In this episode I look at the connections and distinctions between Aquinas and Aristotle in Ernest Fortin's essay Aquinas. I focus on the four cardinal virtues and the different between natural law and human law.
The official story has Lee Harvey Oswald firing three shots from a sixth-floor window, yet the witnesses on the stairs never saw him flee, the paraffin test on his cheek came back clean, and J. Edgar Hoover himself admitted the voice on the Oswald tape from Mexico City belonged to another man.EPISODE BLOG PAGE (includes sources): https://weirddarkness.com/ConspiracyInDallasREAD or DOWNLOAD the full transcript of this episode: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/2p8hjttrFEATURED STORIES IN THIS EPISODE: Was there a conspiracy to murder President John F. Copyright ©2026, Weird Darkness.Originally aired: November 28, 2021Weird Darkness host Darren Marlar moves from the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in Dallas to a phantom black dog in the English county of Dorset, the murder and dismemberment of a retired sea captain on a quiet island in Washington's San Juan archipelago, and the 1901 killing of a young woman in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, whose spirit is said to still walk her family home.It opens in Dealey Plaza on November 22, 1963, where President John F. Kennedy was shot and the Warren Commission, headed by Judge Earl Warren, concluded in 1964 that ex-Marine Lee Harvey Oswald fired three shots alone from the sixth floor of the Texas School Book Depository. Eyewitnesses undercut that account from the start: Arnold Rowland saw two men at the window minutes earlier, one holding a rifle and neither matching Oswald, while secretaries Victoria Adams and Sandra Styles and caretaker Jack Dougherty never saw Oswald flee down the only staircase he could have used. The episode dismantles Arlen Specter's single-bullet theory — the claim that Commission Exhibit 399 passed through Kennedy's neck and inflicted five separate wounds on Governor John Connally before turning up nearly pristine on a Parkland Hospital stretcher — a conclusion Connally and his wife Nellie both rejected and Abraham Zapruder's home film contradicts on timing. Oswald's negative paraffin test, his suspicious 1959 defection to the Soviet Union and fluent Russian, his leafleting against the Fair Play for Cuba Committee alongside FBI-linked investigator Guy Banister, and a Mexico City impersonation so plain that J. Edgar Hoover told President Lyndon Johnson the recorded voice and surveillance photograph did not match the man in custody all steer the evidence away from a lone gunman. The thread ends with Dallas nightclub owner Jack Ruby, whose out-of-state mob contacts spiked twenty-fivefold before he shot Oswald on live television and whose 1965 hint that the truth would never surface still shadows the Mannlicher-Carcano rifle that remains the strongest piece against the accused. From there the tone turns to folklore and a listener's firsthand sighting of Black Shuck, the spectral black dog reported for centuries across Suffolk, Cambridgeshire, and East Anglia and long treated as an omen of coming disaster. Camping alone beside a medieval moat near Raoul Castle in East Dorset, he watched the dark shape of a large dog settle on the far embankment and stare back at him, then rise and dissolve into nothing as every nearby sound of wildlife cut out, leaving him zipped inside his tent until morning.Next comes the disappearance of Rolf Neslund, an 83-year-old retired sea captain who in 1978 drove a 550-foot freighter into the West Seattle Bridge before retreating into a drink-soaked marriage on Lopez Island in Washington's San Juan Islands. When Rolf vanished in August 1980, his wife Ruth insisted he had flown home to Norway, yet his prescriptions went unfilled, his American and Norwegian bank accounts went untouched, and no Christmas card reached his relatives that December. In 1982 Ruth's brother told police she had confessed that on August 8, 1980, a second brother held Rolf down while she shot him twice in the head, after which the body was dismembered in the bathtub, burned in a backyard barrel, and scattered on the manure pile. A search turned up replaced carpet over bloodstains, spatter on the ceiling, and a bloodstained .38-caliber Smith & Wesson hidden in Ruth's dresser, tying her to a killing that began as a fight over the roughly $80,000 she had quietly moved into an account bearing only her name; convicted in 1985 and sentenced to twenty years, she maintained her innocence until her death at seventy-three.The episode closes with nineteen-year-old Nell Cropsey, who walked onto the front porch of her family's Elizabeth City, North Carolina home with her suitor Jim Wilcox on the night of November 20, 1901, and was never seen alive again. Her body surfaced in the Pasquotank River on December 27, her death caused by a violent blow to the left temple, and Wilcox — the son of the local sheriff, known for a fierce temper — was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to thirty years before Governor Thomas Walter Bickett pardoned him in 1918. Once freed, Wilcox sought out newspaper editor W.O. Saunders to reveal something so startling that Saunders began planning a book, but Wilcox killed himself with a shotgun before he could tell it, Saunders died soon afterward in a car wreck, and whatever he knew went with them. More than a century on, the former Cropsey home still answers with lights that switch on and off, doors that open by themselves, faucets that run with no hand on the tap, and a pale young woman glimpsed crossing empty rooms and gazing from an upstairs window — recognized by more than one resident as Nell, her killing never truly solved.
In this episode I return once again to the magnificent History of Political Philosophy to look at James E. Holton's essay on Cicero. I focus on the mixed regime and Cicero's conservative tendencies.
In this episode I look at Augustine's distinction between the city of God and the earthly city, as described in the History of Political Philosophy essay by Ernest L. Fortin. I focus on the disctinction between Pagan and Christian patriotism.

Send us a text After the closure of Willowbrook State School on Staten Island, rumours swirled, about the people who had been left behind, one in particular stood out, sometimes, he wielded a bloody axe, sometimes he had a hand for a hook, but no matter what version of him you had heard, his M.O was always the same- to pluck children off of the street and take them back to his dwelling. All of this seemed like lore, used to scare kids and teenagers away from staying out too late at night, that was until children, and people with cognitive disabilities started to go missing.Main source used for this case was the 2009 documentary Cropsey.Support the showIf you're interested in receiving bonus episodes, early release dates, an everything scary sticker and ‘thank you' as well as a shout out on our regular feed! Watch Us Investigate The Mars Theatre LIVE! www.patreon.com/hauntedcitypodcastAppalachia is packed with terrifying tales—but today we're lathering up the cleanest legend of them all: Soap Sally. We trace this Southern boogeywoman from mill-town wash lines and lye barrels to modern ghost tours, explore why parents warned “be home by dark… or Soap Sally will get you,” and unpack how these stories doubled as cautionary tales. Madison Timmons, Chris Soucy, and JT connect Soap Sally to wider folklore (hello, Baba Yaga), talk lye-soap chemistry and why it burns, and share a wild Thomaston, GA lead about “Goat Hill” and three ominous kettles. Plus: why villains in old tales often started as women who wouldn't conform—and what that says about the culture that created them. We're also investigating the Mars Theater on Sept 29. We'll stream ~2 hours publicly, then go all night with our Parajunkies on Patreon. Want the full hunt? Join here: Got a hometown legend (Soap Sally, Bunny Man, Cropsey—bring it on)? Send us a textHere at EBC we're no stranger to creepy campfire tales. And we love a good urban legend. But for kids growing up in Staten Island in the 80s, the spooky lore was a little too specific. Fireside tales warned of a mysterious killer named 'Cropsey', who was said to live in the tunnels under the abandoned psychiatric facility nearby, and would sneak out at night to steal children. Kids were taught to stay out of the woods, and watch out for Cropsey hiding in the shadows. It was a fun and thrilling tale, until children started disappearing. This week on EBC, we cover the truly twisted tale of Cropsey aka Andre Rand, the scariest serial killer you've never heard of. Hold your loved ones tight and stay inside folks! Happy Haunting! Show Notes: It started as a story whispered at campfires and on playgrounds. But on Staten Island, the name Cropsey became something far more terrifying—a legend that seemed to step out of the shadows and into reality. In the first half of this two-part episode of The Devil Within, we trace the origins of the Cropsey myth, from abandoned asylums to forgotten tunnels. We explore how fear took root in a community, and how a monster of folklore became linked to real-life tragedy.

In this episode I return to Strauss and Cropsey's magisterial History of Political Philosophy to examine the essay on Kant. I focus on the split between science and morality, and the contradiction formed by Kant's fundamental mistake.
Tonight we're going a little Appalachia adjacent (okay, a lot) to talk about the legend of Cropsey. Whey? To show that sometimes, there really is truth behind urban legends and folklore tales. In the case of Andre Rand, the truth was likely a little too real.

Grab your canoes and your questionable 1980s short shorts — this week, Troy and Roger head to Camp Stonewater to take on The Burning, the cult slasher that gave us Cropsey, chaos, and one seriously traumatizing raft scene. They dive into the film's underdog status in the slasher canon, Tom Savini's unforgettable gore effects, and some surprisingly layered character moments hiding beneath all the sleaze. With plenty of debate over awkward camp crushes, creepy peeping Toms, and why Glazer may be the worst, the guys explore the film's take on gender roles, toxic masculinity, and camp politics. They also unpack how The Burning blends urban legend with slasher tropes — sometimes brilliantly, sometimes not-so-subtly. It's a blood-soaked trip down memory lane, filled with tender moments, brutal kills, and just enough 80s weirdness to make you think twice about summer camp.

In this episode I review Aristotle's political and ethical premises with a focus on eudaimonia, arete, and the mixed regime, as described by Carnes Lord in Leo Strauss and Joseph Cropsey's essay collection, History of Political Philosophy.
The boogeyman of Staten Island wasn't just a story—he was real. Cropsey, the legend of a child-snatching madman lurking in the ruins of Willowbrook State School, became a chilling reality when kids began vanishing. The nightmare had a name: Andre Rand, a drifter with a dark past and ties to the infamous asylum. Convicted of kidnapping but suspected of far worse, Rand's story leaves behind more questions than answers. Was he a lone predator, or part of something even more sinister?
Ryan shares another listener ghost story from Angela to ring in the Halloween season. He then speaks with investigative filmmaker, Josh Zeman. Zeman first discusses his film, "Cropsey", a boogeyman-like figure from New York City urban legend, before segueing into the story of one Andre Rand, a convicted child kidnapper from Staten Island. Zeman journies into the underbelly as more information and clues unravel. The reality he uncovers is more terrifying than any urban legend.Zeman then transitions into a television special he created titled, "Killer Legends", in which he investigates four other deeply disturbing urban legends throughout the country and questions which came first, the urban legend or the real events? What power does storytelling have over us when it comes to reality and fantasy? Do we create the monsters in these legends? Or do they create us? It's a fascinating discussion and the perfect way to count the final days until Halloween.Follow Josh Zeman: https://x.com/joshzemanPatreon: www.patreon.com/somewhereskiesByMeACoffee: buymeacoffee.com/UFxzyzHOaQPayPal: Sprague51@hotmail.comWebsite: www.somewhereintheskies.comStore: http://tee.pub/lic/ULZAy7IY12UYouTube Channel: CLICK HERETwitch: https://www.twitch.tv/somewhereskies/videosOrder Ryan's new book: https://a.co/d/4KNQnM4Order Ryan's older book: https://amzn.to/3PmydYCTwitter: @SomewhereSkiesRead Ryan's Articles by CLICKING HEREOpening Theme Song, "Ephemeral Reign" by Per KiilstofteProduced by LIONSGATECopyright © 2024. In the shadows of the Willowbrook State School, where the myth of Cropsey evolved into a harrowing series of child disappearances, lurks a deeper, darker secret. While the urban legend of Cropsey painted a picture of a monstrous figure preying on Staten Island's vulnerable, the real horrors might trace back to clandestine activities far more sinister. Unbeknownst to the public, the chilling atmosphere and secluded nature of Willowbrook may have made it a perfect candidate for the CIA's MK-Ultra project. This covert program, aimed at developing mind control techniques, often targeted unsuspecting populations—mentally disabled children and adults secluded in institutions like Willowbrook would have been prime subjects, invisible to societal scrutiny. Andre Rand, a former orderly at Willowbrook, who later became infamous for his alleged involvement in the disappearances, might have not only been a scapegoat or a perpetrator but also a participant—or even a victim—of MK-Ultra experiments. The lack of records and the CIA's tight-lipped stance on MK-Ultra's full reach leaves a gap wide open for speculation: Was Rand conditioned or manipulated into becoming the monster he was believed to be? This shadow narrative threads together the tales of government experiments with the flesh-and-blood boogeyman of Staten Island, suggesting a conspiracy stitched deep into the fabric of this chilling historical tapestry.
Burn Baby Burn, Cropsey is burning! Who's ready for a different telling of the urban legend of Cropsey? Today we are covering another 80's camp slasher film. And the burning question is, is Jason Alexander in this movie? Yes, yes he is. Enjoy our discussion on the 1981 film, The Burning.
This episode plunges into the chilling case of Andre Rand, the man many believe to be the real-life embodiment of the terrifying Cropsey urban legend. Once a janitor at Staten Island's Willowbrook State School, Rand became the prime suspect in a series of child disappearances in the 1970s and 1980s. Was Rand truly the monster that haunted Staten Island, or did the legend of Cropsey distort the truth? Join us as we explore the disturbing story of Andre Rand, the sinister history of Willowbrook, and the eerie line where urban legend meets horrifying reality.SPONSORSbetterhelp.com/brohio
