Grab your canoes and your questionable 1980s short shorts — this week, Troy and Roger head to Camp Stonewater to take on The Burning, the cult slasher that gave us Cropsey, chaos, and one seriously traumatizing raft scene. They dive into the film's underdog status in the slasher canon, Tom Savini's unforgettable gore effects, and some surprisingly layered character moments hiding beneath all the sleaze. With plenty of debate over awkward camp crushes, creepy peeping Toms, and why Glazer may be the worst, the guys explore the film's take on gender roles, toxic masculinity, and camp politics. They also unpack how The Burning blends urban legend with slasher tropes — sometimes brilliantly, sometimes not-so-subtly. It's a blood-soaked trip down memory lane, filled with tender moments, brutal kills, and just enough 80s weirdness to make you think twice about summer camp.

But when real girls began disappearing, the community's urban legend morphed into a horrifying reality. In this episode I review Aristotle's political and ethical premises with a focus on eudaimonia, arete, and the mixed regime, as described by Carnes Lord in Leo Strauss and Joseph Cropsey's essay collection, History of Political Philosophy.
The boogeyman of Staten Island wasn't just a story—he was real. Cropsey, the legend of a child-snatching madman lurking in the ruins of Willowbrook State School, became a chilling reality when kids began vanishing. The nightmare had a name: Andre Rand, a drifter with a dark past and ties to the infamous asylum. Convicted of kidnapping but suspected of far worse, Rand's story leaves behind more questions than answers. Was he a lone predator, or part of something even more sinister?

Ryan shares another listener ghost story from Angela to ring in the Halloween season. He then speaks with investigative filmmaker, Josh Zeman. Zeman first discusses his film, "Cropsey", a boogeyman-like figure from New York City urban legend, before segueing into the story of one Andre Rand, a convicted child kidnapper from Staten Island. Zeman journies into the underbelly as more information and clues unravel. The reality he uncovers is more terrifying than any urban legend.Zeman then transitions into a television special he created titled, "Killer Legends", in which he investigates four other deeply disturbing urban legends throughout the country and questions which came first, the urban legend or the real events? What power does storytelling have over us when it comes to reality and fantasy? Do we create the monsters in these legends? Or do they create us? It's a fascinating discussion and the perfect way to count the final days until Halloween.Follow Josh Zeman: https://x.com/joshzemanPatreon: www.patreon.com/somewhereskiesByMeACoffee: buymeacoffee.com/UFxzyzHOaQPayPal: Sprague51@hotmail.comWebsite: www.somewhereintheskies.comStore: http://tee.pub/lic/ULZAy7IY12UYouTube Channel: CLICK HERETwitch: https://www.twitch.tv/somewhereskies/videosOrder Ryan's new book: https://a.co/d/4KNQnM4Order Ryan's older book: https://amzn.to/3PmydYCTwitter: @SomewhereSkiesRead Ryan's Articles by CLICKING HEREOpening Theme Song, "Ephemeral Reign" by Per KiilstofteProduced by LIONSGATECopyright © 2024. In the shadows of the Willowbrook State School, where the myth of Cropsey evolved into a harrowing series of child disappearances, lurks a deeper, darker secret. While the urban legend of Cropsey painted a picture of a monstrous figure preying on Staten Island's vulnerable, the real horrors might trace back to clandestine activities far more sinister. Unbeknownst to the public, the chilling atmosphere and secluded nature of Willowbrook may have made it a perfect candidate for the CIA's MK-Ultra project. This covert program, aimed at developing mind control techniques, often targeted unsuspecting populations—mentally disabled children and adults secluded in institutions like Willowbrook would have been prime subjects, invisible to societal scrutiny. Andre Rand, a former orderly at Willowbrook, who later became infamous for his alleged involvement in the disappearances, might have not only been a scapegoat or a perpetrator but also a participant—or even a victim—of MK-Ultra experiments. The lack of records and the CIA's tight-lipped stance on MK-Ultra's full reach leaves a gap wide open for speculation: Was Rand conditioned or manipulated into becoming the monster he was believed to be? This shadow narrative threads together the tales of government experiments with the flesh-and-blood boogeyman of Staten Island, suggesting a conspiracy stitched deep into the fabric of this chilling historical tapestry.

Burn Baby Burn, Cropsey is burning! Who's ready for a different telling of the urban legend of Cropsey? Today we are covering another 80's camp slasher film. And the burning question is, is Jason Alexander in this movie? Yes, yes he is. Enjoy our discussion on the 1981 film, The Burning.
In this episode I revisit History of Political Philosophy to look at Leo Strauss' examination of the political theory of Plato. I look at the attempts to define Justice, the viability of absolute communism, and make my first foray into Plato's theory of ideas.
In this episode I revisit Thucydides as discussed by David Bolotin in the classic History of Political Philosophy edited by Leo Strauss and Joseph Cropsey. I focus on Alcibiades, Nicias, and the Sicilian Expedition.
This episode plunges into the chilling case of Andre Rand, the man many believe to be the real-life embodiment of the terrifying Cropsey urban legend. Once a janitor at Staten Island's Willowbrook State School, Rand became the prime suspect in a series of child disappearances in the 1970s and 1980s. Was Rand truly the monster that haunted Staten Island, or did the legend of Cropsey distort the truth? Join us as we explore the disturbing story of Andre Rand, the sinister history of Willowbrook, and the eerie line where urban legend meets horrifying reality.SPONSORSbetterhelp.com/brohio
In this episode I return to Strauss and Cropsey collection, History of Political Philosophy, to focus on Alan Bloom's examination of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, the general will, and the potential conflict between nature and custom.

This is one of my favorite spooky stories, I think because it's so familiar. I am a child of the 80's and all my life I heard stories like this one. It's about a strange man who lives alone in the woods outside a foreboding mental hospital. Then neighborhood kids start disappearing and one even turns up dead. This case is also infamous because of a very specific photo that was taken of the suspect and law professors use that photo as an example as to how photos can change public opinion.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

One of the scariest documentaries in recent memory tells the legend of Cropsey through the eyes of the people who lived through the nightmare of an urban legend come to life. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, mentally handicapped children systematically started going missing on Staten Island and no one knew what was happening to them. At least, not until the police were able to track down a man named Andre Rand, a vagrant and former custodian at the Willowbrook State School, who they believed was responsible for the disappearances. Follow all the madness on social media!
