The Island Synagogue), and for the first time ever, I recorded it! I chose this kinnah because it presents itself as being related to tefilah, which has been the focus of my learning all summer. But even a surface-level examination of the text indicates that something strange is going on here. And, as you'll hear, this kinnah is quite appropriate to the Tishah b'Av we are observing in the middle of the war that began with the massacre on October 7th. -----מקורות:רמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר זמנים, הלכות תעניות ה:אקינה כ': הטה אלקי אזנך ושמעדניאל ט:טו-יטאבות ב:ה-----The Torah Content for the first two weeks of August has been sponsored by Avital, "in gratitude for all the incredible brachah in my life right now and Mishlei and Stoicism for helping me handle it. The specific questions we examined were: (1) What should or shouldn't we feel about the deaths of evildoers in general? (2) What should or shouldn't we feel in this case, given the uncertainty of the ramifications? It ended up being an enjoyable and insightful analysis which (I hope) yielded some practical clarity on these current events.   -----מקורות:Rabbi Scott Khan - Death of a ModerateAurelius - Meditations 2:3 (trans. Length: 58 minutesSynopsis: This evening (12/13/23), in our Wednesday night Tehilim shiur, we reviewed what we did last time, took a couple of hesitant steps to explain the perek on our own, and then decided to let me Malbim "spoon-feed" us. We read through his commentary, then stepped back to analyze it, and BAM - we came up with a theory for the main idea and the purpose of the perek based on the Malbim's approach! We even came full circle and shed a new light on the minhag to recite Al Naharos Bavel before birkas ha'mazon. For better or for worse, this means that I know the idea REALLY well, and had a hard time seeing this pasuk with fresh eyes. After a few attempts at interpretation from the guys in the shiur, I shared my understanding. Length: 1 hourSynopsis: This morning (9/22/23), in our Machshavah Lab series for women, we reviewed the halachos of interpersonal teshuvah in the Rambam and raised a bunch of questions - several of which were new to me this year. These new questions gave rise to a new theory of interpersonal teshuvah which, I believe, answers all of the questions and yields a richer understanding of why we ask our fellow Jews for their forgiveness.
