Urmi Hossain shares her sense of belonging in the world. As a proud South Asian woman who has an interesting and inspiring story that we can all learn from. Her family of origin roots are embedded in Bangladesh, as both parents are from there, but a few years before she was born, they emigrated to Sicily, Italy, for better opportunities. It is heard that Urmi was the first Bengali baby born in Sicily. She grew up speaking Bangla at home and Italian in school and with her friends. Currently, she lives in Montreal, Canada, and her multilingual and cultural influence is extraordinary. She speaks about being a “third culture kid,” which means her roots are embedded in one culture, while growing up in another, and then taking both of those backgrounds and moving to another country. When she relocated to Canada to attend university she was fluent in four languages: Bengali, Italian, English and French. She is currently learning Spanish which she knows is important for her work. Her philosophy and advice to immigrants is to integrate quickly and building a community is essential for growth. Urmi fell in love with the finance field while at university and now has a successful career as an investment associate. In her spare time over the last three years, she has managed her own YouTube page, which focuses on sharing study tips for the CFA exam, among many other interesting topics. She lives every day to its fullest and embraces new professional and personal challenges with grace. Her inner strength and resilience are evident at every turn as she finds that she belongs exactly where she is.

In this episode of Nomadic Diaries, we sat down with Tanya Crossman, a leading expert on Third Culture Kids (TCKs) whose personal experiences and professional work have made her a trusted voice in the global mobility community. Tanya's Third Culture Journey Tanya Crossman's journey as a TCK began with moves between Australia and the United States during her childhood, following her father's career path. Her cross-cultural experiences deepened significantly when she later spent 13 years living and working in China. These formative experiences across different continents gave her unique insights into the TCK experience that would later inform her professional work and writing. Finding Community Among the Misunderstood After years of feeling like an outsider in her own culture, Tanya discovered the profound relief of finding others who shared similar experiences. This revelation became the foundation of her life's work, as captured in her powerful quote: "I'm not alone has become a mantra for so much of the work that I do." Defining the Third Culture Experience Tanya brings clarity to what it means to be a Third Culture Kid, addressing common misconceptions and explaining that the "third culture" isn't a specific place but rather the shared experience of growing up among different cultural worlds. She explores how TCKs develop a unique cultural identity that combines elements from their passport culture, host cultures, and the expatriate community itself. Emotional Intelligence and TCK Challenges One of the most valuable insights Tanya shares is how the TCK experience can affect emotional development:A tendency toward emotional suppression as a survival mechanism during frequent transitionsHow this suppression can hinder the development of healthy conflict resolution skillsThe importance of creating safe spaces for TCKs to process complex emotions about mobility, identity, and belongingGuidance for Parents and Caregivers Tanya offers practical wisdom for parents raising children across cultures:The importance of preventive care rather than crisis interventionCreating environments where emotions can be expressed safely and processedUnderstanding that TCKs are "growing up in a completely different world than you are"Recognizing the unique challenges and opportunities that come with a globally mobile childhoodResources for the TCK Journey Tanya highlights the growing body of resources available to support TCKs and their families:Her book, "Misunderstood," which explores common threads in TCK experiences"Third Culture Kids: Growing Up Among Worlds" (often called the TCK Bible)Practical tools for parents, educators, and caregivers working with globally mobile children Connect with Tanya For more resources on supporting Third Culture Kids:Personal website:  tanyacrossman.com TCK Training:  tcktraining.com  Support the showHome is Where Your Story Crosses Borders! We aim to inspire expat solutions, by helping you navigate global living with Confidence.

#tck #thirdculturekids #girlsboardingschool #boardingschoolsyndromeWhat is a third culture kid (TCK)I would love for you to share what drew you both to create this book about women's experiences boarding school and being Third Culture Kids?Could you please speak to how many of the women missed their adopted homelands and how much this negatively impacted their impressions of the UK?Could you please talk about the research for how children have a very sensory response to place which impacts how they respond to new geographies for the rest of their lives? What was the sensory difference between their homes and boarding school? In particular, we might like to chat about the following if that works for you:Our stories – similarities and differences – both TCK – Nicky mercantile, Linda missionary. Writing a book about women's experiences by women was important to us both. Less has been written about this and some of the books about women have had less traction in the media than those written by and about men. All but one of our participants identify as women. Being different is not safe at BS. Different ‘rules' for men and women – binaries – impossible to ‘be' otherwise.Women in our book felt growing up in a BS was isolating and conformist – either just treated like a bloke in skirts (with no discussion of women's bodily functions or needs, or, raised to be “young ladies” – Joy Schaverien's comment on this is that men go to BS to learn to serve their country, while women are taught to serve men. Shame used as a tool of control – probably reinforced discomfort in our skin and shame about our bodies – constantly ‘on show' and not it a good way. Eg headmaster who ‘supervised' showers – female staff often not in positions of power and are also constrained/disadvantaged by patriarchal structures. Poisonous pedagogy – designed to break the child's will – often early (first afternoon, first night, first meal) and public – so everyone saw the shame.Nicky Moxey, an ex-boarder, originally spent 33 years as a project manager and Agile coach. She is retraining as an integrative counsellor and intends to work with boarding school survivors after she qualifies.Linda Devereux is a third culture kid with more than 40 years of teaching experience in schools and universities. "We can't be creative all the time. We have to be like a vegetable on the couch sometimes." - Chris NguyenChris's story is one of adaptability, creativity, and carving out your own space in a world that often demands labels. I loved this conversation because it really encapsulated what it means to be a third culture kid—straddling different worlds, blending influences, and figuring out where you truly belong. We talked about everything from UX design to content creation, and what really stood out to me was Chris's perspective on finding a niche—or rather, not having one. He's embraced a philosophy of creative exploration, which is refreshing in a world that constantly pushes us to specialize.Another highlight for me was our discussion on the expat experience in Vietnam. Chris has a unique vantage point as someone with Vietnamese heritage but a Western upbringing, and he shed light on how that shapes his interactions with both locals and other expats. His insights into the fast-growing creative and tech scene in Vietnam were fascinating, especially for anyone looking to start a business or build a career here.It was a conversation full of laughs, deep insights, and, most importantly, a real look at what it means to build a life across cultures. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.Key Takeaways:The idea of a "niche" is overrated—authenticity matters more.Creativity comes in waves, and that's okay. You don't have to be productive all the time.Expats in Vietnam often get pigeonholed into certain labels, but everyone has a unique story."Send me a message!"7 Bridges Brewing Co. - An award winning Vietnamese craft brewery from Da Nang, with breweries across Vietnam!Rabbit Hole Irish Sports Bar - Check out their new location on Tran Nao with the best views in the city over Landmark 81! He also unpacks what it means for a church to “hold the ropes” for its missionaries and the blessing of having his adult daughter now serving in missions. Listen to some of our previous Third Culture Kid episodes. “When [my dad] was told no, he trusted that what God was doing in his heart and in his life, that God was going to make it happen.” “Where we are weak, where sometimes we feel like or have even been told that we don't have what it takes, God can overcome any of that stuff.” “God can use me with my interests and my gifting in a very different way than my dad.” Third Culture Kids by David Pollock and Ruth Van Reken “It was not a couple of days or couple of weeks thing; this was actually a couple of years. It took a while for me to realize what God was doing.” “Any decisions have to be saturated in prayer.” Operation World and Joshua Project “The process of praying through and considering those different things and the conversations that that led to around the dining room table - that was where God was working and shaping our hearts.”  “You open up your hands to God, and you say, ‘Anywhere, anytime, anything. I just want to be obedient. I'm going to follow You. You made me in Your image, and You've designed me to bring You glory, so I want to bring You glory, and I'll do it anywhere, anytime, I'll do anything to bring You glory.'” “Looking for wise counsel around you [...] that's a really vital piece of discerning God's will.” “We are called to reach our neighbors, we are called to reach our wider community, but we are also called to be the Gospel light around the world.” “We've been the recipients of seeing a church be faithful to [holding the ropes].” “We need to know our missionaries, we need to care for our missionaries, and that's way beyond caring for just their financial needs.” “One way to support is to read the prayer updates carefully, and then we're all humans, so let's engage at a human level with compassion.” Dave's suggestions if you're considering missions: Pray! Ask others to pray with you Consider taking a short-term mission trip Read missionary biographies Serve where you are “For a boat that's tied to the dock, the rudder is worthless [...] Once you push off, the rudder can direct the boat anywhere.
