"You're on the phone with your girlfriend, she's upset..." Welcome to Season 3 of AP Taylor Swift! What happens when we can't trust the person telling the story? In this week's Show & Tell episode, we explore the concept of unreliable narrators through three Taylor Swift songs that demonstrate how perspective shapes truth. From teenage crush confessions to post-breakup rants to defiant love declarations, we examine how Taylor uses narrative techniques that make us question what's really happening beneath the surface of these seemingly straightforward stories. There are perhaps more than two ways to experience Charlottesville Community Engagement, but the audio edition is one of the ones that I know about. I'm Sean Tubbs, a journalist who got his professional start as an intern at a public radio station in Roanoke thirty years ago. Before that I spent a couple of years at a student newspaper at Virginia Tech. Somehow all of that led to this time in 2025 when I'm able to produce radio and print stories for an audience that pays me to do the work. Thank you and here's what's coming up in this edition.* Case against Charlottesville's zoning to proceed to trial after Judge Worrell changes position on default (learn more)* A round up of other stories not quite yet ready for a full story (see below for the briefs)* Albemarle Supervisors are briefed on strategic plan report (learn more)* On September 5, groups will mark the 75th anniversary of federal ruling that allowed a Black man to attend UVA law (learn more)* Albemarle Supervisors approve special use permit for private school on Dudley Mountain Road (learn more)Sponsor: Westwind FlowersIt's that time of year we've all been waiting for… Dahlia season!Westwind Flowers in Orange, Virginia believes the blooms in your vase should be just as fresh, and just as local, as the food on your table.Join them in September at their Gordonsville floral studio for their Dahlias & Desserts Workshop—sweet treats, stunning flowers, and serious fun. Then in October, grab your shears and sign up for their Dahlia U-Pick events at their farm… a flower lover's dream come true! But why wait? Perhaps it would be useful to have a segment of quick stories. This functions as the script for those who likely won't take a listen and longer versions may be in the next regular edition.City Council to consider ban overnight camping ban in Charlottesville public's spacesThe Labor Day holiday means City Council will meet on Tuesday rather than Monday, and the final item on their regular agenda is an ordinance to ban camping and personal storage on city property.“The City Manager shall be guided by City of Charlottesville's interpretation of applicable federal and state law, the safety and dignity of those impacted, and the need to protect public and private property in the City of Charlottesville,” reads the final line of the draft rules.Charlottesville City Police Chief Michael Kochis has proposed the new rules which are being considered less than two months after the White House has issued an executive order that calls for imprisonment of people who cannot find a home. For more information on this story, check out my story on C-Ville Weekly's website but also be sure to read the source materials.Resources:* Staff report for the ordinance* Draft protocol for how the ordinance is to be implemented* The ordinance to prohibit “unpermitted camping on city property”* White House Executive Order titled Ending Crime and Disorder on America's StreetsWhite House withdraws $39 million from Norfolk project for off-shore wind logisticsSince taking office, President Donald Trump has used the power of the federal government to shift away from the use of alternatives to fossil fuel. For instance, on July 7, 2025, the administration issued an executive order titled “Ending Market Distorting Subsidies for Unreliable, Foreign-Controlled Energy Sources.”On Friday, August 29, U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy followed through with the termination or withdrawal of $679 million in projects for offshore wind projects. Duffy called such projects a scam.In late October 2023, the Port of Virginia provided an update on its efforts to become the primary logistics center for the Mid-Atlantic to assist Dominion Energy's Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project. This is taking place at the Portsmouth Marine Terminal.Duffy's announcement includes $39.265 million for the Norfolk Offshore Wind Logistics Port. This was to support the Dominion project which is to consist of the construction of 176 offshore wind turbines situated on a lease site 27 miles off the coast of Virginia Beach. (view the project on Dominion's site)What does this mean to the overall project? Stay tuned.Virginia Senate committee denies confirmation of more UVA Board membersWhen the University of Virginia's Board of Visitors next meets on September 11, there may not be as many members around the table at the Rotunda. On August 28, the Senate Privileges and Elections Committee declined to confirm 14 appointees to governing bodies of Virginia's public universities including four to the UVA Board of Visitors. All eight Democrats voted to decline to advance the nominations while all six Republicans voted to do so.The action comes at a time when the Virginia Supreme Court is taking up a lawsuit over a similar denial on June 9 when the committee declined to confirm the appointment of former Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli. Current Attorney General Jason Miyares had advised fellow Republicans and University Rectors that the Senate committee action was not valid. The Senate Democrats on the panel sued and Fairfax County Circuit Court Jonathan D. Frieden agreed to a preliminary injunction barring Cuccinelli from serving as a member of the BOV. He did not attend a meeting in early August and his name is not listed on the BOV website. In late June, Youngkin appointed four more to the Board of Visitors and the newcomers did attend that August meeting. However, their names have also been removed from the BOV website. The Privileges and Elections Committee meeting on August 28 was swift but Republicans on the panel argued that a confirmation vote should wait until after the Virginia Supreme Court weighs in.“Traditionally, if we have something in front of the courts, we allow the court to rule and give them the opportunity to do their job,” said Senator Bill DeSteph (R-8). “And I think that before we vote on this, we should allow the Supreme Court the opportunity to rule on this.”DeSteph said a vote to deny the nominees could be construed as an attempt to influence the Virginia Supreme Court's decision.Senator Adam Ebbins (D-39) noted that none of the people up for appointment were part of the pending lawsuit.Senator Tara Durant (R-27) said she felt the nomination process was becoming politicized.“This is really kind of unprecedented,” Durant said. “We have a long list of people who have got quite a wealth of experience. And I think the broader question it begs is what will happen in the future to dissuade those who are willing to serve the Commonwealth in this capacity?”Committee Chair Aaron Rouse (D-22) responded briefly without much explanation.“We have a job to do as this committee, not only to protect our colleges, universities, but make sure that appointees or potential appointees are upholding the values and principles set forth by members of the Commonwealth, members of this body,” Rouse said.Stay tuned for more on this and other stories. And make sure to check out the Cavalier Daily's coverage as well. The end of 915-AI don't usually post end-notes for the podcast version but this is a hybrid. I want you to consider possibilities you may not have done so before. I believe in this so strongly that I've dedicated my life in the pursuit of this craft. Sure, I make typos. Sure, I make the occasional error. Sure, I maybe don't know when to shut up in these blurbs sometimes. As soon as I hit send and as soon as Leeds v. Newcastle is over, I'm going to lace up my boots and walk somewhere. I don't know where yet but everywhere I walk I will see the examples of previous decisions I've covered in my 20 years here. Whenever I get to where I'm going, I'll keep working. It might be correspondence. It might be thanking subscribers. I may get the second version out of the Town Crier Productions media kit. I may begin writing the Week Ahead. I may write a note to the people doing the Virginia Local News Ecosystem Study to ask why the Cavalier Daily isn't included in their geographic scope. Or maybe I'll just keep trying to make up new sounds for future podcasts. Or maybe I'll just chat with friends?Who knows? All I know is I pledge to always be ready to get to work when I am able. And so Volodymyr Zelensky returned to the White House, but this time with a phalanx of European leaders to support him – and, perhaps, to make sure the orange toddler didn't get upset. For his part, Trump played nice, despite talking with Putin mid-way through proceedings – oh to have a transcript of THAT call... In this Midnight Mass special, recorded while European leaders were still at the White House, Alex Andreou and Kenny Campbell look at what was said, by whom, and what it might all mean. Are there grounds for optimism? What, if anything, has changed? And who gets the Nobel Peace Prize..? ***SPONSOR US AT KO-FI.COM/QUIETRIOTPOD*** “It was like the world's most elite babysitting team had assembled. As if Thanos had a stroke and the Avengers have to gather around him, as carers, to make sure he doesn't click his fingers. And they may have to do it again tomorrow, and every week for three years, but it's still worth doing.” “I detected a real insecurity in Trump. He kept going on about how unfair the media is being on him. It tells me that he read the coverage of the Alaska meeting and it did sting him… It's a mistake to see Trump as somehow untouchable. He cares about popularity and craves approval. That is his pressure point.” “Trump has shifted on the notion of America being somehow involved in the security guarantees given to Ukraine. This week, I had the absolute pleasure of speaking with Dakini Leah, founder of Living in Tantra and a true ray of sunshine from Grand Junction, Colorado (even if she admits she misses tea with clotted cream). We dove headfirst into the world of Tantra—what it is, what it isn't, and why it's definitely not just about long orgasms or bizarre religious rituals, thanks in no small part, to its association with Sting. Here's a sneak peek at what we covered:* Erectile Dysfunction: Or as I prefer to call them, “unreliable erections.” We explored how Tantra can help men embrace this stage of life without shame, and even turn it into an opportunity for deeper intimacy.* Soft Lingam Techniques: We got into the nitty-gritty of why even a non-erect penis is still an incredible source of pleasure - Leah calls it ‘the wand of light'.* Libido Changes in Women: We talked about how midlife doesn't mean the end of sensuality—in fact, it's just the beginning of a richer, more radiant connection with yourself and your partner.* Grieving the Old You: Both Leah and I opened up about the process of letting go of who we used to be and embracing the new, more self-assured versions of ourselves. We agreed it's not always easy, but it's so worth it.This episode is packed with practical tips, heartfelt moments, and lots of laughs (because let's face it, sex after 50 is full of surprises). Plus, Leah shares free tantric exercises you can try tonight - be sure and check out her website.Grab a cup of tea (or a glass of wine), settle in, and enjoy our chat!00:00 Introduction to Tantra and Personal Journeys02:48 The Essence of Tantra: Beyond Sexuality05:39 Tantra for Midlife: Embracing Change and Sensuality08:26 Unreliable Erections: A Tantric Perspective11:23 Navigating Libido Changes in Women14:24 The Importance of Self-Discovery in Relationships17:01 Exploring Joy and Connection in Relationships19:29 The Role of Tantra in Aging Gracefully22:19 Grieving and Embracing New Selves25:19 Conclusion: The Journey of Tantra and Self-Acceptance Get full access to Sex Advice for Seniors at www.sexadviceforseniors.com/subscribe

Provide your feedback here. Anonymously send me a text message. In this episode, Mike discusses the Manitoba Court of Appeal decision R. v. Miller, 2025 MBCA 48 where police — acting on an informer's tip — arrested a man after stopping a taxi he was riding in. When the man was searched, police found cash, meth and two cellphones. Did the police sufficiently CORROBORATE the information? Was it enough for the what, when and where of the tip to be confirmed but not the criminal aspect related to it? Or should the police have done more investigation before making the arrest? Thanks for listening! Feedback welcome at legalissuesinpolicing@gmail.com

Work has officially begun to create a new National Biosecurity Centre. It's being built on the existing Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) site, at Weybridge in Surrey. The whole project is costing between two and three billion pounds and is expected to take until 2033 to complete. The APHA was recently criticised by the National Audit Office, which said facilities there were not adequate to prevent or cope with contiguous national animal disease outbreaks such as foot and mouth and avian flu. However, the government says it is putting that right by the upgrade, which will ensure that the threat of animal diseases, which could be passed to humans, are prevented or dealt with efficiently. Unreliable mobile phone signal is a common complaint on many farms. Connectivity isn't just about messaging or making calls. Using apps and uploading data are an increasingly important part of everyday farming. Could part of the solution be private, portable digital 5G networks? We visit a farm thathas been trialling such a system. All week we're meeting the next generation of agricultural talent; whether it be farmers, foresters, land managers or agronomists. Thousands of young people will graduate from agricultural courses, across the UK this summer and all week, we'll be finding out what they hope to achieve, and what jobs they are looking forward to. We meet students from Moulton College in Northamptonshire who have just completed their agricultural studies.Presenter: Anna Hill Producer: Rebecca Rooney

Karen Read Trial Day 27 - Snow Plow Driver Proves To Unreliable Witness The Karen Read murder trial took a dramatic turn when snowplow driver Brian "Lucky" Loughran delivered testimony that could completely destroy the prosecution's case against Karen Read in the death of Boston Police Officer John O'Keefe. In this deep dive analysis, we break down the five most damaging revelations from Loughran's testimony that expose serious problems with the timeline prosecutors have been pushing for over three years. Loughran, who operated the Canton Department of Public Works snowplow "Frankentruck" during the January 29, 2022 blizzard, testified under oath that he saw absolutely nothing on the Albert family lawn at 2:45 AM where John O'Keefe's body was later discovered. This directly contradicts the prosecution's theory that O'Keefe was struck by Karen Read's SUV around 12:45 AM and lay dying in the snow for hours. The implications are staggering. If Loughran's testimony is accurate, it means either the prosecution's timeline is completely wrong, or something far more sinister happened to John O'Keefe between 2:45 AM and 6:00 AM when his body was found. The defense team is arguing this proves their conspiracy theory that O'Keefe was actually murdered inside the Albert home and his body was moved outside to frame Karen Read. Special Prosecutor Hank Brennan launched an aggressive cross-examination, highlighting inconsistencies in Loughran's previous statements and his extensive exposure to media coverage of the case. But the core of his testimony remains: he saw nothing where a body should have been visible with his truck's powerful lights illuminating the area. We analyze every moment of this crucial testimony, examine the prosecution's desperate attempts to discredit this witness, and explore what this means for Karen Read's fight for freedom. GREEN ENERGY IS EXPENSIVE AND UNRELIABLE ENERGY And Amy Oliver Cooke writes about it here for Complete Colorado. This is my favorite part:Environmentalists appealed to consumers by saying wind and solar would save ratepayers money. From the outset, Governor Polis refused to provide a detailed cost analysis of his plan while rejecting Independence Institute's 2017 projection that the transition could cost $45 billion. Polis insisted the Institute's estimates were inflated and modeled a plan that wasn't even his. Yet, Polis never offered an alternative figure, saying, instead, he knows it will be less.Fast forward to 2024. The Colorado Energy Office's (CEO) Ascend Analytics report offered an acknowledgment and a sobering warning: Polis's wind, solar, and battery-only system would require 69,000 megawatts of new capacity by 2040 and still “barely meet reliability targets.” At $61 billion, it's also the most expensive scenario studied. That figure doesn't even include the billions of dollars needed for transmission costs. The total system cost will be far greater.Once again, the Institute did the math. The total system cost for Polis' plan, including storage, necessary overbuild, backup, property taxes, and utility profits, new wind and solar costs $280–$319 per megawatt-hour, compared to $32 for existing coal and $40 for gas. Wind and solar costs aren't just expensive—they're economically destabilizing.Amy is on the show to discuss at 1pm, but you really should watch her great show with Jake Fogelman called Power Gab here.
What the heck is going on in here? I mean, we keep ending up back in this basement despite all the shit going on and there is A LOT of SHIT going on. Let's just say that this episode goes to places I never even knew possible, even considering the basement. When we're not in the basement, who know's where this is going. At least in the basement, we know where's it's going, right? WRONG. It's going places. Other places. Not basement related places. At its best, this story provides surprises. At its worst, this story provides surprises. It's a mixed bag, but no one knows where this is going, I assure you. Unreliable as ever, let's get into it. Back into the basement we go. Crime statistics are meant to help police departments identify trends, allocate resources and shape effective public safety strategies. But what if the national crime data we rely on — like FBI Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) and NIBRS — is incomplete, outdated or misleading? In this episode of the Policing Matters podcast, host Jim Dudley speaks with Jeff Asher — CIA-trained crime analyst, former New Orleans Police Department data expert and founder of AH Datalytics — about the challenges with traditional crime data collection and the rise of real-time crime monitoring tools. They discuss why the transition to NIBRS has been slow and inconsistent, and how delays in national reporting limit law enforcement's ability to respond to crime trends. Asher, who also publishes the Jeffalytics Substack newsletter, has emerged as a national voice on U.S. crime trends. Drawing from his experience in both federal intelligence and local law enforcement, he explains why agencies need faster, more transparent access to crime data — and how tools like the Realtime Crime Index are filling the gap. Subscribe to Asher's Jeffalytics newsletter on Substack for weekly insights into crime statistics, data reliability, and what the numbers really mean. Are you looking for a steady, dependable friend who always remembers birthdays, follows through on commitments, and shows up when it counts? Then you need an SJ friend! In this episode, we explore the Guardian temperament (SJ types: ESFJ, ISFJ, ESTJ, ISTJ)—the friends who hold everything together with their structure, loyalty, and strong sense of responsibility. But just like every type, SJs have friendship strengths and struggles. While they're incredibly reliable and thoughtful, they can also be overly rigid, controlling, or struggle with emotional connection and encouragement. Join me as we break down the SJ friend using the TRUE friendship framework: ✅ True – Their unmatched loyalty and dependability—but also their struggles with control and holding grudges. ✅ Respect – How SJs show up for others but sometimes struggle with boundaries or taking on too much responsibility. ✅ Understanding – The difference between emotionally attuned SFJs and logical, solution-focused STJs (and how that impacts listening and empathy). ✅ Encouragement – Why SJs show support through actions rather than words—and why SFJs may need reassurance but struggle to ask for it. Whether you're an SJ, have an SJ friend, or just want to deepen your understanding of different friendship dynamics, this episode is packed with insights, humor, and practical takeaways. Tune in now! She has over 10,000 hours of experience in education, both in the classroom and corporate sector. Even though she holds a Master's degree in education, she struggled to understand her neurodivergent and oppositional kids. Inspired by her experience using Myers Briggs and the Enneagram with business teams, she spent over a decade researching temperament pattens to help family teams. She is a best-selling author and host of the Not So Normal Parenting podcast. Her podcast is entitled Not So Normal Parenting because not only are she and her kids neurodivergent but some of her life experiences, such as driving off a cliff her wedding night and going viral for embarrassing her seventeen-year old son by dancing on a snowy and jammed interstate, fall into that category. In addition to being talked about by Hoda Kotb, the BackStreet Boys, and Princess Kate, even U2 singer Bono mentioned the incident in his autobiography. Because Wendy herself has struggled as a helicopter parent, a cranky parent and an embarrassing parent, she wants to help other parents struggle……..a little bit less!
What happens when the world your characters -- or your readers -- first find themselves in turns out to be not quite what it appears? Marina Lostetter joins us to explore the different ways that a writer can play with an unreliable world. Maybe it means a story of scientific discovery that reshapes how their characters perceive their place in the universe; maybe it means a story where information has been deliberately suppressed and has to be fought for; maybe it's a world where knowledge has simply been lost and must be recovered. It could even mean a world that is, itself, changing as the story goes on! What are the challenges for on-boarding readers to an unreliable world? How is it different in a story that starts in what seems to be our modern real world and then reveals the Matrix or a portal universe versus a story that begins in a fantasy world, so that the author has to get the reader up to speed on that before they can start introducing the world's secrets? What role does self-mythologizing play at both the personal and the societal level? How about the pressure of a character maintaining a lie, either for themself, someone else, or their whole nation? Building these things may mean thinking about your world in layers of who knows what -- and how easy or difficult it is to peel back those layers. We also wrangle with the difficulty in combining an unreliable world with an unreliable narrator. Characters lying to teach other is one thing -- but a narrative lying to the reader or viewer is a riskier choice! It can be beautiful when done well -- but it can also be a breach of trust that impairs the overall story.
