In New Jersey in 2016 there was a string of missing and murdered women. Someone was targeting sex workers, luring them in and then murdering them. All of these women had friends or family that went to police with critical information to find the suspect, but over and over again police failed to properly investigate. The cases were not even linked until the final victim's family and friends worked together to lure the murderer in himself. This case shows that a murderer can be caught by dedicated citizens even when the police aren't doing their due diligence. Today we are talking about hippos! 6000 miles away from their natural habitat in Africa, a subspecies of the common hippo has formed in Columbia. These are known as the “Cocaine Hippos.” In the 1980's the notorious drug lord, Pablo Escobar, illegally imported 1000's of species of exotic animals to his zoo “Hacienda Napoles.” His prize exhibit were his four hippos, one male and four females. After Escobar's death in 1993, most the animals were removed, from the zoo, but the hippos proved too difficult to relocate so were left to live out their lives. These hippos thrived in the lush green and wet Columbian environment they bred with each other and their numbers exploded. Eventually they escaped the ranch and have now made their homes in the lakes and rivers of Columbia, and they are wreaking havoc on the ecosystem. They have become the largest alien invasive species the world has ever know and now the Columbian government is desperately trying to find a solutions to control the population before their ecosystem collapses. Join us today as our recurring guest host, and brother Sunny, takes us on a wild ride. D.B. Cooper (if that's his real name) is the worlds most famous plane hijacker. On November 24th, 1971 he hijacked Northwest Orient Airlines Flight 305. Surprisingly he was actually a somewhat pleasant hijacker as he was accommodating to the flight staff's concerns and he did not physically harm anyone during his crime. He demanded $200,000 in cash and several parachutes before his escape. He escaped by jumping from the Boeing 727 aircraft, mid-flight, after he lowered the onboard staircase, never to be seen again. In part two, we discuss the extensive search efforts law enforcement underwent to find any trace of D.B or the stolen cash. Life in the middle ages was difficult to say the least. Peasants lived in damp cold houses, food was scarce and work was hard. Life as a noble in a castle was better, but still not great. Castles could be just as damp and cold, and very stuffy and moldy due to the stone architecture. Waste lined the streets and polluted the rivers, and in general it was a pretty dirty time in history. Infant mortality rate was outrageously high at 50% and if you made it past one year old, average life expectancy was still only around 40 years old. Due to the harsh conditions, the odds were stacked against your health and wellbeing. Most people would die young due to disease and injury and some even died from the “treatments” of these diseases. Today we will dive into the background of medicine in the Middle Ages and some of the afflictions you might have been diagnosed with if you lived in that time. Today we travel to the United Kingdom to discuss a truly terrifying case of domestic abuse. Intimate partner violence affects over 12 million people each year, and in the U.K. domestic abuse crimes account for 16% of all violent crimes. Statistics for intimate partner violence are difficult to gather due to the high rate of these crimes going unreported. Those crimes unreported are thought to be even higher for men. Men are two and a half times more likely not to report domestic abuse, due to societal pressures causing men to feel like they need to be strong and take charge in a relationship. This is where Alex Skeel found himself when his girlfriend Jordan Worth started abusing him. Alex endured unimaginable torture during his relationship with Jordan and it almost cost him his life. For our Halloween special, we bring you two frightening American urban legends! First Rainie takes us to the state of Virginia where the “Bunny Man” roams Fairfax County. Douglas Griffin was an escaped mental patient who roams the forest in Fairfax killing and mutilating little bunnies shoes corpses he hangs from his bridge. Legend goes that if you go to the Colchester Overpass (colloquially known as Bunny Man Bridge) on Halloween night and call out “Bunny Man, Bunny Man, Bunny Man” at midnight, he will appear in his bunny suit and cut off your head with an axe before hanging your body from the bridge like he has will all his other helpless victims. Then McKenzie takes us to Staten Island where the legend of Cropsey has been told for centuries. Cropsey (also an escaped mental patient) kidnaps and tortures children before killing them. This was often used as a cautionary tale to keep young children from wandering off, especially into the woods or into the tunnels under the abandoned Willowbrook State School where Cropsey is said to live. This was harmless until the 70's when the tale became all too real!If you liked listening to the show and want to hear more from us in the future then please rate review and subscribe to us in Apple podcasts or follow us on your favorite podcatcher. Today we have something really special for you guys. We recorded a live podcast show last week. We had Melynda from the Hungry Hustle join us as we discussed Oregon serial killers. Melynda covered Dayton Leroy Rogers, who focused on killing sex workers and discarding their bodies in the forest. We discussed the serial killer Jerry Brudos, the "Shoe Fetish Slayer" who murdered four women in the late 1960's. Jerry had a fetish for women's shoes and women's clothing, and desired to have complete control over his victims. Jerry is a case study that shows the escalation from petty theft to murder, rape, and necrophilia. Jerry was eventually caught after, the task force created to investigate into the multiple missing women in the area, discovered multiple bodies in the Willamette River. They were also tipped off to sightings of a large red headed man dressed in women's clothing lurking about. If you liked listening to the show and want to hear more from us in the future then please rate review and subscribe to us in Apple podcasts or follow us on your favorite podcatcher. In 2007 people began going missing while out on what they thought were ordinary hikes in National Forests of the Southeast U.S. Their debit and credit cards would be used several times for cash withdrawals after their dissapearacnes and then soon their bodies would be discovered. Often these bodies would not be found whole. The killer would be caught on bank security cameras although he himself well enough that he couldn't be identified. This killer made a monumental mistake however, when he abducted Meredith Emerson. In the struggle for her life she would create a cascade of evidence that would lead to Gary Hilton's capture, although she would pay for it with her life. On October 11th, 1973 an incident occurred along the banks of the Pascagoula River in Pascagoula Mississippi. Charles Hickson (age 42) and Calvin Parker (age 19) were fishing along the banks of the river that evening when A UFO appeared. The two men were taken aboard the craft and experimented on. We will briefly discuss the initial incident but if you want further details on that we suggest you go listen to our “Alien Encounters” episode #45. In today's episode we are going to go over transcripts from Charles and Calvin's hypnosis sessions as they relive their encounter. Sometimes murderers confess to their crimes, their guilt eats at them to the point that they have to get it off of their chests. Others are so proud and confident that they even brag about their crimes, but would a killer go so far as write about their crimes in a book? Today we will be diving into the murder of Dariusz Janiszewski and the book that detectives believed partially confessed to the crime. Krystian Bala was adamant that he was not the killer, but his book “Amok” seemed to hold a little more than mere coincidence with the case. 18 year old Robert and 16 year old Michael Bever were the eldest of seven siblings born to April and David Bever. The family lived a solitude life in a large home in Broken Arrow Oklahoma. Due to their lack of interaction with the outside world Michael and Robert became each other's best friends and did everything together. They developed a fascination for serial killers and mass shooters. Fascination quickly grew into an obsession and the pair decided they wanted the same kind of infamy for themselves that these killers had. They began to develop a plan for a murder spree, which would start with their own family and amassed an arsenal of weapons. On July 22nd, 2015 They would attempt to carry out their plan which would cost the lives of many of their siblings and both their parents.
