FBI Arresting Serial Killers, From Computer Data to Danger. Forget what you see in movies and on TV about serial killers and how they're caught. In this podcast interview we discuss the true realities of investigating these criminals and the crucial role of the FBI. The interview is available on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and the show's website. A serial killer, or serial murderer, is someone who kills three or more people over a period, driven by psychological gratification. The FBI identifies motives like anger, thrill-seeking, financial gain, and attention-seeking. Serial killers often have specific victim profiles, such as demographic traits or gender. The FBI analyzes these patterns to track down the killers and understand their motives. Though distinct from mass murderers, spree killers, or contract killers, serial killers can share traits with these other types of criminals. FBI Arresting Serial Killers, From Computer Data to Danger. Listen to this for free in Apple Podcasts, Spotify, our website or most major podcast platforms. The term "serial killer" is often credited to former FBI special agent Robert Ressler, who used "serial homicide" in a 1974 lecture at the Police Staff College in Bramshill, England. Ann Rule, in her book Kiss Me, Kill Me, credits LAPD detective Pierce Brooks with coining the term and creating the Violent Criminal Apprehension Program (ViCAP) system in 1985. Criminologist Ernst Gennat first used the German term Serienmörder ('serial murderer') in 1930 to describe Peter Kürten. Peter Vronsky, in Serial Killers: The Method and Madness of Monsters (2004), notes that while Ressler popularized "serial homicide" in 1974, the terms "serial murder" and "serial murderer" appeared earlier in John Brophy's The Meaning of Murder (1966) and a 1967 Washington, D.C. newspaper review. FBI Arresting Serial Killers, From Computer Data to Danger. Our guest, Michael Harrigan, is a retired FBI agent, military veteran, and former police officer from Connecticut. He discusses the FBI's role in investigating serial killers and shares insights from his career, highlighting the differences between police work and FBI operations, from desk work to danger from Quantico to Washington, D.C. We discuss so much that people don't know about the role of the FBI in investigating and Arresting Serial Killers. I'd Rather Be Reading

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 20, 2024 103:15

There are no two ways around this fact: today's conversation is tough. It's really, really tough. Today, April 20, 2024, marks 25 years since the Columbine High School massacre in Littleton, Colorado. I woke up this morning and read an article in People magazine about Frank DeAngelis, who was the principal at Columbine at the time of the shooting. In the article, DeAngelis said that every single morning, he wakes up and says the names of those killed in that day's horrible events. He said he almost died twice that day, and, in his words, “For whatever reason God spared me that day. So I need to try to help others.” I will take a page from Principal DeAngelis and begin this episode by saying the names of the 12 students and one teacher killed that day: Cassie Bernall, Steven Curnow, Corey DePooter, Kelly Fleming, Matt Kechter, Daniel Mauser, Danny Rohrbough, Dave Sanders, Rachel Scott, Isaiah Shoels, John Tomlin, Lauren Townsend, and Kyle Velasquez. Thirteen people who woke up on this morning 25 years ago and headed into school for what they probably imagined would be a typical Tuesday—and they never came home. Today on the show I have Dave Cullen, who wrote the definitive book on the Columbine massacre, simply titled Columbine, in 2009, 10 years after the attack happened. It took Dave a full decade to write this masterpiece, and he followed it up with a book about the Parkland school shooting, simply titled Parkland, in 2019. Dave's Columbine book has a new edition and we talk about that in today's episode. You can feel Dave's passion for a topic he spent a full decade writing about oozing throughout this conversation. I was 12 years old and in the sixth grade on April 20, 1999, when perpetrators Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold shot and killed 12 fellow classmates and a teacher at the school. The massacre was also an attempted bombing that failed, and 10 of the 12 students killed were in the school library, the epicenter of the attack, where Harris and Klebold also killed themselves at the massacre's end. When it happened, Columbine was the deadliest mass school shooting at a K-12 school in U.S. history; Harris and Klebold had been planning their attack for at least a year and planned for it to be primarily a bombing attack, and secondarily a shooting attack. When the bombs they'd built failed to detonate, they began shooting. Their motive remains inconclusive, but Dave and I get into the “why” of it all in our conversation today. Its aftermath has unfortunately spawned dozens of copycat killings, called “the Columbine effect,” and the word “Columbine” itself has become a word symbolizing school shootings. The attack took place from 11:19 a.m. to 12:08 p.m., culminating in the suicides of Harris and Klebold. In 2007, the Columbine Memorial opened to the public, and two years later, in 2009, Dave's book came out. Dave is considered the nation's foremost authority on Columbine, and his book covers two major storylines: the killers' evolution leading up to the attack, and the survivors' struggles with its aftermath after it happened. Chapters alternate between those two stories, and the book spent eight weeks on The New York Times bestseller list and won numerous awards, drawing comparisons to Truman Capote's classic In Cold Blood and Ann Rule's The Stranger Beside Me. This conversation is a difficult one, but necessary.   Columbine by Dave Cullen The audiobook is also available “Confronting: Columbine” podcast

On the night of May 19, 1983, Diane Downs and her three children, Christie, 8, Cheryl, 7, and Danny, 3, were shot on a rural road outside of Springfield, Oregon. Cheryl died from her injuries. Christie and Danny were gravely injured. Diane suffered non-life threatening wounds to her left arm. She claimed a bushy-haired stranger had shot them. A man-hunt came up empty for the shooter. Suspicion quickly landed on Diane partly because of her lack of emotion.  She had a history of messy affairs and entanglements -- most recently with a married man named Knick Knickerbocker. Diane and Knick met at the post office where they both worked. Knick had been in love with Diane but was adamant that he had no interest in being a father. Listen to both parts now, ad-free on Patreon.Sources:https://www.youtube.com/@DDTV1983/videos Small Sacrifices 1989 LMN Movie  http://www.dianedowns.com/Gun%20Search.htmhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SsMXTsU4eqE https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/lifestyle/1984/06/12/the-mother-38/13b24fdf-7294-4623-ad2d-0665435ceed4/https://www.amazon.com/Small-Sacrifices-Story-Passion-Murder/dp/0451166604https://abc.com/shows/2020/episode-guide/2019-03/22-my-mothers-sinshttps://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/daughter-downs-carried-during-trial-goes-public/ https://www.sfgate.com/news/article/obituary-pierce-brooks-3011469.php https://www.oregonlive.com/news/2010/05/new_twist_revealed_in_diane_do.html https://medium.com/@alexishammondwrites/i-read-best-kept-secrets-by-child-killer-diane-downs-so-you-dont-have-to-9aca09a8d059https://abc.com/shows/2020/episode-guide/2019-03/22-my-mothers-sins https://www.glamour.com/story/i-found-out-my-mother-was-a-killer-the-rebecca-babcock-story  https://www.huffpost.com/entry/ann-rule-sons-theft_n_7111854 https://www.simonandschuster.com/authors/Ann-Rule/1692136https://www.newspapers.com/image/444587870/?match=1&terms=ann%20rule%20

What a CreepSeason 24, Episode 7Diane DownsDiane Downs gained infamy for the 1983 shooting of her three children, one of whom died, in Springfield, Oregon. The case became highly publicized due to the shocking nature of the crime and the subsequent investigation and trial. On May 19, 1983, Diane Downs drove her children to a rural road and shot them at close range. She then drove VERY SLOWLY  to a hospital, claiming that a “bushy-haired stranger” had shot her and her children during a carjacking attempt. However, inconsistencies in her story and evidence led investigators to suspect her involvement in the crime. Anne Rule's book Small Sacrifices was turned into a TV movie starring Farah Fawcett and Ryan O'Neal that garnered huge ratings. Refusing to accept the findings, Ronda's mother, Barb Thompson, launched her own investigation. For readers of Ann Rule and Gregg Olsen, a riveting new true crime book from the acclaimed author of True Crime Addict and creator/host of the podcasts True Crime This Week and The Philosophy of Crime, as he explores the unsolved murder of 16-year-old Lisa Pruett in the real life town of the bestselling novel Little Fires Everywhere for a painstakingly researched account of a senseless and heartbreaking tragedy and the people who were pulled into its aftermath. In September of 1990, in the Cleveland suburb of Shaker Heights, sixteen-year-old Lisa Pruett, a poetry lover and member of a church youth group, was on her way to a midnight tryst with her boyfriend, when she was viciously stabbed to death only thirty feet from the boy's home. The murder cast a palpable gloom over the upscale community and sparked accusations, theories, and rumors among Lisa's friends and peers. Together they wove a damning narrative that circled back to a likely suspect: “weird” high school outcast Kevin Young. Without a shred of evidence the teen was arrested, charged, and tried for the crime. His eventual acquittal didn't squelch the anger and outrage among those who believed that Kevin got away with murder. With a fresh perspective and painstaking research culled from police files, court records, transcripts, uncollected evidence, and new interviews, James Renner reconstructs the events leading up to and following that heartbreaking night. What emerges is a portrait of a community seething with dark undercurrents—its single-minded authorities, protective status-conscious parents, and the deeply peer-pressured teens within Lisa's circle.Who had the capacity for such unchecked violence? What monsters still lurk in the dark? After more than thirty years, questions like these continue to fester among the community of Shaker Heights, Ohio, still deeply scarred by wounds that remain hidden, unspoken, and unhealed.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. If you feel like you could have done a better job as a mom, and I'm pretty sure we all feel that way sometimes, I'll guarantee you you did a better job than Diane Downs. If watching an episode of Hoarders makes you feel pretty good about how clean your house actually is - listening to this episode will make you feel like Mother of the Year. This is Season 4, Episode 22. Our book this week is Small Sacrifices by Ann Rule. We'll also take a look at a mom who is wanted for the murder of her 5 year old son. It's hard to imagine that a mom could ever do something so evil, but according to a 2016 article by Phillip Resnick, a professor of psychiatry at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, the United States has the highest rate of child murder among developed nations, and the most common perpetrator of child homicide is a parent. In fact, about 2.5% of all homicide arrests in the United States are for parents who have killed their children. I know that is very disturbing, but when we look into these cases, when we hear these stories, I believe we can learn something that could help us save potential victims. It's been too long since we've done an Ann Rule book and I think this is one of the most disturbing cases she covered. It's the story of a mother who seemed so emotionally disconnected from her children that when they got in the way of the life she wanted, she decided they were expendable. None of us wants to think about a mother hurting their children, but it happens more often than we think. We believe certain people can always be trusted - moms, police officers, teachers, coaches, pastors. That's one big reason that I'm getting ready to release my latest book “In God We Trust - Everyone Else Gets a Background Check”. It's a very practical look at why we trust too easily, who we trust too easily, and how we can learn to trust properly. Now let's take a look at another mom who police say murdered her own child, and they need your help to find her. You may remember the story from the Old Testament where the people of Israel ask the prophet Samuel to find them a king. Things had not gone so well in the era of the judges, so they decided having a king like other nations would be a good idea. So, guided by God, Samuel gives the people a tall, handsome man named Saul to be their king. Unfortunately, even though Saul looks the part of a great leader, he has some major character flaws. He disobeys God's commands, and so God says the people must have a new king, a humble and obedient king. God tells Samuel to go to Bethlehem to find a man named Jesse. Samuel saw Jesse's oldest son Eliab, he assumed that this was the man destined to be Israel's new king. But let's read God's response: But the Lord said to Samuel, “Don't judge by a man's face or height, for this is not the one. I don't make decisions the way you do! Men judge by outward appearance, but I look at a man's thoughts and intentions.” 1 Samuel 16:7 TLB Predators try so hard to take on the appearance of someone who is trustworthy and full of good works. They want to impress us. We have to remember that we don't know what a person is really like from the way they look, the words they say, or how awesome they seem on social media. We need to learn to assess a person's trustworthiness by looking, as God does, by what's on the inside. I know you're probably thinking that we can't know a person's thoughts and intentions the way God does, and you're right. But all of us let who we really are leak out in things we say and do. You can know what's on my heart by watching closely what I say and what I do. Little inconsistencies aren't to be seen as fluke things, but as my true nature leaking out! It drives me crazy when a high profile criminal is caught and the media starts interviewing neighbors. These people will say that the guy seemed so nice, there were no red flags, then they will say “but”, and describe things they explained away because they didn't want to think the worst. Those red flags are the true nature of someone leaking out! This is so important so I will say it again - Red flags in things people say or do are not exceptions to their character, they are expressions of their character. When someone shows you and tells you who they are, BELIEVE THEM. And if they are a caregiver for someone, please alert the authorities and have them do a welfare check. We have to look out for the vulnerable people God has placed in our community. On October 8th, 2000, 44-year-old Chris Northon is camping in Oregon with his wife, 38-year-old Liysa, and their 3-year-old son. After four years of marriage, Chris and Liysa were no longer happy. Both Chris and Liysa hoped that this weekend getaway could help mend their relationship's troubles. But when Liysa confronts Chris about his poor behavior and substance abuse, the couple trade harsh words—and blows. That night, Liysa uses her .38-caliber revolver to shoot Chris in the head while he is asleep in his sleeping bag. At trial, Liysa reveals that Chris abused her, physically and emotionally, for years. But when unexpected evidence appears mid-trial, Liysa goes to prison for 12 years with a plea deal. Controversy is sparked years later when prolific true crime author Ann Rule covers the case in her best-selling novel Heart Full of Lies. In episode 219, Jac and Alexis explore the tangled web of lies surrounding Chris Northon's death.
