We watched the 1986 film from Jim Wynorski, Chopping Mall.Let's run down our schlocky ‘80s movie checklist. Does this film have:A ridiculous story that won't hold up under any scrutiny? Check.Casual racism that's hardly ever addressed? Check. An almost obscene amount of gory violence? Check.Gratuitous boob shots? And now, my daughter, don't be afraid. I will do for you all you ask. All the people of my town know that you are a woman of noble character. Although it is true that I am a guardian-redeemer of our family, there is another who is more closely related than I. Stay here for the night, and in the morning if he wants to do his duty as your guardian-redeemer, good; let him redeem you. But if he is not willing, as surely as the Lord lives I will do it. Lie here until morning.” So she lay at his feet until morning, but got up before anyone could be recognized; and he said, “No one must know that a woman came to the threshing floor.” He also said, “Bring me the shawl you are wearing and hold it out.” When she did so, he poured into it six measures of barley and placed the bundle on her. Then he went back to town. (Ruth 3:11-15) This passage has been and continues to be full of sexual overtones, and yet the words of and about Boaz and Ruth continue to declare that they are of “noble character.” Nothing untoward has happened here on the threshing floor. Not that it couldn't have. Every opportunity is given: “stay here,” “lie here until morning.” Boaz & Ruth are fully aware of the optics and opportunities: “no one must know that a woman came to the threshing floor.” It's also worth noting that a guardian-redeemer had no duty to marry a widow. The Old Testament provisions are mostly about securing property. As we discover when the guardian-redeemer in line ahead of Boaz decides to do nothing, Boaz likewise is under no obligation to say yes to Ruth's proposition of marriage. This context highlights just how bold and risky was the plan of Naomi to secure a husband for Ruth. It relies on the fact that Boaz was a man of noble character who would not take advantage of Ruth despite every opportunity afforded to do so. But it also supposes Boaz to be more than this. Will he show God's own sort of mercy and kindness—the kind that goes beyond the expectation of “do no harm” and works a generous, costly redemption beyond hope? The answer is not long in coming. Yes. He will do it, and quickly. It's not his to do—but he will pursue it this very morning. He seals his intent with a gift—another abundant outpouring of grain. No one must know that a woman came to the threshing floor—but where precisely would've Ruth gotten all that grain otherwise in the wee hours of the morning? Boaz's generosity risks much, just like Ruth and Naomi's boldness has—but it's good. It's all good. Gifts, blessings, and a sign of nobility that shatters any fear of reproach. This is what God's redemption is all about. Did God have a duty to redeem us? No, but he did it anyway. Does God have to pour generous provisions into our lap? No, but he does it anyway. God risks much, but with a nobility and purpose in mercy and hesed-kindness that no darkness can overcome. Boaz is a picture of this sort of work of God. It is a risky work of mercy and kindness all of us are called on to follow. As you journey on, go with the blessing of God: May the peace of the Lord Christ go with you : wherever he may send you. May he guide you through the wilderness : protect you through the storm. May he bring you home rejoicing : at the wonders he has shown you. May he bring you home rejoicing : once again into our doors.

This is the Catchup on 3 Things by The Indian Express and I'm Flora Swain.Today is the 7th of august and here are the headlines. In a heartbreaking twist of fate for Vinesh Phogat, the wrestler will be disqualified from the Paris Olympics after she could not make the weight on the morning of her 50 kg gold medal bout. The IOA said in a statement, "It is with regret that the Indian contingent shares news of the disqualification of Vinesh Phogat from the Women's Wrestling 50kg class. Despite the best efforts by the team through the night, she weighed in a few grams over 50kg this morning. No further comments will be made by the contingent at this time. The Indian team requests you respect Vinesh's privacy. I would like to focus on the competitions on hand.”Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya today said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has directed Indian Olympic Association President PT Usha to take necessary action regarding wrestler Vinesh Phogat's disqualification from Paris Olympics 2024. Addressing the Lok Sabha, Mandaviya said, “IOA president PT Usha directed by PM Modi to take appropriate action. IOA has registered dissent with United World Wrestling regarding this matter.”NDIA bloc MPs today walked out of both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha on Vinesh Phogat issue. This comes after Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya addressed the Lok Sabha regarding the wrestler's disqualification. Mandaviya said that the IOA has registered dissent with United World Wrestling regarding this matter, while adding that the IOA PT Usha has also been directed by the prime minister to take necessary action. In other news, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi urged the Centre to declare the Wayanad landslide, claiming 276 lives, a national disaster. “I appreciate the support from various quarters to alleviate the tragedy in Wayanad,” he said.Stating that it is “pained by the observations” in the July 17, 2024, order of Justice Rajbir Sehrawat of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, the Supreme Court today expunged those observations. “We are of the view that the observations which were made in the order…were totally unnecessary for the ultimate order which was passed. Gratuitous observations in regard to previous orders passed by the Supreme Court…are absolutely unwarranted. Compliance with orders passed by the Supreme Court is not a matter of choice, but a matter of bounden constitutional obligation bearing in mind the structure of the Indian legal system and the authority of the Supreme Court, which heads the process of judicial adjudication in the country,” a five-judge Constitution Bench which took suo motu cognisance of the matter said.Four Chinese tourists were among five people killed in Nepal today when a helicopter crashed in the mountains northwest region of Kathmandu. Police have recovered five dead bodies from the crash site in Ward No 7 of Shivapuri Rural Municipality, Nuwakot, Myrepublica newspaper reported. Nepal-based Air Dynasty helicopter, 9N-AJD, was en route to Rasuwa from Kathmandu when it crashed. The helicopter departed from Kathmandu at 1:54 PM and was en route to Syaphrubensi when it crashed. This crash comes just weeks after the Saurya Airlines plane crash at the Tribhuvan International Airport on July 24.This was the Catchup on 3 Things by The Indian Express.

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for February 5, 2024 is: gratuitous gruh-TOO-uh-tuss adjective Gratuitous describes things that are not necessary, appropriate, or justified, as in "a gratuitous insult" or "a gratuitous assumption." Gratuitous can also mean "free." // The film was criticized for its gratuitous violence. // A local veterinary technician provides gratuitous services to the animal shelter twice a month. See the entry > Examples: "The Hunger Games trilogy followed Katniss Everdeen as she won a fight to the death and eventually sparked a nationwide rebellion, a dystopian treatment that explores how gratuitous violence can lead to generational trauma. While the book's topics are serious, Levithan tells Rolling Stone that much of The Hunger Games' success came from Collins' ability to respect her younger readers' ability to handle deep material, making the books reach an audience of all ages." — CT Jones, Rolling Stone, 25 Nov. 2023 Did you know? Like gratitude, grace, and congratulate, gratuitous is a descendant of the Latin word gratus, which means "pleasing" or "grateful." When gratuitous was first used in the 17th century, it meant "free" or "given without return benefit or compensation." The extended meaning "done without good reason" or "unwarranted" came about just a few decades later, perhaps from the belief held by some people that one should not give something without getting something in return. Today, that extended meaning is the more common sense, employed, for example, when graphic cruelty depicted in a work of fiction is described as "gratuitous violence," or when unkind words better left unsaid are described as "a gratuitous insult."

These gifts are different from sanctifying graces in that they are given to us for us to give away. Sherry explains how every baptized person receives at least one charism, how all the charisms are evangelizing and healing, and how charisms spring to fruitfulness from a lived relationship with God. This week, Audie visits a restaurant that got rid of tipping, and looks into the movement to get rid of the practice all together. Our guests are Amanda Cohen, chef and owner of Dirt Candy, a no-tipping restaurant in Manhattan, and David Stockwell, co-owner of Faun in Brooklyn. We talk about the value – versus the cost – of good service, what the pandemic revealed about how customers really feel about tipping, and what happens when your ideals clash with your economic reality. Welcome to #Millennial, the home of pretend adulting and real talk! The GOP was of course messy while we were off air, and unlike Marie Condo, we do not love mess. Happy(?) Pride. On top of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation sweeping the nation, brands are really fucking up just in time for pride month. Tbh, Bud Light deserves their current sales losses on the basis of their beer sucking ass, but they've managed to piss off a large cross-section of the country with their reaction to backlash over their ad featuring a trans woman. Are people actually outraged by things like this, or are they looking for new ways to be relevant? Asking for Kid Rock's music career. Target is also fucking up - out of concern for their employees, they've pulled and diminished elements of their Pride displays in stores. Never thought we'd see the day where Bud Light and Target were in the dog house for caving to queerphobia, but here we are! RIP disposable income: as part of debt ceiling negotiations, federal student loan repayments will officially be restarting this fall. We poll the #Millennial Facebook group to see how listeners are feeling about resuming student loan payments and hear what others are doing to prepare. Everyone agrees: interest is the real killer here. If interest were taken out of the equation, we'd all have a much easier time repaying our principal balances. Critics and audiences seem to be split over HBO's newest buzz series, 'The Idol.' At what point does violence and nudity become gratuitous and unwatchable for us? Is there ever a place for it? Movie ratings are a joke, and the MPAA's ratings system is not applied consistently. This week, we're recommending 'Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse' (Laura), 'Variety Actors on Actors: Katherine Heigl, Ellen Pompeo (Pam), and Spindrift Spiked (Andrew). And in this week's installment of After Dark: Family vloggers - are they going too far? Nikki Phillippi and her husband canceled plans to adopt from Thailand after learning they would be legally barred from showing or talking about their child for one year. Is there a lesson to be learned from the early 2000's slew of family reality TV shows? Children who grew up in these situations are now speaking out and alleging emotional, financial, and sometimes physical abuse. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
1980's Caddyshack was Harold Ramis' directorial debut! Go Harold! Featuring a slew of funny dudes, lots of improvisational comedy, and a Baby Ruth mistaken for a turd, Caddyshack is considered to be one of the funniest movies to come out of the 80s. We really had never seen it - but man do a lot of guys (and some girls!) talk about it a lot. Is it the plethora of one liners? Golf? Gratuitous boobies? We'll never know. But this movie has its moments and we chuckled along throughout most of the crazy shenganigans that goes on. We talk all about the comedically gifted but rumored asshole to work with qualities of Chevy Chase and Bill Murray, the danger of 10 speed bicycles, and how the Baby Ruth candy bar certainly had a moment in the 1980s but now who eats 'em???

We get into all kinds of typing-related subjects like QWERTY dominance, the shift wars of the late 1800s, and 150-year-old designs that have trickled down to software keyboards, plus a fascinating discussion about what it's like to spend seven years traveling the world to write a book of this scope and depth.Find out more about (and snag a copy of) Marcin's book: https://shifthappens.site/Support the Pod!
