My name is Rabbi Matt Schneeweiss, and this is the hub for all of my shiurim (classes) on Tefilah (Prayer) and related topics, such as Tehilim (Psalms) and Berachos (Blessings)! The shiurim I upload here are given in a variety of formats with different lengths and intended for different audiences. The common theme which unites all of these shiurim is our focus on strengthening our relationship with Hashem through Avodah she'ba'Lev (Service of the Heart). If you have any questions feel free to email me at rabbischneeweiss at gmail. Thanks for listening!

Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text!Length: 57 minutesSynopsis: Tonight (5/28/25),  in our Wednesday night Tehilim shiur, we concluded our experimental learn-through of Sforno and R' Elia di Nola on our perek. We began by clarifying Sforno's nuanced take on Torah u'Mada, then explored his view of the role Moshiach will play in educating humanity. We wrapped up with a summary of the perek's purpose, the flow of the four Bnei Korach maskilim we've studied over the past few months, and an operational definition of what a maskil is. This three-part series may not have been our typical Tehilim fare, but I certainly found it interesting, and I hope you did too!-----מקורות:תהלים פרק מהספורנור' אליה די נולהשבת דף קמה עמוד ב - קמו עמוד א-----The Torah content from now through Isru Chag Shavuos is sponsored by Rabbi Chaim and Sara Weiss in honor of the yahrzeit of our beloved rebbi, Rabbi Morton Moskowitz zt"l (on the 28th of Iyyar). After a recap and a re-pitch of the perek, we continued on, making past the pivot point into the next section. It was ... interesting! We definitely gained some ideas about how to engage in debate, as well as a unique model of Torah u'Mada that I've never seen before, but which resonates with me. Next time, we'll get into the Moshiach stuff and aim to wrap up the perek.-----מקורות:תהלים פרק מהרמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר שופטים, הלכות מלכים ומלחמות יב:ד-השם ספר המדע: הלכות תשובה ט:גספורנור' אליה די נולה-----The Torah content from now through Isru Chag Shavuos is sponsored by Rabbi Chaim and Sara Weiss in honor of the yahrzeit of our beloved rebbi, Rabbi Morton Moskowitz zt"l (on the 28th of Iyyar). This was due, in part, to the fact that I didn't have my usual chavrusa this week AND didn't have time to prepare shiur. Nevertheless, we reviewed what we did last time and refined the theory I came up with, running it through the whole perek and bringing it down to the level of the practical. We found support in Saadia Gaon and got some nice Tehilim methodology from Hoil Moshe. I'm happy with how our analysis turned out, and I'm eager to start whatever we take up next!-----מקורות:תהלים פרק מדמצודת דוד - תהלים מד:כא-כברד"ק שםדברים ח:ז-כהואיל משהפירוש רס"ג-----The total cost of producing my five podcasts in 2024 came to $1,455—an expense I would have otherwise had to cover myself. Yeah, yeah, I know that we had STARTED Tehilim 42 last time and didn't even get to the analysis, but that was over a month ago, and most of the shiur attendees wanted to start something new. Plus, I started learning this perek over Yom Tov and I was REALLY excited to dive deeper into it! As usual, we spent most of the time working on the translation. We then identified the pivot point(s), which was relatively easy. Finally, in the last five minutes of the shiur, I revealed my subversive theory about the perek - or should I say, my theory that the perek IS subversive! We'll have to wait until next time to see whether my theory is supported by a closer reading of the text and the meforshim.-----מקורות:תהלים פרק מדArtscrollRobert Alter-----The total cost of producing my five podcasts in 2024 came to $1,455—an expense I would have otherwise had to cover myself. Send me a text!Length: 57 minutesSynopsis: Tonight (3/19/25), in our Wednesday night tefilah shiur, we began learning the perek before the one we did last time. We had seen opinions that 43 is part of 42, and the proof definitely seems to be in the pudding, so we're going to proceed on that assumption. The translation was a bit quicker than usual, since so many phrases were familiar. We only got a little bit into our analysis, noticing the difficulties of the perek and voicing some intuitions about its themes. Next time we'll engage in some REAL analysis! Send me a text!Length: 56 minutesSynopsis: Tonight (3/12/25), in lieu of our Wednesday night tefilah shiur, we took up a Purim-related tefilah topic: Esther's tefilah! "But wait," you might object, "where in the Megillah does it say that Esther davened?" The answer: it doesn't—at least not explicitly. But the Midrashim and midrashic Targumim contain several references to her tefilah, and we analyzed the Targum Rishon on Esther 5:1, where her tefilah is spelled out in detail. I wasn't sure if we'd arrive at an understanding, but one of the guys in the shiur offered a great explanation, which I supplemented with my own insights to help us implement Esther's strategy in our own davening.-----מקורות:רמב"ם - משנה תורה: הקדמה, מצוות דרבנןאסתר ד:טו - ה:אתרגום ראשון לאסתר ה:ארלב"ג - שמות יז (סוף פרשת בשלח)תרגום שני לאסתר ה:א-----The Torah content for this week has been sponsored by my friend, Rabbi Dr. Elie Feder. After reviewing and slightly expanding upon our explanation of what kavanah to have when we say Hashem's name, we delved into a question that tends to escape the notice of many Jews: that throughout davening and in many berachos, we switch back and forth between talking to Hashem in the 2nd person and referring to Him in the 3rd person. We developed our own answer, then examined answers from three Rishonim. I guarantee that if you learn these ideas and say your berachos with them in mind, you'll have a wild and enlightening experience.-----מקורות:רמב"ם - מורה הנבוכים א:סארשב"א - שו"ת חלק ה סימן נברבינ בחיי בן אר - שולחן של ארבעמחזור ויטרי - סימן פח-----The Torah content for this week has been sponsored by Rifka Kaplan-Peck in tribute to the Bibas family. Send me a text!Length: 57 minutesSynopsis: This morning (2/14/25), in our tefilah-focused Machshavah Lab series for women, I decided on a last-minute change of plans. After reviewing the main ideas and takeaways we've developed so far, we went back to the beginning of the berachah with the INTENT to analyze the phrase, "Baruch atoh Hashem," but we "only" ended up analyzing what we mean by "Hashem." I now know why I initially decided to skip this part: turns out, it's WAY too easy to go WAY in-depth on what we mean by "Hashem"! Since it's Parashas Yisro, I decided to take this up by reading and briefly explaining the first six halachos of the Rambam's Hilchos Yesodei ha'Torah, in which he elucidates the two most important mitzvos in the Torah: "Anochi" and "Lo Yihyeh Lecha." And before we knew it, shiur was over! Next time (בג"ה), we'll analyze "Baruch" and "atoh," then pick up in the middle of the berachah where we left off.-----מקורות:ברכת אבות נוסח אשכנזעץ יוסףספרונו - דברים י:יזרמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר המדע, הלכות יסודי התורה א:א-ו-----The Torah content for the entire month of February has been sponsored by Y.K. with gratitude to Rabbi Schneeweiss for providing a clear and easily accessible path to personal growth via his reliably interesting and inspiring Torah content.-----Substack: rabbischneeweiss.substack.com/Patreon: patreon.com/rabbischneeweissYouTube Channel: youtube.com/rabbischneeweissInstagram: instagram.com/rabbischneeweiss/"The Stoic Jew" Podcast: thestoicjew.buzzsprout.com"Machshavah Lab" Podcast: machshavahlab.buzzsprout.com"The Mishlei Podcast": mishlei.buzzsprout.com"Rambam Bekius" Podcast: rambambekius.buzzsprout.com"The Tefilah Podcast": tefilah.buzzsprout.comOld Blog: kolhaseridim.blogspot.com/WhatsApp Content Hub (where I post all my content and announce my public classes): https://chat.whatsapp.com/GEB1EPIAarsELfHWuI2k0HAmazon Wishlist: amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/Y72CSP86S24W?ref_=wl_sharel

Send me a text!Length: 56 minutesSynopsis: Tonight (2/5/24), in our Wednesday night Tehilim shiur, we continued our analysis of the perek we began last week. Day 2 of learning a new perek is like a box of chocolates: you never know what you're going to get. I was actually a bit worried that we wouldn't get ANYWHERE tonight, as sometimes happens on Day 2, but I was pleasantly surprised. We came up with three general approaches which all overlapped, and we developed a few other ideas as well. I'm encouraged by the progress we've made and I'm fairly confident we'll continue developing these ideas next week when we start looking into the meforshim.-----מקורות:תהלים פרק סהרד"ק - תהלים סה:אמלבי"ם - תהלים סה:אThe Torah content for the entire month of February has been sponsored by Y.K. with gratitude to Rabbi Schneeweiss for providing a clear and easily accessible path to personal growth via his reliably interesting and inspiring Torah content.-----If you've gained from what you've learned here, please consider contributing to my Patreon at www.patreon.com/rabbischneeweiss. I chose this one because of the famous opening line (which is central to the Rambam's writings about praising Hashem). As usual, we spent much of this first session reading and translating the perek, and BOY WAS IT A TEETHBREAKER! The words, grammar, and syntax in this perek are NOT simple! Still, we hobbled together a translation, then stuck with Robert Alter's translation for our analysis. We identified a viable pivot point and raised a bunch of questions. Next time (בג"ה), we'll try to develop a theory about the theme or the main idea, either on our own or with the help of meforshim.-----מקורות:תהלים פרק סה-----The Torah content for the rest of January is sponsored by Avital, “to continued growth, learning and clarity IY”H. Send me a text!Length: 1 hour 16 minutesSynopsis: This morning (1/10/24), in our tefilah-focused Machshavah Lab series for women, we continued our analysis of the first berachah of the Amidah. Due to personal circumstances and a reconsideration of halachic priorities, we deviated from our original plan of focusing on the conclusion of the berachah. Instead, we began analyzing each word and phrase in the berachah. We started by discussing why this approach is halachically advisable. After reviewing our questions, we explored the underrated commentary of the Eitz Yosef, which proved to be so rich that we only managed to unpack the words "Elokei Avraham, Elokei Yitzchak, vElokei Yaakov." Judging by how this went, I'm really looking forward to learning the rest of the berachah!-----מקורות:ברכת אבות נוסח אשכנזשולחן ערוך אורח חיים קא:אמשנה ברורהערוך השולחןעץ יוסףאבן עזרא - קהלת ה:אמצודת דוד - א' דברי הימים כח:טרמב"ם - מורה הנבוכים א:נרמב"ם - ספר המדע, הלכות יסודי התורה הקדמה; ה:יאשמות ג:ו,טו; ד:הרש"י - דברים ו:ד-----It's a new year on the Gregorian calendar, a new year of my life (I turn 41 on January 10th), and a new opportunity for sponsorships! We began by reviewing the essence of what we covered last time, but in a much slower, clearer, and thought-out manner than last time. As we reviewed the sources, we sharpened last week's approach. We then read an excerpt from R' Joseph B. Soloveitchik's "From There Shall You Seek" which not only confirmed that we were on the right track, but also gave us a lot more to think about. I'd say we now have a solid theory in the works! Next time, we'll revisit the Rav again in an effort to gain more clarity, and then tackle some of the pesukim which the berachos of Ahavah Rabbah and Ahavas Olam are based on Soloveitchik - "From There Shall You Seek" (pp.153-157) -----This week's Torah content has been sponsored l'zecher nishmas Yosef Yoshayahu ben Yechezkel Eliezer, whose yahrzeit is on the 3rd of Teves. What, exactly, does this entail? That's what we spent the first 20 minutes of shiur discussing: how can we get the most out of our analysis, given our temporal limitations, and what should our objectives be? After we settled on 5-6 objectives, we translated the berachah, compared the standard nusach Ashkenaz with three old nuschaos, raised a ton of questions and problems, and did a quick read-through of the Abudarham. Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text!Length: 1 hourSynopsis: Tonight (1/1/24), in our Wednesday night tefilah shiur, we took up a question that was sparked by a debate I had on Facebook about whether Hashem loves us unconditionally which, itself, was sparked by the popular Israeli song "Tamid Ohev Oti." We began with a surface-level analysis of the two berachos before krias Shema in which we talk about God's love for Israel, raising some basic and powerful questions. We then quickly familiarized ourselves with the source-pesukim cited by three Rishonic commentaries on tefilah. We concluded with a quick run-through of R' Hasdai Crescas's analysis of what it means to say that Hashem has "joy," "pleasure," and "love." Although we emerged with a working definition of Hashem's love, our REAL analysis will have to wait until next time, when we delve into the pesukim that form the basis of the berachos.-----מקורות:תמיד אוהב אותי – ששון איפרם שאולובאהבה רבה (נוסח אשכנז)אהבת עולם (נוסח אשכנז)אבודרהםראב"ןר"י בר יקרר' חסדאי קרשקש אור ה' ב:ה -----The Torah content through the end of Chanukah is sponsored by Feiga W., with the following dedication: "With deep gratitude to my parents, who taught me to seek out opportunities for growth—and to Rabbi Schneeweiss, whose shiurim are exactly that."-----If you've gained from what you've learned here, please consider contributing to my Patreon at www.patreon.com/rabbischneeweiss. We learned through two commentaries on the Rambam who offered explanations: the Kesef Mishneh and the Yad Peshuta. Believe me, I didn't intend for these to be highly technical halachic shiurim (which is usually the type of thing I'd reserve for my Rambam Bekius podcast, not my Machshavah Lab shiurim), but alas - that's where we ended up. After reviewing our updated translation, going over a few insights I accrued since last week, and examining three ancient nuschaos, we delved into the Abudarham's commentary on the first three words of the berachah. He made four points, and we made it through 3.5 of them (leaving one major question unanswered). We began with a 15-minute review of my "MMMMMMM!" method of tefilah analysis. After that, we spent the rest of the shiur figuring out the reading and translation of the berachah - a task more difficult than people might imagine! Send me a text!Length: 46 minutesSynopsis: This morning (11/8/24), in our tefilah-focused Machshavah Lab series for women, we began a new topic: the nusach ha'tefilah (liturgy). We began by reviewing the relevant facts: what the mitzvah of tefilah from the Torah entailed, how Ezra and his Beis Din changed it, and the historical reasons why. I then presented my understanding of the REAL reasons why tefilah desperately needed this change, which I supported by drawing upon Rav Hirsch's commentary on Migdal Bavel. We didn't have time to start the major question I had hoped to get to, which is: If Ezra and his Beis Din instituted a standardized nusach, then what is the origin of the wide variety of nuschaos we have today?-----מקורות:רמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר אהבה, הלכות תפלה וברכת כהנים א:דמעשה רקח שםמלבי"ם - נחמיה יג:כדרמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר אהבה, הלכות קריאת שמע א:זרמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר אהבה, הלכות ברכות א:ה-ורש"ר הירש - בראשית יא:ז-----This week's Torah content has been sponsored by Yael Weiss. Picking up where we left off last time, we reviewed the Rav's explanation of the machlokess between the Rambam and Ramban, bringing support from "Rav scholars" for the problems we identified last time. We then read Rav Asher Weiss's analysis of the Ramban's view, as well as the Aruch ha'Shulchan's treatment, and ultimately ended up with our own assessment and hot take. All in all, I believe there were six approaches that were considered for understanding Ramban's view. Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text!Length: 1 hour 22 minutesSynopsis: This morning (9/20/24), in our NEW Machshavah Lab series for women called "Tefilah Reexamined," we began with a comprehensive review of Parts 1 and 2, then delved into the Ramban's critiques of the Rambam's stance on tefilah. After reading through the Ramban, we compared and contrasted his approach with the Rambam's, which - at this point - seem worlds apart. We concluded by reading the Rav's creative explanation of that machlokess. I say "creative" because I love the idea, but I don't think it's true to the Rambam. Next week, I hope to present an alternative understanding.-----מקורות:רמב"ם - משנה תורה: הקדמה, מנין המצוות, עשה הרמב"ם - מורה הנבוכים ג:נארמב"ן - השגות לספר המצוות, עשה הThe Rav on Tefilah: An Anthology of Teachings by Rabbi Joseph B. We learned through his commentary at a leisurely pace, with lots of help from R' Moshe Kravetz's footnotes and R' Elia di Nola's commentary. During the last 15 minutes of shiur we worked on coming up with a unified theory. It feels like we're really close, but not quite there. We have one Wednesday night Tehilim shiur left before Rosh ha'Shanah, so we'll plan to devote that shiur to another attempt, and perhaps we'll see what some of the commentaries on the Mussaf of Rosh ha'Shanah say.-----מקורות:תהלים פרק כדספורנושיעורי רב עובדיה ספורנו-----The Torah content for the first month of the new school year has been sponsored by the Brevique BrewLid. We then delved into the Rambam's Allegory of the Palace in the Guide for the Perplexed, in which he presents his definition of "avodah" (Divine service) and "avodah she'ba'lev" (service of the heart/mind), among other important concepts. We came up with a theory that explains the Rambam's statement in the Sefer ha'Mitzvos that "avodah" encompasses ALL mitzvos in general, as well as tefilah and Torah study in specific. Next time (בג"ה) we'll contrast this model of tefilah with that of the Ramban.-----מקורות:רמב"ם - משנה תורה: הקדמה, מנין המצוות, עשה הרמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר אהבה, הלכות תפלה וברכת כהנים הקדמה; א:א-דרמב"ם - ספר המצוות: הקדמה, עשה הרלב"ג - דברים ו:יגרלב"ג ביאור המילות - שמות כג:כהרמב"ם - מורה הנבוכים ג:נא-----The Torah content for the first month of the new school year has been sponsored by the Brevique BrewLid. Since I'm designing and teaching a year-long course on tefilah for high school students, I decided this summer to investigate the whole subject of tefilah afresh, from the ground up. We'll begin with a deep dive into what the mitzvah of tefilah is, and we'll see where that takes us. In this morning's shiur, we went through the basic facts from the Rambam, then focused on analyzing his presentation in the Sefer ha'Mitzvos. We raised a bunch of questions, then took one important first step based on the Ralbag. Next time (בג"ה), we'll attempt to take an even greater step based on the Rambam himself.
