My name is Rabbi Matt Schneeweiss, and this is the hub for all of my shiurim (classes) on Sefer Mishlei, a.k.a. The Book of Proverbs! Generally speaking we will follow the approach to Mishlei outlined by Saadia Gaon who views Mishlei as a guide for intelligent decision-making in everyday life with the goal of maximizing long-term pleasure and minimizing long-term pain. Each shiur will typically focus on one pasuk (verse), which we will attempt to analyze on our own before turning to the meforshim (commentators). If you have any questions feel free to email me at rabbischneeweiss at gmail. Thanks for listening!

We then learned some meforshim which ALSO overlapped yesterday's explanations, before doing a somewhat deep-dive into the Meiri's understanding of the word תפילה. We concluded with R' Sheishes's practical idea about tefilah, paired with an excerpt from R' Eliezer Berkovitz on tefilas shav. All in all, I was delighted to see how my favorite subject of Mishlei was able to shed light on one of my other favorite subjects: tefilah!-----מקורות:משלי טו:כטמיוחס לרד"קאבות ב:דרד"ק - בראשית ד:ג-דר"י נחמיאשרבינו יונהמאירי - משלי טו:ח,כטר' ששת בן יצחק גרונדירמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר המדע, הלכות דעות ב:גRabbi Eliezer Berkovitz – Is Prayer Answered? I was glad to see that I wasn't the only one who was bothered by the anomalous and theologically difficult nature of the statement. We came up with more questions than I anticipated, and more ideas as well. After sharing my own approach which I supported with the Rambam and the GRA, we learned Rabbeinu Yonah's context-based approach, then called it a night. This was a great year of Mishlei learning, and I look forward to resuming towards the beginning of the 2025-2026 school year (בג"ה). -----מקורות:משלי טז:לבמצודת ציון/דודרלב"גרבינו יונהרמב"ם - מורה הנבוכים ב:מח; ג:כחר"י אבן כספי-----SPECIAL OFFER: I'm planning to write more on my Substack this summer than I have in the past few years, including a ton of paid subscriber posts I've been eager to publish. The questions on the pasuk were deceptively straightforward, but when we attempted to learn it, we got several 80% explanations which we just couldn't develop into full ideas. We finally managed to bring one idea across the finish line, but it was a real work out!-----מקורות:משלי טז:כחמצודת ציון/דודתרגום רס"ג-----This week's Torah content has been sponsored anonymously. Even I don't know who the sponsor is, but their money is going to a good cause: purchasing the new edition of the Siddur Otzar ha'Tefilos. People have asked me what the best tefilah resource is—and hands down, it's this siddur. The only problem is that the original printing was pretty horrendous. I've been waiting two decades for it to be reprinted, and it finally has! Now I just need to figure out how to get a copy. Even after going through several translations and minimalist meforshim, we felt no closer to forming our own view on how to READ the pasuk, let alone explain it. But this provided us with a unique opportunity to practice learning a pasuk we couldn't confidently read. Miraculously, nearly everyone in the shiur arrived at a similar idea - each with a different nuance - and this enabled us to make sense of what the pasuk was saying. I was bothered yesterday by the lack of specificity in our approaches. My Mishleic intuition told me that we were hovering around the general topic, but hadn't yet discovered the chidush (novel insight). We engaged in a VERY in-depth review of what we covered and ended up hitting a goldmine of insight into the nature of interpersonal conflict. While I'm still not sure whether we ended up with a complete explanation of the pasuk itself, that's almost unimportant to me. I feel like we really leveled up in our understanding of this (unfortunately) important topic, and I'm already eager for the next pasuk about strife, whenever that may be!-----מקורות:משלי טו:יחמלבי"םמאירירש"י-----The Torah content for the entire month of February has been sponsored by Y.K. with gratitude to Rabbi Schneeweiss for providing a clear and easily accessible path to personal growth via his reliably interesting and inspiring Torah content.-----If you've gained from what you've learned here, please consider contributing to my Patreon at www.patreon.com/rabbischneeweiss.
