My name is Rabbi Matt Schneeweiss, and this is the hub for all of my shiurim (classes) on Sefer Mishlei, a.k.a. The Book of Proverbs! Generally speaking we will follow the approach to Mishlei outlined by Saadia Gaon who views Mishlei as a guide for intelligent decision-making in everyday life with the goal of maximizing long-term pleasure and minimizing long-term pain. Each shiur will typically focus on one pasuk (verse), which we will attempt to analyze on our own before turning to the meforshim (commentators). If you have any questions feel free to email me at rabbischneeweiss at gmail. Thanks for listening!

We found support for one of our approaches in the Ralbag. We then resumed working on Metzudas David and came up with a nice idea that built off of the previous pasuk. We then took up Saadia Gaon, which we found insightful but didn't completely understand. We concluded with the Ri Nachmias - a high-quality commentary that we often overlook. Great ideas, as always! After going down a little rabbit hole about Chanukah, we did a quick overview of Saadia Gaon's commentary, just to get the flavor, then learned Ralbag and Malbim. Fortunately for us, this one had a lot of "ins" and we quickly developed several of our own approaches before learning two approaches from the meforshim. Unfortunately, we had to end shiur before learning the many other viable approaches the meforshim had to offer. So much Mishlei to learn, and so little time to learn it.-----מקורות:משלי יז:טמצודת ציון/דודתרגום רס"גתרגום כתוביםרמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר המדע, הלכות תשובה ב:הרמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר המדע, הלכות דעות ז:ז-חרבינו יונה-----If you'd like to sponsor my Torah content, please let me know! The only truly new approach we tackled was Saadia Gaon, who begins with a highly structured reading of the pasuk in the nigleh, then turns to the nistar. Since I had not prepared this ahead of time, I may have gotten some points wrong. I call "straight-up advice." No mashalim, no cryptic wording, no riddles - just proverbs telling you what to do and why. My question going into this was whether there would be any correlation between the style of presentation and the quality or depth of the ideas. Judging by this morning's analysis, the answer seems to be in the negative. We had just as many questions here as we usually do, and the ideas we developed felt completely Mishleic. After briefly getting the peshat of the introductory 25:1, we analyzed 25:2, which is stylistically different from most of the Mishlei we've learned over the past 4+ years (as will be the case for the remainder of the sefer). We came up with a few half-baked approaches, one of which was solid. I shared my own intuition which ended up being supported by Metzudas David, and the other solid approach was similar to what the Ralbag said. I'm curious to see what we find in the other meforshim, but we'll have to wait until after Rosh ha'Shanah for that.---מקורות:משלי כה:א-בתרגום רס"גמצודת ציון/דודרלב"ג-----The Torah Content for the month of September is sponsored by Meir Areman in loving memory of his grandmother, Esther Chasha bas Meir Gedalya, who recently passed away on the 25th of Av. As usual, we started with a review of yesterday's findings, adding some points here and there for clarification. We then took another stab at elucidating Metzudas David, and although we gained greater clarity, we still didn't manage to figure him out. We then read a huge paradigm-proposing peirush from the Malbim which we attempted to work out. This led us to review one of my favorite passages in Saadia Gaon's introduction, which in turn, led to a discussion of what Mishlei is doing, how it's doing it, and what "mussar" and "tochachah" are in Malbim's lingo. Sadly, we didn't have time to complete our analysis of the Malbim. All in all, we had some great ideas, but no conclusions beyond yesterday's excellent ideas.---מקורות:משלי טו:לגתרגום ופירוש רס"גנוה לשוםמצודת דודמלבי"םרס"ג - הקדמה לספר משלי-----The Torah Content for the month of September is sponsored by Meir Areman in loving memory of his grandmother, Esther Chasha bas Meir Gedalya, who recently passed away on the 25th of Av. If I had to name the subject of Sefer Mishlei, I'd say it's yiras Hashem (as indicated in 1:7), and our pasuk defines yiras Hashem according to Mishlei. In elucidating this, we also defined the levels of yirah below and above Mishlei. The main idea we came up with, reflected in Saadia Gaon, presents one of the best arguments for why we all need to learn Mishlei. We even came up with a second interpretation that provides a nice mechanism for taking what comes at you in life and turning it into a source of insight and benefit. The challenge was that I've given so many classes on so many pesukim in this chapter that I knew it would be hard to find chidushim (new ideas) I hadn't seen before. Thankfully, we had a powerhouse crew tonight, consisting of longtime Mishlei students alongside new faces, and we managed to come up with nine original interpretations, plus two more from the meforshim. After a quick review and some elaboration on Saadia Gaon, I shared my interpretation, which we examined through three sources: (1) Meiri's commentary on Mishlei 10:3, (2) the chapter of Moreh ha'Nevuchim that Rambam considered most important to pay attention to, and (3) the commentary of R' Sheishes ben Yitzchak Gerondi on our pasuk. As usual, we covered some fundamental methodological points along the way and (I hope) walked away with a few eminently practical ideas.-----מקורות:משלי טז:ארמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר המדע, הלכות דעות ב:דמאירי - משלי י:גרמב"ם - מורה הנבוכים ב:מחר' ששת בן יצחק גרונדיאבות ב:ד-----With gratitude to Hashem, I'm pleased to announce that I am officially listed as a teacher on YUTorah! I chose the one pasuk from Chapter 16 that we skipped this year. Since this was a special shiur with some Mishleic neophytes, I decided to be a bit more explicit about Mishlei methodology than usual. We began by translating the pasuk, raising all the questions, and then developing our own theories. One of those theories lined up with Saadia Gaon's commentary, so we pivoted to analyzing that instead. I was glad to see that I wasn't the only one who was bothered by the anomalous and theologically difficult nature of the statement. We came up with more questions than I anticipated, and more ideas as well. After sharing my own approach which I supported with the Rambam and the GRA, we learned Rabbeinu Yonah's context-based approach, then called it a night. We then reviewed the approaches we took yesterday, learning through similar explanations in the meforshim. I then shared the approach of my rebbi, Rabbi Moskowitz zt"l, based on Rashi. We concluded by raising a question on the approach taken by the majority of the meforshim, but were happily sidetracked by my favorite Rambam in Sefer Zera'im. (Well, the second half, anyway.) Not only that, but I'd bet money on the fact that this pasuk applies to current events involving POTUS. We set out to see if we could find NEW ideas, and we did, but I ended up going over Rabbeinu Yonah's idea just the same.
