Send me a text!Length: 1 hour 35 minutesSynopsis: Tonight (6/4/26), in our Thursday night Machshavah Lab series for women, was not a shiur but an exploration with an agenda (which I explain toward the beginning and won't divulge here). We read the famous aggadah about the four Tannaim who entered Pardes - R. Akiva, Acher, Ben Zoma, and Ben Azzai - along with several other sources that comment directly or indirectly on it. Our goal was not to conduct a comprehensive analysis, but to read through the facts and think aloud about what we were reading. We certainly accomplished that goal. What remains to be done is to fully develop an understanding of the fate met by each of the four in a manner that enlightens us about the correct and incorrect paths to truth.-----מקורות:תלמוד בבלי חגיגה דף יד עמוד ברמב"ם - פירוש המשניות חגיגה ב:ארמב"ם - מורה הנבוכים א:לא-לברשב"ץ - פירוש להגדה של פסח: ארבעה בנים-----The Torah content for this month has been sponsored by Meir Areman, l'zeicher nishmas Zelda bas Ziesel, his grandmother, whose yahrzeit is on the 21st of Sivan.-----If you've gained from what you've learned here, please consider supporting my work via Patreon, Venmo, Zelle, or PayPal — links below. Pardes Shlomo Daily: On Rav Moshe Wolfson ztz"l
משיחת א' דר"ח אלול ה'תשמ"ב ל"הנחה פרטית" או התרגום ללה"ק של השיחה: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=24-05-2026 Synopsis Based on what is explained in Tikkunei Zohar and Pardes, it is understood that in the correct order of the nekudos, shuruk comes before kubutz. Going forward, this should be corrected. (As for the fact that there is another order in nekudos, it is like the many disagreements in Shas, where both opinions were given to Moshe at Sinai, but the practical halacha follows only one.) Additionally, our Rebbeim instructed specifically to teach the letters separately, the nekudos separately, and only then join the two together. For example,, one should first teach the form of the letter Alef without any vowelization. As my father-in-law, the Rebbe, explained, when one teaches a child “kamatz Alef, uh,” it is linked to the Alef of “Anochi Hashem Elokecha,” and our Sages taught that Anochi is an acronym for “Ana Nafshi Kesovis Yehovis” (“I wrote and gave Myself”), where Ana refers to Hashem's Essence and Being. Accordingly, it is understood that the pure, simple essence of Alef – the Alufo shel Olam – is expressed specifically in the letter Alef without vowelization (whereas a vowel already imparts a particular form). It is precisely in this way that the Alufo shel Olam is implanted in a child's heart from a very young age.Excerpt from sichah of 30 Menachem-Av 5742 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=24-05-2026 לזכות הינדא לאה בת חי' שרה שתחי' וויינבוים ליום ההולדת שלה ביום א' דחג השבועותלשנת ברכה והצלחה, ואריכות ימים ושנים טובות

Our conversation about Jewish interpretation of the Bible continues today on Foundations, and we'll be looking at the method called Derash. This method looks for alternate or greater lessons gleaned from the text, while never compromising the main meaning of the text. On Foundations today we’ll continue on the theme of last time, that being the Jewish methods of interpreting Scripture. The method we’ll talk about this time is Remez, where there’s a hint of something deeper to search for.Your support sends the gospel to every corner of Australia through broadcast, online and print media: https://www.vision.org.au/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The topic we’ll be digging into today on Foundations is that of hermeneutics ?' the interpretation of the Bible. In Jewish culture there are four methods and we’ll look at the first one today. → Watch on YouTube → Detailed Show Notes → Timestamps: (00:00) An overview of the The Old Testament.(04:27) Bryce breaks down the Old Testament into nine time periods.(09:41) Canonization and the creation of the Greek Septuagint. The authors of the New Testament quoted the Greek version of the Old Testament. The version that Jesus used is unknown.(13:01) The Old Testament is not one book written by a single author. It is an anthology of books written over centuries by individuals. Later authors sometimes rejected and edited earlier authors. Remnants remain that multiple Gods participated in the creation. The first word in Genesis invites us to consider the Grand Pre-mortal Council.(20:03) The creation accounts address why the world was created, not how. The purpose of the earth is to create eternal families.(33:17) Ancient cultures shared the creation story at their temples during the New Year. The time-honored principle of marriage and family are connected to the purposes of creation.(36:21) Chaos played a role in the formation of the earth. God transformed unorganized matter into something beautiful. The cosmology of the Bible invites modern readers to think about scripture differently.(41:18) The temple takes us to the creation and the creation takes us to the temple because each us back to God.(48:25) Moses 2 and 3 can be read as a single account. This is contrasted with the documentary hypothesis, where scholars believe Genesis 1 and 2 come from two different sources because of differences in the text.(54:21) Seven eternal lessons in the creation account invite us to find success during our time on earth. Finding balance between work and rest.(1:00:29) Seek spiritual things first, then temporal.(1:01:50) Cherubim and a flaming sword foiled Satan's plan and preserved the space between the trees. God protected our probationary estate. God knew from the very beginning that we would sin and need time to repent.(1:13:11) Satan's Plan B is to get us to take away our own or someone else's probationary state. Toxic perfectionism is addressed. Continual progression is what matters to God.(1:16:55) The river flowing out of Eden as a symbol for the division found in mortality. We must find ways to be unified.(1:23:08) Instead of focusing on what we are missing, our focus should be on all our blessings.(1:28:23) Pardes is an acronym to describe the ways of reading scripture: Peshat, remez, derash, and sod. The plain reading (peshat), allegorical or hidden reading (remez), the moral or imperative sense or application (derash), and the mystical, esoteric, or temple reading (sod).(1:30:13) The rib in Genesis 2.22 symbolizes partnership in marriage.(1:38:44) “Helper” or ʿēzer as found in Genesis 2.18 has often been misread and used to subjugate women. The term translated as “help meet” actually denotes the kind of powerful help that God gives. Eve's position next to Adam places both in a setting as having dominion over the whole earth. Eve is called “Zoe” in the LXX, the mother of all the living ones. There is no kingdom without Eve.(1:47:02) Fig leaves can represent covering our sins with bigger and bigger lies.(1:52:47) Garments are a piece of the temple that we wear to remind us of our connection to the Savior's atonement. → For more of Bryce Dunford’s podcast classes, click here. → Enroll in Institute → YouTube → Apple Podcasts → Spotify → Amazon Music → Facebook The post Ep 354 | Genesis 1-2; Moses 2-3; Abraham 4-5, Come Follow Me 2026 (January 12-18) appeared first on LDS Scripture Teachings.
What does Jewish leadership demand in uncertain times? In this episode, a conversation on Jewish leadership and communal responsibility explores how Torah values shape philanthropy and public life today. Zvi Hirschfield speaks with Pardes alumnus Marc Baker about moral vision, collective obligation, and translating Jewish texts into action, reflecting on how learning, community, and purpose guide Jewish leadership in a complex contemporary moment.
In this in-depth Bible teaching, we explore two critical Hebraisms that unlock major New Testament passages: the Key of the House of David (Isaiah 22) and “All shall be taught by God” (Isaiah 54). First, we examine the Old Testament background of the Key of David and how it reveals delegated royal authority under the king. This foundation allows us to correctly understand Jesus' words to the Church of Philadelphia in Revelation 3 and His absolute authority to open and shut doors of access, ministry, and the Kingdom itself. Next, we tackle Isaiah 54:13 and its direct quotation by Jesus in John 6. By understanding Jewish interpretive methods (PaRDeS), we expose how this passage is often misused to support Calvinistic theology. When read in its proper Jewish and prophetic context, Jesus is not teaching mystical election, but showing that God draws people through Scripture itself. Those who hear and learn from the Father through the Word come to Christ by faith. This study dismantles common misunderstandings about divine drawing, salvation, and election, and reaffirms the biblical truth of salvation by faith alone in Christ alone. SCRIPTURE REFERENCES: Isaiah 22 Isaiah 53–54 John 6 Revelation 3 Matthew 16 Acts 2 Psalm 2 1 Corinthians 15

#180 - Have you ever wondered what happens when a deep love for Ireland, masterful storytelling, and biblical foundations merge? That's exactly what unfolds in this captivating conversation with John Leonard, the creative mind behind the Wayfinder series – a fantasy adventure saga that bridges ancient myths with biblical narratives.Growing up in rural Colorado as the eldest of four siblings, John shares how his close relationship with his brother shaped his early years through sports and friendly competition. His journey took a fascinating turn in college when he discovered rugby, serving as team captain for four years at Colorado Mesa University. This passion later connected him deeply to Irish culture when he seized an opportunity to study abroad in Belfast.John's eight-mile walk from Dublin to the Neolithic site of Newgrange became a transformative experience, allowing him to absorb Ireland's countryside in a way impossible from behind a car window. "Walking that road was just something else," he recalls, describing how the sideways rain, winding paths, and ancient hamlets with thatched roofs transported him through time. His vivid descriptions of Irish pub culture – where storytellers gather, musicians spontaneously form bands, and strangers share life stories over shared drinks – reveal how deeply Ireland's storytelling tradition influenced his own writing. The heart of our conversation explores John's Wayfinder series, particularly his first book "Dawn of Destiny." This unique fantasy saga fills the narrative gap between the Tower of Babel and Abraham's story in Genesis, weaving together Mesopotamian, Akkadian, Egyptian, and other Bronze Age cultural myths into a cohesive narrative that respects biblical accounts. Using the rabbinical teaching method of Pardes, John creates stories with multiple levels of meaning – from surface-level adventure to deeper theological symbolism.Whether you're fascinated by ancient mythology, interested in creative approaches to biblical narratives, or simply love a good conversation about the writing journey, John's story will inspire you to see adventure as more than just reaching a destination. As he beautifully puts it: "The adventure is the journey in between...the relationships, the foundational aspects that form who you are along that journey." In this episode, Zvi Hirschfield and Rabbi Michael Hattin explore Parshat Eikev and the deep connection between the Jewish people and the Land of Israel. They discuss Moshe's cautionary tales, the role of the land as both a blessing and a barometer of the nation's spiritual life, and the tension between its material abundance and spiritual responsibility. The conversation asks what it means to live in a place where divine presence and accountability are inescapable. This week's episode is generously sponsored by Emily Simon, in honor of all the teachers and students she has learned from at Pardes—especially through the weekly Parsha podcast.

What did Moshe get wrong—and why was the consequence so severe? In this episode, Zvi Hirschfield and Tovah Leah Nachmani explore Parshat Chukat against the backdrop of Israel's war with Iran. They reflect on the mysterious sin of Moshe at Mei Merivah and what it means to sanctify God in moments of pressure and uncertainty. Through ancient stories and modern realities, they examine the balance between faith and human action, asking how we recognize divine presence in a world shaped by trauma, responsibility, and courage. In this moving conversation, we explore the book of Numbers through the lens of a short journey to a promised land that suddenly went awry, in search of emotional guidance in the face of a war that has continued for longer than the Israeli public anticipated. What does the book of Bamidbar have to tell us about daily life in the face of fear? Why does living in proximity to God feel so scary sometimes? What was the greatest strength of the wilderness generation? This episode is dedicated in memory of Maj. (res.) Eliav Abitbol, a childhood neighbor of our guest who fell in Lebanon on Oct. 26th, 2024 and is survived by his wife, Tal, and their four children. Rachel Sharansky Danziger is a Jerusalem-based writer and educator, who lectures internationally about the intersections between Jewish texts, life in Israel, and the art of storytelling. In addition to teaching torah at Matan, Pardes and other, online, venues, Rachel is the co-editor of the recently published anthologies of prayers "Az Nashir: We Will Sing Again - Women's Prayers for Our Time of Need" and "Az Nashir: Between Silence & Song -- Women's Prayers for Our Days of Remembrance & Celebration" and is currently working on a book about family stories in the Book of Judges as a Sefaria fellow. This is a special podcast miniseries produced by Matan and hosted by Dr. Yosefa Fogel Wruble which will drop each week of the Omer counting between the holidays of Pesach and Shavuot. In each episode, a Bible scholar explores an iconic biblical text in light of the changing Israeli, Jewish, and world realities.
How did Noam Lemish's experience living in Bhutan influence his outlook? A lot of Noam's creative life is inspired by bridging cultures and being open to possibility, and you'll be hearing some music from some of his many projects as well as hear his reflections on teaching and learning. It was fascinating to learn about his mentors including George Marsh and W.A. At the heart of our faith lies an orchard, a place of deep contemplation and spiritual nourishment. This orchard, known in Hebrew as PaRDeS—a Persian loanword meaning "walled garden" or "park"—serves as a gateway to exploring the boundless wisdom of the Bible. But how do we navigate this orchard to uncover its rich fruits? On this journey through God's orchard, we'll see the Bible's beauty and wisdom and learn key principles to understand its profound teachings. Our exploration features a remarkable example from the Gospel of John, where a Remez weaves Abraham's narrative with John's revelations about God and His one and only Son. This simple "hint" brings forward the rich meaning of the story of Abraham and Isaac into that of God the Father and Jesus. Join us on this enlightening adventure to pick and relish the nutritious fruits of the Bible. ---------------------------------------------- Support Fig Tree Ministries: https://donorbox.org/support-figtree-ministries Fig Tree Amazon Portal: https://amzn.to/3USMelI www.figtreeteaching.com Class Handout: https://www.figtreeteaching.com/blog/exploring-the-orchard-prds-of-scripture YouTube: https://youtu.be/SUdGl2a85Cg Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/7mh4v8e7FDwOoPhQd7bz7Y References: (Affiliate Links) Learn About Christian Mysticism: A GREAT Resource! The poems in the book I Am Your Father (Pardes Press, 2019) were written during a period of great confusion and pain, culminating in the moment when the poet discovered that the person he had until then referred to as his daughter was actually his son, in other words, that he had a transgender son. This revelation was not a single moment but evolved through an ongoing process of listening, understanding, loving, and increasingly close father-son bonding. The poems in the book capture this discovery with sharp precision and heartfelt wisdom, and importantly, in real-time. The book began to be written about six months before the poet's son came out as transgender and continued to be written for about four more months thereafter. These are not poems written from a distance in time, but right in the eye of the storm, and through them, we learn to appreciate the depth and beauty of the father-son relationship, as only poetry can reflect. I Am Your Father is Adi Wolfson's sixth book of poetry. I Am Your Father includes the English language poems as translated by the American poet Michael R. Burch. Adi Wolfson is a poet, environmental activist, expert on sustainability and a professor of chemical engineering. His poems have been published in a number of Hebrew literary journals and anthologies, and have been translated into several languages. He has published six poetry books in Hebrew, a nonfiction book on sustainability in both Hebrew and English, and have won several awards, including the Levi Eshkol Prime Minister's Prize for Creative Work in 2017, one of Israel's most prestigious literature prizes.
