a trial. So, God comes and sets Him straight. When God speaks, Job is no longer speaking. He is quiet and receives all that is coming from the Lord. As the Lord goes after Job's accusations, He is preparing Job to receive the righteousness that only He can give.

Ever Present Week 2Psalm 46 doesn't normally cause people to think about Christmas, but the concept of an Ever-Present God is the very essence of what Christmas is all about. What God has done for us in the Christmas story--his willingness to be present with us--is one of the most beautiful expressions and demonstrations of love you will ever see.Just think about how much peace it would give you, if you lived constantly with an awareness that the presence of Jesus was always with you.
Every situation is primarily about who God wants to be for you, and each circumstance is an opportunity to encounter new levels of favor and faith in the Lord. If we believed our favor was always present, how would that change our relationship with the Lord? Key Scriptures: +Ephesians 3:17-19. [...] so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.
