Jay Cold-Reads a 10-Year-Old's Brain: "Not Broken, Just Needs a Tune-Up"

Jay Gunkelman goes in BLIND on a 10-year-old's EEG — no diagnosis, no story. What he finds isn't a broken brain: it's gross over-arousal with FAST alpha near 12 Hz, beta spindling up at 32 Hz that a database stopping at 30 would never see, and a left-side sympathetic source pointing at the insula. The likely complaint? Anxiety — maybe labeled OCD, maybe pushed toward an SSRI that would make this brain worse, not better. Jay lays out the actual fix: the Scott protocol's pre-treatment FIRST (calm the sympathetic trigger and slow content), THEN slow-alpha and alpha-theta training to drop the arousal. Read the brain, and the trajectory of a whole life changes. Plus: Joshua Moore previews his first QEEG-phenotypes workshop.

Jay Gunkelman has read more than half a million brain scans. In this episode he and host Pete Jansons open a real before-and-after case and walk it frame by frame — eyes open and eyes closed, pre-treatment and post-treatment — so you can watch what changed. Going in: fast alpha racing at 11.5 Hz, 23 Hz beta spindling at the vertex driving insomnia, a slow edge of alpha buried in the left temporal lobe pointing at local ischemia and possible old head injury, and right-frontal beta carrying a depressive signature. Coming out: alpha stabilized toward 10 Hz, frontal beta down, left-temporal function dramatically improved. Then the bigger story — the refractory-psychiatry work Jay did with Ron Swatzyna and Nash Boutros, where roughly half of medication failures turned out to have a focal EEG biomarker that no pill could fix. As Jay puts it: you can't give soup to the whole brain.

Jay Gunkelman goes in BLIND on Case 9 — an 18-year-old's eyes-open EEG, age only, no history. Joshua Moore bet his car on a left posterior concussion. Jay sees something deeper: a thalamocortical dysrhythmia at the anterior cingulate, slow and fast rhythms coupled together, beta spindling above 30 Hz that most databases can't even see. Left-side mu disconnect shutting down the language hemisphere. Posterior insula, left side. After half a million EEGs, Jay's verdict isn't a diagnosis — it's a phenotype that tells you how to treat it, not what to call it.

Jay Gunkelman goes in BLIND on Case 8 — a 30-year-old whose eyes-open EEG looks like eyes-closed. Alpha at 150 microvolts. Widespread. Anteriorized. Not responding to eye opening. After half a million EEGs, Jay calls the phenotype on sight: vigilance regulation problem, not attention. Left-side mu disconnect. Right-parietal alpha persistence. Frontal alpha hyper-coherence climbing from 0.5 eyes-open to 0.6+ eyes-closed — affect regulation flag. Plus a treatment map more granular than the room expected: FC beta for salience activation, C3 for language, C4 for affect, C4-to-PZ for the parietal alpha that won't quit. And a history segment most listeners have never heard — the first transmitted EEG in 1974, phase-lock loops over voice-grade phone lines, Trudy and Eric Gibbs, Larry Wood's engineering. Stay for the inter-rater reliability number that should end the classical-EEG debate: 90% on phenotypes vs 30-40% on traditional reads.

Jay Gunkelman goes in BLIND — no diagnosis, no report, no hints. Just the EEG that Joshua Moore reviewed live with the panel on The Brain Bar the night before. Two recordings, two months apart, unknown treatment in between.Jay's read: low voltage slow, diffuse encephalopathy, salience network packed with delta, right anterior insula involvement, cardio-ballistic screaming Pickwickian sleep apnea. The kicker? When Joshua revealed the case on Brain Bar, the patient HAS a confirmed sleep apnea diagnosis. Jay called it from the waveform alone. The full reveal: live-in-nurse-revoked patient who regained dressing, feeding, and recognition. OSHA reached out asking what they did. Jay's verdict: god awful to terrible. That's the line.

Jay goes in **blind** — no diagnosis, no report — and disagrees with Joshua's TBI read on the exact same 50-year-old EEG. Joshua reviewed it live on The Brain Bar the night before. The next day on Thursday Carnac, Jay cold-reads the slow alpha at PZ, lands on hyperbaric + 40 Hz photobiomodulation, and shows how neurofeedback fits into the treatment plan.  Author of one of my top reads of the year, June Bug, Chris Fabry is also the novelist for the Kendrick Brothers' beloved movies including the most recent, The Forge. Listen in as we discuss the story and the process of writing from a screenplay! note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you.   Chis Fabry, author of so many beloved novels and the podcaster behind Moody's Chris Fabry Live, has teamed up with the Kendrick Brothers again to bring the book version of the story to readers.  I loved chatting about the themes within the book, the process of writing it, and what we might see in the future.    The Forge by Chris Fabry  As Cynthia Wright's marriage implodes, she is forced to raise her teenage son, Isaiah, alone. The pressure of providing for them through her salon is a full-time job in itself. When Cynthia sees Isaiah pulling away and escaping into video games, tensions rise and prayers feel unanswered. Angry and hurt, Isaiah starts acting like the father who abandoned him, and Cynthia gives him an ultimatum while turning to her twin sister, Elizabeth Jordan, for support. Elizabeth enlists a seasoned prayer warrior who challenges Cynthia to pray boldly and believe God for the impossible. Caught in the middle, Isaiah longs for respect, but sees no clear path to becoming a good man. Desperate for a job, he wanders into Moore Fitness, Inc. and encounters the owner, Joshua Moore, who introduces him to the concept of working for a coach rather than a boss. Needing the work, Isaiah reluctantly begins his mentoring process with Joshua. While Cynthia clings to hope, no one sees the coming storms brewing at the company and in Isaiah's heart. The Forge is about the power of prayer, the transformation only God can achieve, and the lasting influence one person can have on others. The newest film by the legendary Kendrick brothers, currently playing in theaters, feels impeccably focus-grouped for maximum impact of a Christian movie in 2024. We're not surprised that director Alex Kendrick and producer Stephen Kendrick were able to create another competent and successful Christian film. They have a history of huge box office success stories on relatively low budgets, including WAR ROOM (2015) which notably became the #1 film in America during its second week of release. On a reported budget of $5 million, THE FORGE has already grossed $26 million in its first month, which is huge in the faith-based genre. THE FORGE seems like a spiritual sequel to WAR ROOM; it casts a lot of the same actors from WAR ROOM in extremely similar roles, including Priscilla Shirer (daughter of mega-church pastor Tony Evans) as a strong but exasperated mother struggling with family issues. In THE FORGE, newcomer Aspen Kennedy plays recent high school graduate Isaiah Wright, a directionless 19-year-old without a father who is unemployed and seems to have no passions in life beyond video games and basketball. When he gets a part time job at local business Moore Fitness, CEO Joshua Moore (played by Cameron Arnett) takes Isaiah under his wing and becomes the father he never had. With the help of an exclusive Christian men's club called “The Forge”, Isaiah finally feels motivation to become the man he has always wanted to be. But unspoken in the film's plot is how the setting of THE FORGE, Moore Fitness, is meant to resemble an Amazon fulfillment warehouse. THE FORGE attempts to bring dignity and motivation to fulfillment center employees through an unimaginable plot line where Isaiah and his coworkers volunteer to work a 24 hour shift to save the company. Sadly, this feels laughably out of touch for a film that otherwise does an eerily good job of elevating the mundane of an everyday Christian's life in today's fallen world. NIL expert Pete Nakos discusses recent major commitments: Notable recruits: David Sanders: Commanded an NIL deal of approximately $1.3 million/year. Michael Fasusi: Committed to Oklahoma with an NIL deal over $1 million. Jonah Williams: Committed to Texas with significant NIL involvement. Impact of NIL on Recruitment: Discussion on how NIL deals affect recruitment: Offensive tackles command higher NIL packages, up to $1.3 million. Skill positions generally receive lower NIL offers, e.g., $300k-$700k for top wide receivers like Jaime Ffrench. NIL and Flip Season: Flip season's significance and impact on recruitment. NIL can double or include significant incentives for a player to flip. Discussion on the legalities and complexities of NIL deals when recruits flip. Upcoming Florida Gators vs. Miami Hurricanes Visit Weekend: Key recruits to watch: DJ Pickett: Florida and Miami are trying to sway him after he picked LSU. Hilton Stubbs: Committed to Miami but visiting Florida. Ty Jackson: Miami has more ground to make up; Florida is slightly ahead. Joshua Moore: Committed to Florida but still a priority for Miami. Jarquez Carter: Committed to Ohio State but still open to Florida and Miami. Neutral Site Game Logistics For Georgia Bulldogs: Recruit Seating: Recruits from Georgia and Clemson will sit in separate sections, as the game is at a neutral site. Recruits attend as guests of either Georgia or Clemson and will watch from the bleachers, without the typical on-field access. Kirby Smart values the national publicity of this high-profile game, despite its limitations on recruiting opportunities compared to a home game in Athens. Smart views the Mercedes-Benz Stadium as a potential venue for multiple games this season, including the SEC Championship and College Football Playoff. Key Recruits Attending UGA vs. Clemson: Defensive Linemen: Justus Terry and Elijah Griffin, both 5-star plus defensive linemen, will be in attendance. UGA is not pressing them for commitments yet, but Rusty believes both will ultimately commit to Georgia. Running Back Ousmane Kromah: Although Ousmane has been linked to Florida State and Auburn, Georgia remains interested, especially with the connection between new running backs coach Josh Crawford and Lee County High School. Rutgers Flip Targets: Georgia is actively pursuing Rutgers commits Chase Linton and Braxton Kyle. Linton has already de-committed from Rutgers, and it is likely he will end up at Georgia. Flip Season & Visiting Recruits with Chad Simmons: Overview: As fall approaches, so does "flip season," where committed players might reconsider their choices. Several high-profile recruits are planning visits to schools they are not committed to. Key Recruits to Watch: DJ Pickett: Committed to LSU Tigers but is planning visits to Florida, Miami, and Oregon. Deuce Knight: Currently committed to Notre Dame, but Auburn is confident they can flip him. Julian Lewis: The USC QB commit might visit Indiana and Colorado. Naeem Offord: Committed to Ohio State, but Auburn is making a strong push to flip him. Caleb Cunningham: Committed to Alabama, but Ole Miss is actively trying to flip him. Dallas Wilson: Committed to Oregon, but plans to visit Florida, Miami, and Florida State. CJ Wiley: Shocked many by choosing FSU over LSU and Georgia, but might visit Athens this fall. Miami's Recruiting Outlook: Miami is currently ranked #10 in recruiting. Success on the field this season could elevate their ranking to the top 5. Game Impact: The Miami vs. Florida game in Gainesville is crucial for Miami's recruiting efforts. Recruits like Joshua Moore and DJ Pickett will be closely watching the game, which could influence their decisions.

This new movie is about the process of making a man - and it's a powerful story of prayer, forgiveness, redemption, and salvation!    The Forge opens in theaters across the country on Friday, August 23, 2024.   In the movie, Joshua Moore (older man, business owner) asks a younger Isaiah some important questions that cause Isaiah to pause and evaluate his life and future - here are those questions:   5 years from now, where do you want to be? What ways do you want to grow in the next year? What kind of man do you want to be? What do you want people to think when they see you coming?   The Forge isn't a “self-help” movie about making better decisions - Isaiah surrenders his life to Christ and as he begins to follow Jesus, his life and decisions are radically changed! The Forge also highlights the importance of walking in community - surrounded by others to hold us accountable and encourage us on our journey!   T4M guys - just a reminder that Training4Manhood is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) ministry and you can make donations either via Zelle (info@training4manhood.com) or by visiting the Training4Manhood website.
