This week Randalynn and Vicki are excited to introduce you to an incredible human. She is a fellow podcaster, a writer and a professor with a PhD in English- Meghan Hurley Powell. Meghan has so much to share with the world, but on this episode we had her deep dive into journaling and how to approach writing your own book - which she just did! So many survivors in our community want to work through journaling but do not know exactly how to start. On this episode we chat about getting started.  Meghan helps us tackle some ways to journal and get pen to paper so to speak. She even has prompts to get started, guides on her website and a webinar - all for free!  Her book is now available for pre-order - "Guide to Journaling" She has such an incredible heart that part of the proceeds funnel directly into a scholarship for young women to apply to college. So incredible!  She is also the host of a podcast “The Power Within Her” is all about helping women seek self-empowerment to live a life that makes us excited! The goal is to be intentional about embracing the power of critical thinking and personal growth in order to achieve those dreams on our hearts. We're going to break free of societal expectations, create new stories that serve us, and have some fun with the process of growing into the type of women who embrace the incredible power within ourselves. It's something we all do in the beginning after a life changing event… we live in fear. On this episode Vicki and Randalynn chat about how we can learn to live WITH fear… instead of IN fear all the time. There comes a point where we have to accept and process the fear, but we also must not allow it to control our lives.  If we constantly live in fear, how do we continue to live our lives?  How can you transition from IN fear to WITH Fear:    Having someone who's been through a similar situation to talk with. Someone that understands where you are at, and can help you work through the fear. Seeking professional help. A therapist or counselor can help with tools to help you get move through or even past the fear you may be having.  Practice self care and move your body. This can help reduce anxiety, depression and help with the feeling of fear.  We know that we cannot remove all the fear from our lives, but we also want to work toward a life where we can focus on LIVING! It's something that you have to stay mindful of. It can come in waves at time. You may be doing great for awhile and then it creeps back in some how. We know that it does not go away, but we can work to reduce the impact it has on our everyday lives.  Make sure you are following along with us on Instagram and Facebook.  https://www.instagram.com/sipswithsurvivors/ https://www.facebook.com/Sips-With-Survivors-103249108875275

In this episode Randalynn and Vicki discuss how to ask for what you need or want in relationships.  Sometimes it can truly be difficult to ask for what we need, or speak up when we feel we deserve something other than what we are receiving. This can be at work, in a marriage and in friendships.  Saying what we need or want from a relationship is half the battle of achieving a successful one! So many times we do not want to have that awkward conversation with a friend, or spouse, but we not doing ourselves or them any favors by holding in what we need.  Find yourself some friends that let you talk things out, and that you feel comfortable sharing with. Let them do the same with you. There are going to be times in our lives where we need to rely on others, and we need to work to ask for the support and help we need. These are YOUR FEELINGS and it is YOUR LOSS.   Some things you may want to say to your former self: "you were incredible and I loved how..." "there are days I still wish I was able to..." "I'm angry because this isn't fair!" (yes, I said it, it's not fair). As you go through this process things may come to mind that you didn't even realize were lingering, that you'd buried deep down - let it out, it's okay!   Here are some more prompts for writing that letter. I really wish that... What I miss the most... Sometimes I think about... I hope that...

This week Vicki and Randalynn are diving in and talking about What if you could... So many times we stay in a place of comfort. We know we can do this, so we stay here. You've done this before,  you know how to do it and you are comfortable.  This can be anything... a job, a relationship, exercise program or lack there of.  We forget sometimes that we are actually all stronger than we think. We just don't know that to be true until we don't really have a choice.  Case in point - being diagnosed with cancer. You find out that you are so much stronger and capable than you ever thought.  But let's look beyond that diagnosis. A lot of what holds us back is the fear of failure. We need to change our mindset and instead of looking at it as a failure, look at it as an opportunity for growth, or a learning experience. All you have to do is try sometimes. In the end you will learn what you could do, where you may have needed to focus or train a bit harder for next time and the experience allows for you to grow.  Enjoy $5 off on us with Ohza Mimosas this month with code: SIPSWITHSURVIVORS ohzamimosas.com/sipswithsurvivors

As we set out to plan for our content this year, we wanted to start with New Year, New You... but this might not be what you think.  More times than not the phrase is used for physical reasons… but let's be honest, it's way more than that.  It seems we are always trying to find ourselves or figure things out.  We are both goal setters, and wanted to use this episode to chat through setting goals that are important to you. That can be in relation to your health, career, family, etc.  There are so many ways to look at goal setting and progress in life, this is just ONE of those ways. Setting goals can help us move forward in life and prioritize what is important - it helps you organize what you want to focus on and what you want to achieve. It helps you to create a roadmap to get to your desired outcome.  Goals can be big or small, and most importantly, they are whatever you want them to be. Setting the goal or intention allows us to work toward achieving things we truly want to accomplish. Remember we don't have to live every single moment of our lives planned out. Allow for spontaneity and fun! Goals are a means to guide us to accomplishments and achievements. They are stepping stones and mile markers. After a few recent losses in our cancer community, we have decided it was time to dive in and chat a bit about grief. There is never a good time to talk about this, but there is no time like the present as so many of us know.  When you become a part of the cancer community you form relationships with other cancer patients and care givers. It's something that's so comforting, because this person gets you - they know what it's like to be in your shoes. There are times that the people we meet, who become our friends and support system, are no longer with us.  No matter what, always remember to keep going. Do it for them, do it for others battling, and do it for you. Because that's what they want for you to do. They don't want you to look back and only remember the loss. Focus on the good times, the best parts they brought out in you.  So continue to support others impacted by the loss, advocate, keep living, keep doing all the things that bring you joy and are important to you because if they could, they'd be doing the same.   We don't think this ever gets any easier. We don't cry or mourn each loss any less…each one hurts just the same. We have learned what we need sometimes to process is time and support from others.  Please share this episode with someone you know may be dealing with a loss of a loved one and needs a little reassurance that they are not alone.  **We will be back in the new year after a 2 week break! "Are you okay?" - Let's be honest, do you truly answer this truthfully when asked?  More times than not, chances are that you don't.  Or maybe it's makes you cringe and you quickly answer "good", "okay", or "fine" because answering honestly just takes too much emotional energy sometimes.    On today's episode Randalynn and Vicki discuss how as a cancer survivor, divorcee, or any other challenging circumstances it's completely a-okay  to not be okay.  Sometimes you just need time or the tools to work through what's going on in order to be okay.  We weren't always as good at saying "I'm actually not okay today" but with time and practice we've each gotten better.
