Welcome to "Parenting the Intensity!"In this podcast episode, Anouk addresses the fear and concern that many parents have about their children using drugs. She emphasizes the importance of starting prevention and planning early, especially for emotionally intense kids who may be more at risk for problematic drug use. Anouk invites Richard Capriola, a mental health and substance abuse counselor, to share his expertise on the topic. Richard highlights the need for parents to become informed about the types of drugs available and the warning signs of substance use. He also emphasizes the importance of open and honest communication with children, starting at a young age, to build trust and address any underlying emotional issues that may lead to substance use. Richard encourages parents to seek professional assessments if they suspect their child may be using drugs, as early intervention and treatment can make a significant difference.3 Key Takeaways- Early communication and trust-building with your child can effectively mitigate the risk of substance abuse later on.- Look out for warning signs such as declining grades, changes in social behavior, and unusual odors or paraphernalia at home.- Seeking professional assessments and early intervention can lead to remarkable results in addressing substance use and underlying psychological issues in children."The most important thing that you can do is start to develop open, honest communication with your child. Embarking on a personal journey of recovery from family dysfunction and substance use challenges can offer invaluable lessons. Through our effort to understand why our children are using substances, we must focus on the essential concepts of self-regulation, the impact of our parenting styles, and how we can become better parents through building up our own resilience. I offer up my own experience of learning how crucial it is to manage emotions and learn to focus on the present moment in order to create a safe emotional environment for my Family. Together, as a Siblinghood of Parents in Development, we can navigate through the storm, learn from our past, and pave the way for a healthier future for our children and us.9:35 - From Parents.com, 'What's Your Parenting Style?'12:20 - Newport Academy's, 'Resilience Toolkit'OTHER RELATED LINKS1) Authoritative Parenting: The Pros and Cons, According to a Child Psychologist2) What's Your Parenting Style?3) From the Parenting for Brain website, 'Emotional Regulation in Children | A Complete Guide' - as seen on the American Academy of Pediatrics website, and an excerpt here specific to Substance Use: A child who has poor emotion regulation skills throws tantrums constantly and puts a strain on the parent-child relationship. This can impact the climate of the whole household, including siblings or everyone around them, and lead to a negative spiral.Similarly, for friendships, kids who don't have the ability to control their big feelings have fewer social skills. They have a harder time making or keeping friends. The inability to self-regulate big emotions can lead to traits like anger, withdrawal, anxiety, or aggressive behavior. All this can snowball into further negative consequences: Children who are rejected by their peers are at increased risk of dropping out of school, delinquency, substance abuse, and antisocial behavior problems 1 . Those who are withdrawn and rejected by peers are also more likely to get bullied 2 .Thank you for listening and please visit www.siblinghoodofrecovery.com for free resources, links to organizations, groups and individuals who can offer help in the Journey of Recovery towards healing from substance use disorders. If you like this Podcast, please leave a rating on wherever you're listening. It will help to get the word out. If there is one message I can leave you with, the best you can offer your loved one battling addiction is love and a healthier you. Walk gently, my friend.

I am super excited to share my podcast with life-long friend Caroline Fenkel! Fun fact – Caroline was my 5th guest on the podcast over 5 years ago and it was one of the most downloaded episodes! Caroline (34) became sober 15 years ago and since then has made a tremendous impact in the recovery industry. Simultaneously, she also earned her master's degree from Bryn Mawr College and later earned her doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania. Over the course of her career, Caroline has worked at several national credible companies, such as Newport Academy, where they offered l lifesaving treatment for adolescents. However there was one issue that slowly began to frustrate her: 93% of the adolescent population do not have access to high acuity care – it was impossible to reach everyone that needed help when running brick and mortar facilities. There are major limitations such as insurance, transportation, limited beds, and financial barriers. As a solution, Caroline co-founded Charlie Health with Carter Barnhart and Justin Weiss over two years ago. Today they are the largest provider of virtual IOP (intensive outpatient) programs for teens, young adults, and families navigating mental health challenges. They are immediately accessible to any adolescent in need of help, given that they are virtual and accept both commercial insurance and Medicaid so that finances aren't a barrier. In addition, what separates Charlie Health from your traditional brick and mortar facilities is that rather than group patients together based on their physical location, Charlie Health customizes comprehensive treatment plans by carefully matching patients in groups of peers with similar backgrounds, preferences, and needs. It has been incredible to watch the company expand and disrupt the mental health industry. Link to Charlie Health website: https://www.charliehealth.com/

Newport Academy was founded in 2009 by Jamison Monroe for teenagers dealing with drug and alcohol addiction. Monroe had dealt with his own addiction issues and founded Newport Academy in his late 20s.The luxury rehab center offers treatment to individuals 12- to 18-years old. Newport Academy treats teens suffering from addiction and other disorders through tailor-made recovery programs. The residential rehab facility treats multiple issues including eating disorders, depression, and suicidal ideation in addition to alcohol and drug addiction. The original Academy facility is situated in Orange, California. The residential treatment center is incredibly unique as teenagers can gain fully transferrable high school credits. It allows fellows to both gain sobriety and improve their chances of graduating from high school. The original facility resides in a Spanish-style home surrounded by lush gardens. A horse stable is located on the grounds allowing residents to experience equine therapy during a stay. Newport Academy hosts a maximum of 12 fellows at one time. The luxury rehab center offers placement for six boys and six girls at a time, and segregates residents by gender to allow gender-specific treatment. Newport Academy's focus on education makes it unique compared to other teen treatment facilities. The rehab center has a sober high school with a one staff member to three student ratio. Students can attend the sober high school without attending Newport Academy's residential program. The rehab center's residents are segregated on different campuses where they receive college prep classes, high school curriculum classes, and GED lessons from fully licensed teachers. Special programming is offered by the academy's sober high school to keep students from relapsing. Newport Academy hosts 12 residents at one time. Six boys and six girls can stay on the premises and are segregated on the campus with approximately a mile separating them. Upon arrival residents are paired together as roommates. Today we have Jamison Monroe, founder of Newport Academy, a pioneering treatment center that helps teens and young adults struggling with addiction and other challenges. In his early teens, Jamison faced his own battles with addiction. An incredible amount of pressure to stay ahead in school, had him turning to drugs, starting with Adderall, to keep up with the workload. Underlying depression and anxiety that went undiagnosed for years, led him to start using alcohol to get through the day. There were blackouts, accidents, injuries, arrests, but adults in his life—parents, teachers, coaches—all looked the other way, either out of denial or just not wanting to take responsibility. So his substance abuse continued, and got much worse. After several stints in rehab, including one that ultimately treated his root issues, and after his father had the courage to step up and both face and deliver some hard truths, he got clean. And has since made helping other teens and young adults conquer their mental health issues, eating disorders, and substance abuse issues his mission and purpose. Jamison tells us the story of his journey from spiraling into deeper addiction, to getting sober, and finding his passion in helping others face and defeat their personal demons and core issues. It’s an inspirational story of not falling victim to our failures and mistakes, but embracing the experience and using it as fuel for ultimate success.

Newport Academy owner Jamison Monroe may look like a successful, dashing Southern gentleman and—well, he is. Not only do we rate Newport as one of the top 10 rehabs in the world but Monroe is a sought-after speaker (yep, that was him at the Aspen Ideas Festival) and frequent subject of articles. There's a reason for this: for all that Monroe was born into privilege, his inner world wasn't always so privileged and so, when he discovered in high school that all the so-called cool kids drank, he dove in head first. School expulsion, cutting, jail, suicidal ideation and many treatment centers followed but after finally getting clean and sober for good, Monroe found his life mission: he opened Orange County-based Newport in 2009 when he was 28 and a second facility in Connecticut in 2013. In this episode, we discuss what it means to be cool, how addiction is a family disease and how kids who hate rehab show up smiling at alumni events, among other topics.
