In this episode, Roane and Ben dive deep into the moment many encounter—the realization that they've "hit the wall." This wall represents the accumulation of unhealthy coping mechanisms and unmet desires, often rooted in a lack of guidance around relationships and sexuality. The conversation explores what to do when life makes you aware of the damage, whether through personal reflection or external confrontation. Ben and Roane discuss the fork in the road that follows this painful awareness: staying stuck in destructive patterns or choosing the difficult but rewarding path of growth. They share personal insights and hard truths about the cost of ignoring these moments—financially, emotionally, and relationally. The episode also touches on the unfolding nature of awareness, how it brings clarity and truth, and why choosing growth can lead to a fuller, more honest life. This candid and transformative conversation is for those who find themselves at a crossroads, seeking guidance and hope in the face of life's hard truths. To learn more about the Sex, God, & Chaos team, click the link below: www.sexgodchaos.com Looking for help? We often say, “Act your age.” But we also say, “Quit the act.” Either way, we are encouraging someone to bring their lives into conformity with the truth. Galatians 2:11–16 records the most intense conflict between Christian leaders in the New Testament. Peter had stepped out of line and Paul had the uncomfortable task of encouraging him, just as he encourages us, to not act out of fear but rather out of faith. Quit the act and act like a Christian. We consider this text under two headings: 1. Acting Out of Fear (vv. 11–14) 2. Acting Out of Faith (vv. 15–16)

Excited to kick off season 6 with Cherie Denna's story interview! Cherie Denna is an author, speaker, and writing coach. In this interview, she describes her dysfunctional childhood, which was comprised of mob members from her mom's family and outlaw bikers from her dad's family. Violence occurred daily. Additionally, Cherie and her sister were abused by her stepfather. At 17, she knew she had to get away from that toxic environment. She began to process the violence, abuse, and fear she experienced in her childhood home. The resulting trauma caused PTSD, suicidal ideations, and infertility. Many years later, Cherie accepted an invitation to a ladies retreat at a church from a friend. This event became a turning point for her. She accepted Jesus and discovered her identity and belonging in Him. Cherie's memoir, Beloved Outcast: The Quest for True Belonging, is releasing in February. Notable quotes from this episode with Cherie Denna: * "Just the nature of the culture of belonging to a mob family and being associated with outlaw bikers. Everything had to stay within the family. Nobody outside the family can be trusted." * "I grew up immersed in fear." * "I knew I had to get out of there. I thought I was running from it all. You can't. You can run from the environment, but the after effects of all the trauma goes with you." * [Jesus] set me on a whole different path. I had a way now through Him - through Christ - to truly learn who I was born to be. And who I truly belonged to." Scripture references:2 Corinthians 5:17: "if anyone is in Christ, he is a newcreation; the old has gone, the new had come!" Dr. Conti explains specific tools for how to overcome life's challenges using a framework of self-inquiry that explores all the key elements of self, including defense mechanisms, behaviors, self-awareness and attention. We also discuss our internal driving forces, how to align them and ultimately, how to cultivate a powerful “generative drive” of positive, aspirational pursuits. Dr. Conti also explains how to adjust your internal narratives, reduce self-limiting concepts, overcome intrusive thoughts, and how certain defense mechanisms, such as “acting out” or narcissism, show up in ourselves and others. You've got some friends in us! In this week's episode of Acting Out, we're doing things a little differently. Rather than focusing on one film per usual, we're tackling the entire Toy Story franchise, assessing how the series develops over its 25 year run and what Tom Hanks brings to the iconic role of Woody. We also get several camp stories from Ryan, a shift in Mitchell's Toy Story rankings, and maybe even a visit from Randy Newman. If you're liking the show, don't be shy: rate, review, and subscribe! Let's go to the moon! Or… maybe not. On this week's episode of Acting Out, we're talking about Ron Howard's 1995 space drama Apollo 13. We discuss how this is (easily) Howard's best film, question why he hasn't made more films like this, examine the film's portrayal of America's relationship with astronauts and the space race, and dissect a very fine and somewhat underrated Tom Hanks performance at the film's center. Struggling with what to do when your child acts out, or why they are? This guest interview with Kimball Lewis is truly eye-opening. Learn why our kids act out, how to course correct, and how to keep it from happening to begin with.
Acting Out is like a box of chocolates, and this week we're giving you a dose of 1994's Forrest Gump. Teaming up with Robert Zemeckis for the first time, we discuss how the film was such an unstoppable juggernaut that it netted Tom Hanks his second Best Actor win at the Oscars in consecutive years. We also get into some of the questionable decisions that have led to the film not aging well, what about the film still does work, and whether or not it's actually four hours long or just feels like it. On this episode of Acting Out, we discuss Jonathan Demme's 1993 drama Philadelphia, starring Tom Hanks as a lawyer with AIDS fighting discrimination and Denzel Washington as the bigot who defends him. We talk about Hanks' first Oscar winning performance, whether Washington is secretly better (and the lead), the absolute barnstorming success of the film critically and commercially, and the unique perspective Demme brings as a director that allows Philadelphia to be far more interesting cinematically than the boring Oscar bait it appears to be on paper. Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. Today we discuss perhaps the greatest living actor: Gene Hackman! Dan and Conor are joined by one of their good, good friends Mitchell Beaupre! Senior Editor at Letterboxd, co-host of their Weekend Watchlist podcast (as well as the brand new podcast Acting Out with Ryan and Mitchell), and contributor to great sites like The Film Stage (!), Paste Magazine, The Playlist, and Little White Lies. Our B-Sides today are: All Night Long, The Package, Heartbreakers, and Welcome to Mooseport. We talk Hackman's beginnings, Mitchell's superb piece on Hackman's spectacular 2001, the actor's own reflections on his accomplished career, his mid-career hiatus, and - finally - his frequent combativeness with his directors. Additional topics include Tommy Lee Jones' wild ‘90s, Jennifer Love Hewitt's recollection of Heartbreakers (both the good and the bad), the work of René Descartes, Nicolas Roeg's Hackman-starring epic Eureka, and the iconic Fox television show Party of Five. Be sure to give us a follow on Twitter and Facebook at @TFSBSide. Also enter our giveaways, get access to our private Slack channel, and support new episodes by becoming a Patreon contributor. We are also now on Spotify and Stitcher. Enjoy!
Something strange is going on in this neighborhood! On this week's episode of Acting Out, Ryan and Mitchell head into The Burbs for their Tom Hanks series. One of Hanks' left-field swings, The Burbs was a flop on release but has garnered a cult following in recent years and it's easy to see why. We discuss the film's many alternate endings, the tall drink of water that is Bruce Dern, how Joe Dante turns a mirror on xenophobic suburban horror, and whether our hosts have ever had an anchovy. Hello, and welcome to Acting Out, hosted by Ryan McQuade and Mitchell Beaupre! In this podcast, we look at the careers of specific actors, taking a curated selection of their filmography and doing an episode per film to analyze why they remain an actor we love to discuss. We'll chat about their biggest hits alongside some of their daring swings, and whether they worked or not. In our first episode, we begin our Tom Hanks series by discussing his 1984 Ron Howard-directed mermaid feature, Splash. Commonly cited as Hanks' breakout role, we talk about the film's questionable plotting, the committed performances from Daryl Hannah and Eugene Levy, and how even early on Hanks had that special something that would signal the force of nature he would soon become.
