Have you ever uttered a Christian cliche only to realize you're not even sure what it means? Or maybe someone has used Christianese on you in a most non-sensical way. Perhaps you don't even realize you use these catch phrases. Whatever the case, there are some well-meaning words that simply don't square up theologically. Every Christian parent longs to see their prodigal child—or any lost loved one—return to faith. But what if, in our eagerness to “speak truth” and correct their course, we’re actually widening the gap between them and God? In this eye-opening episode, Catherine welcomes Michael French—an attorney-turned-pastor with decades of experience in both traditional church settings and unconventional, deeply relational ministry. Through friendships forged in unexpected places—from tabletop games to immersive role play—Michael has reached those the Church often overlooks or even avoids: witches, warlocks, LGBTQ+ individuals, and the spiritually wounded. Michael’s story challenges how we think about evangelism, reminding us that Jesus always led with love before calling for change. He built relationships with the rejected, the broken, and the misunderstood—then spoke truth into hearts softened by compassion. This episode will reshape how you approach the prodigals and lost loved ones in your life—and rekindle hope that no one is too far gone. Key Insights from the Episode:

A Word With You

My wife always had a very full life, but not too full to keep her from exercising her mischievous streak once in a while. (Once in a while?) Like with some of the gifts that she's given me over the years. She's been known to take a gift and put it in a little wrapped box inside a little bigger box, inside a little bigger box, inside... well, you know. I had to open all of those boxes to get to my little present. You wade through several empty boxes, except for the newspaper that's wrapped around nothing, and you begin to wonder, "Is there really any gift in here?" And, "Is it really worth all this?" I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "Uncomplicating Christ." Our word for today from the Word of God comes from 1 Corinthians 9:12. The great missionary, Paul, says this: "We put up with anything rather than hinder the gospel of Christ." This great representative of the Lord Jesus is saying, "I don't want to do anything, I don't want to say anything that might keep someone from saying yes to the gospel and saying yes to Jesus." Could it be that we have encumbered this good news we have with some extra baggage that keeps people from getting to the cross? See, we have a tendency to take this simple gift of eternal life and complicate it with all these layers around it. I was at a seminar not long ago, actually I was teaching it, and I was talking about what it means to be young and lost. And a woman in her early twenties came up afterwards and she said, "I was the person you described just four years ago." And she went on to tell me about a Christian who didn't help her. This girl had no Christian background, and a guy came up to her in high school and he gave her this picture of Jesus knocking at the door of her heart and he said, "Do you notice that there's no handle on the door? The reason is that the handle is on the inside and you have to let Him in." And he walked away. Well, after he walked away, she said, "Let who in?" She didn't know anything about Jesus. It was the only time in her life up until then she'd ever heard about Him, but He was wrapped in religious talk that she couldn't understand. Now, this believer intended well I'm sure, probably just thought she just didn't want to get it. Actually, she didn't know how to get through the layers around Him. Then she was invited to church a few years later, and she said, "Well, what should I wear?" And the gal said, "It doesn't matter." Thank God that believer attended a church where it doesn't matter. She said, "I went and accepted Christ the first time I heard the gospel in a way I could understand." But everything hinged on the answer to that one question, "What should I wear?" See, she would have missed it all. But there was a group of believers who offered God's gift without a lot of boxes and wrapping paper around it. I hope that's the Jesus that you're sharing, that your church is sharing. We can put obstacles in front of lost people by attacking particular sins and trying to clean them up before they've been to the cross. You don't clean fish before you catch them. Or maybe we bring in issues and doctrines that aren't a part of the simple gospel. We have a sin problem; that's the gospel. Sin carries an eternal death penalty. Jesus paid that penalty in our place. We trade in eternal death for eternal life when we turn from running our life and put all our trust in Jesus. That's it! We put the gospel out of reach when we explain it in "Christianese" language that an unbeliever doesn't understand. We're making a mistake that may have life-and-death consequences when we load the gospel with extra baggage that obscures Christ's simple offer. Paul said it all, "I was determined to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified." Listen, you may be someone who's been confused by church people. You've been confused by all the wrapping around Jesus and you've missed the fact this is all about a man who loved you enough to die for your sin, and is powerful enough to walk out of His grave. He wants to walk into your life today. Don't miss Jesus because of the wrapping paper. It's all about Jesus. There's so much more about Him at our website that I'd love to show you. Would you go there today? It's ANewStory.com. And if you're carrying the message of Jesus, wrap it simple like God did.

Episode Synopsis:My first exposure to tongue-speaking did not go well.  In an “afterglow” service which followed a mid-week Bible study at an Orange County megachurch, a large number of the faithful remained after the study to “experience” the gifts of the Spirit, including the “gift of tongues.”  A young pastor took over from the Bible teacher and explained how to begin speaking in tongues.  He read several passages from Acts 2 and from 1 Corinthians 12-14 and told us that these verses were proof that the gift is “biblical,” “for today,” and enabled you to by-pass the clutter of the mind to commune with God “in the Spirit.”  He then told us, if you'd like to speak in tongues here's what you do.  You start by saying “kitty, kitty, kitty,” until the Spirit took over and gave you your prayer language.  The room was suddenly filled with people speaking gibberish, swaying, acting as though under the influence, crying, and making contorted faces as they spoke.  I wasn't having it, and quietly slipped out. Years later, after my biblical knowledge increased, I realized that the “afterglow” I witnessed that night was very much like what Paul was instructing the Corinthians not to do in the last half of 1 Corinthians 14.  There was no interpretation of any of these tongues, though several attendees did offer exhortations of their own utterances, but which very much sounded like Christianese made up on the fly.  Everyone spoke at once, and the whole room was filled with tongue-speakers, not merely two or three in order.  I was a Christian and still thought these people were crazy.  I can only imagine what an unbeliever would think.Once TBN graced the airwaves (emanating from Orange County) tongue-speaking was now televised.  This time, tongue-speaking was not done in a worship service but was part of the regular programming and often conflated with predictive prophesy– “the Lord will do this or that, and heal this one or that one.”  The interpretation was almost always supplied by the tongue-speaker.  The low point came during a televised “anointing service” held at Oral Roberts University in which three older Word-Faith evangelists (Oral Roberts, Kenneth Hagin Sr. and T. L. Osbourn) anointed three younger Word-Faith evangelists (Kenneth Hagin Jr, Kenneth Copeland, and Richard Roberts).  Once anointed, the men acted as though in a drunken stupor, spoke in tongues (one of which sounded like the Cab Calloway's riff from the Blues Brothers–scubity-do, scubity-do--scubity-do).  Not a known language.  A VHS recording of this made the rounds and to no one's surprise, the universal assessment was “these people are crazy.”This is why a study of Paul's instructions to the churches on 1 Corinthians 14:20-40 about the proper use of prophesy and tongue-speaking is about as practical a matter as one can find.  Paul would have none of this.  Neither should we.For show notes and other recommended materials located at the Riddleblog as mentioned during the Blessed Hope Podcast, click here: https://www.kimriddlebarger.com/

Often times, Christians can be accused of speaking a different language when it comes to their faith. Christianese has been a term that highlights a potential barrier between believers and non-believers, especially when it comes to sharing what we believe and why we believe it. We often get accused of being cultish when we use words, terms and phrases that sound strange to those who are not Christians. How do we live out our faith authentically without sounding strange? How do we begin our journey towards hope, healing, redemption, rescue, and a restoration to wholeness?  Where and when does our journey back to life begin again?  As a Follower of the Way (A Christian) What about our faith? How does our faith fit into our healing journey?  This talk has no cliches, no Christianese and does not put forward promises of false hope. Brett Ullman in The Walking Wounded begins to address how to walk back towards healing and away from our emotions, feelings and thoughts that are keeping us paralyzed in life.  No shame, fear, or hiding is required as we are safe to journey towards healing together. There is Hope for the Walking Wounded. More on Brett from his website: Brett works as a full time speaker "[travelling] North America speaking to teens, young adults, leaders, and parents on topics including parenting, mental health, media, marriage, men, pornography, and dating. Brett's seminars engage and challenge attendees to try and connect our ancient faith with our modern culture we live in. I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Thursday morning, the 2nd of January, 2025, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. We go straight to the Gospel of Matthew 6:8. Jesus said: “Therefore do not be like them. For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him.” Now just before that, the Lord tells us that He is not interested in vain repetition when you pray, not fancy words. I love what C H Spurgeon says. He talks about “homemade prayers”. If there is one thing I really desire for you as we go into the new year, is that this year be a year where you learn to speak daily to the Lord Jesus Christ, prayers which come straight from the heart, speaking straight to Jesus Christ - no flowery Christianese, but honest day to day language. The Lord understands it, just that ordinary layman's language to a Carpenter, just tell Him exactly how you are feeling, tell Him how things really are, and ask Him to help you. It is not so much about the words even, is it? It is more about the heart of the prayer. We need to speak to Jesus through the Holy Spirit, just as you would speak to your workmate in the office, in the field, in the workshop. David Wilkerson, in his book, The Cross and The Switchblade, said sometimes, when he would pray the Sinner's Prayer with those young gangsters from the ghettos of New York, their vocabulary was non-existent. Every second word was a swear word and they prayed the Sinner's Prayer in blasphemous language, they were unaware of that, but their heart was pleading with God.I remember, just after I had given my life to Christ, we were sitting in a circle in a prayer meeting, probably the first one I had ever been to, and each one of us had to pray. The leader said, “Just pray” and we had never prayed out loud. The turn came to one old gentleman, his name was John, and I have never forgotten his prayer. His prayer came from the depths of his heart. He was in big trouble and he said, “Oh God, please help me!” And the Lord helped him. As you go into this new year, make prayer a priority in your life, every single morning and right through the day, and last of all at night, before you go to sleep. Speak to Him in homemade prayers.Jesus bless you and goodbye.

This message does not target anyone, VFC does not hate anyone, everyone is invited to worship, and questions are welcomed. We're looking at sex from a biblical perspective today and see which beliefs we hold are cultural, and which are scriptural. There are three ways Christians typically view sex: dirty, idolatry, or holy 5 Biblical truths about sex:1. Sex has a designer.Genesis 2:25 When unaffected by sin, sex a good gift from a good God. 2. Sex has a purpose. The designer of a thing determines the purpose of a thing.Sex has two main purposes: Creating children. Spiritual glue1 Cor. 6:13 Sex is not just a physical-only activity like food is.  1 Cor. 6:15-17 Sex is joining yourself to another person. There is no such thing as a one-night stand because sex, by design, stays with you after its over.  There is no such thing as "just sex." 3. Sex has boundaries. In order for sex to remain good, it must be used according to the designer's purpose. Helpful things become harmful things when used outside of their boundaries.Fornication, or sexual immorality, is any sexual activity outside of God's boundaries and beyond God's purposes.1 Corinthians 6:18  God's biblical behavioral boundaries for sex:One man, one woman, consensual, and protected by marriage commitment. The following behaviors are types  of sexual immorality:- Sex before marriage. (Christianese, part 2: Fornication - June 11, 2017) It's dangerous to bond yourself to someone who hasn't committed to you. - Co-habitation. (Elephants in the Room 2018, part 1: Aug 5th 2018) - Pornography. (More Elephants, part 3: Aug 21st 2016) Porn is sin: it hurts the people in it, it hurts the people watching it, it hurts marriages, it is addictive like the worst drugs, and its one of the main reasons why human trafficking exists.  - Homosexuality. (Loving the LGBT Community, Aug 25th 2019) Same sex relationships are not God's design for humanity. Because of our sin nature, we are all born with desires that are outside of God's boundaries for sexual behavior, Having a desire is not a sin; acting on it is. - Incest, Bestiality and Rape. The Bible records these things but never condones these things. - Adultery. (Elephants 2021, part 2 - Aug 8, 2021) Adultery is devastating to a marriage because it destroys the very thing a marriage is based on—trust.  4. Sex should be a regular part of a healthy marriage.Since sex is for marriage, sex should be good in marriage.1 Corinthians 7:2-5Practice good sex! 5. You can receive forgiveness for sexual sin.Sexual sin is not unforgivable sin. If you've made mistakes in the past, you can be free.1 Corinthians 6:9-11 Repent, receive his grace and make Jesus Lord of your sex life. Become a holysexual.                   Have you surrendered your sex life Jesus?

Oftentimes we as Christians are able to do the right things and say the right things to appear to be "good Christians" to the world and to other believers. But we can't fool God by cleaning up our external appearance--God looks at the heart. How do we begin to care more about the state of our heart than the state of our appearance?

Wayne and Jeremy discuss Acts 14, focusing on verses 1-7 in the first half and verses 8-18 in the second half. In the first section, they reflect on how Paul and Barnabas were able to speak in a way that both Jews and Greeks (religious and non-religious people) believed. Wayne notes the importance of not just using "Christianese" but speaking plainly. They discuss how to talk about faith to unbelievers in an understandable way. They also note that even though the apostles faced opposition from unbelieving Jews, they continued speaking boldly by God's power and saw signs and wonders. Wayne questions if he speaks boldly enough for God. In the second section, they discuss the healing of the crippled man in Lystra. Jeremy notes how people often want to elevate or repay religious leaders, thinking it gets them favor with God. They both see parallels to Jesus' temptation, where he refused to use his power for his own benefit. Paul and Barnabas reject the people's sacrifice to them as gods. They declare they are just men who bring good news of the living God. Jeremy notes how easy it is for humans to take credit the longer a process takes, when really God deserves all glory. Wayne closes by saying they are just "spark plugs" through which God works, having no power or hope to give on their own. Jeremy prays they would all continue having revelations from God's word and applying it to grow closer to him. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/reduxchurch/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/reduxchurch/support

Moses could not lead Israel into the land of promise and rest. Joshua — who was not a young man at this time, found that now it was his time to lead, but only after God had prepared him. Joshua was prepared by faithful service in small things, in being Moses' assistant. Joshua is told…Be Strong and Courageous. But what does this mean?    It genuinely feels like one of those “Christianese” statements that church people love to say without fully understanding what it means. It seems strange to be telling Joshua, who was one of the two spies, among the group of twelve, to see the promised land with the enemy as large as giants, yet report to Moses that they could take the land. You're telling Joshua, who hasn't demonstrated any lack of strength or courage in any aspect of his life, to be strong and courageous.
