Who or what is in the room with the therapist and the client when they meet for a session? Rhys and Aaron talk about family systems, internal systems, culture, context, burdens and baggage and all the things that accompany a person into a conversation. We talk about what the client brings…and what the counselor brings! We explore what it means to say, “You've never been alone in a room with a person.” Further we explore philosophical and spiritual traditions that inform us, ponder whether or not a person is comprised of just their thoughts and body, or if we are more complex than that. We push the severe limits of a strictly materialistic worldview when attempting this most sacred of endeavors that is being present with another human. What's the problem with pornography? In common vernacular, we often talk about “porn addiction.” Can people be addicted to porn like they are to alcohol and drugs, or is it strictly a religious hang-up? Could there actually be some neurological or sociological science that says it's a bad idea? Rhys talks with Trevor Windsor about the matter, about just what the problem is, and how Pure Desire is addressing it. Along the way, we also hash out some ideas for parents about how to talk to our kids about sex. How do you grieve someone who’s not really gone…but they are? What are the wounds and burdens and schema we carry the most deeply and that affect us the most profoundly? Dr. Sophia Caudle is a licensed psychotherapist and writer who specializes in addictions, recovery, sexuality and grief. In today’s conversation, she introduces us to the concepts of Ambiguous and Original Grief. What do you think or feel first when you hear the phrase, “Be a man,” or “Be manly?” Does this inspire you to greatness? Or does this drop a heavy burden on your soul? Rhys, Jeremy, and Jacob got together one day to share stories about food and about growing up in male bodies. We talked about secular and Christian paradigms of masculinity, and some ideas that both the counseling clinic and the church could consider when guiding young boys into being young men. Along the way we compared terms of “Toxic Masculinity” to the more approachable “Limiting Masculinity.” We talked about how we feel about our feelings, and about the stories we were once told that now we tell ourselves about what is meant by being a man. I can make you believe what I want you to believe by angrily telling you how you’re wrong. Right? Wait…that’s not how people change? In the midst of a very…interesting…couple of years of politics, societal shifts, crises, biases and very polarized opinions, Rhys Pasimio and Shea Layton got together one day to talk about how people come to believe what they believe. Turns out our beliefs and decisions are not quite as logical as we thought. Also turns out that when a person faces a perspective different from their core worldview, they experience Cognitive Dissonance, which can cause anxiety and defensiveness. And wouldn’t you know it, but people are more inclined to embrace cognitive dissonance(and the resulting cognitive complexity) when the person presenting the differing view is kind and empathetic. Other fun highlights and quotes from today’s episode… “What’s really scary is that you will often find that knowing little makes it easier to fit everything you know into a coherent pattern.” Cognitive Dissonance is when a person risks believing two contradictory things at a time. When a person becomes comfortable with what they believe, their research is more about seeking affirmation then asking if there is truth in any other view. When we want to believe something, we ask CAN I believe it? THEN we look for supporting evidence. In contrast, without evidence, we ask MUST we believe it, and dismiss it as soon as we can. “Familiarity is not easily distinguished from truth.” The brain tags familiar things as good things(using dopamine!!) “A great many people think they are thinking when they are merely rearranging their prejudices,” William James All responsibility and no compassion produces broken and unhealthy people. But all compassion and no responsibility creates a different kind of dysfunction. “Being against evil does not make one good.” Ernest Hemmingway You can’t let the way a truth is abused cause you to turn from truth.. All that has happened then is you’ve accepted coercion into a lie.” - Shea “Brainwashing begins where permission to question ends.” – Shea We believe based on intuition, then analyze things to find evidence to confirm our intuition. Thus, science bows to bias. A dog wags the tail out of happiness…you can’t make a dog happy by wagging, and you can’t change people’s minds by refuting their arguments. “When people like you, the relationship keeps them from fearing your views nearly as much.” - Shea
Where do we humans go to find hope? Is it faith? Political revolution? A renewed ecosphere? A whole lot of enjoyed activities? But what happens when all of these things are compromised? What happens when the list of problems and obstacles is so much longer than the list of resources? One day, early in the Covid year, Rhys and Aaron were feeling discouraged and got together to figure out how to find hope, preserve their humanity, and forge ahead. They said things like, “We all have a voice in speaking into this new humanity that we want to be now. The old way we related isn’t working anymore.” “If there’s something we could fight for, I would hope it be that we could be open with each other and hear each other and move through the pain we’ve caused each other together.” And in the end, they learned that hope life is hard, but it’s better when we can be together. Counselors, social workers, psychiatrists and other providers frequently have the opportunity(and dare we say, obligation) to collaborate with other individuals and systems that are important to our clients. One of the most notable for many, is their faith community. How should a counselor go about coordinating care with a person’s spiritual director? Similarly, pastors, priests, and other spiritual directors frequently encounter mental health and behavioral challenges that seem to exceed their specific focus of soul care. How should a spiritual care provider go about coordinating care with a person’s mental health, behavioral, or psychiatric provider? And just to complicate things even more, how does all this change when the client in question is a child or teenager? Jared Bennett is a Protestant Youth Pastor. Rhys Pasimio is a clinical counselor. Together they explore some of the variables and considerations at play in attempting to work together to care for the whole person and the systems that surround them. They discuss their respective communities and why each should talk advantage of the resources offered by the other. Rhys Pasimio concludes his lecture series by discussing Addiction Interaction and Addictive Neuropathways. Individuals engage in different acting out behaviors for different reasons to achieve different effects, and when the behaviors and substances begin to be combined, there are nearly endless variations of pattern that follow! Along the way, he re-emphasizes that the specific behavior is secondary to the reason the person does it. Furthermore, if we want to be a helpful presence for a person caught in addiction, we must be able to suspend our own judgments. Addictions happen in clusters, and all the substances and behaviors drive the same Acting Out and Acting In cycle. Even when you get clean from one drug, there is likely a handful of other substances of behaviors. And even when you’re no longer acting out in destructive ways, you might still be Acting IN in socially acceptable ways. Rhys Pasimio outlines the concept of Addiction Interaction, as well as several ways of understanding the Acting Out/Acting In Cycle. Addiction is primarily an intimacy or bonding disorder. As a result of failed or distressed attachments, the person bonds with a substance or compulsive behavior, and the destructive behaviors follow. Spiritually speaking, what is addiction? And is there a way to understand the spiritual components of addiction other than just calling the addicted person a sinner? Rhys says the spiritual framework for addiction is both much more complex and more hopeful than condemning people in the name of God. Further, Rhys makes the case that addiction is essentially a trauma response, including dissociation. Jesus loves me, this I know…if my parents were attuned to my feelings…and if my church presented God as a secure attachment figure. Easy. Right? Well… Rhys Pasimio and Krispin Mayfield tackle the intersections, tensions, and sometimes contradictions between Attachment Science and Theological beliefs and practices typical of many American Protestant Evangelical Churches. We compare and contrast Protestant concepts of God, Sin, Love and Relationship with the same concepts viewed from perspectives of Attachment Science, and Eastern Orthodoxy. We look at how healthy attachment is formed, how healthy attachment is confused, and what counselors and churches can do differently as we nurture our people. We’re dads! We’re married! We’re healthy and educated. We even own houses! Technically we have completed society’s cis-hetero-normative script for our lives. That means we have our inner and outer lives under control and feel powerful and invulnerable and have no sign of weakness anywhere…right? Wrong! We love our families, but sometimes being a father is miserable and lonely. Our Father’s Day gift to any dad who listens is the freedom to be imperfect, vulnerable, flawed, and lonely. Believe it or not, you are more normal than you think! Our hope is that we can labor through the glorious and wonderful trials of father hood together, but making connections and asking for help, one awkward and vulnerable conversation at a time. These days things are weird and strange, says everyone. We feel disconnected, and most of us have experienced some sort of loss as a result of the Virus and Social Distancing. Many of us have been more anxious and pre-occupied. How do we manage these all encompassing and ongoing stressors? More particularly, how do those of us in Helping roles, of any sort, maintain our own center, calm, and health? Individuals in Helping Professions have long been known to be at high risk for Burnout and Compassion Fatigue and the current situation may have only heightened that risk. What should we do? Hannah Green from Second Growth Counseling joins Rhys and Ben and shares some insights and ideas for how to maintain a healthy self while still actively caring for others. Need a break from the Corona Virus? Let’s talk about culture and diversity! The counseling relationship is marked by a stark power differential that is only made starker by differences in race, class, gender, education, sexual orientation, physical ability, and many other factors. How do we consider the power differential and work for what is best for the other person, while neither dismissing their problems, nor perpetuating systemic oppression? What are the cultures to consider, and who are the vulnerable people? Aaron Kelsay shares his experience of providing addiction counseling services to clients of diverse racial and class backgrounds. We consider how to consider the impact of our Whiteness and discuss striving for a mindset of cultural humility versus trying to master cultural competency skills. Along the way, we question established treatment structures, such as the 12-Steps, that came from privilege and tend to support privilege. We advise against use of jargon without first spending time in relationship earning the right to speak. Through it all, we challenge each other, and other professionals with power to be mindful of the space they occupy, and to always seek to learn from others and be willing to grow and change. How do we respond to crisis? How do we maintain a peaceful center and making meaningful contributions to our community in the midst of our own fears? What is healthy sexuality? How do healthy sex, relationships, and intimacy factor into an abundant spiritual life? What can we reasonably expect in our sex lives, particularly as we get older? And what does the abundant life look like for people practicing long term sexual abstinence? Rhys is an Orthodox Christian, and a sex addiction counselor, and was invited to speak at an Evangelical Church about the topic of healthy sexuality in the Abundant Life. Now, the Abundant Life is Christianese for “Living to your Fullest Potential.” Since he works closely with sexual addictions, and with matters of gender and sexuality, they wanted to know his thoughts. This presented a really cool opportunity! And an interesting challenge. How to translate all the clinical verbiage and science, as well as a Sex Positive attitude, into language and a form that Evangelical listeners could hear, understand, and maybe be open to pondering further, all while being true to the Orthodox faith tradition. This conversation is the end result. The ideas presented are meant to be challenging and thought provoking while also deeply respectful of some of the most personal experiences and deeply held values that a person can have. What is Religious or Spiritual Abuse? Who does it? Who is most hurt by it? Most importantly how do we support the survivors and prevent it from happening again? Connie Baker has invested much of her personal and professional life addressing this problem in both clinical and religious settings. Recently she released the book “Traumatized by Religious Abuse: Courage, Hope, and Freedom for Survivors,” which is now available at Amazon and anywhere wonderful books are sold. Rhys and Ben caught up with Connie one chilly evening in December. We shared stories, asked questions, and together dreamed of a more trauma informed counseling profession, as well as a safer and healthier church. Where are you from? Easy question…right? But what if you lived in five different countries before you finished high school, and none of them are where you live now, and even your parents were from somewhere other than here? How do you understand the culture you are in? How do you figure out how to act in a strange new world? Do you blend in? Do you make yourself exotic and cool? Moreso, how do you understand your very own self? Welcome to the world of the TCK – the Third Culture Kid. Rhys, Ben and special guest Stephen Black explore the wide and ever-changing world of being a TCK. Stephen reflects on his own experiences growing up on (only) three continents and how that impacts his sense of self, relationships, and sense of belonging. We talk about the unique challenges that TCK’s face, and how the mindful clinician might better support them. We also talk about the particular strengths and richness that a TCK carries within them, and how their global perspectives are a gift. Addictions and Accountability by SMART Counsel
What is a friend? And where do I find them? As kids, making friends (sometimes) seems to just happen. School, sports, church, band, and other groups facilitate connection, and younger people (sometimes) seem to have less baggage in approaching a peer. As adults, relationships are not a given. Rather than facilitating connection, many aspects of society seem to actively hinder people connecting with each other in a meaningful way, and the older we get, the stronger the hindrances! How do we overcome the barriers in society as well as our own insecurities to meet people and forge meaningful connections? Rhys, Ben, and Taralynn spin some thoughts and ideas about what keeps us apart and what we can do to be together. Check out the episode and let us know what you think. Sometimes after a person goes through inpatient, IOP, individual counseling and group counseling, they still need just a little something more in order to sustain their recovery. In the absence of supportive and informed family and friends(or sometimes in spite of ill-informed family and friends) recovering individuals now have the option of connecting with a sober companion! These individuals are clinically trained, often having recovery experience of their own, but able to operate in a more flexible recovery peer/case management/therapeutic presence in the individual's daily context. Visit voyageandserenity.com to learn more! Emotional Sobriety refers to that inner work that becomes possible when a person has sustained abstinence from damaging addictive behaviors. It is the ongoing and imperfect process by which a person reconnects with their best self, their deepest values, and their highest purpose. Rhys and Josh met up with TaraLynn Rayburn for a lively discussion about Sober Companions and Emotional Sobriety. We had fun recording; we hope you enjoy listening. When a family is in conflict, what does that say about the underlying patterns of how that family operates? What are the unspoken but clearly known family rules? What has been the inter-generational impact of trauma, addiction, or stress? Who holds the power in the family, and who rescues whom? Family Systems Theory offers the clinician a multitude of new insights into how the individual functions by gaining insight into the family system in which that individual dwells. Rhys and Josh visited with Mary Jane Wilt, a local Portland therapist who specializes in family systems. An introduction to Dr. Murray Bowen and Family Systems ensued. Many new things were learned. What are the major challenges facing men and boys today? One challenge is the narrative that says, "Look perfect and put together, even if you're not." The end result is lots of men, and boys trying to become men, who don't have it all together, but are driven into isolated silence. This is neither sustainable, nor even human. This narrative hurts men, and ultimately hurts the women in their lives too. Aynsley Silva has build a practice almost exclusively on working with men. In this conversation, he and Rhys and Josh talk about the fusion of trauma, anger, unrealistic expectations, and toxic family systems. Listen along for insights and ideas on how to work with families, and especially with the angry boys. "It doesn't matter what substance a person uses. What matters is why they use it." Each addicted person has a close - much too close - relationship with the object of their addiction. Recovery and maintaining sobriety means breaking up with a close companion who, while toxic and destructive, has also been a source of comfort and security. How is a recovering person to navigate this most painful of breakups? One essential answer is Aftercare. After detox, inpatient, intensive outpatient, and even after outpatient care, recovery people need structure and support. Recovering people need other people to walk with them on their journey. Rhys and Josh talk with Michael Banis from Recovery Ways about the challenges involved in aftercare for extended sobriety, as well as the very tangible treatment resources that are available. Every individual exists in a system, and if we are not addressing the whole system, are we really helping the person at all? Understanding the whole family system is vital for any counseling work, but particularly for addiction recovery work, and especially where sex addiction and betrayal trauma are involved. Counseling through Betrayal Trauma takes a hard look at both addicted person and their wounded partners in the context of their whole family system. As counselors, social workers, and other practitioners, we have a responsibility to consider and address the whole system, in service of the individual, to the greatest extend possible. How well should we treat our clients? As well as we want to be treated? As well as they want to be treated? In accordance with the highest good possible? How do we define "Good" anyway, and when do we just need to mind our biases? Rhys and Josh team up with Collin White-Pedeaux for a lively discussion about philosophical concepts that have direct implications for our everyday clinical encounters.
