My name is Rabbi Matt Schneeweiss, and this is the hub for all of my shiurim (classes) on Sefer Mishlei, a.k.a. The Book of Proverbs! Generally speaking we will follow the approach to Mishlei outlined by Saadia Gaon who views Mishlei as a guide for intelligent decision-making in everyday life with the goal of maximizing long-term pleasure and minimizing long-term pain. Each shiur will typically focus on one pasuk (verse), which we will attempt to analyze on our own before turning to the meforshim (commentators). If you have any questions feel free to email me at rabbischneeweiss at gmail. Thanks for listening!

On its surface, the pasuk addresses the effect of evil rulers on destitute people, but Reish Lakish uses it as an aggadic introduction to the Megilah. Today we developed our own approach and examined a few meforshim. We didn't even come up with our usual number of questions or problems. Yet after a few false starts, we developed some genuinely strong ideas and learned a great deal from the meforshim, including a banger of a Rabbeinu Yonah. After reviewing our questions and approaches, then speculating about a derech nistar (esoteric approach), we read through several meforshim. While none of them offered anything radically new, we appreciated the nuanced directions they took, which led to a few new insights. The style of this pasuk was unusual and ... unsettling? We came up with a nice set of our own ideas - so many, in fact, that we didn't have as much time to explore the meforshim before the end of shiur. Even though I liked what we said, I still would have preferred to find a solid chiddush in the meforshim, like we usually do. Oh well! We delved a bit deeper into the derech nigleh, trying to understand exactly what makes a person sick of his friend's presence. But our main goal was to focus on the derech nistar, which I WISH we had more time to explore! I'm especially happy with the idea we learned from Zerachiah Chein.Someone recently asked me whether I find new chidushim in Mishlei. The question had the vibe of, "Don't you get bored?" I answered that we ALWAYS find new chidushim and we rarely get to more than a handful of meforshim before we have to move on. To my surprise and delight, we came up with close to a DOZEN interpretations! We barely had time to learn any of the meforshim, since there were so many original interpretations. I'm sure that if we had time to delve into more meforshim, we'd see them taking similar approaches, but shiur was running late as it is, and we had to stop. We found support for one of our approaches in the Ralbag. We then resumed working on Metzudas David and came up with a nice idea that built off of the previous pasuk. We then took up Saadia Gaon, which we found insightful but didn't completely understand. We concluded with the Ri Nachmias - a high-quality commentary that we often overlook. Great ideas, as always! Fortunately for us, this one had a lot of "ins" and we quickly developed several of our own approaches before learning two approaches from the meforshim. Unfortunately, we had to end shiur before learning the many other viable approaches the meforshim had to offer. The only truly new approach we tackled was Saadia Gaon, who begins with a highly structured reading of the pasuk in the nigleh, then turns to the nistar. Since I had not prepared this ahead of time, I may have gotten some points wrong. I call "straight-up advice." No mashalim, no cryptic wording, no riddles - just proverbs telling you what to do and why. My question going into this was whether there would be any correlation between the style of presentation and the quality or depth of the ideas. Judging by this morning's analysis, the answer seems to be in the negative. We had just as many questions here as we usually do, and the ideas we developed felt completely Mishleic. The pasuk itself was intriguing, and we came up with some nice ideas. But the real shock of the night was one of the most jaw-dropping commentaries I've ever seen from Ibn Kaspi. Even the readers of my substack who are familiar with his acerbic tongue will be flabbergasted by the content and tone of his tirade. I'll say in all seriousness that if you're struggling to have kids, then I honestly don't know whether you SHOULD or SHOULDN'T listen to this shiur. After briefly getting the peshat of the introductory 25:1, we analyzed 25:2, which is stylistically different from most of the Mishlei we've learned over the past 4+ years (as will be the case for the remainder of the sefer). We came up with a few half-baked approaches, one of which was solid. I shared my own intuition which ended up being supported by Metzudas David, and the other solid approach was similar to what the Ralbag said. I'm curious to see what we find in the other meforshim, but we'll have to wait until after Rosh ha'Shanah for that.---מקורות:משלי כה:א-בתרגום רס"גמצודת ציון/דודרלב"ג-----The Torah Content for the month of September is sponsored by Meir Areman in loving memory of his grandmother, Esther Chasha bas Meir Gedalya, who recently passed away on the 25th of Av. As usual, we started with a review of yesterday's findings, adding some points here and there for clarification. We then took another stab at elucidating Metzudas David, and although we gained greater clarity, we still didn't manage to figure him out. We then read a huge paradigm-proposing peirush from the Malbim which we attempted to work out. This led us to review one of my favorite passages in Saadia Gaon's introduction, which in turn, led to a discussion of what Mishlei is doing, how it's doing it, and what "mussar" and "tochachah" are in Malbim's lingo. Sadly, we didn't have time to complete our analysis of the Malbim. All in all, we had some great ideas, but no conclusions beyond yesterday's excellent ideas.---מקורות:משלי טו:לגתרגום ופירוש רס"גנוה לשוםמצודת דודמלבי"םרס"ג - הקדמה לספר משלי-----The Torah Content for the month of September is sponsored by Meir Areman in loving memory of his grandmother, Esther Chasha bas Meir Gedalya, who recently passed away on the 25th of Av. If I had to name the subject of Sefer Mishlei, I'd say it's yiras Hashem (as indicated in 1:7), and our pasuk defines yiras Hashem according to Mishlei. In elucidating this, we also defined the levels of yirah below and above Mishlei. The main idea we came up with, reflected in Saadia Gaon, presents one of the best arguments for why we all need to learn Mishlei. We even came up with a second interpretation that provides a nice mechanism for taking what comes at you in life and turning it into a source of insight and benefit. Tomorrow (בג"ה) we'll delve into the meforshim. ---מקורות:משלי טו:לגתרגום ופירוש רס"גזרחיה חןתרגום כתוביםמשלי א:ז; לא:לרמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר המדע, הלכות יסודי התורה ב:א-ב; ד:יבמצודת דוד-----The Torah Content for the month of September is sponsored by Meir Areman in loving memory of his grandmother, Esther Chasha bas Meir Gedalya, who recently passed away on the 25th of Av.
