Dean Hall was dying. Weakened by two types of cancer and emotionally gutted by grief, he found himself at the end of what medicine and mindset could offer. But in the depths of despair, Dean rediscovered a childhood dream—and made a radical decision to live, not just survive. In this deeply moving episode, Ginny Yurich talks with Dean about the healing power of purpose, the wildness of adventure, and the surprising ways nature showed up as an unexpected partner in his return to life. Dean's story—captured in his book The Wild Cure—isn't just about beating cancer or swimming 187 miles of Oregon's Willamette River. It's about waking up, finding meaning, and remembering that nature is not just scenery—it's a lifeline. With wisdom forged through suffering and triumph, Dean shares how rivers, forests, and even cold water became allies in healing both his body and spirit. This episode is a profound reminder that it's never too late to reclaim joy, pursue a long-forgotten dream, and let the outdoors lead the way home. ** Learn more about Dean and all her has to offer here Get your copy of The Wild Cure here Learn more about your ad choices. This is the third effort filed under the self-describing pseudonym, with the recipe being a long field recording accompanied by a number of musical movements comprising a greater whole. Put simply, it's just meant to be more dreamy. For this outing we have left the Columbia River, and the Wapato Valley (aka Portland Basin), where we have settled in for a few months. (But barely, we're not officially done here. There's two more installments over the next two weeks.) Oaks Bottom is a mixed wetland on the Willamette River in Portland, about 10 river miles from the Columbia confluence, and the southern edge of Wapato Valley. In some ways it approximates what the Columbia shorelines would have looked like 100 years ago: marshy wonderlands where cottonwood trees thrive. Oaks Bottom was my go-to destination for many years. I became quite familiar with the soundscape over time. I can usually identify the wildlife there by ear. If listening back to a recording I can tell you what season it was made, down to the month. My favorite season: Spring. It's the best. In this recording we hear the Black-headed Grosbeak. Instantly, that places it in the likely realm of May or June. The sound of the cottonwood trees is another hint. In May, the leaves are young and pliant. By June they are big and broad, clattering in the breezes. Here is an excellent video on the sound of Cottonwood leaves.Even in winter cottonwood leaves continue have their own sound—underfoot. Where other leaves—maples for example—now have the consistency of tissue paper on the moist ground, cottonwoods scrape against each other like coated cardstock valentines. Scrunch, scrunch. Scriff, Skrich.I think that's it for this one. Cottonwoods Suite is available on all streaming platforms (Spotify, Apple, Tidal, Amazon, YouTube…) Friday, December 6th. I hope you can spend some quiet time with it.

In 2022, Portland residents voted to overhaul the city’s form of government. That includes using ranked choice voting to expand the number of seats on city council from five to 12. Another major change is the creation of four geographic districts in the city. Voters within each district will now elect three candidates to represent them on the new council. Thirty registered candidates are competing in District 4, which includes all of Portland west of the Willamette River, including Downtown, the Pearl District, Multnomah and Hillsdale neighborhoods. It also contains the inner southeast neighborhoods of Sellwood-Moreland, Eastmoreland, Reed and Ardenwald.  On Oct. 24, “Think Out Loud” convened a D4 candidates forum at John’s Marketplace in Multnomah Village. We invited the 13 candidates with the largest number of individual donors who contributed to their campaigns. They include: Eli Arnold, Olivia Clark, Lisa Freeman, Mitch Green, Chris Henry, Ben Hufford, Chad Lykins, Tony Morse, Stanley Penkin, Moses Ross, Sarah Silkie,  Bob Weinstein and Eric Zimmerman.

Low-head dams likely wouldn't catch the attention of a person floating down a river on a paddle board or inner tube. The unassuming structures can have drops as low as 1 foot, appearing as little more than a smooth bump in otherwise calm waters. But the continuous motion of water over the top of the dam creates a dangerous vortex at its base. As recently reported in the Register Guard, the churn can trap swimmers, kayakers and others recreating in the water, earning them the nickname “drowning machines.” Haleigh Kochanski covers breaking news and public safety for the Register-Guard. The Ross Island Lagoon, which sits in the center of the four-island complex known as Ross Island, is a byproduct of decades of mining. In addition to industrial purposes, the lagoon also has a long history of being used recreationally and provides habitat for a variety of vulnerable plant and animal species. In 2015, researchers began to see cyanobacterial blooms in the lagoon. Cyanobacteria is a type of bacteria which can pose a serious threat to the health of animals and people who come into close contact with the water. When present, it gives the water a bright green appearance.Because the lagoon is a warm, stagnant pool, it’s an ideal breeding ground for cyanobacteria. And it’s only getting warmer due to climate change. The tide from the Willamette pulls the cyanobacteria out into the river’s main flow, contaminating the rest of the water. The Oregon Health Authority routinely releases warnings urging against recreational river use during warmer seasons because of this.Since 2017, Oregon State University and the Willamette River group the Human Access Project have been working on reducing these Lagoon blooms. There is work being done by different groups to address the cyanobacterial blooms in the Ross Island Lagoon. Desirée Tullos, professor of Water Resources Engineering at Oregon State University, joins us to share more.

The Willamette River was running high and wild on the morning of Feb. 5, 1890, as Alden and Arthur Graham set out from Oregon City in their sternwheel riverboat for the daily run to Portland. They arrived in Portland in what must have been record time, dodging logs and small floating buildings along the way, and promptly canceled the return trip. It was just too dangerous to even try charging into the teeth of all the fast-moving debris. But after they arrived, they learned that theirs was the only riverboat between Willamette Falls and the Portland bridges — and there were some things floating down the river that could potentially damage or even destroy those bridges. So, back out into the torrent they went, to the rescue. (Oregon City, Clackamas County; 1890s) (For text and pictures, see https://offbeatoregon.com/1912e.steamboat-culture-graham-line.html)

I always forget Rose Festival until it kicks in my door like an aggressive repo man just before summer.  It is an annual civic festival held during the month of June in Portland, Oregon. It is organized by the volunteer non-profit Portland Rose Festival Foundation with the purpose of promoting the Portland region. It includes three separate parades, along with a number of other activities, including plant-based crimes. You may be tempted after seeing the beautiful floats covered in flowers and seeds to take a trip up to the Portland International Test Rose Gardens. I highly recommend that you do, as it is a very lovely area and one of my favorite spots in the city. What you should not do is take any cutting implement up to take the roses. It is frowned upon. One of the highlights of the Rose Festival is the choosing of the Royal Court. Each local high school has a contest to determine their princess for the Rose Court, and then a queen is chosen from those young women. It is a pretty neat tradition...but I just remember who was chosen from my school my senior year, and it was a horrible choice.....but I digress. Waterfront Park becomes a giant fun center with carnival games, rides, and stages. It is loud, full of an interesting cross section of the city, and full of the smells of food that will clog your arteries. I do not make it down there enough, but when I do go, I still find it very fun. The prices are insane, but that is what you get. My favorite part of the entire festival is the fireworks. This is usually what kicks everything off. They are held in the Willamette River, which runs through the center of the city. Crowds gather on both sides of the river to watch the show in the air above them. And they rarely, if ever, cause people to become radioactive. Well, I hope you learned something about our wonderful city and it's namesake festival. Nearly 30 years ago, Metro purchased a 27-acre property located on the east side of the Willamette River near the St. John’s neighborhood in North Portland. Before it can become a nature park with trails and beach access, Willamette Cove first needs to be cleaned up to remove toxic metals, dioxins and other pollutants lingering in the soil and water after decades of  heavy industrial activity at the site. As planning for the cleanup gets underway, Metro recently asked residents for their opinions on what features and amenities they want included in the nature park. Joining us to talk about the outreach efforts ramping up and the vision for Willamette Cove is Cory Eldridge, a communications specialist at Metro and the community engagement lead on the project.

David has spent countless hours learning many different techniques to target Chinook salmon throughout the Pacific NW. He also LOVES taking time to teach others how to be successful chasing fish around, you can reach out to David to get on one of his guided education trips, via his website. www.Fishingwithdavidpyle.com In this episode, we really dive into depth about targeting these fish on the willamette river system, and the different techniques in which you can do so. We also talk about David's guide business, and how his guided education trips differ from a traditional guided fishing trip. Last, we touch a little bit on using your electronics, to help become more successful in these fisheries. We really hope you guys enjoy this episode, almost as much as we enjoyed filming it for you. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Beware unfinished bridges, published by Adam Zerner on May 12, 2024 on LessWrong. This guy don't wanna battle, he's shook 'Cause ain't no such things as halfway crooks 8 Mile There is a commonly cited typology of cyclists where cyclists are divided into four groups: 1. Strong & Fearless (will ride in car lanes) 2. Enthused & Confident (will ride in unprotected bike lanes) 3. Interested but Concerned (will ride in protected bike lanes) 4. No Way No How (will only ride in paths away from cars) I came across this typology because I've been learning about urban design recently, and it's got me thinking. There's all sorts of push amongst urban designers for adding more and more bike lanes. But is doing so a good idea? Maybe. There are a lot factors to consider. But I think that a very important thing to keep in mind are thresholds. It will take me some time to explain what I mean by that. Let me begin with a concrete example. I live in northwest Portland. There is a beautiful, protected bike lane alongside Naito Parkway that is pretty close to my apartment. It basically runs along the west side of the Willamette River. Which is pretty awesome. I think of it as a "bike highway". But I have a problem: like the majority of people, I fall into the "Interested but Concerned" group and am only comfortable riding my bike in protected bike lanes. However, there aren't any protected bike lanes that will get me from my apartment to Naito Parkway. And there often aren't any protected bike lanes that will get me from Naito Parkway to my end destination. In practice I am somewhat flexible and will find ways to get to and from Naito Parkway (sidewalk, riding in the street, streetcar, bus), but for the sake of argument, let's just assume that there is no flexibility. Let's assume that as a type III "Interested but Concerned" bicyclist I have zero willingness to be flexible. During a bike trip, I will not mix modes of transportation, and I will never ride my bike in a car lane or in an unprotected bike lane. With this assumption, the beautiful bike lane alongside Naito Parkway provides me with zero value.[1] Why zero? Isn't that a bit extreme? Shouldn't we avoid black and white thinking? Surely it provides some value, right? No, no, and no. In our hypothetical situation where I am inflexible, the Naito Parkway bike lane provides me with zero value. 1. I don't have a way of biking from my apartment to Naito Parkway. 2. I don't have a way of biking from Naito Parkway to most of my destinations. If I don't have a way to get to or from Naito Parkway, I will never actually use it. And if I'm never actually using it, it's never providing me with any value. Let's take this even further. Suppose I start off at point A, Naito Parkway is point E, and my destination is point G. Suppose you built a protected bike lane that got me from point A to point B. In that scenario, the beautiful bike lane alongside Naito Parkway would still provide me with zero value. Why? I still have no way of accessing it. I can now get from point A to point B, but I still can't get from point B to point C, point C to point D, D to E, E to F, or F to G. I only receive value once I have a way of moving between each of the six sets of points: 1. A to B 2. B to C 3. C to D 4. D to E 5. E to F 6. F to G There is a threshold. If I can move between zero pairs of those points I receive zero value. If I can move between one pair of those points I receive zero value. If I can move between two pairs of those points I receive zero value. If I can move between three pairs of those points I receive zero value. If I can move between four pairs of those points I receive zero value. If I can move between five pairs of those points I receive zero value. If I can move between six pairs of those points I receive positive value. I only receiv...

You’ve probably heard about fish ladders and other mechanisms to help adult salmon get upstream past dams. It turns out that on the Willamette River, more than half of baby salmon die on their way downstream past the dams trying to get to the ocean. The US Army Corps of Engineers, the federal agency that operates the dams, has proposed building massive and costly fish collectors to try to save a fish population increasingly in danger of extinction. But reporting by OPB and Propublica casts doubt on the plan, as many outside the Corps consider the collectors unnecessary and unlikely to succeed. We hear more from Tony Schick, OPB investigative reporter and editor, who reported on salmon and Willamette River dams in collaboration with Propublica.

In today's episode I have the pleasure of welcoming back Dean Hall (www.thewildcureway.com) to the show. Dean and I explore how movement may help harness the superpowers of the brilliant ADHD mind.    About Dean   Dean has been a licensed clinical therapist and coach for over 30 years. Astonishingly, in that time he has conducted over fifty thousand face-to-face, one-hour sessions.    Besides being a best-selling author, and highly sought-after speaker, Dean is also a two-time cancer survivor, widower and two-time world record-setting extreme distance swimmer. He is the first person to swim the entire 187-mile length of Oregon's longest river, the Willamette River, (which he did as an active cancer patient) in 2014, and Ireland's longest river, the River Shannon (180 miles), in 2017.    This much time spent immersed in the flow of mighty rivers has changed Dean's life in many dynamic and miraculous ways. His Willamette River swim threw Dean into radical remission unexpectedly healing his leukemia without chemo or radiation while easing his trauma and grief from losing his wife fifteen days before their thirtieth anniversary. Buoyed by his firsthand experience of the healing power of nature when his lymphoma worsened and doctors once again pushed him to do chemo and radiation Dean chose to try Forest Bathing first. Dr. Qing Li's research on the proven efficacy of time spent in forests and how it boosted NK (Natural Killer) cells and the immune system by over two-hundred and fifty times for a period of two weeks gave Dean the courage to decide instead for a weekly regimen of forest bathing instead. In May of 2015, he started spending all day once a week forest bathing deep in the Mt. Hood Wilderness and by March of 2016 he was declared cancer free.   These gifts of natural healing pushed Dean to make it his organization, The Wild Cure Way, whose mission is to encourage the world to get out of concrete jungles, manmade boxes and away from digital devices and dive into wild waterways and venture into deep forests as a form of authentic deep healing and, oddly enough, environmental protection. He believes it's impossible to swim in wild waters or amble through ancient forests without falling in love with them and like Jacque Cousteau used to say, “You protect what you love.”

Vancouver is a city in Clark County in southwest Washington state. It is situated close to the Willamette River's confluence with the Columbia River on the North Bank of the Columbia. Chinook Indians were the original inhabitants of the area. George Vancouver, a British explorer who charted the Northwest coast in 1792, is honored by the city's name. Vancouver, as the oldest non-Indian settlement in the Pacific Northwest, probably takes greater pride in its past than most other cities. The 1849 United States Army Barracks, including Officer's Row, the shipways from the World War II Kaiser shipyards, the 1825 Hudson's Bay Company's Fort Vancouver, and Pearson Field—the oldest continuously operational airfield in the West—are all within a short stroll from the city center. Listen now to learn more about one of the oldest settlements in the Evergreen StateA special thank you goes out to Al Hirsch for providing the music for the podcast, check him out on YouTube.Find merchandise for the podcast now available at:     https://washington-history-by-jon-c.creator-spring.comIf you enjoy the podcast and would like to contribute, please visit: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/EvergreenpodIf you have any questions, episode ideas you'd like to see explored, or just have a general comment, please reach out at Historyoftheevergreenstatepod@gmail.comTo keep up on news for the podcast and other related announcements, please like and follow:https://www.facebook.com/HistoryoftheevergreenstatepodcastFind the podcast over on Instagram as well: @HISTORY_EVERGREENSTATEPODCASTYou can also find the podcast over on YouTube:http://www.youtube.com/@historyoftheevergreenstatepodThank you for listening to another episode of the History of the Evergreen State Podcast!

Ever heard of a pirate hijacking a Fire and Rescue boat in Portland for a 40-mile joyride? Buckle up for a thrilling journey as we unravel this audacious tale. We dissect the electrifying series of events – a suspect braving the Willamette River, commandeering a rescue vessel, and creating a spectacle that ended with law enforcement towing the commandeered vessel back to land. We probe into the suspect's ludicrous ambitions, the questions around potential substance use, and the shocking implications if the suspect had reached the open ocean. But the story doesn't end there. We shift gears to explore the broader world of Portland's waterway bandits and criminal activities along the Willamette River. It's a wild side of Portland that offers million-dollar views of riverside condos and raises questions about the inspiration such audacious acts could provide to others. As we consider the environmental and financial fallout of boat theft and sinking, we also wonder why theft seems to be less prevalent in locales like Seattle. So, set sail with us on this remarkable exploration of maritime crimes in Portland. Get ready for a deep dive into the criminal mind and the brazen thefts that occur on Portland waters.Support the show

In this episode of Beat Check with The Oregonian, environmental reporter Gosia Wozniacka talks to the executive director of Willamette Riverkeeper Travis Williams. His Oregon City-based nonprofit, which aims to protect and restore the river, had spent the past two decades cleaning up trash up and down the watershed. But since the onset of the pandemic in 2020, the organization had watched massive and unprecedented amounts of garbage accumulate in and along the river as a rising number of people experiencing homelessness set up tents, shacks and makeshift cabins along the shore.  Learn more about your ad choices. Today, we're looking into the very real possibility of a public passenger ferry operating on the Willamette River. Susan Bladholm, founder and president of Friends of Frog Ferry, says most major river and coastal cities already have functioning ferry systems built into their public transportation. But how much is this going to cost? Where is the money coming from? And does Portland really need a ferry? Correction: Our guest flubbed the cost of bringing new electric busses to Portland. They actually tend to cost less than a new ferry would; around $1 million dollars. Thanks to our listener Mike who pointed out! Who would you like to hear on City Cast Portland? SCARED TO DEATH IS EXPLICIT IN EVERY WAY. PLEASE TAKE CARE WHILE LISTENING. Dan's first story is set in Portland, Oregon, centered around Portland's underground “shanghai tunnels.” There are miles of tunnels underneath Portland that connect it to the Willamette River - once used to transport goods in and out of the city and to ocean going ships. These tunnels also, SUPPOSEDLY, were used for human trafficking. Sailors getting “Shanghai'd” - kidnapped and forced to work at sea. Women getting forced into prostitution and shipped around the world. Some think this stuff never actually happened in Portland, others think it was frequent. Let's see what is out there. Then for Dan's second tale, the Cherokee legend of The Raven Mocker - a strange, evil spirit and the most feared of the Cherokee witches.  Lynze has two stories for you this week! First off, a tale that is sad but also heartwarming. A mother may have made a call from the great beyond to save the life of her child. Then a shared haunting, a screaming nun and a dorm room that just doesn't feel quite right. SUMMER CAMP!!!! CAMP!!! Wet Hot Bad Magic Summer is a GO!
