Hanged for piracy and murder, sea captain William Kidd was executed in Wapping on 23rd May, 1701. From the gallows he proclaimed to the large assembled crowd that he was innocent of the crimes, as he was a licensed privateer. The vessel he'd captured, the Quedagh Merchant, was indeed sailing under a ‘French pass' - though the documents that prove this lay unearthed until the 20th century. His trial was used by the governing Tory party as a political opportunity to embarrass his Whig sponsors, and he was convicted on all counts. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly explain what happened to his body after his botched hanging; reveal the extraordinary monetary value of his plunder; and explain how, despite his established prowess as a seaman, he became seen as a public enemy… Further Reading: • ‘Biography of Captain William Kidd, Scottish Pirate' (ThoughtCo, 2019): https://www.thoughtco.com/captain-william-kidd-2136225 • ‘The sacrifice of Captain Kidd' (HistoryExtra, 2011): https://www.historyextra.com/period/stuart/the-sacrifice-of-captain-kidd/ • ‘Accidental Pirate' (National Geographic, 2008): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4aGvWzFoko Love the show? Barker, Christine Daigle, Jena Brown, and Kevin Tumlinson as they discuss the week's entertainment news, including stories about A Million Lives Book Festival, Findaway's INaudio, and Agatha Christie. Then, stick around for a chat with Joe Abercrombie!Joe Abercrombie was born in Lancaster, England, on the last day of 1974. He was educated at the stiflingly all-boy Lancaster Royal Grammar School, where he spent much of his time playing video games, rolling dice, and drawing maps of places that don't exist. He went on to Manchester University to study Psychology. The dice and the maps stopped, but the video games continued. Having long dreamed of single-handedly redefining the fantasy genre, he started to write an epic trilogy based around the misadventures of thinking man's barbarian Logen Ninefingers. The result was pompous toss, and swiftly abandoned.Joe then moved to London, lived in a slum with two men on the borders of madness, and found work making tea for minimum wage at a TV Post-Production company. Two years later he left to become a freelance film editor, and has worked since on a range of documentaries, awards shows, music videos, and concerts for artists ranging from Barry White to Coldplay. This job gave him lots of time off, and realising that he needed something more useful to do than playing video games, in 2001 he sat down once again to write an epic fantasy trilogy based around the misadventures of thinking man's barbarian Logen Ninefingers. This time, having learned not to take himself too seriously in the six years since the first effort, the results were a great deal more interesting. With heroic help and support from his family the first volume, The Blade Itself, was completed in 2004. Following a heart-breaking trail of rejection at the hands of several of Britain's foremost literary agencies, The First Law trilogy was snatched up by Gillian Redfearn of Gollancz in 2005 in a seven-figure deal (if you count the pence columns). A year later The Blade Itself was unleashed on an unsuspecting public. It now has publishers in thirty countries. The sequels, Before They are Hanged and Last Argument of Kings were published in 2007 and 2008, when Joe was a finalist for the John W. Campbell award for best new writer. Best Served Cold, a standalone book set in the same world, was published in June 2009, and a second standalone, The Heroes, came in January 2011 and made no. 3 on the Sunday Times Hardcover Bestseller List. A third standalone, Red Country, was both a Sunday Times and New York Times Hardcover Bestseller in October 2012.The first part of his viking-inspired Shattered Sea series for young and old adults, Half a King, came out in July 2014, when it won the Locus award for best young adult novel. The other two books, Half the World, and Half a War, followed in January and July 2015.His collection of short fiction, Sharp Ends was published in 2016. A new trilogy set in the world of the First Law, The Age of Madness, began in September 2019 with A Little Hatred. The Trouble with Peace followed in September 2020, and the final part, The Wisdom of Crowds in September 2021. The first book in a new series, The Devils, will publish in May 2025.Joe now lives in Bath with his wife, Lou, his daughters Grace and Eve, and his son Teddy. He spends most of his time writing edgy yet humorous fantasy novels…
Send us a textArnie and Fred begin this episode by looking at what the Bible says about suicide. We note that everyone faces some kind of discouragement from time to time. If we consider it to be unfixable, our thinking may lead us to hopelessness and despair and ultimately to harmful behaviors and even to suicide. The Bible records a number of people who resorted to this. We begin by noting 5 individuals. The first is Abimelech who was engaged in battle and became disabled. The Bible record of this is in Judges chapter 9. We talk about that situation. King Saul was battling the Philistines and was wounded by their archers according to 1 Samuel 31. We look at that record. Next, we note that David's son, Absalum engaged in a rebellion against his father who was the king. We talk about what happened to his advisor Ahithophel as well as himself according to the Bible record. The last of the Old Testament individuals we look at are about a hundred years later. Those involved are Baasha, who was king of Israel for a short period, Zimri who was commander of half the kings chariot company and Omri who was appointed commander of the Army. We discuss this at length. The last individual we note is Judas Iscariot who most are familiar with. Nevertheless, we review his suicide. With that background, we begin a discussion of how faith can defeat suicide. This will be the primary focus of the remaining episodes on suicide. Take about 30-minutes to listen in on our discussion. Have your Bible handy so you can verify what we are saying. There is a transcript of this Buzzsprout episode provided for your convenience.

Note/Correction: Investigator Slater kept referring to A Cruel Love: The Ruth Ellis Story as a Netflix series, but it actually aired on BritBox. She's very sorry. Ruth Ellis was a 28-year-old nightclub hostess and mother who, in 1955, became the last woman to be executed in the United Kingdom. Her crime: the premeditated shooting of her abusive lover, David Blakely, outside a London pub in broad daylight. The trial was swift and the verdict was inevitable: Ruth Ellis was to hang for her crime. Despite mounting public sympathy and clear evidence of sustained physical and emotional abuse, the legal system refused to consider her mental state or the context of her actions. Ruth's execution sparked national outrage and helped ignite a decades-long movement toward the abolition of capital punishment in Britain. Her story remains one of the most haunting examples of how justice can fail those trapped by violence, gender, and a system determined to punish and condemn, rather than understand and help. So, while this is the story of Ruth Ellis, it is, at its core, about so much more. James tells the true story of a man who escaped the hangman's noose, not once, not twice and not four times either. The life of John "Babbacombe" Lee was made into a silent film in 1912. Smash-cut to 2025, and James is retelling the tale with his usual cinematic panache. Yes, this is a James Shakeshaft Joint starring your two favourite Loreboys. This is the fourth in a series of six episodes on the physicist Albert Einstein. Hitler's rise to power puts Albert Einstein in harms' way as rising antisemitism drives him from his newly acquired house in the outskirts of Berlin. Rather than using his fame to flee, Einstein regularly speaks out against Nazi rule, eventually resulting in a dossier being published with Albert Einstein listed as the number one target. Welcome to the seventeenth of our eighteen shows celebrating the centenary of the Paris edition of Hemingway's book of vignettes, in our time.Hemingway captures a scene out of the American newspapers, the execution by hanging of an Italian-American mobster, Sam Cardinella. We discuss Hemingway's career-long treatment of executions and the behavior of those facing death, along with the detached behavior of those administering punishment. We parse out the discrepancy of a vocabulary word, and we also analyze the eventual placement of this episode into the dreamscape of a young Nick Adams. The power of this chapter represents one of the great achievements of this book.Join us as we explore in our time before it became In Our Time!

Welcome to my Memorizing Tarot Card Audio Podcast, where I discuss strategies to learn and memorize Tarot cards. Today's episode is your three-minute lesson on the Reversal of the Hanged Man card. Why an audio course=================The purpose of this audio podcast is to help reinforce key messages by audio, while you clean, exercise, mow your lawn, or drive great distances. There is no charge for this content, and it is intended to provide short, snappy microlearning to help beginners keep practicing and reinforcing the learning. The best way to learn Tarot cards, is to keep practicing working with the cards.Rider Waite Tarot Card Deck=======================I learned how to read cards on the Rider Waite Tarot Deck and the instructor I had said its easiest to have everyone on the same deck when explaining the symbolism. With time, I was able to transfer that knowledge to other decks. If you are a beginner at learning Taro, below are some links to the Rider Waite Tarot Deck to follow along if you need a set of cards. I earn a small referral commission from these links from Amazon.Rider Waite Tarot Deck - USA Link: https://amzn.to/3TW5y0iRider Waite Tarot Deck - Canada Link: https://amzn.to/3YcTwlRRider Waite Tarot Deck - UK Link: https://amzn.to/4eyRUIMRider Waite Tarot Deck - Australia link: https://amzn.to/3ZRB1EwAbout Carrie and @QuickLearnQuests =============================== Ihave been reading Tarot cards for 30 years for fun. I took a two and a half day course, and I was so excited to be able to take the mystery out of getting readings done for myself, and to be able to do them myself. We also have social media channels, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and all major podcast distributors such as Spotify, Apple, Audible and many others under the handle @quickLearnQuests. I am focusing mostly on my podcasts and YouTube at the moment, but I will expand into more social media more consistently when I find my feet. Here is my YouTube Channel video for interpreting cards in Three Card Spreads: https://youtu.be/P8En-8-8njk?si=7LIlOsFv9pNZ9iK7 Here is the transcript: Welcome to the"Memorizing Tarot Cards" podcast, your three-minute lessons on learning and memorizing each card using symbolism. I use the Rider Waite Tarot, but you can view the card while you listen using your own Tarot card deck or a computer. Today, we're exploring the Hanged Man card, focusing on reversals. Let's start with the divine meaning of the card and then its meaning when reversed. The Hanged Man upright represents surrender, a shift in perspective, and the importance of taking time to pause and reflect. It's about stepping back and allowing the natural flow of life to reveal the answers. When The Hanged Man appears reversed, however, this energy is blocked. It often suggests resistance to change, impatience, or a feeling of being stuck without seeing the purpose of the delay. The reversed Hanged Man points to a struggle with letting go or trusting the process. It can indicate that you're holding onto control or resisting a shift in perspective that could bring clarity and growth. So, what happens when The Hanged Man appears in a reading? When The Hanged Man reversed appears in a reading, it's a sign to examine where resistance is showing up in your life. This card suggests that now is the time to surrender and allow things to unfold naturally, rather than forcing outcomes. It may also indicate that you're feeling stagnant or uninspired. The reversed Hanged Man asks you to explore what might be keeping you stuck and to consider whether a change in perspective could help you move forward. So, what is the best way to memorize the Hanged Man card in reverse? Tying the card to a personal experience helps me remember it. For example, my reversed Hanged Man card moment was during a time when I had a feeling that layoffs were coming in my employee role. I was frantically trying to get in front of it. For example, I went to Employment Services to find out what options I had if I was laid off. I was also applying on any role I thought I had a chance with. I was selling possessions I no longer needed on Facebook Marketplace. Truly, I was acting like a loon. I was absolutely in the Hanged Man Reversed Eenergy because I was trying to take control of something that quite frankly, was out of control. The company may lay me off, or they may not. Yet, instead of allowing things to unfold naturally, I was choosing to take action instead of changing my perspective. That's all for today's Hanged Man Card Reversed episode. Remember, to memorize tarot, keep practicing tarot. 1030. This week, we look at why "hang" has two past-tense forms: "hanged" and "hung." (And why I keep messing them up!) Then we expand on why "pair" can be singular or plural. And finally we look at why we hear some words only in set phrases such as "bated breath," "throes of agony," and "to and fro."The "archaic language" segment was written by Karen Lunde, a former Quick and Dirty Tips editor who has crafted hundreds of articles on the art of writing well. She was an online education pioneer, founding one of the first online writing workshops. These days, she provides writing tips and writing coach services at HelpMeWriteBetter.com.
Two Kerry men hanged for murder over 140 years ago, are being pardoned by the President this afternoon. Sylvester Poff and James Barrett were hanged in 1883 after being convicted of the murder of Thomas Browne at his farm in Dromulton, near Currow. The Castleisland District Heritage group campaigned for a posthumous pardon for the two men who they say were victims of a miscarriage of justice. As a result of the group’s campaign, the Department of Justice engaged Dr Niamh Howlin, an expert in 19th century trial law and an Associate Professor in the Sutherland School of Law, UCD, to carry out a review. Her review of the case found the convictions to be unsafe. Jerry spoke to Johnnie Roche, chair of Castleisland District Heritage, who is travelling to Dublin for the official pardon of Poff and Barrett at Áras an Uachtaráin.
Lisa Snyder has been sentenced for the murders of her two children, Conner and Brinley Snyder. On the night of September 6, 1958, Aaron “Bud' Jenkins was stabbed to death as he slept in his barracks at the Naval base in Esquimalt on Vancouver Island here in British Columbia. A man named Leo Mantha confessed to the crime, was tried, found guilty of 1st-degree murder, and executed in 1959. He was the last person ever to be executed in British Columbia and the 3rd last to be executed in Canada. At the time, executions were rare, and most Canadian death penalty verdicts were commuted to life in prison. After revisiting the crime, the consensus among experts today is that anyone else would have been charged with manslaughter or 2nd-degree murder, and not 1st-degree murder. So why do Leo Mantha hang? The fact that Leo Mantha was gay was the only factor that made him stand out at the time of the crime. Was his a hanging by homophobia?
